A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Killing Time, Wondering About the A’s

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on January 21, 2012

I’m working on killing off just about 34 more hours. Gonna coach a basketball game. Probably eat a few times. Facebook, blog, etc…

Romo signed and not the one who missed the playoffs (he of a single playoff victory on his resume). Anything under 2 mil is a bargain for his services. If that dude could ever get his head straight with the right closer mind set he could go *Eck* on us. But by his own admission, his head isn’t there yet……

I understand the A’s are getting rid of all their best players so that Wolf can try to break it down to his frat bro Bud that his team can’t succeed in Oakland. And they need to avoid falling on the wrong side of a basement $ number to not get hit with a “We don’t spend enough $” penalty. But they are working on a pretty random trifecta right now. After signing Bartfatso Colon they then picked up Jonny Gomes. Now they’re looking to sign Manny Ramirez to be there DH. Who had those 3 going to the A’s this year?

OK, that paragraph just killed off another 2 minutes. How many hours till game time?

_______________________________________________________________________________

Retro Game of the Day! (Since I referenced them, let’s roll with a *Guest Post* from the A’s. Might be fun to take a look at the AL for a second). It’s July 23rd, 1986 and the A’s are playing the Red Sox in Oakland. 15K showed up. This was back in the day where Oakland could actually outdraw a Giants game every now and again. Dave Stewart was going against Nipper. The A’s handled him easily 9-2.

“20th Century Fox”, f-ing hilarious. Back in the day, we thought berman’s shtick was funny too, and yeah we were often heavily sedated….braves reliever Joe “Leave it to” Boever….
I feel the same way about the Stick too. It was home, it was freezing most of the year even during the daytime, parking sucked on the dirt, a pain to get in and out of, but a thrill none the less. Surviving night games to watch baseball vs. whoever was in town (like Sheffield hammering shots down the line) was just price you paid.
quick shout to the Dawg: the Tecs are rolling. they might be best team on entire left coast west of kansas, including pac-how many ever it is now. Btw, the gordon kid (arron) younger bro of drew is destroying the West cal league single handed as a junior at Mitty. 31 last night vs. SH cathedral on the road, plus he can defend rebound and block shots. Everyone in that league (best besides east bay) knows he is most of what they got, and he still lights them up. going to be a big time D-1 fight over this kid.

Sorry Willie, but me & either of Fly Williams or Ronnie Haigler would’ve destroyed ’em 2 on 2 about 40 years ago.

would have loved to have seen connie hawkins in the rucker league in his day. Even at phoenix, he was just jaw dropping to watch when they came to oaktown.

Always cracked up when June Cleaver would say to Ward……”You were a alittle hard on the Beaver last night.”

Btw,re the mystery of the 4-4— sorry if someone already said this–but the only explanation is the radio guys were referring to only Home games..kezar and the stick.
One win in Chi, 3 other losses were in Texas (2) and Wa (1)
Now I can get some sleep. 🙂

    • Flavor said, on January 21, 2012 at 8:48 am

Solid work St, thanks. Now, if someone can freaking find me a link to TOTAL POINTS SCORED IN THE RED ZONE BY EACH NFL TEAM IN 2011 the I will be able to get some sleep. And I’m not looking for TD % or anything like that. Just total points the teams score once they enter the RZ.

      • Alleykat said, on January 21, 2012 at 9:51 am

Flav…..Don’t have those stats but these are pretty incredible…….Niner opponents average starting field postion 20.8 yard line.
11 Times all season an opponent started a drive in 49er territory. That one reallly impresses me.
Andy Lee led the NFL with a 50.9 avg and a 46.6 yard net.The special team unit allowed returns on only 39 of 78 punts, limiting returners to an 8.1 yrd avg.
David Akers led the league with an NFL record 44 field goals. The Niners kickoff-coverage team saw returns on 47 of 94 kickoffs, and held opponents to a 23.1 return avg.

In fact,no opponent returned a kickoff more than 39 yards this season against the 49ers squad that takes extreme pride in the usually frowned upon assignments.”They do it with enthusiasm tha

        t’s
        second to none,says Akers.”

In fact, no opponent returned a kickoff more than 39 yards this season against this Stud unit. They have alot of pride and.

Even Slusser admits to not knowing what the fuck they are doing with Colon. Why would anyone pay to see this joke of a team… uh wait-they don’t..

    • shaman138 said, on January 21, 2012 at 11:40 am

Yeah, even on a night where everything, including tickets, is two bucks, nobody shows up. That’s how fucking pathetic they are. Plus, half of their so-called fan base is spending all of their time trolling Giants blogs.

    • Nipper said, on January 21, 2012 at 12:02 pm

Tarp over the remaining seats and broadcast the games in the parking lot for the tailgaters.

