A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

How to Win a Game you Should Have Lost

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 7, 2010

It’s done in two easy steps, actually:

Step one: Don’t get any hits in the 9th inning, tie the game. Check.

Step two: Don’t get any hits in the 11th inning, take lead. Check.

Simple.

We are seeing what happens to this offense when Buster Posey isn’t hitting…..

With Renteria sidelined with his latest injury we are once again staring at a depleted bench. Baggs wondered why we are still carrying 13 pitchers and decided it’s because Romo is the only one with an option. What was the point of trading for Ramirez  if they are going to hold on to Casilla? In fact, a better question is, why did Sabean trade for Ramirez in the first place? He’s pitched 1/3 of an inning since he got here and he’s redundant to Casilla (or vice versa). So we end up trading for a guy who we don’t need and who doesn’t pitch, meanwhile our bench languishes with three healthy players….I don’t know, seems kinda stupid to me……

    True that, Kat…

  2. Michael said, on August 7, 2010 at 6:26 pm

The price asked for a bat B4 the deadline was out of line. Sabean was wise to pass on it.

  3. PawlieKokonuts said, on August 7, 2010 at 6:28 pm

    well 1-23 RISP says it

  4. Michael said, on August 7, 2010 at 6:34 pm

Everytime they go a couple games without scoring a few, we get the “heads should roll” bullshit. *Either* team will “do well to split” tomorrow, they’re evenly matched with good pitching on both sides. 1 for 23 RISP says it less than 5 runs per game in July. Braves have good pitching, you guys to a man are total alarmists. For the 104th time this season, fucking chill out.

sheesh I thought Wagner was done when the MetsPhils/Astros ditched him; obviously not

  6. Michael said, on August 7, 2010 at 6:35 pm

If you need something to freak out about, FreddyFuck is a good place to start, though. About time to go Uribe/Rent in the middle.

  7. macdog said, on August 7, 2010 at 6:37 pm

I don’t care how good Wagner looks right now, the Braves shouldn’t be printing World Series tix as long as he’s the closer.

  8. PawlieKokonuts said, on August 7, 2010 at 6:40 pm

I did not imply a lack of credit to the Braves as-expected good pitching. I am not alarmarating; just not celebrating. I have come to to some understanding of Twin’s baseball world view. It is the Ying-Yang-Both-Success-and-Failure-Seek-Their-Own-Median-and-Do-Not-Take-the-Micro-But-Embrace-the-Macro-View-Fuckwad approach. Reasonable enough. Most of the some of the time.

  9. PawlieKokonuts said, on August 7, 2010 at 6:42 pm

“Approach” should’ve been uppercased as Twinfan’s proprietary penchant for punditry.

  10. Michael said, on August 7, 2010 at 6:43 pm

Well, I’m going out to dinner. The nervous Nellies will start posting soon, I’ll leave it you guys for the evening. “Oh NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! They need Dunn, Hart, Pujols, Ruth!!! This will never do! Awful! Heads must roll! Botchy must go! Why did they trade Nathan? Felix! FELIZ! Linden! Torcato! DAVE ROBERTS ACK!”

PG, I consider that silly. Bochy has managed to get this bunch to coalesce into a decent time, probably overachieving. Even second place may be a worthy accomplishment, given the ponies. But I sure as hell am not throwing in the towel on August fecking seventh fer feck sake.

We have had a Tony Torcato reference! Before Pedroia came along, Tony T was the pride of Woodland High. (If you don’t count Craig Penrose)

  16. TedSpe said, on August 7, 2010 at 7:13 pm

Granted this game was a bummer but there’s no shame in losing to the Braves and they can still split. Sheesh

  17. dirtnrocksnreno said, on August 7, 2010 at 7:14 pm

I got called into the office today. On my way home I caught the Glaus bases juiced knock, thought “ball game” and turned it off. Another tough loss for Cain. Hopefully Sanchez comes out strong tomorrow. He’ll have Whiteside catching, No?

