July 7th and July 15th……
Those were the last two games that we saw some “Back-to-back Cy Young Action” from Timmy. On the 7th he won the game with a 7 inning, 4hit, 10K game. The next week he complimented that gem with a complete game shut out of the Mets. Since then…….eh.
This is HIS time. We needed him last week and the week before and he failed. Hell, we really need him every time he takes the mound. But today WE NEED HIM!!!! Dirrrrrty and MadBum just rose from the dregs of the bottom of the rotation to right our rudderless ship. On the road, no less. Chris Carpenter is just a man, he’s been hittable this year, certain games easily so. I’m not worried about him in the slightest…..
But I am worried about the man we are sending out to the mound. It’s put-down-the-bong-STFU-time. No more excuses or new wind ups or pretty long, wavy black hair. Storm the hill like the two time CY winner you are and win this goddamn game…….
In the “coulda, woulda, shoulda” Whining Division, Tony Larussa forged a one game lead over Mark Cuban and Terrell Owens . . . To wit:
“The slump is getting to manager Tony La Russa, who complained about home plate umpire Gary Cederstrom’s calls in the ninth inning while Brian Wilson(notes) was finishing for his 35th save in 38 chances.
“You can go ahead and fine me, I don’t care,” La Russa said. “There were several strikes, a guy as good as Brian Wilson, he doesn’t need. Who knows how that inning would have been?”
Yep, Lincecum needs to shine this evening. Tiny Tim has hasn’t come up big in ages it seems, e.g., he allowed 14 earned runs in 14 innings while losing three straight starts. It’s the first three-game losing streak EVER FOR HIM.
That last strike to Holliday was a terrible call, but screw LaRussa anyway.
At this point with Timmy, I just want him to give us a chance to win the game. He did that in Atlanta only two starts ago, so hopefully these last two debacles were aberrations.
I’m kinda digging the offense now, which is easy to say after the last two games. It’s just cool to see that our 3-4-5 hitters are capable of launching one at any time, and that hasn’t been the case for a long time.
Also, does anyone else here cringe when a ball is hit to Fontenot? Still, the thought of Panda at SS is beyond cringe-worthy.
I just wanna say, and I realize this *may* come off as ass kissing, but I just wanna say…
Flav, your intro each day to a new strigent set of posts by us, the usual gang of idiots, is always inspiring, thoughtful, clever, funny and well written.
I’ve said this before so no shame in saying it again.
Thanks so much for oneflapdown77 and your continued inspiration.
With the exception of a couple of insurgents, I truly enjoy reading and posting here about the Giants or whatever the fuck else may come up
Okay, as for Lincecum…
My feeling is the boy’s been off the bong too long.
Time to grow the hair even longer, toke a little stronger and borrow FSanchez’s thonger
thanks Ted. Ok, I am hitting the road from the city that shall not be mentioned 🙂
I am not anticipating a win, but I want Timmy to pitch to keep us in the game unlike his last three starts.
keep it to a couple of runs and let the bats have a shot. May be a good day to rest Burrell and I don’t care if Rowand gets the start but makes more sense to put Huff in left and Ishi at first.
“I am not anticipating a win…”
Did you have to be so definitive, GH? “I’m…” would have come off better
GMos claw their way back to a winning road record (32-31) … last finish + .500 on road was 2004 (44-36).
I can’t remember who said this (Kat, maybe?) but struggles vs. Pads and Cubs seemed to be over location. No way Kosuke puts a ball into the fucking water at night unless the ball is way into his happy zone. Same for the pitches to Tejada, esp the last one that drove in those two runs after the DP (and Tim handcuffing Pablo on the bunt play to load the bases). Everything was up and toward middle in. The velocity is less a concern than where his pitches are landing, and hopefully none of them land in the OF seats tonight.
As for “lack of support”….I still think Twin had a reasonable argument about Posey C skills, ability to call a game, and defense on errant pitches. He is still learning, imo, having only been on the job full time for what, two months? Lincecum won two Cy Youngs with Molina behind the plate, and right or wrong SF mgmnt (with support from PS) felt pretty strongly Posey needed more seasoning. At the time I didn’t agree with that move at all. I don’t think it’s unfair for him to get some scrutiny when SPs struggle.
I read M-Ball for the first time a few weeks ago. My question is, if Beane is so sold on OBA, then why on his current team are three of the guys with the most amount of ABs so low? Suzuki is at .308, Davis at .305, and Kouzmanoff (whom he traded to get) at .292. Those numbers would be indicative of the type of guys he would get rid of, but they are second third and fourth in ABs for the season. For a guy known for his tirades in his office during the book, do guys who hit like this no longer bother him?
