A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Game 1 Goes to The Champs

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 19, 2011

The Rockies found out that the SF Giants are not the NY Mets. I don’t think you could have scripted a game to go much better. Three bombs in the first inning? Timmy throwing a no hitter into the 7th? Basically, that was a good ol’ fashioned beat-down. A beat down that I didn’t not expect, frankly.

I’m sure the Rockies were bummed that Ubaldo’s start got pushed back a day– Lincecum vs Esmil Whoever turned out to not even be a fair fight……

How ’bout the story about Nate’s brother scoring the ball that Nate hit into the upper deck? Very cool. Was anyone else surprised at how few fans were at this game? Come on Denver, your team has the best record in baseball and you’re staying home to watch Dancing with the Stars? Weak……

Great post Flav, especially regarding the attendance . . . I was in down town Denver last night with my girl friend and it was a nice evening, i.e., the weather was fine – so they can’t use that as an excuse. I’ve posted this before here – Rockies fans are FAIR WEATHERED AND BAND WAGON TYPE FANS. GO TO THE DENVER POST AND SEE HOW MANY LETTERS/COMMENTS ARE POSTED ON EACH GAME AND/OR COLUMN ABOUT THE ROCKIES . . . MAYBE A FEW DOZEN ON A GOOD DAY (IF THEY ARE WINNING) . OTHERWISE, THIS IS A COW TOWN THAT ONLY LIKES FOOTBALL.

Also, more times than not, the opposing team will have as many fans, sometimes more than the Rockies in attendance, especially when the Cubs, Giants, or Red Sox are in town. That’s a fact jack.

    31,079 fans is weak.

so what was your reason for not being at the game? LQTM…..

I was driving up to SF with my kids yesterday and the game on the radio provided great entertainment along the way. We tuned in right when all the pre-game shows started and were crossing the bay bridge as the game ended. A road trip with a Giants game on the radio is a thing of beauty in my book. My daughter even took off her headphones every now and then to ask what the score was. (She also asked if Fred Lewis was still on the Giants—she needs a little work in the Giants-fan department)
Fun Fact: I was at the game at Coors years ago when Barry put one in the 3rd deck—Miller said that for the Giants, only Barry had done that before Nate last night. I was going nuts and the crowd hardly reacted. At the time I remember being kinda impressed with the Rockies home crowd for not giving it a shit about something a road player did.

Burrell has hit all his HRs this year off righties. Last year he hit righties better than Lefties too, altho his OB was better because he took more walks. Gamer (who didn’t hit anywhere well as we know) so far has been the opp-better vs. lefties, and better on the road than at home. Easy solution…gamer plays LF vs. lefties, burrell vs. righties. gamer plays on the road, burrell at home,
Sure, nothing is that simple but I think James made a good point last night. Gamer OPS last year under .700, never had one month over .500 slugging. Burrell near .800 OPS, 3 solid months over .500 slugging. Defense? no question, but for 6 innings and 3 ABs, I’d give him a solid chance in there. I don’t think he is done, while I do think Gamer over a long haul isn’t going to get back to numbers he put up earlier seasons.

Another reason to avoid A’s entirely…tonite the place will be half full of annoying Boston fans

The Sacramento Bee stated that in getting that 12-4 record they had not played a team with a winning record.

  9. Unca Chuck said, on April 19, 2011 at 8:33 am

The Bee also said that Burrell was ‘begging’ to get taken out of the game while Timmy was still pitching his no-no as to not be a defensive liability and not be able to get to a ballo someone else could.

What is it with the Jekyll and Hyde offense? As long as Rogers was pitching for the Rox, Dr. Jekyll was having his way with the dude. Soon as Viggo Mortensen shows up waving the Dannebrog, Mr. Hyde is nowhere to be found. Happened much the same in that last Aridzona game, where they caught onto Enright in that happy sixth and then couldn’t do a damn thing against a raft of relievers. So which one is for real?

With Timmy’s win, now its the Rox who are sweating sweep. Not that it’s likely to happen in that venue, but for the first time in the season Colorado is not so cocky. They will be gunning hard at Drrrty tonight, knowing that tomorrow they have to face Cool Hand Luke, wondering if anyone is ever gonna be able to ride that Horse. When you get your major Divisional opponent sweating a series in their own Box of Rox, you must be doing something right.

