A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

How to Win a Game you Should Have Lost

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 7, 2010

It’s done in two easy steps, actually:

Step one: Don’t get any hits in the 9th inning, tie the game. Check.

Step two: Don’t get any hits in the 11th inning, take lead. Check.

Simple.

We are seeing what happens to this offense when Buster Posey isn’t hitting…..

With Renteria sidelined with his latest injury we are once again staring at a depleted bench. Baggs wondered why we are still carrying 13 pitchers and decided it’s because Romo is the only one with an option. What was the point of trading for Ramirez  if they are going to hold on to Casilla? In fact, a better question is, why did Sabean trade for Ramirez in the first place? He’s pitched 1/3 of an inning since he got here and he’s redundant to Casilla (or vice versa). So we end up trading for a guy who we don’t need and who doesn’t pitch, meanwhile our bench languishes with three healthy players….I don’t know, seems kinda stupid to me……

Yep. Interesting relationship with those two it seems. We’ve seen this time and again with players on the roster that probably shouldn’t be and many that should be get misused/abused when they finally are.

  2. Sportdude said, on August 7, 2010 at 8:07 am

Craig..you are implying that Sabean did something dumb? I’m shocked Even with the great Huff signing, (and Uribe).. Sabean is still way south on the ledger in the last few years…Drafting players is not done by the GM. Trades and free agent signings are…For every Huff signing…..wait. No need to rehash it…

    Go Panda…

  3. Sportdude said, on August 7, 2010 at 8:08 am

just to clarify… Scouting dept tells the GM who to draft. If anyone wants to give Sabes credit for getting the staff I’m ok with that, but that isn’t enough to balance all the stupid stuff…

    • JBat said, on August 7, 2010 at 9:58 am

The GM certainly signs off on the picks, so your point is moot…

  4. Sportdude said, on August 7, 2010 at 8:09 am

PS Beanne living off past rep too..

  5. dirtnrocksnreno said, on August 7, 2010 at 8:20 am

Back to Sabean bashing? Look at this years roster. Rowand and Renteria aren’t giving the club what they expected but have had some key contributions. Zito is performing well. Huff, Uribe, Burrell, Torres, Sandoval. Those are all players signed that are contributing to this clubs success. I don’t agree with carrying 13 pitchers but the pen has been shored up with moves at the deadline. Damn that Sabean. Putting a club together that is 1 game out in the west and leading the wildcard.

Nice 1 run extra inning victory last night.

      Amen.

We need one more win this weekend…Roehlinger for Renteria. I still could see a Guillen pickup and I don’t care if Ramirez comes down with a mysterious arm ailment to give Guillen a roster spot.

Guillen gives us more pop than Nate…looks like still no risk pickup to me.

  7. pickledgringo said, on August 7, 2010 at 8:49 am

Sabean has done a fine job considering, though another deadline flop tested my resolve. No GM is going to hit the mark 100% of the time, and it appears he is moving towards a ‘young guy’ mentality so he is adapting to an entirely different approach.

The manager? Not so much – that’s another thing entirely. I honestly do not think keeping Posey in the minors after ST was on Sabean, nor starting Bowker opening day only to sit him the rest of the season. Or, to keep Rowand in the lineup for 2 months. Etc. Etc.

  8. dirtnrocksnreno said, on August 7, 2010 at 8:58 am

GH, Guillen would be an interesting move. I’m not opposed to it. Someone probably will get a mystery illness. What is Velez’s status on the roster? Roster management has been interesting to watch this year. They are coming down to some hard choices but have made the moves that got the club to this point.

  9. Giant Head said, on August 7, 2010 at 9:05 am

I would give Guillen a week as a starter in right and if he does not produce…his ass would be grass. Guillen and Burrell will basically be free veterans…

  10. dirtnrocksnreno said, on August 7, 2010 at 9:57 am

Guillen Roehlinger. Whatever. Anything to strengthen the bench a bit.

  11. JBat said, on August 7, 2010 at 9:59 am

For those who love to rip the Giants, the team is currently 16 games over .500 and a game out of first place. The idiots at the helm must be doing something right.

