A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Santiago Casilla

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on January 20, 2011

He’s going to make 1.3 million next year, a nice bump from his minimum salary from last year. He stranded 41 of 47 base runners last year, that was 2nd best ratio in all of MLB.  That astounds me. I remember situations he would get into and just smack my forehead going “How the hell did he get out of that?!?!?!?!”. He did have an unbelievable 2nd half so either Raggs taught him something or….who knows. Luck? His first half WHIP was 1.62, his 2nd half WHIP was 1.00. We all know he’s got amazing stuff but that only carries you so far. Ask Denny Bautista about great stuff…….

But whatever, it’s impossible not to honor Casilla for the amazing role he played in our 2010 season. Welcome back…..

If he has his control problems resolved-he’s the 8th inning guy. If not? A potential problem again. Amazing what Bochy has gotten out of the pen with “set up by committee”..
Off to SF for the “mapping” MRI, blood panel, etc. I’ll come back home tonight even though I’m scheduled for 6 A.M. surgery. It’s about a 5 hour deal, BTW.
And there’s stll that slim chance the MRI shows just necrosis.

    • Bozo said, on January 20, 2011 at 9:46 am

Good luck TF. I hope the MRI just shows necrosis if it means you can avoid the surgery.

  2. Rough Trade said, on January 20, 2011 at 8:19 am

Who dat skinny guy wearing 25?

Good to see Casilla, Ramirez, and Lopez returning. All for about what the A’s just paid Fuentes.

  3. zumarust said, on January 20, 2011 at 9:20 am

All the best, TF. You’re in our thoughts and prayers.

  4. Rough Trade said, on January 20, 2011 at 9:44 am

    Yes, best of luck twinfan.

  5. TedSpe said, on January 20, 2011 at 9:44 am

Let’s hope first for that slim chance, twin. And speaking of slim, yeah RT, who the hell *is* that skinny guy??? (insert gay ass winking smiley face)

  6. Bozo said, on January 20, 2011 at 9:49 am

Bring the heat Casilla. Would he be the definition of effectively wild?

  7. Bozo said, on January 20, 2011 at 9:54 am

With the flash going off, I wonder if BB is going for number 500 or something there?

  8. stixwiz said, on January 20, 2011 at 10:05 am

Keep on winning Michael. We’re with you all the way.

  9. Giant Head said, on January 20, 2011 at 10:13 am

    Good luck Twin…keep fighting…

Looks like the Giants just agreed t o a one-year with Javy Lopez…I dont see moeny details…

  10. delmardennis said, on January 20, 2011 at 11:18 am

Best of luck, TF. We’ll put down an extra bet for ya at the window.

Looks like we’ve found our #6 starter. Say hello to Jeff Suppan.

  11. snarkk said, on January 20, 2011 at 11:32 am

Jeff Suppan may be the doppelganger of Walkemeyer. If he gets near the mound for the Giants, get the fire department ready to go…

  12. Rough Trade said, on January 20, 2011 at 11:53 am

Suppan is as good as could reasonably be expected for a 6th.

I like the comment from blogger ‘bloodysock’:

“Soup’s stats are eerily similar to Beckett’s (5.78 ERA; 1.54 WHIP; 127.2 innings)
and the Sox signed him to an extension.

  13. Giant Head said, on January 20, 2011 at 11:54 am

Just saw hat about Suppan…or as he should be called, “Suckon!”

I was going to try and get comments about trying to make a deal for Armando Galaraga instead since the Tigers DFA’d him. We might have been able to trade for Galaraga for very little and may not have been stuck more than the $2 mill the Tigers signed him for 2011.

Galaraga in the NL and pitching in SF may be far more effective than in the AL. All I know is Suckon will continue sucking on….

    • snarkk said, on January 20, 2011 at 12:32 pm

If Suppan is a guy ultimately considered to be on deck if one of the SF starters gets hurt, then the minors really are empty of starting talent. On a bad staff last year, he literally got booed out of Milwaukee with a half season to go and a $2M buyout on his ridiculous deal…

  14. Bozo said, on January 20, 2011 at 12:47 pm

Insurance? Suppan is like going from Allstate to Somestates and you’re not living in the right State.
It seems to me, whenever we get a guy the Cards don’t want anymore they don’t do so well for us. Hopefully nobody gets hurt and/or hopefully I’m wrong.

  15. PawlieKokonuts said, on January 20, 2011 at 1:00 pm

We’re in your corner, Twin, all the way.

  16. Big Flavor said, on January 20, 2011 at 1:43 pm

Suppan is fine, whatever, I’d rather have him than Casey Daigle or whoever the fuck that guy is…..

    • snarkk said, on January 20, 2011 at 2:11 pm

We know Suppan suxxx. Do we know Daigle suxx? Maybe he does, but he probably wouldn’t cost as much…

  17. xootsuit said, on January 20, 2011 at 2:04 pm

Didn’t number 500 occur in LA? I was on business down there when he hit some milestone homer and the local sportscasters really showed how much they loved the greatest hitter in baseball.