Yahoo sports MLB seems to have taken a liking to the World Champs. Today’s coverage includes a block on their main page devoted to Giants doings. It contains four separate vignettes. Nice to see a bit of respect for our guys.

I imagine it’s the east coast fans who will soon whine about the bias for anything Giants. Showtime isn’t the only one smelling the money.

“Easy solution…gamer plays LF vs. lefties, burrell vs. righties. gamer plays on the road, burrell at home”..Won’t happen.
Belt is still the “favorite” to go down but Ford’s misplay could buy Brandon more time..

    • willied said, on April 19, 2011 at 12:56 pm

of course, that part was totally tongue in cheek. but I don’t think after all these years Gamer has adjusted to hitting at home and he is more comfortable elsewhere. It was nice to see him whack base hits up the middle and hit the ball hard lately. but mixed in there have also been 2 days out of the last 4 where he went 0-5, both on the road. I give him credit for what he has done so far, I just don’t see him maintaining it no matter how often he is in the LU, which he played himself out of last year.

    blade can probably relate:

    Colorado
by Christopher Guest, Sean Kelly, and Tony Hendra, 1973

I’m stuck in this old city now where living ain’t no fun
Where steel and glass and concrete cancel out the wind and sun
And I’m thinking of last winter now
when we walked hand in hand
In the trails of the Colorado Rockies
The wind sang us a lullaby, the snow was thick as cream,
And icicles were chandeliers like crystal in a dream
And the streams were strips of diamond
And the hills were white as snow,
And a bear ate all our soybeans in the night

    Oh, Colorado’s calling me
From her hillsides and her rivers and her mesas and her trees,
When blizzards snap the power lines
    And all the toilets freeze
In December in the Colorado Rockies

We had time and space and freedom,
We had love and peace to spare
Though we ran out of things to smoke and say and eat and wear
And the morning of the avalanche
    The Yeti kidnapped Blanche
And took her to his cave up in the Rockies.

    Oh, Colorado’s calling me
From her glaciers and her canyons and her badlands and ravines,
    And infectious hepatitis
Was all that came to stay
In January in the Colorado Rockies

The baby didn’t die until we’d burned up all our wood
Considering we ate her raw, she tasted pretty good
    Then the fascist health inspectors
Dug us out and mailed us home —
Except for Blanche who wouldn’t leave her mate.

    Oh, Colorado’s calling me
From her mountains and her rivers and her meadows and her trees
They tell me I’ll be cured soon
    Thawed and ready to return
When it’s April in the Colorado Rockies.

I still remember, it was autumn and the moon was shinin’
Our ’60 Cadillac was roarin’ thru Nebraska whinin’
Doing a hundred-twenty, man, the fields was bendin’ over
Headin’ out for the mountains knowin’ we was travelin’ further
All our fires were blazin’ and the spinning wheels were turnin’ turnin’
Had my girl beside me brother brother, she was burnin’ burnin’

I walked up at this Baptist preachin’ Southern funky school teacher
She had a line on something heavy but we couldn’t reach her
We told her that we needed something that would get us goin’
She pulled out all she had and laid it on the counter showin’
All I had to do was lay my money down and pick it up
The cops came bustin’ in and then we lit out in a pick-up truck

    And go
Get out of Denver, better go go
Get out of Denver, better go
Get out of Denver, better go go
    Get out of Denver
‘Cause you look just like a Commie, and you might just be a member, better
    Get out of Denver, better
    Get out of Denver

Well, the lights were flashin’ and the sirens were a-screamin’ screamin’
We had to pinch each other just to see if we was dreamin’
Made it to Loveland Pass in under less than half an hour
[ Bob Seger Lyrics are found on http://www.songlyrics.com ]
Lord, it started drizzlin’ and it turned into a thunder shower

The rain was drivin’ but the Caddy kept on burnin’ rubber
We kept on drivin’ till we ran into some fog cover
We couldn’t see a thing, but somehow we just kept on goin’
We kept on drivin’ all night long and then into the mornin’
Fog, it finally lifted, when we looked to see where we was at
We were starin’ at a Colorado State Policeman Trooper cat

    And go
Get out of Denver, better go go
Get out of Denver, better go
Get out of Denver, better go go
    Get out of Denver
‘Cause you look just like a Commie, and you might just be a member, better
    Get out of Denver, better
    Get out of Denver

    Better go go
Get out of Denver, better go go
Get out of Denver, better go
Get out of Denver, better go go
    Get out of Denver
‘Cause you look just like a Commie, and you might just be a member, better
Get out of Denver, better go!