Speaking of juiced. What is going to happen with these players that have admitted to juicing and continued their career? Will coaching opportunities be available to guys like Glaus, A-Rod, Giambi etc after they retire? I know McGwire got the nod in STL but personally I would like to see these guys frozen out after their playing days come to an end.

San Dog, If you haven’t before check out Silver Peak Brewery next time. Tasty brews and great burgers. I would recommend the barley crusted chicken sandwich though. Sounds wierd. Tastes good.

“JBat these comments were back-to-back by you.

    Ironic?

You dog Gringo for complaining, then dog the team for not having enough bench guys. A lot of people here are none to thrilled with the 13 pitchers, but it seems to have worked. I ain’t that thrilled either, esp since Ramirez and Castilla appear to be the same guy. Bautista is gone at least . . .

Criminy, bring Belt up. Will the team crumble if Casillas goes? No.”

Not ironic at all. I didn’t dog the Giants for not having enough bench guys, I simply pointed out that Renteria’s (short term) injury put Bochy in a bind in that particular situation. That statement was not meant to criticize or condone the Giants for carrying 13 pitchers. Since Rent is due back by tomorrow or the next day, what is your point? Of course the team wouldn’t crumble if Casillas left. If you think that is what I was trying to say, you’re mistaken.

I dog Gingo for complaining because the guy is at his most acrimonious the day after the Giants win a game. He routinely rips Sabean and Bochy during a year when the Giants are right in the thick of a pennant race. It makes me wonder what he’d say if the team won the World Series.

  19. San Dog said, on August 7, 2010 at 7:24 pm

Thanks for the tip Dirt—I’ll check that place out next time.

Has there ever been evidence linking Glaus to juicing? On a related note, how long do we have to be tortured by that motherfucking ’02 Angels team??? Eckstein, Glaus, Bud Black, Lackey….

Now see? It’s total bullshit comments like that that irk me and others, Like Bochy has some kind of fucking agenda to see the Giants fail. Give me a break. And worst manager in baseball? Fucking please. What a total load of bullshit you try to peddle around here Gringo.

The idea of openiing in Taiwan is bugging me too. I just read Baggs blog about it. $10K. Fucking chump change. If they do it they should get 5-7 days off upon return prior to the next series.

  22. JBat said, on August 7, 2010 at 7:34 pm

Go Snakes, go Bucs, go Nats. The Pirates have been giving the Rox hell for the last couple of weeks. I figured the Friars would roll tonight, but they’re losing in the 7th.

  23. bigflavor said, on August 7, 2010 at 7:36 pm

Pickled G— calling him the “worst manager in baseball” is nothing more than a pathetic attempt to get attention. You predicted 88 yet you think with a different manager they’d win 95? Obviously you’re just pulling this out of your ass. Yet, even from your ass, I’m curious to have you detail where these extra 7 wins come from. What would this new manager be doing to secure this elusive extra 7 wins? And how is it that the worst manager in baseball is only worth 7 more wins?

  24. unca chuck said, on August 7, 2010 at 7:37 pm

    It never ends Dog.

That bleacher report article is about the stupidest thing I’ve read in a while. If that applies to Bochy, it applies to all the rest. They ALL have to run on a 2-1 count. They all have to sac bunt in th 8th, blah blah blah.

If, if, if, maybe, maybe, maybe. Blah blah blah.

    • TedSpe said, on August 7, 2010 at 9:19 pm

What in the name of all that is sane..is a Bochy “presser”?

  25. bigflavor said, on August 7, 2010 at 7:39 pm

Without even trying I could list off 15 managers worse than bochy. I’d start with geren and that nomination isn’t even arguable. Torre is worse than bochy, too….

