My top 10 Sports Moments of 2010
As I said last week, I think lists are dumb but when I thought back over 2010 and what it meant to me (from a sports moment stand point), this year was just unreal for me and one I’ll never forget for more than just winning the World Series. I don’t know if this is all that correct but they are the first 10 that came to mind when I started thinking about it…..
1) OUR, San Francisco Giants
2) Paly winning the State Championships
3) attending Game 1 of the World Series
4) Chris Cohan selling the Warriors
5) Stanford kicking the be-jezzus out of Cal in the Big Game
6) Watching Ryan Howard sitting there helplessly as B-wheezy bent in the most perfect pitch I’ve ever seen into Posey’s mit to send us to the World Series
7) attending the 7/31 “Burrell Bomb” game –I have never been in a louder stadium than in the 8th when he hit that go ahead 2 run bomb.
8) Mike Singletary getting fired
9) attending Posey’s first game of the year with SAN DIGGITY DAWG who had the foresight to buy the tix 2 months in advance to that game and invite ME to go along with him. Thanks dude.
10) Stanford girls taking down UCONN
there are like 5000 fans at whatever the hell the “ticketcity” bowl is. How does this bowl make it to Jan 1st?

So the Flap moving to wordpress is number 11?
I’m not super happy with wordpress. It’s allowed me to keep the trolls out, that’s about it. I had actually sold ad space prior to coming here (it was all tasteful and appropriate) but found out afterwards that wordpress wouldn’t allow me to put my own ads up, only theirs. I can move it again I just haven’t found the time. And it would be a relatively easy move, I’d keep the blog here but host it somewhere else. That would allow me to make the changes that wordpress won’t let me make (like letting you guys edit your own comments).
Anyway, glad we did the move but I’m moving it again at some point before the season starts…..
Interesting. A buddy of mine uses wordpress and is not very impressed either. Agree with Ted though that keeping the trolls out is a good enough reason. I haven’t noticed many so it must be working. Do you get a lot of troll traffic that we just don’t know about?
Bluehost.com in Utah (although I like Hurricane in Fremont, too)
cheap, secure, full featured; I haven’t had a problem in 7 years.
Having said that they do charge extra for full spam protection on your email accounts.but if you know how you are allowed to install your own, it is your server. WordPress comes free as does database storage, picture galleries blah, blah.
It’s allowed me to keep the trolls out,

Happy New Year to all.
OK, football again: WTF are they starting Alex? It’s fishy. If he does not have a good game, it could be ugly, he doesn’t deserve that. And if he plays well, so what? It could benefit him but I doubt they’re starting him to help his 2011 contract elsewhere. This is a game that they could tank LEGITIMATELY by starting Troy or Carr . Of course, if Billick gets the HC job, Alex may be baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaak”
Alex won’t be back even if Jed hires Alex’ mother as HC…
Your response is not welcome. He will be back if Billick is hired, Gruden also likes him. The caveat is that Alex may turn them down, he’ll be an attractive FA, he’s an instant upgrade for several teams.
really interested in thos TCU/Wisc Rose Bowl. I took TCU just to keep it interesting….
As I said, it’s fishy. There really is zero reason for him to start unless:
1. Troy and Carr won’t be back either OR
2. They *are* considering bringing him back
or they know that whatever coach they ultimately bring in wants to bring in his own guy so it doesn’t matter who starts Sun since all three will be gone— that’s the reason I don’t think they get Harbaugh or Gruden–those guys want to work with QB stud and there’s no way you can guarantee that through the draft unless you have the first pick. Billick probably doesn’t care as much…….
but of the three QB’s I think the only one who has the slightest chance of coming back is Alex Smith. The other two are not viable starting NLF qb’s
Obviously the problem in bringing Alex back is fan uproar.
Duh. And that he’s at best a backup…
He’ll have offers where he could start or at least a guarantee to compete. He’ d refuse the Niners if they don’t consider him the starter. He’s regrded much better around the league than you think . He could start for AZ, Seattle, Minnesota, Redskins, Miami, maybe a couple more.
We’ll see next season…
Far more important: how does Mussberger still have a job?