Reminds me of a movie that I saw in high school Chuck . . . It was called Vanishing Point, with Barry Newman (maybe the only good film he made) about an ex-cop who has a delivery consignment to drive a Dodge Challenger to California . . . He does that fueled by “uppers” and cheered on by a radio disk jockey, Cleavon Little, merrily avoiding cops along the way. Great cult film.

      • TedSpe said, on April 19, 2011 at 10:50 am

Excellent film, blade. Newman did a couple other good things though. Most recently, a good supporting part in THE LIMEY

      • Unca Chuck said, on April 19, 2011 at 10:53 am

One of my all time faves, blade. . . That was the age of car movies. Gone in 60 Seconds. The Gumball Rally (Cannonball Run is a pale imitation). Even Death Race 2000.

What was that other one with Peter Fonda? Crazy Larry and Dirty Mary? Something about qualifying for Daytona or some shit. They end up playing cat and mouse with Vic Morrow . . . Susan George was the girl I think. It was the blueprint for Smiokey and the Bandit.

      • Unca Chuck said, on April 19, 2011 at 10:55 am

        And. of course, Bullitt . . .

      • TedSpe said, on April 19, 2011 at 11:14 am

You got it backwards, chuck. DIRTY MARY, CRAZY LARRY. They hold a bank president’s (Roddy McDowall, uncredited) family for ransom at the beginning and geytthe payoff, that’s why Morrow’s after them. I don’t remember the Daytona stuff but you could be right. And speaking of THE GUMBALL RALLY, its star, Michael Sarrazin just passed away today. R.I.P.

      • blade3colorado said, on April 19, 2011 at 11:22 am

There was a retrospective about that genre of movies that had car chases. that I saw not too long ago (wish I could remember the name) . . . it was really good. I always thought that Bullitt sort of started it all, but the documentary pointed out that the Great Escape (Steve McQueen motorcycle jump standing out and I don’t think he actually did the stunt . . . Help me Ted) actually could be cited as the beginning of the “chase” scene.

      • blade3colorado said, on April 19, 2011 at 11:24 am

Correction on that last sentence . . . I should have said “popularity” or “renaissance” (sp) vs. “beginning” since chase scenes have been around since the advent of film.

      • blade3colorado said, on April 19, 2011 at 11:26 am

Haven’t seen Sarrazin in anything for years . . . Will always think of him as eternally young. For 14 years he was in a relationship with actress Jacqueline Bisset, whom he met in the 1968 film The Sweet Ride.

      • TedSpe said, on April 19, 2011 at 11:31 am

blade, no McQueen didn’t do the actual motorcycle jump, though I read he tried and screwed up. It was done by Bud Ekins who also drove the Mustang in BULLITT. He was a good friend of McQueen’s up to the end of his life. Most of the American cinema’s memorable motorcycle stunts from the ’60’s-’70’s were done by him.

      • Unca Chuck said, on April 19, 2011 at 11:37 am

Yeah, McQueen wasn’t allowed to do the jump for insurance purposes . . .

Funny, I just found my old VCR tape of the Blob the other day.

      • TedSpe said, on April 19, 2011 at 11:38 am

As for Sarrazin, I had never heard of him until I was watching a TV movie called FRANKENSTEIN:THE TRUE STORY when I was a wee lad. When his name came up on the credits as The Creature, both my parents said “Wow. HE’S palying the monster?” I asked what they meant and they said “Just wait till you see what he looks like”

      • Unca Chuck said, on April 19, 2011 at 11:41 am

Ted, actually Steve McQueen did most of the driving for Bullitt. And yeah, Bud Elkins did the jump in Escape . . . although McQueen did a lot of the riding in the movie, including chasing himself (as himself and the German chasing him).

On Any Sunday is still another fave of mine. Same with Le Mans . . .

      • Unca Chuck said, on April 19, 2011 at 11:43 am

      • TedSpe said, on April 19, 2011 at 11:56 am

Yeah Check, McQueen did a lot of the driving in BULLITT but not the hill jumps, that’s what I meant

Pat’s jack brought near-ATT level cheers, though CarGo’s single for the first hit was def louder. We were seated at the same level as Nate’s blast, it was unreal to watch a ball get all the way up there. Ran into Timmy on the street leaving the Westin afterwards, presumably to go celebrate his near no-no. Would post a very uninteresting cell phone pic if I knew how.

