A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Game 3 Gut Check Time

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 19, 2010

I’m quite bummed this morning. Not only have I been receiving daily texts or calls from friends celebrating the tickets they got for today’s game, but I have to endure the indignity of not even being able to watch the game. I’ll have it on the radio in my office but it won’t be the same and I have so many things to do today I might not even get to HEAR most of it. And I can’t dvr it because too many people would end up blowing it for me with texts like “OMG!” “PANDA!” “Fucking umpire!”….Oh well, you guys will just have to will this game home for me. That’s what I really think is going to happen. Matt Cain WILL *will* this game home for us today. 2-0, 3-1, something like that. Ok, just get him1 run. At least.

I’m loosely confident that our offense will get back on track at ATT. Actually, that’s not true, it’s fake confidence. This must be how Zito feels every time he throws a pitch……

So go get ’em Cainer. I couldn’t have more faith in you. And at the end of the day, faith in yourself and those who believe equally in you is all that matters. It’s just a game, don’t forget that guys. Sometimes there are more important things in life to consider….2 flaps up from Flapper Nation……

Flav, I’ve been going to games since 1967. Been very close, but no batted balls. My son got a BP ball a couple years ago. The most cherished one I almost got was during an old-timers game around ’83, and McCovey hit a foul pop that I was camped under for 10 minutes. RF lower res. It nicked the upper deck railing, and ricocheted onto the field. One inch to the right, and I would have caught it.

That would have been awesome . . .

    Let’s go Loogy!!!

One sweet, clean inning outta Lopez. What a fine pickup. Keep the drama down, Wilson. We really have had quite a bit of that this season.

    Grab some pine, Werth!

Cody Ross got his “Bryce Harper” look goin’. For this team, this situation, I can dig it…

  31. stixwiz said, on October 19, 2010 at 4:04 pm

GDP by the other guys. Nice way to end their misery, Blackbeard! I’d happily give odds at this point that the chances of the Fillies renewing Ibanez’ contract are about at the same level that Guillen is with the Gigantes in April.

  32. Bozo said, on October 19, 2010 at 4:04 pm

2 more from these guys and four from the those next guys.
Hell of a game Matt. way to come up Clown and Puff.

    Go Bum. Go Giants.

  33. delmardennis said, on October 19, 2010 at 4:13 pm

Damn, this feels good right now.

  34. snarkk said, on October 19, 2010 at 4:16 pm

Matt toughed it out, didn’t have his best stuff, still got the 7 innings shutout. Very gutty. Nice 1-2-3 8th by Gomez, and Wilson 9th was solid. Good 9th D in right by Nate keeping Rollins at first, kept the DP in order, and that’s what happened. Alright, hitch up the pants and go get ’em tomorrow…

  35. snarkk said, on October 19, 2010 at 4:17 pm

    POTG: Cain
POTG2: Cody. Dude knocks in the first run to break the ice. Huge…

  36. 3bagger said, on October 19, 2010 at 4:19 pm

OK, so my couple innings at Hooters turned into the whole game (gotta love those wings). In the immortal words of Timmy, “FUCK YEAH!!!”

    Don’t Stop Believing!!!

  38. Michael said, on October 19, 2010 at 4:26 pm

If I’m Unca Goober, I go with Halladay. I think we’ll scald Blanton.

  39. 3bagger said, on October 19, 2010 at 4:30 pm

I agree Twin. That would be fine with me. I’d take Bum over just about anyone right now, especially on short rest and that would put Timmy against Oswalt, and we know how that story has gone this year.

  40. Giant Head said, on October 19, 2010 at 4:30 pm

Burrell had that huge BB as well that set up Ross and Huff.

Posey continues to struggle but I can see Huff back there in 3 against Blanton. Maybe Posey hitting 6th. Keep Ross 5th…

  41. snarkk said, on October 19, 2010 at 4:35 pm

And, Rohand got a double today. Wow…

  42. snarkk said, on October 19, 2010 at 4:51 pm

I don’t have the stats, but I don’t think I’ve seen Cain throw more ground ball outs in any other game, ever. He had the Phills off kilter, definitely. And good D all around by the squad, especially Franchez, he fielded a lot of chances with no mistakes…

  43. 3bagger said, on October 19, 2010 at 4:55 pm

I just read the box score. How was the grounder by Sanchez off Utley scored a hit? No way.

    • TedSpe said, on October 19, 2010 at 4:56 pm

Yeah, I noticed that earlier as well. Granted, I didn’t *see* the play, I just noticed they changed it. But whatever, hooty fucking hoo

    • snarkk said, on October 19, 2010 at 5:01 pm

I would give him a hit. That ball had a wicked spin on it, and a bad hop resulted…

  44. Michael said, on October 19, 2010 at 4:58 pm

The Evil Two both contributed. Again, Bonehead has been gold this postseason.

