A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Renteria to the Reds

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on January 7, 2011

I didn’t see the details of the contract, just that his one year deal COULD be worth 3 million with incentives. He never would’ve gotten that here since it’s tough to reach incentives when you are a back up. I think Cinn is a great fit for Rent– he’ll look good in that uni, will love Bake and that ballpark has been known to pump up stats into a batters line.

That whole “disrespect” thing is dead and buried. When he comes up for his first at bat at ATT in 2011 he will receive a standing ovation. And it should be a long one………

Flav, I agree completely on your take on Rent. Best of luck to him.

I’m sucking so bad on the contest, I’m kind of hoping I completely strike out on my picks. Vlad, go ahead and pick Cleveland. O-Cab, you might as well pick KC or someplace I would have never guessed.

I’m just catching up here, so I apologize in advance for bringing up the steroid thing again. When it comes to PEDs I just have three questions for the sports writers:
    1) Why didn’t anyone question Cal Ripken before voting him into the hall? The writers seemed hell-bent on just the guys that beefed up. Players were also using roids to heal quicker and provide more energy (especially guys on the decline). I would think someone would question a guy whose record was based on going out there everyday.
    2) The Mitchell report. I know it was based only on a few sources (that’s wild in itself) so I guess that could explain why there wasn’t any major Red Sox or Brewers mentioned (I guess). But as director of the Red Sox how in the fuck didn’t Mitchell know about the team hiring a doctor to show the team how to use them?
    3) Lastly, Selig testified before Congress about when he knew about steroids, yet some ex trainers testified that they provided MLB with information before then. Why wasn’t that investigated?
So, sports writers, before black balling any players from the HOF, answer these questions for me.
OK, I’m off the soap box. Sorry guys.

As a fan, I’ll always be grateful for Rent. coming through in the post season when it counted the most.

  3. Unca Chuck said, on January 7, 2011 at 8:34 am

I don’t even remember who I picked to go where. I know I got Rent wrong.

  4. Unca Chuck said, on January 7, 2011 at 8:38 am

As far as the roid thing goes, no one wants to reopen the wound. Especially Bud and the owners. They are happy to point at the players, blame it all on them, and happily say the game is now fixed.

My fear is that a lot of the roided players will die prematurely. I guess they should be thankful the teams had doctors on staff to show them how to take steroids the correct way. If you believe the guys in the 70s who were doing them, they would take 4-8x what they should have been taking. They were taking doses prescribed for horses.

    • Bozo said, on January 7, 2011 at 8:44 am

      They shoot horses don’t they?

      • Unca Chuck said, on January 7, 2011 at 9:16 am

        Ken Caminiti was a horse . . . hyuk

The point being is, the players are the ones taking the fall (literally and figuratively) while the rest of baseball (owners, trainers, agents, commish) either turned a blind eye to, or actively coached these guys on, how to avoid detection. Yeah, they got their paydays. Some of them anyway, but as these guys have health problems into their 40s and 50s and beyond, all we’ll get from the hypocritesthat played a huge part in it (hello Bud and Sandy) is, “Tut tut. Those poor foolish fellows. Why did they go to such drastic means? WE certainly didn’t know anything.”

  5. Unca Chuck said, on January 7, 2011 at 8:40 am

Rent? Hey, good luck, pal. He’s back to being Carpeteria. He should be fine playing under Dusty. He’ll get a lot of pinch hit dingers in Cincy.

  6. twinfan said, on January 7, 2011 at 8:51 am

He’s done more for San Francisco than Harbaugh 😉
I’m glad he got a better deal and he’ll love playing for Dusty…

That’s exactly what will happen. For all the shit you read on the Splash and other places, internet trolls don’t actually attend games

  8. snarkk said, on January 7, 2011 at 10:16 am

I’ll cheer for Rent when (if he’s not on the DL) he takes his first AB as a Red at ATT. Thanks for the WS winning HR. Then, I’ll cheer again when he hits a weak pop out to short and can’t move quick enough to pick Rowand’s inevitable 5 hopper in the hole …

  9. TedSpe said, on January 7, 2011 at 10:36 am

One thing I’ve missed abour Rent’s signing. Was he signed as the Reds starting SS? Or utility? Or what exactly?

  10. Flavor said, on January 7, 2011 at 11:10 am

He’s going to be their starting SS, I think. He wouldn’t agree to an incentive laden contract if he wasn’t getting at least an initial chance to start. Over/under on number of games he plays next year? 77…..

    • snarkk said, on January 7, 2011 at 11:11 am

      Go with the under…

    • TedSpe said, on January 7, 2011 at 11:40 am

That’s logical, of course. I guess I’m just so used to seeing him on the bench, I forget that he’s still relatively young.

  11. twinfan said, on January 7, 2011 at 12:05 pm

So far only GHead got LaRoche, and only Dirt got Beltran. No one got Rent. So I guss that leaves Vlad and Cabrera.

  12. Unca Chuck said, on January 7, 2011 at 12:50 pm

Jim Harbaugh is the new Niner head coach . . .

  13. blade3colorado said, on January 7, 2011 at 1:03 pm

Yeah, I just got the news too Chuck. Personally, I think it’s a big mistake . . . Harbaugh is a GREAT college coach . . . I just don’t think it will translate to the NFL. Also, he better lower the “histrionics” and “Rah, Rah” schtick . . . that works in high school and college, never in the Not For Long.

