A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Team Spring Training Stats and Brian Wilson

With our stellar ST record, I was surprised to see us near the bottom of the league with a .258 batting average. The Milwaukee Brewers are hitting a mind blowing .337 as a team. Crazy. We’re 4th in the league in ERA which is no surprise. I WAS surprised to see the A’s 2nd to last in team ERA at 5.65. That staff is one of the best in baseball….

Wilson is saying he’s going to be ready for opening day. Uh huh. Right. Something still isn’t sitting right with me about him, specifically how he conducted himself in the off season. If you are going to brag about your hooker-laden trip through Thailand, show up on late night tv shows dressed like a fool and associate yourself with Charlie Sheen (winning!) then you better be able to answer the bell when your job starts. And he just hasn’t been able to do that. First the back injury and now an oblique thing has popped up. To me, that’s a guy who just didn’t take care of his core this Winter. And for a pitcher, you just have to do that. He can SAY he’s going to be ready for opening day but even if he is physically able to pitch he simply hasn’t thrown enough innings to be READY for opening day. He’s pitched 5 freaking innings….

Brian Wilson has earned the benefit of the doubt for all he’s done in his career for us. But these core injuries are an ominous sign. And when you put yourself out there the way he did this off season you’re also gonna need to be accountable for the flip side of the fame and focus that you bring on himself. There’s a fine line between winning(!) and, well, not winning……

And believe me, I get the cultural issue here. But it will never not color my bias. It’s always gonna be my little girl. And there is no story or cultural difference that will explain away that industry to me…

Another interesting aspect of the cultural differences is that most Thais are devout Buddhists. The selling of one’s body runs very counter to strict Buddhism. They get around that by applying the thinking that if whatever they (Thais) do, to or for themselves personally, helps the family, then so be it, because taking care of family is one of the highest ideals of Buddhism in their eyes. It’s actually a very complex issue. I fully understand why you having a young daughter would cause you to have such strong opinions about this, cultural differences or not.

Had to travel down into the great Central Valley today. I stopped at an In N Out. I had a single burger, no cheez, animal protein style. I was proud of that, until I thought why the hell even have a hamburger, if you order it to look like a meat salad? Timmeh would probably have ordered a dozen…

Again, though, Flav, yer basing this on zero proof.

There’s nothing wrong with that, but sometimes, you get hurt.

No shit for Matt and his elbow? Yeah, he wasn’t all over the airwaves, but he hurt his elbow.

I kid myself that the awesome burgers I make with the beef from the Cafe Rouge meat counter are less of a threat to my 51-year old heart than those shitty In-N-Out patties.

Ted, in reply to your post about Liz Taylor earlier this am, here’s a clip from Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Liz isn’t wearing a bikini, but she’s absolutely smokin’ here, fully clothed. And Newman is damn near as gorgeous. If it were Liz vs. Marilyn back in those days, that would be a tough, tough choice — now, that would be some kinda double double…
    RIP, Liz…