  12. stixwiz said, on August 7, 2010 at 10:00 am

Braves and Giants are so closely matched while playing in Atlanta that IMHO a series split is more likely than not. At worst that would leave the team a couple games out of first heading home to four games dining on bear burgers and then three with the Pads in the visitors role.Yes, an ‘injury’ to one of those relievers may be the way to go when this series is in the books. If Renteria does not look to be ready within three games, the possible downside of a severiously depleted bench would almost insist on a d.l. switch with Rohlinger.

Roster confusion will go from serious to downright crazyquilt when Affeldt and Runzler come off the d.l. I do believe that Runzler, though, has options remaining. Lopez has been critical to at least a couple of the recent wins, so he has been worth the departure of both Bowker and Martinez. I suspect Sabes picked up Ramirez because the price was so low. Now Bochy is stuck with the consequences.

  13. Nipper said, on August 7, 2010 at 10:02 am

More moves will take place. They always do. This team is evolving perhaps younger. Rent is basically a part timer. Rowand too. Those are big differences. And Posey is of course vital in just a few short months. Sandoval is still not the same at the plate as he should be. It’s probably all in his head.

  14. JBat said, on August 7, 2010 at 10:04 am

Gringo, please explain what Bochy has fucked so badly to get us where we are, 16 over and a game out with two months to play?

Jesus, dude, get a little perspective.

  15. JBat said, on August 7, 2010 at 10:05 am

Rent’s injury really handcuffed Bochy last night. I like Ishi, but he’s not the guy you want batting against Wagner with the winning run at third. That guy is going to eat most lefties for lunch.

  16. Nipper said, on August 7, 2010 at 10:19 am

Sabean is doing fine at least by the results this season. Can’t complain and those who do should just pipe down.

  17. bigflavor said, on August 7, 2010 at 10:22 am

My point is that the ramirez pick up, admittedly for nothing, seems pointless to me and actually is hurting us at thus point ..

  20. stixwiz said, on August 7, 2010 at 10:44 am

Flav: Agreed on Ramirez. Sabean yielded to temptation without considering possible consequences. Epstein probably made the offer and Brian jumped in with both feet. There was no time for review or deeper consideration with the involvement of other analysts within the system, maybe not even Bochy. It all came down in the closing hours or minutes before the deadline.

  21. delmardennis said, on August 7, 2010 at 10:44 am

    • delmardennis said, on August 7, 2010 at 11:10 am

Exactly. Nobody seems to remember much or truly give a rat’s ass about the most storied record in baseball, most storied record in all of sports being broken. Sad. I wonder how Alex Smith looked in practice today.

      • xootsuit said, on August 7, 2010 at 11:46 am

Judge Illston scheduled Barry B’s trial for the third week of March 2011. The trial setting yesterday came about as close as possible to the anniversary of the big HR. Fireworks, everyone. (btw, given the judge’s schedule in March, it looks to me like everyone’s blowing smoke about trying Barry. The new US Atty, once she gets approved by congress and takes over, will get rid of the case. Book it. Not that anybody cares.)

  23. wswinb4igo said, on August 7, 2010 at 11:04 am

At the deadline…everybody agreed we needed bp help….Now that it’s here and performing admirably, you guys want a bench player. Rohlinger? Come on…Let the bb people work it out, you guys sit back and do what you do best. Critisize and say I told you so…

  24. alleykat said, on August 7, 2010 at 11:09 am

Not getting a SS at the deadline was the Giants biggest mistake.Renteria probably heading for his 3rd stint on the DL.Uribe with hamstring issues every year along with Rent. It’s a shaky position for the Giants, and are only option is Rohlinger? who never played much SS till this year?

  25. JBat said, on August 7, 2010 at 11:12 am

Flav, my comments were direct at PG and sportsdude, not you. I’m certainly not above criticizing GM’s and managers, it’s what baseball fans do, but to listen to those guys, you’d think the team was in dead last.

  26. dirtnrocksnreno said, on August 7, 2010 at 11:15 am

kat, outside of help in the pen SS was a move I would liked to have seen too. A light hitting plus defender at SS would have been an improvement. Rohlinger isn’t the best solution but he is what the club has in house. IMO Sabean made a bold move by not acquiring a position player. He told the clubhouse he believes in them. Now its up to the players. Carrying 13 is a poor strategic decision and last night illustrated that but SF got the win. Something is going to shake out in the coming days.

  27. bigSarge said, on August 7, 2010 at 11:56 am

Can someone tell me why if Guillen would be so helpful to us since he was DFAd by the Royals?

  28. dirtnrocksnreno said, on August 7, 2010 at 12:02 pm

Considering how much of a head case the dude is I’m not totally sold on Guillen but he could supply some pop off the bench and more flexibility in the OF. He would be a better alternative than Schierholtz for a late inning PH.

  29. Michael said, on August 7, 2010 at 12:05 pm

If the fucking criteria is that he hasn’rt been used ( Ramirez), apply the samne fucking criteria to Rohlinger, children. Her was not being used AT ALL his last stint. And don’t tell me it’s “different” because it ain’t. Other than different to the advantage of carrying the 13th pitcher. That’s the guy who ALLOWS them to extend the pen as in the 10-0 win. Yeah, turned out WAY lopsided, but 7 run lead in Colorado has been shown to not be enough repeatedly over the years, more than anywhere else in baseball perhaps. Bochy is able to match hitter to pitcher more than ever now and he is the undisputed master at utilizing a pen. Dispute his prowess there and you ain’t even Room B anymore, you are Room Sophwad. “You” here is the “Royal” usage so I don’t need individuals doing the butt hurt dance. Dirt is correct that something will change on the roster in the nexrt few days, but that will be AS PLANNED. Leave this to me and my boys at Giant’s HQ, it’s a matter for experienced, cool heads, not the Johnny Alarmist crowd here who have had heads rolling like at the Antoinette Bowling Alley.

  30. xootsuit said, on August 7, 2010 at 12:05 pm

Speaking of roid raging HR records, you see A-Rod got hit on the shin during BP today? Berkman nailed him on the shin — while he wasn’t looking, I guess. He then limped to the OF and rolled around crying like a 10 year old on a 12 yr old LLeague team. No shit.

  31. Michael said, on August 7, 2010 at 12:15 pm

If they get Guillen, which they should ABSOLUTELY try to do, Bochy will most likely go to a set line up ( which most here have advocated even when it was not appropriate). You’d see an OF of Burrell, Torres, Guillen. Sandoval, Uribe, Sanchez, Huff, in the infield, and Buster catching. Bags notes that some thing Posey is tiring, they might have to consider putting the pads on Panda once a week over Whitefuck. REALLY funny: many of the same fucks who screamed bloody murder when Rent got a start and/or Ishikawa didn’t against a lefty; are now feigning outrage that Travis had to hit for himself against Wagner. Total clueless hypocrite fuckwads. Sit down, shut up, as before: leave the thinking to the brained. And again, if I didn’t say your name, apply as needed.

  32. zumarust said, on August 7, 2010 at 12:18 pm

“Maddux and Glavine got the wide strike because they hit their spot every time.”

Well, I’ve given up trying to understand the mentality of umpires after that ump in the infamous Mets game said he called Ishikawa out at home because “the catcher made a decent attempt to get the tag down.”

  33. Michael said, on August 7, 2010 at 12:23 pm

Final note for now: rarely agree with Cohn but he’s dead on with Zitferbrains: the guy will/would give up a lead with or without run support. Fuck the crocodile tears. They are 14-9 in his starts, he’s making a kazillion dollars and after three years pitching he’s finally up to 35 percent of his salary in actual fucking performance. He’s lucky some team lackey didn’t fix his brakes after 2008…

  34. zumarust said, on August 7, 2010 at 12:26 pm

Watching the Dodgers last night….what a lifeless team. Anyone that thinks that disarray at the ownership level doesn’t affect the morale of a team, should check out these ’10 Dodgers. I’m so used to seeing the Giants chat away in the dugout, and I rarely see any conversation in the Dodgers dugout. Torre’s got to be so fed up with that group, I’m sure he’s done with them after this season. I’d be really surprised if he comes back for more of Dodgertown.
    —-
And, btw, how’s that Tejada thing working out for the Padres? Tejada looks done at the plate. And he’s a downgrade to their defense. Enberg and his broadcast partner sound pretty concerned lately about the Pads.

