A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Another Win

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 24, 2010

We’re doing what we need to against this team. I hit the sack early so I missed the end. Today, we get to enjoy the beginning of Bumgarner’s Farewell Tour. I’m out the door, I’ll catch up with you guys later…..

Welcome back, Mr. Loo. Your rightful spot at POTD has been warmed by many but filled by no one…. 🙂

Giants trainer Dave Groeschner is en route to hospital with Eugenio Velez. Will send along more updates as soon as I get them. 2 minutes ago

    Baggarly tweets:
“Giants trainer Dave Groeschner is en route to hospital with Eugenio Velez. Will send along more updates as soon as I get them. “

Posey already has to be one of the best in baseball at dinking a single to score a runner from second. He seems to have the magic touch in that situation. Anybody know of research into that bit of arcana and who else may be or have been good at that particular talent?

  4. twinfan said, on July 24, 2010 at 6:31 pm

We’re doing the same thing, I guess, WSW. I’m refreshing the Tweets every minute.

ya…what a freak thing. Hit it the opposite way. Incredible

From AP. not new, just slightly more info:
“PHOENIX (AP) -San Francisco Giants outfielder Eugenio Velez has been carried out of the dugout on a stretcher after being struck in the head by a foul ball.

Velez was standing in the dugout in the fourth inning Saturday in a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks when teammate Pat Burrell hit a sharp liner into San Francisco’s dugout. Velez was knocked off his feet and teammates immediately gathered around.

Burrell took a few moments before stepping back into the batter’s box. Giants trainers continued to work on Velez into the bottom half of the inning before strapping him to a stretcher. He was carried into the tunnel leading to the visitors clubhouse, then was taken to a hospital.”

Hate to hear that. Stay strong Velez.

  7. twinfan said, on July 24, 2010 at 6:54 pm

He went down like he was hit with a cannon ball. I’m praying hard for the young man.

prayin’ here for Eugenio, a big favorite in our house because of his amiability and autograph for my daughter last year; he was congenial and outgoing; enjoying the whole show; blessings to you, EV

You’ve brought us some dynamic moments, Eugenio. Stay strong. Be back.

With a 7-1 lead in the 7th and Madison at 80 pitches going into it, i wonder if it would not have been wise to give him a rest.

Can’t say enough about Madison. 5th start on the road after his debut at home against the Red Sox. He’s showed his mettle.

  21. stixwiz said, on July 24, 2010 at 7:22 pm

Bumgarner’s a gem alright. Just don’t wanna seem him overused with 64 games to go and then he’d be nice to have in the postseason.

  22. delmardennis said, on July 24, 2010 at 7:31 pm

From Henry:Trainer reports Velez doing OK under circumstances. Will stay at St. Joseph’s Hospital overnight. Will get more tests.

  23. stixwiz said, on July 24, 2010 at 7:39 pm

Getting a video feed tonight. May only be playing the Snakes. But with Renteria reverting to form plus the action all across the squad, this team has the look of a World Series contender. We should know more after than 4-game trek to Hotlanta next month.

  24. stixwiz said, on July 24, 2010 at 7:57 pm

Mota looking miserable tonight. Let’s pick up another reliever. The walk was worse than the dinger. Must have got pissed off at himself. Threw gas to Snyder. But its a reminder that he might not be good in close games. Same thing Casilla.

  25. stixwiz said, on July 24, 2010 at 8:15 pm

Lincecum, Cain, Bumgarner= 3 Aces. Zito + Sanchez = 2 faces. That’s a Rotation one could bet on.

  26. PawlieKokonuts said, on July 24, 2010 at 8:17 pm

Nice win. I must admit, when all the dust settles, Bumgarner’s numbers comparing favorably with Strasburg’s. Yes, I was a bit of a doubting Pawlie. Hey, Loo! you liven this house up! Welcome back.

  27. DJLoo said, on July 24, 2010 at 8:28 pm

Thanks Pawlie, and Swinging Away is superb.

Now that somebody may have been seriously hurt, I wonder if Kuiper will retire his tired “ugly finder” on foul balls into the dugout and camera area. I may be crazy but he sounded like he had a guilty conscience the rest of the game.

    Semi-annual balldude tirade to follow….

  28. delmardennis said, on July 24, 2010 at 8:32 pm

Great news regarding Eugenio: CT scan negative, no skull fractures. He is alert and talking, Bochy says.

  29. alleykat said, on July 24, 2010 at 8:37 pm

    Glad to hear that Dennis!

  30. DJLoo said, on July 24, 2010 at 8:37 pm

Krukow thinks a fat, drunk office worker with a lapful of hot dogs who brings his glove to the YARD is all the protection an infant in the front row requires.

    • Bozo said, on July 24, 2010 at 8:50 pm

He’s kinda right Loo. It’s like when you go into the ocean with slower swimmers, the percentages are probably better for you that a shark will get one of them first.

  31. twinfan said, on July 24, 2010 at 8:51 pm

He does have a concussion and yes, “Ugly Finder” needs to be retired. The Splash
had a couple idiots infer that it was Eugenio’s “fault”. These players DO know to pay attention. If you actually have competed and/or know what goes in the dugout, there’s a lot of joking amidst the play on the field. He could have turned his head toward a teammate for just an instant. There is ZERO fault, and even suggesting it is insensitive at best.
I don’t want to hear that here, where theoretically at least, it is Room A…

  32. alleykat said, on July 24, 2010 at 8:52 pm

Ryan Rohlinger removed from Fresno game.Should be here tomorrow.

  33. stixwiz said, on July 24, 2010 at 9:04 pm

Rohlinger’s about due to prove he’s MLB ready. If he does come up, i hope Bochy gives him a shot now and then. He did play just a tad of SS for the Az Giants earlier in the season. He hit extreeeemly well down there, but no word on his fielding.