Rocks and Pads both gag it up…
Where the doomiots always fall short: they never account for the fact that the Giants’ competition is flawed. More so than the Giants. As called long ago: a fairly easy division win, about 5 games, enough for Bochy to rest his guys in preperation for the postseason and parade down Market…

  33. Michael said, on August 7, 2010 at 9:00 pm

Just doing an elementary search on worst MLB manager, what you get is, basically: all of them. Bochy’s name doesn’t jump out, you see Piniella a LOT… before he got canned, Fredi G was big, Guillen always gets a ton of votes, Gardy, any of the old guys, even Leyland, get a lot of senility votes. Geren, mais oui. Anyway, Blockhead really doesn’t get much mention as upper tier OR lower. He’s a JAMMIE…

  34. bigflavor said, on August 7, 2010 at 9:27 pm

I’m done with PG. Post something with some reason behind it. Argue with a purpose. Otherwise, take those hack-posts back to a blog with less informed Giants fans……

  35. bigflavor said, on August 7, 2010 at 9:32 pm

Predicting 88 wins and yet constantly blathering on about Bochy being the worst manager in the league, then predicting 95 without reason or purpose with another manager……that’s enough to delete his posts. He can still post here, but from here on out he has to actually make a point backed up by reason, and supported by something valid…..

    Torres-CF
    Renteria-SS
    Huff-RF

Funny thing about Palm Springs. I have yet to meet a gay man who didn’t timeshare….
No. That’ll just get Flav to kick me off the Flap.
    Here’s the thing.
I joke around here all the time and occasionally have an opinion. But I never state an opinion unless I’m ready to back it up. I know a majority of the gentlemen (question mark) that regurlarly post here have much more “baseball” knowledge than I do.
But I come here every single fucking day because there are incredibly funny, literate, knowledgeable posts usually from people who actually love the Giants as much as I do and I actually learn almost every day more and more about baseball.
But when someone just comes here and states “If Bochy wasn’t the manager, we’d be ahead of San Diego!!!”
What the fuck is that??!! I hate that shit!!!
I don’t mind relevant criticism backed by intelligent hypothesis. Hell, I enjoy it.
But the Flap is not a place to go “See? Bochy blew that one when Sandoval was 0 for 4” What the fuck kind of substantive post is that?
That’s fucking Splash talk. The Splash is where you can be an incoherent fuckhead. Even morons are welcome on the Flap ( I should know) but not doomerish nonsensical shitheads who’s only joy is taking away the joy of others?? Please, please go away!!
So…how’s about that Jerry Rice, huh?…..

  38. bigflavor said, on August 7, 2010 at 9:45 pm

excellent post, Ted……And as I said in my 9:32pm post– I’m not allowing anymore blathering posts, that have no substance behind them, to sit on my blog anymore without some reason and purpose behind them. Have a point, back it up, otherwise head back to the Splash or some Yahoo chat room…….

    • TedSpe said, on August 7, 2010 at 9:52 pm

Thanks, Flav. But just a warning to all true Flappers…
As God is my witness, I shall continue to post one liners here. The funny ones stolen, the unfunny ones original

  39. Michael said, on August 7, 2010 at 9:51 pm

I think Travis is out again. Rowand has killer numbers against Lowe, I’m sure he’ll be in tomorrow. Ishi’s horrible ABs in a couple games might have done him in.

    • TedSpe said, on August 7, 2010 at 9:53 pm

Done him in sounds serious. You mean for a while? Or…..

  40. delmardennis said, on August 7, 2010 at 9:55 pm

Rowand is 11 for 23 off of Lowe, Ishi just 1 for 7. But since they usually eschew split totals, I’d sit Rowand and give Ish a start. My managerial gut instinct tells me he’s going downtown tomorrow.

  41. Michael said, on August 7, 2010 at 9:58 pm

Bochy has always been a very good handler of a pitching staff, an uninspired strategist, a “player’s manager” who backs “his guys”in public. He will lose fewer games than a Piniella, and win fewer. The off shoot- as I said, a JAMMIE.

  42. TedSpe said, on August 7, 2010 at 10:00 pm

See? You just don’t get it. You’re calling Bochy inconsistent.
How? What? When? Where? Who? And kissing twinfan’s ass is worse then arguing with him.