Big 10 was 0-5 in bowl games today. Average loss by 25 points. TCU over Wisconsin in the Rose. Awesome. Big 10 is and has been so overrated for years by the East Coast bias. It stinks as a conference. I think the Mountain West would handle the Big 10, and Pac 10 teams would destroy Big 10 teams in a season of head to head contests…
Big 10 is bad, but it’s not NFC West bad. Seattle could very well host a playoff game and they wouldn’t even be bowl eligible in the Big 10.
Back to baseball . . . Approximately 10 of us flappers selected Baltimore as LaRoche’s destination. Wrongo! Not likely with Derek Lee just inking an $8 million one-year deal ($10 million with incentives) with the Orioles. Odds are long for me (and anyone else who selected LaRoche) to win the PC. Oh well . . .
killjoy
if you blow up the picture super big you could see me, fairly drunk, in the bleachers at Dravecky’s game.
Yup. Sans beard
obviously you’d need better technology than just your computer +/- button 🙂
I have not checked for ties in the contest. Somebody want to do that for me? I’d appreciate it. Several inches of snow Friday night- not like usual-real snow, snapping tree branches, snowball fights, good stuff..
Uhm…my printer’s not working.
FUCK!!
Foiled again
that could be a good job for ED and his spreadsheet 🙂
Ted, this could be all you, too, right?
Absolutely!!
I need to realize which “reply” to click on
Always knew there was a reason I loved the “Shooter”.
On this day in 2002,the Cubs signed Rod Beck who was coming off Tommy John surgery at the time.He made national headlines by welcoming fans to his mobile home in Iowa for autographs and free beer!
kat, I remember reading the SI article about that. Beck was quite a down to earth character . . . RIP and God bless his family.

Okay. That last part I made up
I was at that game too. sitting down the first base line as part of the 25 game package. what a great trade though: dravecky, lefferts and mitchell for grant, davis and brown. I liked mark davis but i don’t remember that he amounted to much.
the dravecky game is like the Haliki no-no— everyone here says they were at that game. For some reason, I believe all you people. 🙂
if it helps, i don’t think I was at ed’s coming out. It is interesting though, trying to be sure that, yes, I was at whatever game and not doing the forced memory thing. I was always pretty sure i was at the Big Game with the return but until i found the ticket stub recently, i was never positive. that being said, i’m pretty positive, no ticket stub, that i was at dave’s comeback with Lisa and bosmo and breymo (yes, we like our o’s).
even for the 1951 Bobby Thomson HR, it was 30,000+ out of a possible 55,000 or so, yet 6.5 million claim they were there
BUT your guy was there! the guy who was a great WS omen!!
I wasn’t at the Haliki game but I was at the Dravecky game in 89. I never was a fan of his because of the whole John Birch thing, but for pitching, I’ve gotta give the guy props.
I was also at the 3rd game of the 89 series (me and 10 million, I think.), got the ticket (the bastards clipped it when the series resumed) and the Ballpark edition Examiner from the Stick that day.
I forgot about the birch thing. but yes, the guy could pitch. and great trade. and if that fucking retard muldonado makes ONE of two plays, the st. louis bitches go down. (i’m not still upset or anything).
I did a quick count up. The sheet is still available
HERE
a) It looks like Vlad could be the decider as everyone had him staying with Texas except SanDog who chose the oakland As
b) Working backwards from there 14 of us preferred the Angels for AndreB; w/ Blade picking the Rangers and I opted for the As.
c) Cabrera had 7 votes for the Twin Cities:
Chuckles, Craig, DeCap & Dennis: the Reds. Irish went with the As; Zumie chooses Angels; Blade selected da Pads & Max saw him in Baltimore. SportsDude gets a bye
d) 11(eleven) Flappers said LaRoche lands in Baltimore;
Zumie and I were seeing Angels; Chuck and Ted took the Nats; SportDude opted Padres.
e) Renteria: 8 said Giants; 6 have him not returning; 3 see him in sunny FLA with the fishes.
disclaimer: I will let you figure the what ifs whilst I awaits a signing or two.
addendum
Things are extreamly quiet during the holidays so I pulled these from MLBTR 30 Dec:
Adrian Beltre – The Angels, A’s and Rangers have been linked to Beltre, but it sounds like the A’s are no longer bidding for the Scott Boras client.
Vladimir Guerrero – Like Thome, Vlad could be a fit for the Orioles, Rays or Blue Jays. He’s had continued dialogue with the Rangers about a return to Texas.