That last at-bat in the last Arizona game was probably the final straw for Belt. He got ahead 3-1 in the count, and then took two called strikes for a strike-out. He has to be more aggressive in that situation. Everybody loves the kid’s eye for the strikezone, and his ability to draw a walk, but he’s got to take some hacks too. There’s the right balance he needs to find.
The Giants are still high on him. He’ll get some more Fresno time, though.

nonetheless, I think the myth of Brian Wilson screwball will persist for a while.

Sarrazin was a fairly regular drinking buddy of me and many others at Barney’s Beanery in the mid 90’s. Sad to hear he died.

    • TedSpe said, on April 19, 2011 at 5:40 pm

      Really. That’s cool.

      • DJLoo said, on April 19, 2011 at 5:46 pm

Yeah, he was there a lot. Seemed to wind up on the stool next to me quite often. That place attracted all kinds, but few celebs.

    I’m watching on the Rockies station . . . Announcer – after Sandoval’s HR . . . “YOU’VE GOT TO BE KIDDING!”

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

    Here we go again

  48. stixwiz said, on April 19, 2011 at 5:54 pm

Panda is BACK. Total reversion to form.

  49. blade3colorado said, on April 19, 2011 at 5:57 pm

Anyone else think Wigginton looks like the bizzaro Freddie Sanchez? What I mean is that he looks like someone that never turns down a meal . . . Sanchez looks like he needs a meal.

  50. Big Flavor said, on April 19, 2011 at 5:58 pm

Panda Austin. “we can rebuild him”. Boy, did they ever…

  51. Del Mar Dennis said, on April 19, 2011 at 5:58 pm

I think I’ve seen this before. All this games needs is for Bill Murray to play the part of a weatherman.

  52. stixwiz said, on April 19, 2011 at 6:01 pm

Burrell did something unusual in his A.B. Neither a dinger nor a walk, nor even a K., but a single!

    • TedSpe said, on April 19, 2011 at 6:01 pm

      Very rare

  53. James said, on April 19, 2011 at 6:04 pm

The notion that Belt needs to swing at more pitches in the strike zone (see Zumie’s earlier post) is just not accurate. His swing percentage in the zone is over 70%.

  54. stixwiz said, on April 19, 2011 at 6:12 pm

Some nice Drrrty dealing there. Slicing through CarGo and Tulo is always a fine feat.

  55. TedSpe said, on April 19, 2011 at 6:13 pm

C’mon Aaron. Take another one for the team
    😉

  56. James said, on April 19, 2011 at 6:34 pm

Thank goodness, another single for Burrell. If he had 2 hit more solo home runs, then we’d know that something was really wrong with him.

  57. twinfan said, on April 19, 2011 at 6:39 pm

There’s been some bitching about how SF has hit the relievers the last couple days but these have been classic “good team” wins-grab a lead when the starter is vulnerable…
Just maybe that 35 HR I called for Panda will happen this year.He has the look..

  58. PawlieKokonuts said, on April 19, 2011 at 6:44 pm

how come my boy Rowand came out?…wasn’t watching at kostaz003

    • zumarust said, on April 19, 2011 at 6:47 pm

He got hit in the elbow in his first at-bat.

      • PawlieKokonuts said, on April 19, 2011 at 6:51 pm

appreciate your update; did they say it was serious? I for one am not bitching about his performance — and have never faulted his attitude

        WHERE’S THAT PICTURE OF TIMMY?

      • zumarust said, on April 19, 2011 at 6:59 pm

Probably not all that serious. Might have tightened up on him or something.

  59. zumarust said, on April 19, 2011 at 6:45 pm

James, I’m all for deep statistical analysis, but I guarantee you that fried Bochy’s hide when Belt took those two called strikes on the strike out. It was late in a tied game, Belt is a homerun threat, and he’s trying to work a walk in a situation that called for trying to go deep. Game situations can dictate different approaches.

    • James said, on April 19, 2011 at 6:54 pm

No doubt, he looked bad there. But that was hardly typical of what we’ve seen from him. You could make an argument that his lack of solid contact is a result of being just a little too selective. Belt is not, however, taking lots of strikes in order to draw BBs.