    • xootsuit said, on January 20, 2011 at 2:08 pm

I guess it was just against LA, but at home.

    • xootsuit said, on January 20, 2011 at 2:10 pm

And by the time he started hitting at PacBell, Bonds wasn’t very skinny.

      • Bozo said, on January 20, 2011 at 2:25 pm

xoot – that sure looks like PacBell to me and with a good crowed to boot.

      • xootsuit said, on January 20, 2011 at 4:04 pm

yep. that is definitely PacBell. Must be the photo that makes him look so skinny.

  18. Big Flavor said, on January 20, 2011 at 2:30 pm

500 occurred at Pac Bell, I was at that game….

  19. Flavor said, on January 20, 2011 at 4:41 pm

I condense and expand the photo’s depending on their size so that they fit into the shitty little spot that wordpress gives me. He looks skinny because I had to change to size of that particular photo…..

    • xootsuit said, on January 20, 2011 at 5:27 pm

well, fretting over Barry’s great career (pre-roid, post-roid?) is more interesting than thinking about Suppan.

  20. twinfan said, on January 20, 2011 at 6:03 pm

Surgery put off until next Friday. New concerns about my heart. Need to get some tests next week. If they can’t do surgery, I’m basically screwed.

  21. TedSpe said, on January 20, 2011 at 6:14 pm

Yikes. Well, get some rest this weekend. Take it easy.

  22. Nipper said, on January 20, 2011 at 6:55 pm

    Good luck Twin.

  23. Flavor said, on January 20, 2011 at 6:59 pm

the beauty of “two flaps up” is that they’re always up, my man……

  24. twinfan said, on January 20, 2011 at 8:06 pm

I’m short of breath, which I attribute to the weight gain from the decadron.I was 205 today, 45 pound gain in the last year. I guess they’ll do a stress test next week. Dr. Aghi called this evening- MRI definitely shows tumor but it’s not currently growing.

  25. xootsuit said, on January 20, 2011 at 10:15 pm

If the tumor’s not growing, maybe there’s plenty of time for weight loss? Of course, the drugs they’ll prescribe to help that effort could have side effects too. In any event, twin, it sounds like you’ve obtained the best MDs available. And I doubt there’s anything weak about the metaphoric heart. Good luck.

  26. xootsuit said, on January 20, 2011 at 11:03 pm

Just saw a ch. 2 sports note claiming Torres has agreed to $2.1MM for one year. He committed one error — one error — last season. I remember it well. It was a tough play to deep CF at China Basin. WTF! I shouted at the tv. You’re better than that! He’s probably better than $2.1M, too, but that’s still a pretty good pay raise for him, and a payroll coup for the front office. Don’t you just get the sense that the Giants are doing things right?

  27. Unca Chuck said, on January 21, 2011 at 8:13 am

    Pretty cool, Pawie . . .

  28. ewisco said, on January 21, 2011 at 9:42 am

good luck twin. every day above ground is a good one.

i like the suppan signing as a six-guy. it would be nice to see more talent in the minors though.

  29. TedSpe said, on January 21, 2011 at 10:30 am

Hey Flav, how come the Say Hey Kid’s picture hasn’t replaced the Bondsman? Or is that just a little too obvious?

  30. Flavor said, on January 21, 2011 at 12:29 pm

naw, just busy. How could I go with anything other than WM? Pawlie would have renounced the blog had I not done that!

  31. PawlieKokonuts said, on January 21, 2011 at 1:43 pm

Yoikes! Honestly, the more I find out about the Giants’ fan base, the more I begin to think that NO ONE (not Cubs or Red Sox or anyone) beats our loyalty and fervor. No one.

    Proud and basking.

    Check this out:

    http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110119&content_id=16461810&vkey=news_sf&c_id=sf

I think it’s wise I went to SF instead of Finnerty’s for the WS. MoMo’s was a tough enough threat to my longtime sobriety. Finnerty’s woulda been cuh-razy.

  32. PawlieKokonuts said, on January 21, 2011 at 1:45 pm

And I did not know the half of this about the Polo Grounds:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/20/sports/20polo.html

Angers me all the more that the Mets’ CitiField is so feckin Dodgers-oriented.

Can’t wait to find footage of Willie at PS 46 today. Hope he made it ahead of the snowstorm.

  33. snarkk said, on January 21, 2011 at 2:26 pm

Wilpon is an old Dodger fan, hence the Citi Field homage to Ebbets. But, the Mets NY logo is essentially the old NY Giants logo…

  34. stixwiz said, on January 21, 2011 at 2:39 pm

Flav: Nice touch on the Mays jersey for the countdown. If someone doesn’t know the number of the greatest player who ever donned spikes he’s obviously not a Flapper.

  35. TedSpe said, on January 21, 2011 at 3:56 pm

Mychael Urban’s been fired from KNBR (still with Comcast, though). That tool annoyed me even more than FP

    • xootsuit said, on January 21, 2011 at 4:56 pm

Good news! Maybe The Showtime people are forcing the Giants to clean house before the cameras come in.