  14. Flavor said, on January 7, 2011 at 1:18 pm

blade– I tentatively agree with you. But whatever, I’m on board, let’s see what happens…..

  15. Giant Head said, on January 7, 2011 at 1:19 pm

Hooray on Harbaugh! I changed by Beltre pick from Rangers to Angels….screwed myslef!

  16. Unca Chuck said, on January 7, 2011 at 1:57 pm

Frankly, after the last 2 coaching failures, I don’t see how anyone could be any worse. Regardless of the bucketloads of scratch that harbaugh is getting.

The things that Harbaugh did at both stops in his college career was to elevate teams that didn’t have a ton of talent into cohesive teams that played smart and error free football.

I just hope he takes his DC Fangio with him. I LOVED their aggressive defensive strategy. They got burned at times, but they never backed off the pressure. Higher risk, but much higher rewards than the milquetoast shit the niners have run under Nolantaryski.

  17. swickman said, on January 7, 2011 at 2:59 pm

Thanks for POTD, Flavor. BTW, I loved the video at the Public House. Reminded me of the scene at Clubhouse 56 here in Sacramento when Renteria hit the HR. I actually got misty thinking about how long all of us waited to celebrate a World Series win.

  18. eddacker said, on January 7, 2011 at 4:06 pm

well, I put flap and SF in my google and got something about a gay parade cockup. cheerio, then, moving on:
THE CONTEST – we have a winner!
Looks like we are headed for a victory celebration!
    :
Chuck has 2 (LaRoche to the Nats for the win)
and 5 of you (see below) have 1 correct pick with one FA to go – Vlad (everyone except sanDog picked Rangers) these I am finding today:

According to Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes, the Angels, Orioles and Rays have interest in Vladimir Guerrero
During an appearance on MLB Network Radio on Wednesday, Angels manager Mike Scioscia didn’t rule out the possibility that Vladimir Guerrero could return to the club.

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said Wednesday that the club is out on Vladimir Guerrero.

here is my accounting, which is known to suck:
    WHO PLAYER FINAL HOME
    Blade: Beltre Rangers
    Chuckles: Cabrera Reds
    Chuckles: La Roche Nationals
    Craig: Cabrera Reds
    DeCap: Cabrera Reds
    Dennis: Cabrera Reds
    No One Renteria Reds
    Ted: LaRoche Nationals

Just checked out the MLBTR site on the Reds picking up RentMan. Seems like all blogs have their Splashers. Some Giants fan calling himself “LinceCumOnYourFace made a comment on the topic and another fan got all ballistic over the cute but silly screen-name. He was worried that some innocent teenage boy would read it and get all perverted or something. Oh yes, the teenpeepee protection syndrome is everywhere. As if those raunchy little minds aren’t checking out every pornsite which suits their fancy. Our society has become overly protective when it comes to human sexuality in the young. Maybe the dude cannot recall his own adolescence.

Wow. Are you kidding me? You mean when I bought my 15 year old kid a laptop computer 6 years ago I gave him access to, to . . . information? Oh lard, oh lard.

Very interesting take on the HOF candidates. Flavor, read this article and see if you still think Blyleven doesn’t belong in the Hall. That is one amazing career WAR…

Chuck does not have LaRoche to Nats- he has him to Baltimore.GiantHeaad has LaRoche to Nats.

    • twinfan said, on January 7, 2011 at 4:59 pm

You’d better redo, Ed. Ted doesn’t have LaRche to to Nats, either.

      • eddacker415 said, on January 8, 2011 at 5:04 am

As always Twin is the final decision!
here is what I have, your mileage may vary.
MadDog and GHead were the pick for LaRoche to the Nats

only Blade had Beltre with the Rangers

only SanDog (Oakland) has Vlad (not signed|) going anywhere but the Rangers

we all missed on Rent to the Reds

        Orlando Cabrera has not signed:

        Irish:A’s

        Zumie:Angels

        SportDude: free pick

        Max:Orioles

        Blade:SanDiegoPadres*

        Dennis:Reds
        DeCap:Reds
        Craig:Reds
        Chuckles:Reds

        MacDog:Twins

  24. TedSpe said, on January 7, 2011 at 5:31 pm

    Oops. I had Baltimore

  25. max808 said, on January 7, 2011 at 6:00 pm

Don’t know how Edd screwed that up, but as I posted yesterday,
Only Blade, Macdog and Ghead with 1 right so far. Since everyone has Vlad going to Texas, it comes down to Cabrerra.

I remain somewhat skeptical of Harbaugh, but they had to do it. They needed him for the fans and he won’t hurt the stadium push.
He’ll face a different breed of athlete for sure than the Stanford– UCD guy who was already academically motivated.

  26. max808 said, on January 7, 2011 at 6:01 pm

    Or rather UCSD.

    • snarkk said, on January 7, 2011 at 6:04 pm

USD Torreros. UCSD has no football squad, but a really nice acquarium…

Great interview with Costas and Juan Marichal.

  29. snarkk said, on January 7, 2011 at 11:11 pm

Thank Kee-Reist. FP Santangaroid is leaving KNBR to be the color dude on Nats TV. Now maybe they can appoint an adult on the Giants post-game radio show…