Adam LaRoche – The Orioles and Nationals appear to be the strongest suitors for LaRoche.
And some old news:
Renteria (covering all bases):
1 – would prefer to return to the Giants, he told Claudia Aguilar Ramirez of El Tiempo.
2 – Renteria told reporters in his hometown of Barranquilla, Colombia yesterday that he would like to retire playing either for the Cardinals or the Marlins
3 – Backup shortstops. Some names The Giants floated around include Orlando Cabrera and Tigers’ utilityman Ramon Santiago. Edgar Renteria remains an option as well.
Orlando Cabrera – Money may be the only thing that prevents Minnesota from re-signing , since the Twins “appreciated” his contribution to their AL Central crown.
Beltre to rangers
Ed, how do you do that whole HERE thing, in bold letters, where you can link to something. I like that. Teach me your ways, oh english-san….
some html tags are OK for us regular users, probably more for the editors.
you put the tags in the post and they show up as they do:
you use the ‘code’ tag when you want to show code so it is visible like:

did you see my post about bluehost?
By The Machine?
The dude is everywhere
Haven’t been posting here in a while, just reading comments. All the Alex talk and HC for the niners. So here goes, Gruden just another motivator IMO, Billick Defensive minded coach, if the Niners hire a mother DC as head Coach I think a lot of fans will be very disappointed. I would hope that the niners look for a young offensive minded coach that understands this is a passing orientated league. Don’t know who that would be but that is who they should look for.
Oops should proof read suppose to be another not mother DC
I didn’t see this live, but watched the tape of ESPN’s Hannah Storm and Adam Schefter giving high fives/celebrating Eric Mangini’s firing . . . Totally inappropriate for “so-called” journalists to act unprofessionally. Ms. Storm did have enough sense to apologize almost immediately, recognizing what she had just did . . . Schefter tried to chime in too, but his apology was insincere (crocodile tears), only following Storm’s lead.
I wonder if they would laugh and celebrate, if they knew how many other coaches and families are affected because of Mangini’s firing?
Good point Blade…There’s no need in professional journalism for that kind of conduct.Boy the pressures of being a HC is tough enough, and when you consider they also in most cases hold the future of their own coaching staff in their hands when they fail, makes the job even harder for them and all the families and coaches involved.
Hannah Storm: ain’t she the one who got Tony Kornheiser suspended because he noted how provocatively she dressed when she in fact did so?
I sure would like to see Lombardi/Harbaugh over Ballke/Harbaugh.They have a good working relationship with there time with the Raiders.Asked about Ballke,Harbaugh just said heard the name that’s about it.(not a ringing endorsement if your trying to land Harbaugh)Jed don’t screw this up and set the team back another 5 years.Lombardi would also have the balls to pull off a trade forAndrew Luck, probably 2 1st a 2nd and a player.Whatever it takes, they need a top notch QB to revamp the program.Jaws describes Luck as Matt Ryan clone in the makings, and look how fast he helped turn the Falcons around along with the right GM and head coach hires, to possible Super Bowl team this year.
Until they get a QB that produces, I don’t give a damn. GM or HC are just men that need jobs. In the end we’re stuck with a JED YORK decision. Can’t wait!
It would have been nice to see Stanford in the Rose Bowl for the sake of history and tradition. But I will say- the silver lining about the Orange Bowl is that it’s a prime time game tonight, and the only football game on. It will have some national focus. The Rose Bowl is kind of buried amidst all the other bowl games on New Years day, these days, with all the many bowl games.
Stanford never looked better.
Lombardi talked on the phone w/Jed, then wrote online he wasn’t getting the job becuz Baalke was a done deal. If Lombardi becomes GM, that would make him look like a loser trying to scare away GM talent from interviewing in a sham process. Plus Jed would look even more like a doofus and fibber, if that is possible, for letting Harbaugh dictate the GM hire over Jed’s in-bred choice. With all these reports, I don’t think anybody knows what’s going on, probably Jed included…
That’s hard to follow. I need Soap Opera Digest.
AND, Flemm said on KNBR today he thought it very ikely Harbaugh leaves, and likely that Luck will stay in school, even if Harbaugh leaves. Meanwhile, I’m wondering if Panda has lost any more LBs…
Hey it’s the Yorks, what can you expect?