    • TedSpe said, on October 19, 2010 at 5:00 pm

Yoiu know what that means. Posey sits tomorrow and Sandoval’s the starting cather

  45. San Dog said, on October 19, 2010 at 5:02 pm

This was huge to come back to SF and hold serve. Super happy for Cain who has been a solid guy from the time he first came up. Had to be a great thrill for him to pitch so well and lead the team to this victory after all he’s been through with the Giants.

  46. snarkk said, on October 19, 2010 at 5:04 pm

I’m having a bit of fun reading a couple of Phillies blogs. Either they say (1) the Phills are hitting like crap and Manuel should change out the lineup, or (2) the Giants pitchers aren’t that good at all, it’s just idiotic hitting by the Phills. I love it….

  47. snarkk said, on October 19, 2010 at 5:12 pm

Manuel confirms it’s Blanton tomorrow. One game at a time…

    • 3bagger said, on October 19, 2010 at 5:16 pm

I had the Giants losing today and winning the next two. With Blanton going for sure now, I’m feeling that much more confident. I had the Giants in 6, but it could now be 5.

  48. TedSpe said, on October 19, 2010 at 5:18 pm

Phillies getting beat by stud pitching, bench warmers and a rodeo clown (no offense, Bozo).
You know, it never dawned on me until now what an unimaginative name for a baseball team that is

  49. stixwiz said, on October 19, 2010 at 5:43 pm

R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Giants are getting it now, gang. Cainer’s performance today established him among baseball’s elite pitchers. Sure, WE knew how good he can be, but he’d largely flown under the radar as for national attention.

There was talk around the blogosphere about the Phillies becoming a Dynasty, what with their three dominant starters and a bunch of solid hitters. But maybe we are looking at a changing of the guard instead. Consider: Giants only had a few hits again today (guys in red had half as many) but they were efficiently bunched and brought in sufficient support for Matt the Horse to cruise.

Next season should see the emergence of Brandon Belt, likely at 1B but maybe in the O.F. Ideal pickup for the team offseason would be a speedster shortstop who’s also a defensive whiz. That not happening, imagine Neukom & Co. springing for the likes of Carl Crawford. We know one thing for certain. The pitching is THERE. Four Aces in hand looks like a rotation-based baseball dynasty. An upgrade in team speed and OBP and this bunch could dominate for years.

Beast from the East is getting nervous again. One thing about Joe Blanton is that he is most partial to giving up the Big Fly. Fair bit of a gopher baller. Giants can play that game. Tomorrow might be a good time to see if Pablo has found enough sweet bamboo shoots to re-emerge as Kung Fu Panda. Of course, he’s hardly the only longball threat in this bunch, just ups the ante a bit.

So Ol’ Charlie has him a bit of a dilemma: Chance Blanton against Bumgarner and look at a better than 50-50 shot of being down 3-1 away from the Bandbox ~ or trot out the hired gunslinger on short rest and hope there’s enough in his tank to outduel a 21 Y.O. Tarheel.

Things is gettin interesting. Say Manuel opts for Halladay and he loses by maybe 4-3. That leaves him with an Oswalt-Lincecum potential sudden-death situation. I’m sure the entire Phillies braintrust will be in on this decision. Either way it could backfire. I love it.

I called it in 5 and I’m stickin’ to it.

Stix: what’s going on with your PC? I also want an update from Kevin and John.

  52. TedSpe said, on October 19, 2010 at 5:50 pm

I didn’t call how long this would go but in full disclosure, the numbers I sent Michael were based on 6 games. Of course, my numbers are shot all to hell at this point

  53. Unca Chuck said, on October 19, 2010 at 6:02 pm

Yeah, I didn’t think Uncle Charlie would go with Halladay tomorrow. Mainly because it pushes everyone else up a day. And, if Halladay loses, then he’s got to face Timmy, Drrry, and Cain. All on normal rest. All closing out the series . . .

Yeah, I had it in 5 as well . . . one on the road, three at home.

    Go Madisoy!!!

  54. Unca Chuck said, on October 19, 2010 at 6:03 pm

You can leave Cody up there, Flav. He’s Co-POTG with Matty . . .

Charlie Manuel is the best interview of the post season. Master of the understated, he continues to defy reporters who can’t come up with a tougher questions than, “Um, er, eh, Charlie, what do you think you need to do to win today?” Charlie: “Heh, heh, heh, score more runs!”