  36. sinceseventy8 said, on January 21, 2011 at 4:06 pm

Thank you Pawlie for all of the links & the video on the Polo Grounds. My Dad is really enjoying reliving the old days in NY. He’s told me stories about Willie playing stickball with the kids & taking them for ice cream. I haven’t posted since near the end of the WS & most of you probably don’t know I ever did. I still read every day & enjoy the comments. Can’t wait until 24 days from now. I also want to wish twinfan the best – I really enjoy your comments on baseball & life in general. I started reading Giants blogs because of you. My best to you all & good luck to all Giants fans in 2011.

  37. twinfan said, on January 21, 2011 at 6:36 pm

    Thanks, 78….
Hey, Soph says she called UCSF today and asked for “Crabby”. If she’d called yesterday they would have found me in an instant. I was PISSED.

    • sinceseventy8 said, on January 21, 2011 at 7:46 pm

No problem twin – I hope to read your comments for many more years to come …

  38. Flavor said, on January 21, 2011 at 6:50 pm

’78, I appreciate your post. A lot of guys read Giants blogs, including this one, because of Twin’s participation in the giants blog world. You guys get to enjoy interacting with one of the number 1 Giants fans of all time, you should notice that now and again……

    • sinceseventy8 said, on January 21, 2011 at 7:21 pm

Flavor – can you give me you email address? I have a few pics I would like to send you. Thanks

  39. Flavor said, on January 21, 2011 at 7:01 pm

the Angels are fucking retarded morons. Trading for Vernon Wells? I don’t give a flying fuck what he did last year, he is probably the most overpaid player in all of baseball based on production (besides Zito). And they TRADED for him. Shit, Napoli, if given a starting spot, might hit more HR’s than him. They coulda paid him 6 mil to do that. Instead they trade for “Mr Nagging Injury” and get to pay him 86 more million. Shit, why didn’t they just overpay for Carl Crawford?

  40. snarkk said, on January 21, 2011 at 7:48 pm

They probably cut Urban mostly for financial reasons. Friggin Marty Lurie does marathon sessions on the pre and post game shows on weekends, and probably does most of it for free. Urban will still show up on CSNBA to peddle his piddle…

    • sinceseventy8 said, on January 21, 2011 at 7:59 pm

I admit ignorance to the local scene … except for watching on kostaz & myP2P …
Was Urban on the same network as FP? If so .. wouldn’t there be more cash for Urban if they really wanted him back?

  41. snarkk said, on January 21, 2011 at 7:54 pm

If KNBR puts Byrnes on the post game show, I’m going to re-consider the loss of FP Santangaroid. Byrnes is an even worse frat boy type and baseball airhead, but he fits the bill of a no to low level critic of any Giants moves, so Baer will put the screws on KNBR to hire him. I wouldn’t be surprised…

  42. Flavor said, on January 21, 2011 at 8:07 pm

Urban is out? Well, he’s pompous and loud enough to cobble together a better gig somewhere else, I guess. He’d have to say “Zito is my best friend” a bunch of times but he’s got that down so no problem there. Urban is a doof, if he’s gone it’s no worse of a loss than FP……..

  43. Flavor said, on January 21, 2011 at 8:10 pm

Snarkk– I could TOTALLY see them going the Byrnsie route. Dude has his $, he’s just doing this for attention (which he craves) and the fact that he thinks he’s good at it. He’s local, he’s actually quite popular here….He could easily be the next “FP” and if it wasn’t for the rock solid hold that K/K have on their roles I could have seen KNBR grooming Byrnsie for the color job……..

  44. Flavor said, on January 21, 2011 at 8:12 pm

2.1 mil for Torres. Excellent. I couldn’t be happier for the guy…….

  45. sinceseventy8 said, on January 21, 2011 at 8:51 pm

Flavor – I sent you some emails, let me know if you didn’t get them …

  46. ewisco said, on January 21, 2011 at 10:45 pm

really? we hate urbs? I admit i didn’t dig the ear-ring but other than that i didn’t notice that he began to suck at the level of fp. and until they cut radnich loose, I can’t see how anyone can complain. radnich: idiot, blowhard, fool.

it’s a pretty low bar. to think urb’s crept under it is hard to understand.

    now the twin bar . . .

    • ewisco said, on January 21, 2011 at 10:46 pm

i walked into a twin bar and let me tell you . . .

  47. TedSpe said, on January 22, 2011 at 1:48 am

soph said he called “crabby” at UCSF? Wow. That’s beneath the pale. It’s bad enough being a fantasy tranny fuckhead getting laughs at morons’ expense. But the morons’ like playing along with the shithead so what can one say?. But making an ignorant fucking post about pretending to call someone who went into a hospital for brain surgery when you know it didn’t occur?
    Crossing the line.
Inhuman. Even on the internet. Inhuman.