  35. delmardennis said, on August 7, 2010 at 12:34 pm

Renteria won’t be available again tonight. Bochy is hopeful for maybe tomorrow. They should stick Rent down in the pen for the next few days. They could always use another guy who sits around and does absolutely nothing.

  36. dirtnrocksnreno said, on August 7, 2010 at 12:35 pm

Twin, that looks like a good line up to me. I forgot about Whiteside. Why not have him make some room on the roster? As you say Sandoval can back up. I am indifferent to Old Whitey but I think Bochy just likes the guy. Maybe he see some of himself in him.

I thought Zitferbrains was pretty damn good too.

Reno—yeah—we were staying in S Tahoe, but I had to run my oldest to the airport in Reno so we spent some time there.
I thought T Burger was decent. Is there a better local place we should hit next time? Rafting on the Truckee and playing in that water park with my younger kids was a blast. Some interesting people watching there as well. A few lovely ladies and some colorful locals such as the guy who had “Fuck the Police” largely tattoed on his back.

Just so I have this straight, are these real burger joints or nicknames for brothels?

  43. delmardennis said, on August 7, 2010 at 1:40 pm

RF Torres, 2B Sanchez, 1B Huff, C Posey, SS Uribe, LF Burrell, 3B Pablo, CF Rowand, RH Cain.

  44. Michael said, on August 7, 2010 at 1:42 pm

We’ll see Rowand tonight. He and Huff are the only ones with history and success against Hudson
    Rowand is 8 for 18 1 double 1 RBI, no K’s
Huff 7 for 20 1 double 3 RBI. Burrell is just 6 for 31 but the only HR.
So we won’t see Ishkawa. Posey sits tonight or tomorrow, OF both days is probably Pat, Aaron, Andres. Rowand and Burrell both have good numbers against Lowe, as well.

  45. TedSpe said, on August 7, 2010 at 1:42 pm

  47. bigflavor said, on August 7, 2010 at 1:53 pm

I think the reason there hasn’t been any line up bitching lately, is the lack of extremes right now. No one is really hot, no one is super cold except maybe Buster, everyone is just sort of plugging along. That’s not good, this offense needs someone hot at all times. There’s just really no one or two guys to point the finger at over the last week or so……

  48. Michael said, on August 7, 2010 at 1:58 pm

  51. bigflavor said, on August 7, 2010 at 2:09 pm

true. But we are, for the most part, hitting like shit across the board. No one is hot. There’s no *preferred line up* right now. We won last night’s game without a hit in either the 9th or the 11th. And we’ve got to face Hudson tonight. It’s gonna be ugly……
OK, I’m out for a while, check back in with you guys later……

  52. San Dog said, on August 7, 2010 at 2:11 pm

Lots of funny stuff from you today, Ted. Very nice.
Using burger joint names as code for brothels? Not a bad idea. Kind of reminds me of how in college we used to refer to weed as “Joey.” We’d gather up at a party and say things like “Did anyone bring Joey?—-I really need to find him” “Joey’s out by the car—I’ll show you where he is.”

    Ironic?

You dog Gringo for complaining, then dog the team for not having enough bench guys. A lot of people here are none to thrilled with the 13 pitchers, but it seems to have worked. I ain’t that thrilled either, esp since Ramirez and Castilla appear to be the same guy. Bautista is gone at least . . .

Criminy, bring Belt up. Will the team crumble if Casillas goes? No.

Giants bench is merde. Even moreso with 13 pitchers, which is nutz. Like others, I said B4 deadline they needed another OF bat, against good pitching like Braves and other playoff type teams, the weakness shows up. They’ll do well to split tomorrow.
