Voggy vs Becketty

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 8, 2014

I have nothing new to say about Tim Lincecum, therefore……..
Pretty big series coming up in LA, yes?

If I continue to think that Beckett is done then I have to believe that the Giants have a decent shot to win this game tonight. And then I turn to see who’s on the hill for us, and I’m longer as confident.

So, I have no idea what’s going to happen tonight.

Voggy’s had two pretty good starts in a row, but Beckett’s got far better stats over a similar amount of innings, so on paper, it’s advantage LA, regardless that they had a troubled and rain delayed roadie…

Just my take, but we are favorites to take this game this evening, despite it being played on the Bums home turf. Voggy has limited his last two opponents to one run over 13 innings. Also, although Vogelsong didn’t receive a decision in two outings against the Dodgers last month – where he yielded five runs in 10 innings – the starts were both GMen victories. He’s also 4-3 with a 3.97 ERA in 21 games (12 of them starts) versus Los Angeles.

He needs to watch out for Gordon who is 9 for 23 off him and Hanley Ramirez, who has hit .421 with two solo homers in five games against us (last month). On our side, Hunter Pence is 8 for 19 when facing Beckett. Last, but not least, we have won nine of the last 12 meetings against these “Art Dealers” and Beckett hasn’t won a game in 19 months.

Put me down for the Giants winning at least a split in LALA Land and possibly, 3 of 4. :-)

OK, blade. I’m convinced. Voggy the Conqueror tonight. I just want to make sure he’s got the enchiladas…

  3. twinfan1 said, on May 8, 2014 at 11:19 am

If Vogey has anything at all stuff-wise, he can out-gut anybody. I’m going with him tonight and a resurgent Belt to take Game One.

    • snarkk said, on May 8, 2014 at 11:25 am

Yeah, he’s definitely a battler as long as he’s got some stuff. And yes, Belt has warmed up a bit, he must have decided after a Bochy benching to stop being a putz and go back to that Bam Bam inspired grip…

  4. Chipower9 said, on May 8, 2014 at 11:37 am

Yeah, I gave a quick synopsis on the match-ups last thread. Beckett done? As I mentioned on the last thread, he has a 3.14 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP. I would LOVE those numbers for our 4/5 guys. Also, Beckett has thrown 28.2 innings in 5 starts (certainly more than either Tim or Vogey). So, I am not real confident with tonight’s game. Given Steve’s VogelStrong stats…I am a bit more optimistic…but am not running down to throw some coin on this one.

  5. Chipower9 said, on May 8, 2014 at 11:39 am

Also, very good post by WillieD (last one) on the last thread. I absolutely agree.

  6. Chipower9 said, on May 8, 2014 at 12:22 pm

Beckett has more starts where he has gone at least 5. If the Giants got 5 from Vogey and Tim each start and they ran in that 3-4 run range, I would be very happy with that.

I am having an enchilada for lunch…hope Nicole hooked Vogey up with his…

  7. snarkk said, on May 8, 2014 at 12:25 pm

Giants need to win their minimum 2 before Kershaw shows up Sunday. Past history indicates that’s probably not a good shot at a win…

  8. snarkk said, on May 8, 2014 at 12:25 pm

Voggy has 6 starts, 29.1 innings so far…

  9. zumiee said, on May 8, 2014 at 12:53 pm

There’s probably no SABR numbers to back it up, but I think that ‘4 starting outfielders’ thing is hurting the Dodgers. It’s got to be a weird dynamic in the clubhouse with that going on. And especially since one of them is the goofball Puig. It’s ironic in light of the talk here about benches: the Dodgers, in a sense, have TOO much bench, if that’s possible.
The Dodger bullpen has been less lights-out than expected, so far.
The Dodgers haven’t been the world-beaters, so far, as predicted by the preseason pundits. Obviously injuries have factored in, but all teams have injuries to deal with.

    • Alleykat said, on May 8, 2014 at 12:59 pm

Unfortunately our injuries are just the bench players…

      • zumiee said, on May 8, 2014 at 1:09 pm

Late in the game, Bochy looks down the bench and just sighs.

