A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

A 5 Run Explosion Leads to Another One Run Heart Attack Win

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 23, 2011

We scored 5 runs? Of course we won. 5 runs is like batting around 6 times in the first inning for this team. I don’t know if I’ve seen a cooler embrace than the one Ford and Burriss gave each other at the end of the game. Two Fresno Grizzlies finally get to get some and when you watch those guys motor around the field you just think “there has to be a place on the team for them.” Some people have argued there’s no room for a guy like Ford but I would argue how could you NOT have a guy like Ford? If he wins a game for us ever 2 to 3 weeks I’d say that’s an invaluable guy to have on your team. No player in baseball scores on that hit yesterday. Oh, except one……

With Tejada holding down 3rd base fairly well (I said last Winter he belongs at 3rd now, not SS) I would like to see Burriss get some starts at SS instead of Fontenot. Font is a nice little player but Burriss has, oh I don’t know, ELECTRICITY that has to be tapped. He’s bunting and hitting opposite field now–2 things he didn’t have a clue on how to do before. He’s turned a corner and if you don’t watch closely he’ll turn another one and be gone…..

He calls himself safe.

Pawlie, well-said about Bochy. He strikes just the right tone in those pre and post game shows. He stays positive about things, but doesn’t let stuff slide either. I guess it took the Donnie Two-trips moment for us fans to appreciate him, and his stock has soared from there on.

Yeah, I admit to having been a detractor — and maybe that episode turned me; I honestly don’t remember. But I like how he is tough but supportive of his guys. He called Affeldt’s performance a “hiccup” or something, and that he had talked to “Serg” about playing time. And he was so positive about Burris and “Fordie,” saying no one — no one — else is safe at home.

      • zumarust said, on May 23, 2011 at 6:50 pm

Yeah, Bochy has been a big part of that great team chemistry that we all enjoy watching. He’s the right manager for these guys. He manages a pitching staff well, and he’s created a strong team atmosphere with the position players, too, utilizing their versatility, whether dealing with injuries, or mixing and matching against opponents, riding the hot hand, etc.

Hamilton hits a bomb first day back. Hey, bring it on. I’d welcome a WS rematch. (Who’d ever imagine a Giants fan with such arrogance?)

I’m still smiling about that Kodak moment in the game yesterday (well, I’m not LITERALLY still smiling, but you know what I mean) when J. Sanchez fired that ball to F. Sanchez covering first. The Giants’ pitchers have been having all this trouble throwing balls to bases, and J. Sanchez just fires a rocket that goes right at Freddie’s groin, handcuffing him. He makes the catch, and walks toward J. Sanchez to toss him the ball and gives him a “WTF, dude?!” look that was pretty memorable.

That was Affeldt, Z.. I’m leaving the next line up for grabs

I like the way Hamilton plays, but he is always injured. That being said, I won the Flap league with him playing a key part. I had him in another league I am playing in right now and traded him immediately after he was injured for Cliff Lee and haven’t looked back. I’m in 1st place in that league by about 24 points . . . Of course, no where near the knowledge of Flappers, thus my continuing struggles in our Flap Down League.

By the by, when are we going to again have the standings posted on the Flap blog Flav, as well as your insightful comments?

    • zumarust said, on May 23, 2011 at 6:56 pm

Well, yeah, it’s “Fantasy baseball standings” to you folks in the league; to the rest of us, it’s “something we have to scroll past.” (grin)

Major technical problems at Casa De Flavor right now. Might have them resolved but the weekend.

I love all posts that love all things *something*. Seriously, float out an “I love all things (insert whatever)” into your next dinner convo or water cooler debate. It’s a crowd pleaser to be sure…..

Caveat: you have to say it in the third person….

what happened to keppinger? pretty solid guy last year, right?

  7. zumarust said, on May 23, 2011 at 7:14 pm

There are a lot of amazing statistics in Marichal’s career, but I think the one that amazes me the most is that he threw 10 shutouts one season.

    • SanDawg said, on May 23, 2011 at 7:22 pm

That is mind-blowing. The one about winning 200 games before losing 100 ain’t too shabby either.

    • blade3colorado said, on May 23, 2011 at 7:33 pm

My favorite pitcher of all time . . . Only reason he didn’t win a Cy Young aw . . . wait, multiple Cy Young awards, were because of Gibson, Koufax, and I’m not absolutely certain, but they use to only award one Cy Young for the entire MLB, i.e., this may have been changed when Marichal arrived on the scene.

Similarly, I think they did the same thing with Gold Gloves, which makes Mays achievement in that area even more amazing as well as anyone else awarded a GG during that period. Even more amazing is the fact that GGs weren’t started until 1957 and you would have a difficult time convincing me that Mays wouldn’t have been awarded a GG for all the years he played in going back to his rookie year in 1951.

for all the talk about what we need…Giants have 2nd best record in NL, and 3rd best in MLB…

Zumie: Yesterday at the Stanford Girls Regional game (yes I went to it instead of watching the Giants/A’s), Toby Gerhardt’s little sister pitched against a tough Nebraska squad. I forget the exact stat, but she’s pitched 28 complete games this year out of like 33 starts. Not sure about how many shutouts. But man, when you watch her pitch she’s dynamite. Cardinal beat Aksarben 4-1 yesterday to advance…….

    • zumarust said, on May 23, 2011 at 7:25 pm

It’s amazing how hard they throw underhanded, with good control. It’s one of those things in sports that almost doesn’t seem possible. Like people that can high jump over a bar that’s 7 feet tall. It seems like it shouldn’t be possible, but it is, using the right mechanics.

      • Flavor said, on May 23, 2011 at 7:39 pm

I left in the 6th inning cause I wanted to catch the last inning of the Stanford dude’s game next door. We walked in just in time to see the Cardinal rally in the 8th and close them out in the 9th. Perfect timing. But for my money, the girls are infinitely more interesting to watch. For one thing, you sit RIGHT ON the field. The chatter is clever and non-stop. The girls throw harder than any man I know. And every mother fucking last one of them are gamers. It doesn’t hurt that they are also outstanding role models for the girls in the stands…….

Keep a good thought for the Mountain Empire High Redhawks tomorrow as they host the favored Coronado Islanders in the first round of the CIF San Diego section division 3 playoffs.
Steven Cosmano on the mound for the ‘hawks.

Juan’s 10 shut outs made me recall the Larry Jaster Dodger Ownage – shut them out 5 times in 1966.Jaster’s five consecutive shutout victories against one team in a single season is still a major league record. I’d say that makes the ASTOUNDING!!!! files..

    • zumarust said, on May 23, 2011 at 7:51 pm

Never heard of him! I looked him up. 35-33 lifetime record. He was on the ’67 Cardinal team that won the World Series. Cool!

    • SanDawg said, on May 23, 2011 at 7:52 pm

Anyone who shuts out the Doggers 5X in one year is alright in my book…
Trivia Q for you Twin….who did Larry serve up a granny to in the WS?

      • zumarust said, on May 23, 2011 at 7:58 pm

Who was on that Red Sox team? Yaz and who else?

      • SanDawg said, on May 23, 2011 at 8:00 pm

Who said it had to be the ’67 WS?

      • twinfan said, on May 23, 2011 at 8:01 pm

OK, I didn’t know, looked it up. Jim Northrup.

      • zumarust said, on May 23, 2011 at 8:05 pm

Dang! I could have had a chance to get that right if I’d been thinking of that ’68 series. I read the excellent book about that World Series called “The Year Of The Tiger.” Actually….Northrup’s name I had forgotten…..

      • zumarust said, on May 23, 2011 at 8:06 pm

But I do remember that Lolich won 3 games in that series.

  13. twinfan said, on May 23, 2011 at 7:54 pm

Our good friend LiveFree would say a “career mediocrity”…

  14. zumarust said, on May 23, 2011 at 7:54 pm

Btw- there’s a Sadowski mentioned in the Marichal/Spahn book, that played for the Braves. Is that the father of the Sadowski that pitched for the Giants? Anyone know?

    • zumarust said, on May 23, 2011 at 8:02 pm

Actually, grandfather would be the right age bracket.

  15. SanDawg said, on May 23, 2011 at 8:06 pm

Full discolosure—I didn’t know that either. I knew the Gray Fox hit a granny in the world series, but didn’t know who the pitcher was and didn’t know about the Jaster Dodger-ownage.

  16. zumarust said, on May 23, 2011 at 8:12 pm

    Dodgers blow the save!

Well, the hockey season will be over soon. When does next season start? June 15?

I realize you’re being sarcastic but what frightens me is…you’re probaly right

  18. Flavor said, on May 23, 2011 at 8:20 pm

Zumie–watched that entire inning. That just had the feel of “Jansen is gonna blow this” didn’t it?
Closing is the hardest job in sports, we’ll see if he gets another shot at it. Dude has electric stuff…..

    • Del Mar Dennis said, on May 23, 2011 at 8:26 pm

He cost Kershaw and all his fantasy owners the W tonight. Jansen smokes pole.

      • Flavor said, on May 23, 2011 at 8:45 pm

actually he doesn’t smoke pole. He[‘s got great stuff. but that inning unfolded the way it always does for closers about to lose their save. Sometimes it just has to happen that way……..

    • TedSpe said, on May 23, 2011 at 8:43 pm

      Are you fucking kidding me??!!
Closing’s the fucking easiest job on the planet!!
Ooh. Ooh Mr. Manager . We’re already winning and I have to make sure we don’t stupidly lose? Gosh, Mr. Manager, I hope I can……

      And then I woke up

    • xootsuit said, on May 23, 2011 at 11:11 pm

I know you closed out a day game yesterday after a night game, but we need you now. The pen’s stretched and we’re talkin a one run lead now.
No way, skipper. This arm’s my ticket to big bucks next season. I’m not going to jeopardize it just to fix the fuck up you and your half ass players created.
What the fuck is wrong with you? You’re a closer! You’re supposed to be tough . . . and fearless.
Yeah, well, real closers are few and far between. Fearless ain’t really a normal human state of mind, you know? Me, I’m just a relief pitcher with a cutter — and a tired arm. So fuck off.

  19. twinfan said, on May 23, 2011 at 8:45 pm

I’d take Jansen in a heartbeat.

    • twinfan said, on May 23, 2011 at 9:06 pm

      Not to close.

  20. Del Mar Dennis said, on May 23, 2011 at 9:08 pm

OKC with one of the all-time great choke jobs in NBA history. They allow Dallas to go on a 17-2 run at the end of the 4th Q. to force OT. Then promptly lay down for another 5 minutes. Pathetic.

  21. twinfan said, on May 23, 2011 at 9:17 pm

My Prospect of the Day hit 3 HRs today.

    • TedSpe said, on May 23, 2011 at 9:26 pm

    He wouldn’t.. NEXT!!!

Brian Fuentes just took ANOTHER loss for the A’s tonight in Anaheim. You’d think maybe Bob Geren would come to the realization that Fuentes is an automatic loss once he’s inserted into the ballgame. But that’s assuming Bob Geren knew how to manage in the first place. Big assumption that one is.
