A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Time to Dominate and Evan Gattis is a Boss

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 13, 2014

Really happy that Huddy stopped the bleeding yesterday. There were way too many “not since ’75 have the Giants…..” stats popping up on twitter.

It’s “feast time” as the Rockies leave the comforts of their lair and are forced to play at sea level. As long as Timmy throws the ball in the general direction of Buster Posey I think we take care of business tonight.

Did anyone see Evan Gattis get hit yesterday in the 9th inning of the Rockie/Braves game? Dude, Gattis is a man-child. He got hit but the ball took the brunt of that collision. He stuck his nose down and headed briskly to first base, he knew what was up. I’ll try to find the video of that.

and, here it is. Gattis gets hit near the end.

thanks, I just found it and pit it in the main thread. WTF was Carpenter thinking?

  2. UncaChucks NinerPage said, on June 13, 2014 at 9:34 am

He wasn’t. Esp. when Teheran hit Rutledge in the head the day before. Weiss looked loike he was going to kill Carpenter.

  3. Chipower9 said, on June 13, 2014 at 9:35 am

That was so fucking bush league for Carpenter to hit him. It was clear there was no intent to hit the catcher. I don’t blame Weiss for being hot. And I think the retalitory plunking was completely justified.

You might like this Flav . . .

      Haha, pretty awesome, Chuck

That is funny as hell, Charlie. Thanks for the Friday humor.

  5. Flavor said, on June 13, 2014 at 10:45 am

I think Carpenter wasn’t too pleased with Dickerson’s reaction AFTER he hit him in the head with his bat. And if you watch it, Dickerson could have been a little more engaged in making sure the catcher was ok. At least try to fake it that you are sorry. That’s the only thing I can come up with that would explain why Carp got hot enough to drill Dickerson.

    • snarkk said, on June 13, 2014 at 11:15 am

That’s the only explanation possible, and it’s not good enough. Dickerson could have shown some more concern, but maybe that was just his reaction to it, and felt badly in his own way. It is not possible to foul a pitch off AND intentionally hit the catcher in the head/mask with the follow through. So, “retaliation” for that was beyond idiotic. This beanbrawl stuff is reaching news lows of idiocy. Suspensions need to increase to stop this before somebody takes one in the face and loses an eye or gets killed…

      • Flavor said, on June 13, 2014 at 11:26 am

And didn’t Carpenter just look like the biggest dick ever after it happened? He looked like the school bully.

  6. dirtnrocksnomo said, on June 13, 2014 at 11:16 am

I hadn’t seen that Brave/Rockies deal. Brutal sequence for the Braves catcher. Weiss looked like an unhinged leprechaun out there. Someone get him some Luck Charms™.

Cool article about Sabean and Giants . . . http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/11076758/the-moves-san-francisco-giants-gm-brian-sabean?ex_cid=espnapi_public

That is a good article, blade. I had to double check that it was ESPN.

Yeah, they usually provide compliments to the Giants like the Roman Army provided last dinner choices to the Christians. 🙂

      • zumiee said, on June 13, 2014 at 12:56 pm

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the increase in national media attention for the Giants happened right after sweeping the Mets, a New York team.

    • Chipower9 said, on June 13, 2014 at 11:54 am

Another rare article that praises our Giants from the sports news source on the right coast. Nice read…thanks for sharing, Blade.

  8. snarkk said, on June 13, 2014 at 12:03 pm

Weird but interesting article on how this year looks like record number of position players used to pitch in games. One of the managers made some remark about with all the TJ surgeries, that management is looking closely at ways to save pitchers’ arms. Well, what about the distinct possibility of blowing out the elbows or shoulders of position guys who never pitch at all, hence don’t know what they’re doing when called upon to take the mound in a blowout or semi-blowout? http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/11063042/best-worst-position-player-pitchers-2014

  9. zumiee said, on June 13, 2014 at 12:41 pm

I read in an article that Pence’s wRC+ is 224, which is good, I guess, not that I really know. And it’s possible that the act of creating new SABR stats has jumped the shark already.
I think I read somewhere else that Morse’s WAR is 2 this season so far. Any stat that boils Morse’s huge contribution to the Giants this season down to the number “2” just seems pretty meaningless to me. Congrats to the SABR world for getting OPS to stick. But now they’re getting greedy. OPS+ has reared its head. A batter can have an OPS+ of 105. Great, good for him. That sounds like it might be good.

    • zumiee said, on June 13, 2014 at 12:48 pm

How could I forget to mention wOBA, weighted on-base average?

  10. zumiee said, on June 13, 2014 at 12:52 pm

But I do have to admit I’ve been intrigued by BABIP, batting average on balls in play, which can tell us a little bit about how “lucky” a hitter has been. Hitting line-drives right at fielders, or blooping balls in-between fielders, that element of chance that is intrinsic in baseball.

  11. zumiee said, on June 13, 2014 at 1:06 pm

I found a video clip of that catch by Dee Gordon I mentioned the other day. It’s just a really fun play to see, even if it’s a Dodger. Plus he made the catch not knowing if Puig would run him over:

Too much watermelon & beer, Blade?

      • blade3colorado said, on June 13, 2014 at 3:46 pm

Nowadays Loo, it would only be watermelon that discombobulates my brain cells.

      • snarkk said, on June 13, 2014 at 5:49 pm

Believe it or not, a brew pub I go to has watermelon beer on tap. No joke. They serve it with a slice of watermelon hanging off the glass. For the ladies, supposedly. Low alcohol. Though I sat next to two dudes a few weeks back who each had a glass of it, it was a hot day. I dunno. The only fruity beer I’ll drink is a Belgian lambic…

      • dirtnrocksnomo said, on June 13, 2014 at 7:02 pm

I’ve had that beer, snarkk. 21st amendment or something like that? It’s actually pretty good. Especially on a hot day.

I’m hoping the De La Rosa that “owns” the Giants in his last 2 starts doesn’t show up this evening. However, does anyone recall why he only pitched 3 innings in his last start against us? He had no earned runs, so I am thinking a rain out or he was injured? Anywho, here’s hoping the De La Rosa (6-5) that took the loss in Sunday’s rain-shortened start against the Dodgers, giving up five runs and walking 4 over 5.1 innings shows up.

    • snarkk said, on June 13, 2014 at 5:12 pm

Rain out, that was the game Huddy wasn’t doing too well, and got bailed out by the rain. At least I think so. If I’m wrong, somebody here will correct me…

  15. UncaChucks NinerPage said, on June 13, 2014 at 4:02 pm

Yeah, that was the rain delayed tie game. I guess they will finish that one when the Giants go back to Colo.

  16. snarkk said, on June 13, 2014 at 5:24 pm

What’s the over/under on Adrianza getting the ball out of the infield tonight? 1?
I’m hoping if I insult him enough he’ll go apeshit and go 3 for 3 with a 3 run dong…

    • Flavor said, on June 13, 2014 at 5:55 pm

interesting bet. Well, you have to figure he’s getting pinch hit for at the end of the game and he’s batting 8th so let’s say he gets 3 at bats. I’ll say he gets one walk tonight so that leaves 2 at bats.
So I’m gonna say 0 out of 2 at bats…..

  19. salty said, on June 13, 2014 at 6:30 pm

  20. DJLoo said, on June 13, 2014 at 6:34 pm

What the hell……Adrianza and Lincecum go back to back.

    • Flavor said, on June 13, 2014 at 6:40 pm

Timmy got his first hit last week, I’ll say he gets more total bases tonight than Adrianza–that’s gotta be 20-1 right? Timmy might only get 2 at bats and I’ve already gifted Adrianza a walk. Ugh. Whatever, I’m sticking with it. If there’s a tie, that’s a returned bet. Ok, game on with myself.

  21. Flavor said, on June 13, 2014 at 6:42 pm

by the way, you non-local boys (who’s email addy’s that I have) look for an email shortly from me, I’ve got a question for you.

  22. zumiee said, on June 13, 2014 at 6:54 pm

The Hall of Fame breathes a sigh of relief this year, with Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, and John Smoltz all having nary a bit of steroidal stigma attached.

  23. Flavor said, on June 13, 2014 at 7:26 pm

Kruk thinks Timmy’s first inning struggles are related to poor management of adrenaline. Maybe some of that. I think he just can’t get used to the road mound in inning 1. He seems fine at AT&T.

  24. Flavor said, on June 13, 2014 at 7:52 pm

there’s his walk. This could backfire on them…..