Pennington now has 20 SBs, Davis has 36, and Crisp (in half playing time of others) also has 20. There was a long discussion about Beane’s disdain of the steal during the book, with Wash and Bosley talking about how many bags they stole in the minors, and how” that isn’t done here”. What changed Beane’s mind? Do all these bags swiped really contribute to more runs scored or not?
I think Beane became enamored with the idea of those new fangled defensive stats. He wants to be cutting edge by winning with pitching and D.
There’s no new evidence I know of that demonstrates a certain number of SBs help the offense. It’s the success rate that matters.
Which brings me to Beane going out of his way to acquire Hatteberg, who hit the dramatic HR to extend the streak, based on his offensive stats and high OPS. Beane told the guy he was going to 1B, and didn’t seem to care about his D, despite the fact that he hadn’t played there, and it was up to Washington (who said he was terrible at the start) to work with him.
Hiring Wash as his mgr. (rather than his best man at the wedding) would have been a pretty good cutting edge move for someone so concerned about his defense, too.
That book is old. One of the main points of moneyball was finding am undervalued stat. Back when the book was made, OBP was cheap and helped score runs. Now it isn’t. The league caught up to Beane in terms of SABR stats.
A year ago, looking at this evening’s matchup and we’d have been looking at a classic pitchers’ duel with modest odds on Timmy. Now its different. It’s more a matter of hope than glory. Few of us expect a win tonight. But it is baseball and strange things can happen ~ like a certain slender righthander getting back on track ~ like an improved lineup going after a one-time Cy Young winner ~ like the baseball gods deciding this is the game to bury usually competitive St. Louis for this season.
If it is true that the team has locked Lincecum into a pisstesting regime its high time they rethunk their strategy. Pisstesting is a blatant sign of how far this country has fallen into policestate policies. It is a gross and egregious violation of the most elementary rules of privacy and human rights and has no place in a free country.
Play ball.
great post big flav! couldn’t of said it better myself!! we need Timmy to step up and I’m not buying the spec. that it’s bc bengie is gone…if Timmy can’t pitch w/o his own catcher than the gmen are screwed!!! btw good to see Pablo hitting again, even if his range isn’t looking good on the field!!! the man does need to get in some serious shape this off season…no being nice from the giants big wigs and def no home visits of momma’s cooking unless a giants rep is with him!!! this is giants baseball and we have the team to make the run THIS year!!!
Ray, took a quick glance at your work, very nice. I particularly liked “Aesthetic Harness,” it conjures up the thoughts, images and memories of winter and Christmas.
Madison Bumgarner has delivered on his promise.Sure his 5-4 record does not blow you away, but how many kids come up in the middle of a pennant race and throw quality starts back to back the way that he has? At 21 years old no less? Mot many that’s for sure.Aubrey Huff summed him up pretty good last night: “He’s country redneck, man,He’s got great stuff,he pounds the zone. You’re looking at a kid on the mound….He’s a veteran guy in a 21-year old body.”
Great lede for today’s discussion, Flav. Enjoy Oregon!
A horse named Ishikawa just finished dead last in the opener at Monmouth Park at 65-1. I’m going to take that as a sign and hope Bochy doesn’t start Ishi today. Keep him in the barn, skipper. The reigning two-time NL Cy winner is +135 at the book today. Given his lifetime numbers vs the Cards: 5-0 (1.54), that’s got a 1983 Rodney Dangerfield movie written all over it. I’m expecting a big effort tonight from Timmy. In spite of reading that his avg. fastball is down nearly 3 mph from ’08, and he’s throwing it about 11% less of the time as well. Telling numbers to be sure, but as many here are wont to say, “Fuck the numbers!” Big Time Timmy Jim comes up big tonight and throws a pearl. And to show my support of Timmy tonight, I’m not going to bring up the fact that he looks ridiculous with that hair and is in need of being kidnapped and taken to the nearest barbershop where Johnny Depp as Edward Scissorhands could work his magic.
Don’t listen to Kawakami. He is actually throwing his fastball more now than at the beginning of the year. There is a fangeaphs article about how his off speed pitches are what has actually been hurting him. Kawakami likes to point out stats that work in his favor.
I bet you didn’t know that he’s thrown the same percentage of fastballs this year and last year. Another interesting tidbit to think about is hen his change-up developed. It wasn’t 2008, which explains why he threw so many fastballs in ’07 and ’08.
Or at least early 2008. It came later in the season.