  43. bigflavor said, on August 7, 2010 at 10:01 pm

another pointless post, PG. The next post that stays on this board is going to be the one that outlines, in great detail, why BOCHY is the worst manager in baseball. And if you were a guy who predicted 72 wins or whatever I could let the “95” slide but at 88 THAT is having your cake and eating it too, chump……

  44. Michael said, on August 7, 2010 at 10:02 pm

Ted, I really think that Nate’s performance ( or lack of) and now Travis’ downturn has made Gullien a lock. Could be wrong, as astounding as that would be, but doubt it.

  45. Michael said, on August 7, 2010 at 10:05 pm

You certainly may agree with me, PG, anytime someone does that, it’s a sign of their progress. Bochy is, on balance, a better than average manager simply due to his genius with a bullpen. The pen’s standing this year with that unsavory cast of characters is absolute proof of my contention.

  46. bigflavor said, on August 7, 2010 at 10:06 pm

no dumbshit, none of those posts have outlined, in detail with fact, why Bochy is the worst manager in baseball. STFU or post something that supports he’s the worst manager in baseball……

  47. bigflavor said, on August 7, 2010 at 10:08 pm

and if you find anything that supports he’s the worst manager in baseball I’m zapping that too until you explain how you claim they win 88 but would win 95 with a better manager. What’s that guy going to do that gets you those extra 7 wins. I’m waiting…..

  48. Michael said, on August 7, 2010 at 10:10 pm

If the Phils can win a WS with Unca_Charlie, we can sure as hell win it with the Brucester. At a certain point though, I’d think even a Bochy hater would kinda fucking realize he is not getting canned this year, sit back, enjoy, and if you must, just pray he finds enough acorns. This is an exciting season, one HAS to just enjoy misery if they can’t embtrace it.

  49. TedSpe said, on August 7, 2010 at 10:14 pm

What. No one got my double entendre?
twin, Jenkins is against the signing of Guillen but he also wrote ” The Giants’ have a strong Hispanic presence, enough to keep Guillen on relatively tame behavior for two months” But he closed with “the whole idea seems wrong”
    Thoughts gentlemen (question mark)?

  50. Michael said, on August 7, 2010 at 10:15 pm

Listen, this is for everybody: YOU make a claim, YOU fucking back it,.Making an unsupported claim and then saying others have to DISPROVE it is lame, ignorant, and against EVERY motherfucking forensics rule in the history of debate.

  55. Michael said, on August 7, 2010 at 10:24 pm

If getting fired is proof of being a bad manager, he may be the 453rd worst in history. 16 seasons, canned once after 3 WINNING seasons is proof the OTHER way, dilwad… What idiocy. I guess Martin is the worst ever then.

  61. TedSpe said, on August 7, 2010 at 10:40 pm

Hare Krishna. What a waste of time. This all started when Flav asked for the secret to the magical number 7 wins that the Giants would have with another manager. I’m starting to think it took an hour or two before he realized he didn’t have to take off his shoes to help him count between 88 and 95.
No who, what, when, where, how.

Really,PG is just a bad thinker. He might really think that Bochy getting fired after 3 winning seasons is proof that he’s the worst manager in baseball. That’s scary that he might think it’s proof, certainly it doesn’t bode well for Gringo’s future in thinking.

  65. Michael said, on August 7, 2010 at 10:55 pm

  66. TedSpe said, on August 7, 2010 at 10:57 pm

Well, Gringo doesn’t really require a future in thinking.
After all, he *is* in Palm Springs. Cocktail?
50-50 road trip tomorrow. With or without Guillen.
    Goodnight, gentlemen (question mark)

  67. delmardennis said, on August 7, 2010 at 11:00 pm

Since Bochy said Pat Burrell more or less would be his everyday left fielder, because he is “grinding out at-bats, getting on base and hitting for power, which is what we need right now.”…I guess that truly makes Shitholtz expendable. Nate + some POS P who’d never see the light of day should garner Guillen, no?

    • TedSpe said, on August 7, 2010 at 11:07 pm

Since Guillen was DFA’d, I’d say a tall latte and a hand job might do the trick