    • dirtnrocksnomo said, on June 13, 2014 at 7:54 pm

      lqtm. He’s an athlete

  25. Flavor said, on June 13, 2014 at 7:53 pm

Timmy is too small to stand that far off the plate.

  26. willedav said, on June 13, 2014 at 7:53 pm

    Hicks, ugh.
Pretty curious move by Weiss to walk the guy hitting worse than Hicks. You get Ad out then Lincecum leads off next inning. Flav already up on himself with the BB.

    • Flavor said, on June 13, 2014 at 7:58 pm

“Flav already up on himself.” lol. I think I’m losing, but maybe I don’t understand the bet I have with myself. I’ll go back later, sort it out and ship the chips out in the direction their owed……

      • willedav said, on June 13, 2014 at 8:02 pm

I thought it was good call on ehire getting a walk in first place. I doubt Tim gets any total bases at all.

      • willedav said, on June 13, 2014 at 8:09 pm

On second thought Lincecum might not even get another AB.

  27. dirtnrocksnomo said, on June 13, 2014 at 8:01 pm

Lincecum seems to give up more hits to opposing pitchers. Not gonna look it up

  28. salty said, on June 13, 2014 at 8:05 pm

Wonder if adderall would help Lincecum? Great one minute, then concentration focus…gone

    • Flavor said, on June 13, 2014 at 8:11 pm

Unless he has ADD, which he doesn’t, then adderall isn’t gonna do anything more than give him a sweet buzz. And as a pot-head, that’s not the type of buzz he’s looking for,,,,

  29. dirtnrocksnomo said, on June 13, 2014 at 8:10 pm

Maybe, salty. He seems to be cruising then you look up and a single to the pitcher and 50+ pitches through 3. Crazy.

Another 2 out ribbie for Morse that Stubbs misplays into a triple. Nice hustle too.

    • zumiee said, on June 13, 2014 at 9:16 pm

  43. paulinasia said, on June 13, 2014 at 10:01 pm

Giants have really, and surprisingly, had a pretty good run without Belt. It’ll be interesting to see how Bochy manages the line-up upon Brandon’s return, which we all welcome. Pagan/Pence at the top of the order seem to have produced pretty well, while Posey batting 3rd, not so much (although he did score tonight after getting on). Some people opin that the batting order matters, others that it doesn’t; still, I will be interested to see if Bochy just goes back to how it was, or does something a little different.

  44. snarkk said, on June 13, 2014 at 10:18 pm

I’ll take Timmy with a 6 frame, 2 earned runs performance every time. Seemed to be operating under a little more fastball control tonight. If Giants pitchers could stop letting the opposing pitchers get on base, they’d be golden…

    • zumiee said, on June 13, 2014 at 11:03 pm

Dude lost 8 games last year. He is what he is, a finesse guy. His pitches have to be just-so. If he continues to struggle, it wouldn’t be a bad thing to go closer-by-committee for a while. Machi has been lights out, and Affeldt is pitching well. And Casilla is coming back pretty soon.

    • paulinasia said, on June 13, 2014 at 11:06 pm

I couldn’t see the game, so I don’t know which pitches they were hitting, but I’ve never really trusted that frisbee. Casilla was always my preference, but he lost Bochy’s confidence when he had that blister problem, and then Romo pretty much did the job after that. Casilla should be considered, but you’re right about Machi, he’s been lights out.

      • zumiee said, on June 13, 2014 at 11:14 pm

They didn’t really hit Romo all that hard. He got kind of dinked and dunked. But he just couldn’t put anyone away. He just seems to have more of these kinds of outings for some reason than he used to back in 2012.

      • zumiee said, on June 13, 2014 at 11:17 pm

Romo’s ERA is now 4.61, so that stat’s not looking good at the moment.

      • snarkk said, on June 13, 2014 at 11:42 pm

Romo is one of the few “finesse” closers in MLB. In fact, I don’t know if there are any other closers that throw soft stuff like he does…

  64. zumiee said, on June 13, 2014 at 11:27 pm

What might get lost about the game tonight is that Kontos poured some gas on the fire again. I know he did some stuff to help the team in 2012, but that seems like quite a while ago; and I’ve been down on this guy ever since he gave up that HR to Kershaw in the opening game last season. He’s just not that good.

  65. snarkk said, on June 13, 2014 at 11:41 pm