Being a National League guy, whenever I see gooey gushing amounts of praise being heaped up on Jeter on his Retirement Tour 2014, it makes me want to gag. During the Angels/Yankees game last night, the Angels’ broadcasters were just going on about Jeter all game. Lots of Yankee fans had grabbed up tickets to be at the game, so all kinds of Jeter-worship was going on in the crowd. One guy just stood there with a #2 Yankee jersey in his hands like he was holding the American flag from Iwo Jima.
People in the media can’t visualize how much the rest of the nation really doesn’t care that much about Jeter. Jeter’s appeal has never been nation-wide. Well, of course, in general, baseball players don’t have national attention. When companies want athletes in their TV commercials, baseball players are well down the list. Probably just above bowlers or something.

    • dirtnrocksnomo said, on May 8, 2014 at 1:17 pm

Agree with you on a a lot of that but I think Jeter is a national brand.

    • snarkk said, on May 8, 2014 at 1:17 pm

He’s a HOFer, but if he played in Milwaukee for 20 years, he’s Derek Molitor and ESPN barely shows him. I don’t give an S about the Yankees, never have, never will. How hard is it to stay a Yankee fan when they’ve won 27 championships or some such, and basically have a bottomless pit of dough to buy players? Being a Yankee fan is as hard as being a fan of water…

      • blade3colorado said, on May 8, 2014 at 1:52 pm

Agree. I’m more surprised when their money buys squat (2nd place or below) as it has done for the last dozen years or so, sans 2009, when they beat the hapless Phils.

Fans in San Francisco are rabid about the Giants and my feeling is that it has little to do with how much money the “suits” spend on players. Of course, things certainly improved when we moved from Candlestick Park to easily one of the best parks in MLB. In short, the venue is excellent for watching a game.

However, it is easier to love, relate to, and be a fan of quirky players like Pat Burrell, Angel Pagan, Pablo Sandoval, Aubrey Huff, Barry Zito, and other down to Earth people that have worn the orange and black. Conversely, Derek Jeter seems sort of a corporate creation, as do most of the Yankees that have worn the pin stripes.

    • James said, on May 8, 2014 at 2:21 pm

Apart from the fact that it’s usually Yankee-related, in general I think we want continued recognition of players and teams at a national level. Our gratification in, e.g., the Giants winning a World Series (a grand label that’s already fairly presumptuous) is bound up in it.

  11. Chipower9 said, on May 8, 2014 at 2:02 pm

I appreciate Jeter for being a damned fine ballplayer, and for staying loyal to his original team. Outside of that, I could give a flying fuck.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, we have more important shit to take care of. Like…

    BEAT LA!

Panda out tonight– Marte slid into his thumb, it’s still sore.

    • snarkk said, on May 8, 2014 at 4:24 pm

Sheez, that throw from Adrianza was so offline to LF direction, I thought Marte didn’t even come close to Panda. A thumb injury would be a good excuse for a DL visit and rehab to get Panda’s mind right…

Destruction of all these idiotic NFL mock drafts is now underway. Likely few had Bortles going 3rd to Jaguars. Will Raiduhs now stay at 5th or trade down, needing bodies?…

    • WilcoJoe said, on May 8, 2014 at 5:40 pm

Jake Mathews is still on the board. He is a beast of an OL.

    • WilcoJoe said, on May 8, 2014 at 5:41 pm

Outside of the obvious, Clowney to Houston, I think ever draft guru is 0fer.

    • snarkk said, on May 8, 2014 at 5:45 pm

Raidhuhs didn’t trade out, got the OLB Khalil Mack…

  16. WilcoJoe said, on May 8, 2014 at 5:47 pm

ATL has to take Matthews. Matt Ryan got destroyed the last couple of years.

  17. WilcoJoe said, on May 8, 2014 at 6:00 pm

Poor Johnny. Two of his teammates go ahead of him. I love it!

  18. WilcoJoe said, on May 8, 2014 at 6:07 pm

This is fucking bullshit. Why don’t they have a split screen camera shit of Johnny every time a pick is announced? I would have loved to have seen his face when the Browns took Gilbert.

  19. Bozo said, on May 8, 2014 at 6:46 pm

According to my cable guide, the game tonight is on the MLB channel. Just a heads up for all you other out of market SFG fans.

    Stay on your toes infield.

  21. snarkk said, on May 8, 2014 at 7:41 pm

    Unclear on the concept award:
Mike Pouncey, OL of Miami and one of the dudes involved in the Jonathan Martin brouhaha, tweets after Miami picks an Olineman: “Great pick! I can’t wait for our gifts he’s getting us lol”…

    • blade3colorado said, on May 8, 2014 at 7:47 pm

No shit. Especially in lieu of Sterling’s racist comments. Pouncey = IDIOT

  22. blade3colorado said, on May 8, 2014 at 7:56 pm

Wasting an excellent Voggy performance in the early going . . . Beckett has thrown 55 pitches already in 3 innings.

  23. Bozo said, on May 8, 2014 at 7:56 pm

Not sure if I agree with Pence running in those situations. Looked to me like it distracted Posey and Morse.

  35. paulinasia said, on May 8, 2014 at 8:36 pm

Not able to see the game, but just wondering: Is Beckett pitching that well, or is there something wrong with Giants hitters’ approach that the pitcher can get a leadoff double and then the 1 thru 3 can’t do a thing about it? …..

    • Bozo said, on May 8, 2014 at 8:45 pm

Ahh, in my opinion, Beckett is not pitching that well.

    • paulinasia said, on May 8, 2014 at 8:51 pm

  41. Bozo said, on May 8, 2014 at 9:20 pm

I’m not sure what’s sadder, Beckett trying to give the game away but the Giants wouldn’t take it, or Vin Scully thinking he’s calling a Brooklyn Dodger game.

  42. Bozo said, on May 8, 2014 at 9:30 pm

I have a feeling that beating LA, is in Craw’s blood.

  43. unca_chuck said, on May 8, 2014 at 9:34 pm

Jimmy Ward? Unless they convert this guy to CB, they have no reason to pick a free safety,

Hey, Nice turn there. Since the fricking 11 run win, the bats are silent.

  44. unca_chuck said, on May 8, 2014 at 9:35 pm

For all the hype Johnny Manziel gets, you HOPE the guy pukes all over himself. What a fucking tool.

  45. unca_chuck said, on May 8, 2014 at 9:37 pm

And way to go Vogie. Didn’t see the game, but he pitched 7.

Throwing the foul ball back onto the field? Jeeezus. They don;t get it, do they?

  49. Bozo said, on May 8, 2014 at 9:47 pm

Weak. This does not look like the same team that ground out that win in Pittsburgh the other day. Instead of sharing my frustration with myself here, I think I’ll just go back to throwing shit at the TV. Hope the 9ers did well in the draft.

    • zumiee said, on May 8, 2014 at 9:48 pm

  54. blade3colorado said, on May 8, 2014 at 9:52 pm

  56. blade3colorado said, on May 8, 2014 at 9:56 pm

  64. snarkk said, on May 8, 2014 at 10:25 pm

Why doesn’t Blanco try to bunt for a hit…

    • snarkk said, on May 8, 2014 at 10:30 pm

Well, now he’s 4 for 38. What’s the worst that can happen if he tries a bunt for a hit — he makes an out? I still don’t get pulling Morse when you are tied in the late innings — it’s total crap. He’s NOT that bad a defensive player. Blanco hasn’t made a defensive play yet in LF that’s been worth subbing him in during a tie game. Sub in Blanco if SF is AHEAD. The offensive fall off the cliff from Morse to Blanco is mind-boggling…

  65. blade3colorado said, on May 8, 2014 at 10:30 pm

Scully said that made Blanco 1 for 27 on the road. Pathetic.

    • snarkk said, on May 8, 2014 at 10:33 pm

Pathetic is too optimistic, blade… ;)

  66. unca_chuck said, on May 8, 2014 at 10:32 pm

Why indeed. They should be having Blanco chop everything. He certainly ain’t making hay flying out. The A-Gon play was too funny.

In the top of the 9th in Pitts, we had Perez on 1st and he got forced out. Then Adrainza on 1st, He got thrown out trying to go to 3rd on a single. neither time did Bochy run the guys. Top of the 9th this game Bochy sends Posey. Of course he gets thrown out.

    • snarkk said, on May 8, 2014 at 10:35 pm

Bochy is making some questionable moves so far this season. I scratched my head on that, too. WTF was Posey running? Botched hit and run? Weird…

      • unca_chuck said, on May 8, 2014 at 10:38 pm

        That was a straight steal.

      • snarkk said, on May 8, 2014 at 10:39 pm

WTF is Buster trying to steal late in a tie game? That’s just nonsensical…

  67. Macdog said, on May 8, 2014 at 10:33 pm

Morse taken out again. I think Lincecum has a better chance of playing a complete game this season than Morse.

  69. snarkk said, on May 8, 2014 at 10:38 pm

  70. unca_chuck said, on May 8, 2014 at 10:41 pm

He was on the Giants? 2 months? I don’t remember that.

    Meanwhile Buster’s checking his wood.

Did LA run out of pitchers or what? Why stick with Wright?…

  85. unca_chuck said, on May 8, 2014 at 10:48 pm

Well, they got someone up now. Weird.

Donny TwoTrips’ moves are sometimes hard to figure out. Wright was obviously struggling, LA still in the game, but nobody warming up? Yep, weird…

Donnie Baseball is still in mid-semester on Relief Pitchers 101, so give him a break.

blade and Chi, we didn’t have to tell you ahead of time that Panda made a lunging swing and grounded out, did we?…

I’m still watching the Toyota commercial.

Hey – got up earlier to take a piss, and came back to the computer…obviously did not remember that I had put the game on pause…pretty damned funny now after the fact…

I gotta hand it to Voggy. Three very quality starts in a row. Back on the enchiladas, I guess…

    • chipower9 said, on May 8, 2014 at 10:56 pm

Yep. Nicole must be taking “really good care” of him.

  91. Macdog said, on May 8, 2014 at 10:57 pm

Where’d all the fans go? It’s not like they gotta go and catch up on the NFL draft.

  92. Macdog said, on May 8, 2014 at 10:57 pm

    And that is that.

Ballgame, bitches! Fuck the Dodgers! Congrats to Vogey and the G-men!

Nice game. Voggy with an outstanding pitching performance and MudBug was superb with the glove. Overall, a great team win.

    • chipower9 said, on May 8, 2014 at 11:07 pm

Crawford WAS picking it like NOBODY’S business…love watching that guy play SS.

  95. snarkk said, on May 8, 2014 at 10:58 pm

Dang fine win. Come from behind, and clutch hits in extras. Guarantees at least a .500 roadie, which is more than nice. Let’s get some more!…

    • blade3colorado said, on May 8, 2014 at 11:00 pm

“OK, blade. I’m convinced. Voggy the Conqueror tonight. I just want to make sure he’s got the enchiladas…”

He must have ate them before the game, eh?

      • snarkk said, on May 8, 2014 at 11:02 pm

        Absolutely… :)
        Good call, blade.
        G’Night Flappers….

Once again, SF pen outduels LA and holds them off. Donny is in over his head vs. Bochy.

    • blade3colorado said, on May 8, 2014 at 11:02 pm

“Donny is in over his head vs. Bochy.”

Willie, that line made me remember how he out dueled Washington. :-)

Woot woot. Atsa win that shoulda happened an hour ago. Love being 3,000 miles away and watching people in LA, sitting behind Home yawning. Get three more wins and get the fuck out of that empty hole of a place.