After an anemic May-June-July, at about .230/.300/.330, Pablo is at .281/.324/.500 for August. Not only do we need Timmy, but we need Pablo to continue. I’m inclined to think Pat the Bat will continue his production than Guillen. But if Pablo maintains this pace, we could manage if either faded. Still, the team is predicated on strong starting pitching, so its back on you Timmy, Cainer, and Zito.
It’s all about pitching, more pitching and even more pitching. The lineup will get by.
Tim’s hair is not my worry. Mechanics and health is everything. Oh and some luck too.
Same crew(cut) as yesterday.:
CF Torres
C Posey
1B Huff
LF Burrell
RF Guillen
3B Sandoval
SS Fontenot
2B Sanchez
P Lincecum
BF did you send a copy of that speach to Tim. Well put!!
Runt power did well yesterday in the 7th and 8th spots, getting 4 hits and 3 runs scored.Go Runts!!!!!!!!
You guys all using IPads? Jesus, edit your fucking posts…
I’m going to do a final contest. With this one, you’ll go through me for it. When I work up the details, I’ll post it with my Email address and if you want to enter, you’ll send your picks to me. The prize will be another mini-ITX HTPC.
I’ll post the details later today. Last chance for veterans like Flavor and Chuckles…
If Jenkins won’t edit his, I won’t edit mine!
That’s the fighting spirit!
You know that crap about Wilson getting strike calls he doesnt deserve,is the same tired crap LaRussa’s been pulling for years, trying to intimidate other teams and umpires. His act is worn out at this point.Guess his team’s 5 game losing streak, and 6 after tonight makes him want to whine that much more.
The sad part is that the Cardinals “toothless hillbilly” fan base has fallen for the pathetic charade as well-believing Tony and his team are the only ones to play a game “correctly”.Whatever that means.”Oh look what a genius I am I bat the pitcher 8th” Great Tony…just don’t pass out drunk at a stop sign again when driving home from a game.
Woody is in da house for tonight’s game. If the “human horseshoe” can’t right Timmy’s ship, then he truly is kaput.
Here are the Specs, this one includes everything. The contest is simple: pick their regular season record. So you get a mulligan from your preseason pick. Tie breaker: total runs scored FOR THE YEAR. Everyone, including past winners, is eligible. Email: twinfan1@hotmail.com with your pick. If you win, you will have to include a shipping address. I don’t give a shit if it’s yours or not. When signed for, it’s yours, or whoevers. Flavor and Chuck: I want one of you to win so give it your best. Or in Chuck’s case, maybe have one of the kids do it 😉 :

That’s very generous of you, TF. When’s the deadline? October 3, at 1:00 would help my chances. 😉
Ah the memories. Thanks Feliz
Stopped by a mainstream sports equipment store tonight to get some back-to-school staples — never-flat basketball, new pair of skate shoes, new cleats — and took a look at the Giants jerseys on sale. The fmv for Sandoval seems to be holding its own at $100, but the Rowand jerseys were marked down to $50. And man were there a lot of them on the rack.
Fucking Randy Winn gets the Cards first hit. Shit.
$50 for a Rowand jersey? Does that include Aaron mowing your lawn, washing the car and cleaning out the garage?
what?
I show one post between 3:23 and 4:50??
That wasn’t very nice of Winn. Sumbitch, we lose this shit 1-0 on a Randy Winn HR is just ain’t your year.
if Winn his a dinger off the freak and no one is there to blog it…..
thanks, Dennis, now it counts 😛
What’s the deal with Timmy not being on deck when it’s his turn. He’s NEVER in the circle, always the dugout..
If I was blue, I’d enforce that shit.
We have a Geddy Lee sighting! The Red Barchetta himself is in the house.
I had to laugh when Wynn took one out. Almost as funnyas when FredLew dropped a routine fly against us.
Did I miss the ball and chain shackled to Torres’s foot? Why the hell wasn’t he running? Tight ballgame; 2 outs; etc., etc., etc., …No goddamn excuse for that. He’s gots to go.
Damn
Damm Burrell’ D sure cost us there. But Tim’s not helping his cause with bad location.
Where’s Geddy?!
He’s in the seats behind home plate. The Cards announcers pointed him out.
Double damn
Fucking the Bat boot that one but good. Even worse was Kruk giving him a pass calling it a “ske-ball” down there in LF. Come again? Ske-ball? This isn’t fucking Chucky Cheese. Stoopid shit was excusing his play in LF. Vet-sucking homer. Looking like four straight for CY. Think maybe now he’ll just consider cutting the hair. “Cause this shit ain’t working. Time for a change.
The Burrell error didn’t impact the score at all. Sorry, boys, it’s on the Timmer…
Torres didn’t go because runners are 2 for 9 against Carpenter/Molina..