  34. Bozo said, on July 24, 2010 at 9:11 pm

Twin – I hope you (or anyone else for that matter) doesn’t think I was making light of what happened to Velez in my comment to Loo. Because that wasn’t the intent.

  35. alleykat said, on July 24, 2010 at 9:16 pm

You know what Fuck the Splash Twin. Most of them over there are a bunch of idiots.Ball players are alert like you said, you have to be. being that close to the action,But this was just a freak play, and Burrell’s missile shot in the dugout would be hard for anyone to avoid, you have a split second to react.I remember earlier this year Huff pulled a laser in the dugout and that was from the left side a little harder to do.But fortunately no one was hurt on that one.

  36. twinfan said, on July 24, 2010 at 9:18 pm

I did not think that, Bozo, not to worry.

In addition to a the concussion, Eugenio is said to not be very responsive so he’s hardly out of the woods as far as long term. He was struck VERY hard with no protection whatsoever

  37. EdGdsnInExile said, on July 24, 2010 at 9:35 pm

I haven’t seen it, and don’t plan on it, but am pulling for Eugenio. Thanks for the updates gang.

  38. EdGdsnInExile said, on July 24, 2010 at 9:37 pm

By the way, as this is my first visit, glad you’re doing this blog!

  39. twinfan said, on July 24, 2010 at 9:38 pm

As far as the game and the team, even if they’re not gaining much on the Pads, they’re putting OTHER teams in the position of having to leapfrog to get in WC contention. Last year, BTW, on July 24 they were tied for the WC with the Rockies but NINE out of the division lead.

  40. twinfan said, on July 24, 2010 at 9:39 pm

Ed-great to see you here. If others don’t know Ed, he’s one of the Splashes’ very best commenters, a sharp and cordial person. Welcome.

  41. alleykat said, on July 24, 2010 at 9:46 pm

In the last 17 games, the Giants are 14-3.The only losses in that time are to Strasburg, the Ishi atrocity at home, and to Barbara Billingsley.13 of those games were on the road.

Conclusion:The Giants are playing really really well and it’s fantastic to have Wellemeyer out of the rotation.Along with minus Molina and Wellemeyer and the Additions of Posey and Bumgarner made all the difference.

Yeah welcome Ed…I do remember you from the Splash. We both were on the same bandwagon once to acquire Shin So Choo from Cleveland.

  42. EdGdsnInExile said, on July 24, 2010 at 9:52 pm

Thanks for the introduction, Twin! I think I visited Flav’s old site a couple times, but glad this is going–indeed, Room A!

One thing I noticed tonight about the Wild Card is that we’ve got the best road record of any of the true NL contenders. Not a huge factor, but we’ve done well all season on the road, and if we stay at .500 overall there, that will be a good thing.

  43. twinfan said, on July 24, 2010 at 9:55 pm

There are several players responsible for the hot streak, including the maligned Panda… Renteria, Ishikawa, the “regulars” Torres, Huff, Posey… and if you start really looking at it: 25 plus… too many of you ignore the guys you don’t like. Pretty funny sometimes to have the guy who started the rally AND scored the run totally ignored. You all know how much I rag on Eli but I don’t pretend he didn’t contribute when he does.

  44. EdGdsnInExile said, on July 24, 2010 at 9:58 pm

That’s right, Kat–and I think it’d still be a good move! By the way, as this is One Flap Down, seems OK to bring up the White Rat. I always liked the way Herzog’s teams played, and the way he seemed to get something out of all of his players. His HOF induction brought back a memory I’d like to check with you guys. At one point, Gary LaVelle blew a save one day against the Cardinals, I think at the ‘Stick. If I remember correctly, LaVelle who identified himself as a born-again Christian, said something to the Chronicle to the effect of ‘God didn’t want it to happen today’. I don’t know whether Whitey is Christian or not, but he retorted to the effect of ‘God doesn’t take care of what’s between the foul lines. You do.’ Anyone remember that?

  45. twinfan said, on July 24, 2010 at 10:19 pm

There used to be a pretty big contingent of Born Agains on the team, and as much intolerance toward them as was perceived FROM them. Ferret talked about Travis a little last night and I didn’t see the interview she referred to. Yeah, some of the proselytyzing is overboard but frankly, I don’t care either way. The Christian guys used to be accused of not caring about winning enough- that they felt the Big Guy took care of things, “c’est la vie”.. that was bullshit, as well. As a “lefty” who hasn’t been to church to worship for decades, I neither endorse or condemn. Travis can praise the Lord, another can beg to the Devil… just lay off the backfoot slider and hit the cut off man.

  46. EdGdsnInExile said, on July 24, 2010 at 10:27 pm

Agreed, Twin. And while I don’t think I’ve got the quote right, that was the essence of what Whitey was saying–just do the job–as well as some possessiveness that ‘I’m in control on the field…’.

Man, a couple days a week looking in on the Splash is quite enough. Only a couple of true sleazes post here, there it’s a pandemic. But I’ve got a job to do, you know?

    • TedSpe said, on July 24, 2010 at 11:05 pm

Well, you’re the fuck to do it but…is it worth it? Cuz I’ll go in and pandemicize my ass all over there if you think it’ll help

  50. twinfan said, on July 24, 2010 at 11:12 pm

I’ve tried to get you guys to post there for a long time. My d-Con team.

My problem is, and this sounds like a Dolly Parton song:

      Put so many on ignore
Nothing left to read no more

But I’ll bite the buttress and check it out. If I don’t make it back, give my harmonica to Betty-Lou

  51. delmardennis said, on July 24, 2010 at 11:33 pm

That place might need a little bit more than just d-Con to eradicate all its vermin. A regular Roach Motel—they never check out.