I think Stanford can pull this off tonight, but it’s funny — so far they’ve succeeded more by brawn than brains. And geez that VT QB is a pain in the ass. Shades of Vince Young in the BSC championship game some years ago.
Not necessarily a better “scrapbook” summary than Snarkk’s or anyone else’s here, but still fun to read:

Very weird what MLB does on the 2010 World Series DVD intro (the single-disc set). For openers, there’s a short clip about the “numbers” in baseball — it’s a promo for some other DVD — and they have everything: Cobb, Rose [yes, Pete Rose], Gagne, Hershiser, Rickey Henderson, Babe Ruth, Ripken, Suzuki, EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE, except one Barry Lamar Bonds. He is conspicuously absent. Nada. Doesn’t exist. Nor McGwire either. Pretty phony. And pretty selective.
I was just thinking about weird games that I had been to.
There was this game at the Stick against Atlanta. It was a photo ball give away game (the balls were given to kids but I guess the dads got a hold of them). Somebody douched Dion Sanders with a beer (he was still with the Braves) but he cooled out the left field stands by autographing some kids stuff (during the game). We went down by five runs and all these balls started coming from the stands (I don’t remember why). The game was stopped and the Giants were warned about a forfeit. I think the Giants came back two or three times from five run deficits and ending up winning the game. But man, those balls raining out of the stands that was just amazing to see. No matter how fucked up it was.
Up there with disco demolition night . . .
Went to a Giants painter hat giants promo. The logo looked like little hot dogs. Ugliest fucking hat in history. I was at that photo ball promo game as well. AND the Dravecky one. Really.
Yeah, my fave with the twi-night double header vs LA that featured a riot at the end of the 2nd game courtesy of Pedro Guerrero and Mike Marshall. The Giants lost both games, but Lasorda was nearly beaned by a 90 MPH orange from the stands, and Mike Marshall got punched in the face 2x trying to climb into the stands. Krukow beating Fernando 1-0 as the fog obliterated all views of the outifelders from the upper deck home plate seats was a close 2nd for great SF/LA games I’ve seen.
someone, i want to say mark davis, but not sure now, was pitching a no-no into the ninth. 1-0 Giants. i’m in the left field bleachers, just inside the line. someone walks and guerrero jacks one into the upper deck in right. I see, i don’t know, at least 10 fights spontaneously break out all around the upper deck and even in the field seats. that was the stick i remember.
Yeah, I’m wondering the same thing on my blog, Snarkk. My thought is Lombardi may be trying to jack up his hiring price.
The fact nothing has been announced leads me to think there might be back room dealings going on.
Snodfart is spanking the shit out of VT.
No Sosa either?
Stanford Cardinal. Just a bunch of wussies……..
They’re happy wussies tonight.
You fooled me on that one —I had to go quickly check the score. Nice run The Cardinal is on these days.
Very flattered our day at the ballpark made in into your Top 10 Flav. That was a great time and I look forward to doing it again next year.
Along with the obvious bliss of the SFG finally winning it all, other big sports moments for me this year included my alma mater, The San Diego State University, winning its first bowl game since 1969 and our hoops team in the top freaking 10 with arguably the best current program on the west coast. All three of the above have been long-time dreams and absolutely blow my mind.
Had a great golfing get together with a dozen of my old SDSU buddies in San Clemente the other day. Several are big Dogger fans, and it was my first face to face meeting with them since it all went down. The scene set up perfectly as they were all gathered in the parking lot as I pulled in. I emerged from my car and strolled toward them with a smirk on my face. As I got closer, I raised my arms in triumph just as they noticed the “SF World Series Champions” lapel pin on my black fleece. The pin was a Christmas present from my son who attends SFSU. Understated, but powerful as hell. Basking baby, basking.
VA Tech is way overrated, even at 13 or whatever they are. ACC is a horrible conference. This BCS regime has got to go. But, g.Good for Stanfoo. Nothing else for Harbaugh to prove. He gone. But, where?…
Snarkk not impressed? What else is new?
Harbaugh has to tone down that drama queen shit on the sideline before the 49ers kick off next season. Terrible look. Helluva good smart ass coach, however.
Looks like the Dolphins are interested in Harbaugh as well:
