Cleveland Finds Out How Good They Are This Weekend
I’ll be honest, I don’t follow the Indians all that closely. But when I look at their roster, I have a hard time understanding how they are in first place. Their starting pitching is painfully average. They don’t have an ace on the staff. Perez is an ok closer, I guess–certainly not dominant. And their best hitter (Hafner) hits the bench for this series. I like Michael Brantley a lot, he’s a nice young hitter to watch. All in all, I think our pitching is going to completely shut down the Indians this weekend. They’re going to leave here dazed and confused, wandering through the rest of their inter-league trip racking up the losses……
Weird offensive series for Minnesota. They drop 8 on us in the first inning of Game 1 and then score 3 runs over the next 26 innings……..
Torres needs to get it going this weekend. He was given 2 days off to clear his head and it’s time to start producing. He’s not injured as far as I can tell. Our outfield production is just a joke this year. In fact, if you’re Sabean you could make a case to make a trade for a new starter at the following positions: catcher, shortstop, second base and outfield (maybe 2 outfielders). He might only end up doing a deal to fill one of those slots but it really is discouraging to look at so many gaps in our line up……
Shhh…we got a little rally going. With the aid of the Tribe nonetheless, but it’s a rally.
Torres! Bases juiced! C’mon, Burriss. You’re due!
Good Lord
Funnier than The In-Laws…
Is that Guzman at first?
Nah. Some guitarist
The Tribe has decided to play bocce ball tonight. Thank you. Be sure and attend the John Madden & Steve Mariucci Bocce Ball Tournament in Livermore.
New game.
Think uppercut, Opie…
“Good AB” from the Panda. It’s a new ballgame. I can’t help but think about “Major League” the way the Indians are playing this inning.
Where’s Willie Mays Hayes?!?!?
Great base running there by Torres. Shitty AB by Huff, but no one will remember that. Nice job, Andres.
Win or lose, Torres is POTG. Head’s up base running taking advantage of a Tribe brain fart
Well, good pernt. Flannery had something to do with that as well
Huff has been producing-if Andres is back, it’s those two who fueled the run last year.
Uribe? Posey? Burrell? You’re forgetting a few of the gas attendants……
WTF is Rowand still batting vs the right-hander? Anywho…Hector Sanchez was removed after his first AB for the Grizz tonight.
Moving on up? [cue the Jefferson’s theme]
Fish don’t fry in the kitchen;
Beans don’t burn on the grill.
Took a whole lotta tryin’,
Just to get up that hill.
Me like Sergio
Me too.
Greased up. Another phrase to retire . . .
Oye Como Va!!!!
Stewie!!
Santana with the trifecta.
Stewart! Nice pick off! Or facsimile thereof, according to replays.
On another note…When did the term “Getting greased up in the pen” start.
I know what it means but there’s a certain porn connotation to it
WTF was Pablo thinking? He’s been hangin’ out with Chuck too much…
Mighta got the hand.
Kruk likes to give the close ones to the opposition. Actually, you couldn’t tell from the replay..
Need I remind you, “when the ball beats you, you’re out!”
Burris might as well bunt. He rarely hits it any further than the pitcher’s mound.
ha, true. Sad. I like him but he’s another guy who is super fast who excels in the minors who can’t translate it up here. Michael Bourn was the same way when he first came up. He adjusted and stayed up.
Speaking of the Jeffersons….I remember a moment when Lionel was talking to Meathead. Now, understand, I’m totally with Meathead on a lot of political issues, but one episode he was just coming on too hard with the politics, and Lionel called him on it.
Meathead: “Lionel, I was reading this great article about black rights and discrimination today, and-”
Lionel: “Woh- you’ve been talking about nothing but black rights and discrimination today.”
Meathead: “What do you want me to do? Talk about the weather?!”
Lionel: “You know- black people have weather, too.”
Funny
Two down…
Zumie you have just secured POTVP, at least if I have anything to do with it…..
Who’s this batting? Motherfucker looks like Rondo Hatton
Game
Now that’s what I’m talking about.
“What’chu talkin’ ’bout, Willis?” That’s two black sitcoms we’ve covered. Anyone up for some “Good Times?”
Welcome back Andres . . .
Smoke, mirrors, victory.
Great game. Before I go, one last Peter Falk query.
If Columbo was such a great frikkin’ cop…how come he never made Captain?
Goodnight, Gentlemen (question mark)
underwhelming wardrobe…….
Capt’s sit behind a desk.
Barney Miller made Captain. WTF didn’t Fish ever get promoted beyond Detective? He was long overdue.
You know, I never did like Officer Levitt. Little snot-nosed shit.
I can tell you with absolute certainty, when I read something that starts with “I remember a moment when Lionel was talking to Meathead” I promise and swear on my daughter’s life to read every sentence that comes after that until I fall asleep or pass out.. Gold Zumie, Premium Grade A-1 polished gold…..
A thought just occurred to me. We really need to enjoy these times. This team is so much fun to watch. The once in a generation pitching staff, the un-hittable bullpen. The offense leaves something to be desired, but hey this is a good team. I just think about the niners of the 80’s. Those were legendary teams, and I didn’t take the time to enjoy it. Now, they wallow in mediocrity. These are wonderful times flappers, enjoy them while they are here. They will one day be but a memory.
Good point, Sarge. It IS amazing how they pull out some of these games.
I agree completely. This is it.
I’m surprised more guys don’t go on those tough foul pops.Well, no doubt on POTG, gotta be Nate for the fly ball he caught.,.
Casilla came up big.
Sarge, as much as it will pain me to take down the “Lionel-Meathead” post, it is coming down tomorrow morning and yours is going up. We NEVER stopped to appreciate the Niner dominance of the 80’s and into the mid 90’s SB win. When we were down 3-1 tonight in the 4th (or whatever inning it was) I turned to my friend (who is Yankee fan) and said “No worries, I guarantee we win tonight”. This is just how we do things. The Niner dominance was sexy. We’re like the dude picking up the towels off the gym floor. But goddammit we pick up most of those towels off the goddamn floor………
Flav, I appreciate and am thankful for that Niner dominance each and every second of my life. That’s why I’m so fucking angry and spew hatred at the shit they’ve been trotting out for the past eight years. I’m spoiled.
Alright, my first potd! I’m mostly a lurker, because I often don’t have much to add to the discussion. We usually find a way to pull it out. And aside from madbum’s meltdown on tuesday, I can’t think of very many games that we weren’t in until the last out.
Casilla is the POTG, it’s not even a question……….
You must be kidding., tell me you are.
unquestioned. You still haven’t figured out how this team wins games.
“That’s a Lon (Simmons) pick. Good pick.”
Of course, I’m happy for any and all runs we score. But this shit is less than ‘small ball;’ it’s ‘ya gotta believe’ ball. It’s taking advantage of errors, of mental mistakes, of our speed and intelligence–actually, if you think about it, we are getting a LOT of breaks. But we also have good personnel who do perform in clutch moments–especially relative to other teams. Great all-around game by Torres. Again, as horrible as the offense is, we are indeed, 42-38. Enjoy it, gang.
42-34! what am I saying?! 42-34!
“We are indeed, 42-38.” Isn’t that 42-34?
That’s how unbelievable it is to me Twin! But seriously, before today, we were in the top 5 teams in pitching (ERA); bottom six in offense (OPS); and bottom 8 in defense (fielding %). And somehow we’re 42-34 and the 6th best record. That’s not just great pitching; it’s making a lot out of what little we’ve done offensively, as well as otherwise smart play.
You can change the record all you want. It doesn’t change the FACT that we’re still DEAD LAST in runs scored w/ 261. Put down your Blogucalitor 5000. I’ll do the math; that’s 3.43 runs/gm. You, I, Flav and Chuckles hitting in the meat of the order could score that much. We need help. OUTSIDE help. Please do not lose track of that simple fact.
dude, I can hit……
Dooming after a nice win like this is strictly Sobbbenstein territiory. We’ve heard it, from both of you.Over and over and over.
Obviously Snarkkles kidnapped Flavor. If Torres isn’t POTG, there will be about 12 federal agencies at Craig’s door tomorrow..
Sanchez for Reyes. Yea or nay?
Sanchez can be rehabilitated and Reyes ain’t leaving NY any time this season.
No way. Without Casilla’s stop we lose this game by many.
That is a total fucking ioke,.not even Snarkklefuck would have the gall for that shit.
well, like I said, you don’t seem to get the nuances. If Casilla doesn’t get out of Sanchez’ total fuck up, we are down 6-1 or whatever and there is no comeback………
Bet the Cleveland organization is doing some serious head-scratching after this episode. Drrrty gave em all the walks they could possibly want this evening and they even capitalized on three of them with their three hits. This is not their brand of baseball. Their SP throws a great game, almost as unhittable as Sanchez and doesn’t give up a single BB in his 8 inning C.G. So they got Carlos and they have Santana, but as the name of one guy, we get a big Giants fan. Wonder if the Indians think there’s some Black Magic Woman involved.
Chalk up another piece of successful strategy for Bochy, along with his stellar BP handling. That bit of rest appears to have been just what the doctor ordered for Torres. After the bunt single in his prior AB his dinger had to have been extremely loud. Then to top it with a single amidst that 3-run rally, together with his base running. BigbrainBruce had a good read on this one. Torres is the one guy in the L.U. who can go on a tear. Not saying this is the beginning of one, but seems to me that its been a number of times i’ve monickered him as Torrid Torres. Team is now 42-34 without one single position player having mounted a serious hot streak. Simply amazing.
What more can be said about this bullpen? Four and a third innings and they give up one lousy walk. Not even a bingle, dingle or single. How’s a hard-hitting AL Central team sposta deal with this kinda business?
I mean Cleveland was in such a state of shock that by the Ninth they went down quietly without even letting the Drama Queen foster a bit of excitement. They were clearly flattened by the Giants pen. Very few teams end up winning the game when they are offensively challenged and their starter can’t even go five. There’s a fair chance the relievers will not be outrageously overworked tomorrow with Matt the Horse scheduled to start. Matchup-wise, tonight was the Indians’ best shot, looking over their SP stats. But this is baseball, so you never know for sure. After tonight, though, i like our chances in this series.
Bochy says Sanchez could go to the pen? When Bochy says “could,” you can damn near take shit to the bank. Bochy doesn’t show his hand. He plays it close to the vest. OK, that means one or two things; 1) Zito into the rotation or 2) Sanchez gets traded.
I’ll ask again, Sanchez for Reyes. No hanging Chads please.
when you walk 6 guys a game, trading you for a superstar probably isn’t going to get it done…….
Don’t get so caught up in the glitz of the stats. Baseball is game of moments. Casilla saved the game,….
Obviously you didn’t watch the game. That is totally fucking insane. Casilla got one important out. Torres did it at the plate and the basepaths.-several moments.
I love Andres Torres. Glad to see him bounce back in a BIG way tonight. We need him “back on the beam” from here on out.”
Call me crazy, but I still think Belt provides a spark before this is all said and done…
Belt could take over LF in a nono-second. Who exactly are our 3 regular outfielders?
He would take Shitholtz’s starts.
all right guys, I’m out. Don’t have too many arguments in me tonight. See you tomorrow.
I’d say the odds of Sanchez making his next scheduled start in Chi-town on Wed are 50/50.
As of right now, I’m taking the UNDER.
Torres’ contributions were anything BUT the “glitz of sats”. No one who watched the game could possibly post that nonsense. His baserunning in the 6th was brilliant and won the game, Casilla got an important out but that ain’t POTG material-Flavoro is giving him POTG for not blowing up.. He and the rest of the pen get a pat on the back and maybe Andres will buy him a beer.,.
Now that I actually watched Bochy on the postgame show, wow. Sorry, Sanchez. Your ass is grass. Bochy had a head of steam when he was discussing Sanchez. He was none too happy.
So tell me Flappers, you have a choice. No, I take that back, you have 1/2 a choice. Zito is coming back into your life whether you like it or not. The second part of that equation is where the choice lies…
Sanchez in the pen and purgatory OR trade Sanchez (and whatever else it may take) for Reyes?
Dennis, no one disputes the fact that they’ve scored 261 ones and are last in the majors. What’s amazing is that we’re tied for the 6th best record in baseball. And that has to do with our personnel; even the ‘under-performers’ day-in, day-out play smarter baseball than most of the competition. And that adds up to wins.
And by the way, I just did the math by hand: we scored 3.7 runs per game in April, 3.2 per game in May, and are coming back at 3.4 per game this month. If we get any more production and the pitching holds close to where its at, we will be in good shape. It’s just not easy–or thrilling–to watch.
Meant that to read: ‘it’s just not easy–or its thrilling if you want–to watch.’
Ed, I have no choice in the matter, I have to watch. I’m compelled to watched. Whether the Giants score 3.2, 3.4, 3.7 or 0.0 runs/gm, I’m watching. But let’s be honest here, we need a few bats. If you have a suggestion or two, I’m all ears. You know who I want. I’m actually starting to get a headache because I know what’s coming soon…a Barry Zito start. Hide the women and children.
Ed,dooming is Denny’s act.
It gets real fucking old when it comes before, during, and after every fucking game. With DL time for Panda, Ross, Torres, and out for season Fruckie and Posey- they’re in great shape. And RPG is not the bottom line-W/L is. And they’re a half a game out after all the troubles. As I’ve said-they’ll cruise to the division..
Chew them out Twin!
Casilla should get a save for that one out: VERY BIG!
When I saw a 2 run first and only 2 hits for the game, it had to be a HR.
But that would be like Columbo carrying a blackberry.
RIP Peter Falk
Hey, who was it that said ‘weak division’ to summarise the Giants winning season?
there is not another team in baseball that would have a top 5 record with the handicap this team is carrying.
No one can say, this year, that ‘we are lucky to be injury free’
or ‘our starting five has no weakness’
or ‘it was fate/magic/luck’
goddamnit this team plays to win and I am loving it.
Fair and balanced piece from J.P. Morosi re Sabean and our need for a bat(s) via the trade.

I know the big reluctance to trade away SP, but if I’m Sanchez I’m buying some new luggage…just in case.
No way.
In the 6th @ Belmont today, #6 Giants Play and in the 9th (Mother Goose Stks) #5 Buster’s Ready.
$2 Beers to Win on each. Stay Thirsty, my friend.
Torres is on his game.