Next questions.
I don’t give a shit if they were 0 fer 9. That situation called for a stolen base attempt.
Make something happen. No, we stood there like a lump of coal.
Buster grounded out, Fuckles.. inning over.
Dennis…Take Timmy to Woody’s “Shed” for that haircut.A Shed cut would sure be scary, especially with Scissorhands working the scissors. What happens in the Shed stays in the Shed.
Face the possibility that what we’re now seeing is a real *good* outing from the Timster.
That’s some doomed worst case scenario shit.
Another terrible throw from the BusterMeister and an awful play from Fruckie…
The throw was awry, but Fruckie HAS to catch that.
*good* is scary. Sloppy fucking baseball from Posey and Sanchez
Nice swipe tag there by the little guy. One small omission: YOU FORGOT TO CATCH THE BALL.
EOE smoking of pole tonight, with Cy at the head table.
Right now Lincecum is just an ordinary pitcher. Whatever magic there was is gone. The question is, is it permanent?
Twin, when you get a chance – check your email . . . thanks.
Jesus, somebody give our “#2 starter” a call and see if he’ll come back. Our “#1 starter” is utter horseshit.
One shovel won’t suffice for this mess. Call John Deere and order a Backhoe. He blows.
Just saw it, Blade. Thanks. I’ll get back to you later on the details…
OK . . . thanks
The sky is falling!!
Did you not hear me ?!?! The sky is FALLLIIINNNNGGGG
Burrell should hope it lands in LF. Now way it hits him.
Well it’s falling on Lincecum. He’s through. They might as well tear up his contract and let him walk because he is worthless.
(extreme sarcasm)
Milwaukee back up and Philly losing. If all stays as is, no harm no foul.
Strasburg left with some kind of injury leading 5-1 in the 5th. Let’s hope that Nats bullpen can hold on.
Twin your right about LaRussa working for a call the next game.Cause no way was that strike 3 to Burrell.
Outing by Affeldt was encouraging. Cardinals had to put in their best reliever there in the 8th, but he did the job after Giants scored one. Timmy wasn’t horrid tonight. He was actually good through three. But then he started sliding. Team outlook without Lincecum reverting to form, or at least close to it, is not good.
Note where the Redbirds switched starters for tomorrow, placing their hot rookie in the role that was previously expected to go to Kyle Lohse. If Milwaukee and Washington do their jobs tonight, the loss we had anticipated won’t totally bite us in the ass.
For whatever reason, my feet quit hurting almost all day, now it started up again. real bizarre…brutal…
I guess Phillips was right, what a bunch of whiny bitches. I’m surprised Carpenter doesn’t get buzzed every game..
So, with that, nighty nite.
When you get beat by Winn and Feliz it’s definitely not your night. No way these two should have even sniffed a hit.
Well said!
It’s time to look at Tim’s concentration level. You can’t throw shit like the pitch to Winn. Similar to the Padre game where he dominated Gonzales but seemed to let down against some others.
Mota for the past few weeks just keeps going from worse to badder. No way i wanna see him next season, or, god forbid, in the post-season. He was okay early on, but has reverted to form a bunch for weeks on end.
I have to admit, I did something I almost never do – I turned off the game really early. But, once Posey threw the ball into center field, I knew it just wasn’t going to happen for the guys tonight.
Oh well, there’s always tomorrow. Go Giants!!!
I knew it was over when the indomitable Pedro Julio Feliz came through.
Axford put the Pads down 1-2-3, K’ing Gonzales and Ludwick. Brewers win. It’s still 5. The experts at Chron Live said G’s would be 9 back by tomorrow.
Yeah, amazing the Padres fail to mount a comeback in the ninth.
Parra for the sweeeeep?
I sent you an Email, Blade.
“Face the possibility that what we’re now seeing is a real *good* outing from the Timster.”
Obviously that’s what the cards we can see say. Still cards to turn over.
Been out all day. Pads lost, right? So no harm, no foul.
twin/michael, glad to read you my friend.
Goodnight gentlemen (?)
Ya gotta love it!
Yankees r 2 games up on SD (3 in the win column)
Yankee payroll is 3x the Pad’s payroll (or there a bouts)
so while we have garlic fries, NYY fans have ticket prices that are paying off a $54M per game debt and the season is not over. Go Devil Rays!
Wish I could C a big turn around (this season not counting playoffs, which Tim would get on top of all the way) but I am much more positive about the team fighting for victories. Tim got us here: thinking we are a team that can win, and everyone else will do to get the team there and give us a reason to celebrate and swagger during the off season.
Go Giants!