  60. stixwiz said, on April 19, 2011 at 6:48 pm

Some very drrrrty dealing in the fourth. Heart of the order put down in style.

  61. PawlieKokonuts said, on April 19, 2011 at 6:49 pm

nice line by Halliday tonight: 6.2inn / 10 hits/ 6ER and his ERA is still only 2.83; gee, I thought the Phils’ rotation was headed straight to Cooperstown, skipping the mere formality of a career (A line supposedly used regarding alleged phenom Clint Hartung in the fifties)

    • zumarust said, on April 19, 2011 at 6:50 pm

Yeah, Halliday Hype-meister had a rough one today.

      • PawlieKokonuts said, on April 19, 2011 at 6:54 pm

Everyone does have a rough outing at one time or another. In the 70s was at a game in Cincy [was so drunk the memory is hazy]; Seaver vs. Carlton. I think Seaver got pounded and I was foolish [and drunk] enough to whoop it up in front of the hometown fans. Not prudent. Somehow made it out to tell the story.

  62. Bozo said, on April 19, 2011 at 6:58 pm

Bad call on Sanchez, he was safe. IMO.

    • James said, on April 19, 2011 at 7:03 pm

      Yep.

    • xootsuit said, on April 19, 2011 at 7:06 pm

The ump’s eyes were 6 feet away. The only “angle” the tv showed was from behind with the leg obscuring the first part of the tag. It was close, but we’ll never know.

    • Del Mar Dennis said, on April 19, 2011 at 7:08 pm

We got hosed again on the call at the plate.

    • xootsuit said, on April 19, 2011 at 7:09 pm

The camera had a much better view than the ump on Posey’s tag. That was a blown call.

  63. James said, on April 19, 2011 at 7:09 pm

No strike 3, no call at the plate.

  64. Del Mar Dennis said, on April 19, 2011 at 7:12 pm

And WTF was Pablo thinking on that play? Good way to get yourself hurt dummy.
    The play’s at first base.

  65. snarkk said, on April 19, 2011 at 7:14 pm

The ump’s eyes were on the runner’s foot on the plate. The tag was 4 or more feet away on the other foot. No better example for replay than that…

  66. twinfan said, on April 19, 2011 at 7:19 pm

    6th Inning, Dirrty’s Chinatown.

  67. unca chuck said, on April 19, 2011 at 7:24 pm

    Drrrrrrrrrty curveballs

  68. James said, on April 19, 2011 at 7:26 pm

A just in case thought: if Eckstein can play regularly at short with that rag arm, why not Fontenot?

    • unca chuck said, on April 19, 2011 at 7:36 pm

Cuz Tejada will drive in a lot more runs.

      Huffster!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • James said, on April 19, 2011 at 7:48 pm

Well, yeah, the expectation is that Tejada will provide more offense.

  69. stixwiz said, on April 19, 2011 at 7:28 pm

Extreeeeemly Drrrrrty dealing. Nice pick by Curly Joe. Doubtful if Tejada could have pulled that one off. Sanchez simply gotta be one of the most unhittable pitchers in the game. Something else again.

  70. Del Mar Dennis said, on April 19, 2011 at 7:38 pm

I think Huff was looking for that one. And, boy, did he ever get it.

  71. stixwiz said, on April 19, 2011 at 7:38 pm

That speed weapon dancing off second will not be credited in the Box Score on Huff the Magic Dragon’s two-run dinger. But it played a major role.

    • willied said, on April 19, 2011 at 7:42 pm

he sure did attract a lot of attention…taking the walk started it all off. All it used to take for wills to fuck up a game.

  72. PawlieKokonuts said, on April 19, 2011 at 7:44 pm

Turns out Mariano Rivera is human. Almost.

  73. willied said, on April 19, 2011 at 7:45 pm

? if you add up all the OFs (including ross and torres), who would be the top 3, combining all talents?

  74. xootsuit said, on April 19, 2011 at 7:45 pm

Replay on a tag error? Balls and strikes next? You’re obviously a football, not a baseball, fan.

    • xootsuit said, on April 19, 2011 at 7:47 pm

      well, a blown tag call
      I was distracted

  75. xootsuit said, on April 19, 2011 at 7:49 pm

Fontenot continues to impress. Miggy better step it up. (And he may.)