  4. shaman138 said, on January 21, 2012 at 11:41 am

Let me clarify–you mean Sergio Romo and not asswipe dipshit choker quarterback Romo who plays for an asswipe dipshit choker Dallas football team.

    • Nipper said, on January 21, 2012 at 12:03 pm

Not a Romo fan? He’s cute.

Yahoo and MLB reporting Giants offered Timmy 2 yrs/$40m and Timmy’s side countered w/ 2 @ $44m. They’ll split the diff., more or less and have a deal by Monday, I say.

What team will Lincecum will be pitching for in 2014?

      A. Giants

      C. Yankees
      D. Other

Excellent. That’s what I suggested they do a couple of days ago. Nice to see Sabes reading the blog again 🙂

    • snarkk said, on January 21, 2012 at 1:43 pm

I’d say a two-year deal almost guarantees we won’t see Timmeh in an SF uni after 2013, and possibly during the latter part of 2013 season if the Giants are out of it, and they want to trade him to a contender to get some players. Enjoy him while you can, the Freakshow is not going to last much longer. Baer is already writing the lameass “budget” excuses to the fans for not signing him as a FA…

      • PawlieKokonuts said, on January 21, 2012 at 1:58 pm

I tend to agree, Snarkk, with the timeline, but I’m not sure I’d so readily blame Baer. (I pine for the Bow Tie days and regime.) As long as Timmy does not go to Boston or the Yanks or — gasp — LA, either team. THIS IS CRAZY TALK. Let’s enjoy the here and now and refrain from living in some ridiculous speculative future during Marco Rubio’s first term. Let’s stay g-g-g-rounded, Gigantes faithful.

      • snarkk said, on January 21, 2012 at 2:31 pm

Sorry, Pawlie. My SOP is to readily blame Baer, and ask questions later. Only now it is much more clear he’s the ringmaster/front man for the cheapass billionaire’s club that owns this team…

  6. PawlieKokonuts said, on January 21, 2012 at 1:34 pm

Heck, maybe that means Cody (Ross, not Ransom) will still have a chance of playing w/ us. I’m dreamin’.

  7. Big flavor said, on January 21, 2012 at 1:43 pm

Having lunch at 1/main and Roger Craig was eating behind me. I haven’t seen him in about a year and in this area that’s a pretty unusually long time to go. I’ve never forgiven him for the fumble (his final carry as a Niner) but today I was watching him surreptitiously (he was sitting underneath his framed jersey with a hot chick maybe 25 years old) and I let it all go. I took this RC sighting as a sign we are winning tomorrow. I’m so excited for this game I can hardly stand it…

    • PawlieKokonuts said, on January 21, 2012 at 1:54 pm

cool…and maybe the other Roger Craig will show up, teach you how to toss the ol’ forkball. Maybe he’ll have a 22yo BB.

  8. twinfan1 said, on January 21, 2012 at 2:35 pm

Baer/Sabean will show they have learned the lessons of the past if they refuse to dole out a long term contract to a pitcher, even a cute one. When Tim’s next two years are done, they will have received the best years of his career.

    • snarkk said, on January 21, 2012 at 2:50 pm

      He’s cute?…

      • twinfan1 said, on January 21, 2012 at 3:18 pm

Not my type, especially after the Krispy Creme Double Bacon Cheeseburgers settle in, but some folks like the homeless look…

  9. SanDawg said, on January 21, 2012 at 2:55 pm

..that was Craig’s last carry as a Niner? Ouch. There was a fun fact in the SD paper this morning that Candlestick has hosted the most playoff games of any NFL stadium since the merger. Anyone want to take a stab at the number?
@Willied–I’m going to Aztec game tonight. Amazing what they are doing after losing so many guys from last year’s team. Best record in the country over the past 2 years (50-5) and playing a pretty solid schedule both years. I saw the Chris Herren documentary the other night (thought it was great) and am finally getting around to reading Fall River Dreams. Good stuff. Tark brought FSU and Herren to SD one time shortly after we got our on-campus arena. The place was packed and rocking. I couldn’t take my eyes off Herren. Continually taking it strong to the hole and often wildly pointing and gesturing to the crowd with a smile on his face. I hated the guy as an SDSU fan, but he was something else. Dude hit some low-lows including sleeping in an alley behind AM/PM in Modesto (he’d just been released from jail after a 5 day drug run) when he was supposed to be picking up his wife and kids at the airport in Oaktown.

Timmy is the goose that lays the golden eggs, the straw that stirs the drink, the hardest button to button…I think the Giants will do what it takes to keep him and he’ll still be in Orange and Black in 2014.

    • snarkk said, on January 21, 2012 at 3:02 pm

The Stick is the oldest and most decrepit stadium in the league, so it’s logical that it’s hosted a ton of playoff games…

      • SanDawg said, on January 21, 2012 at 3:06 pm

To borrow an old line from Zumie, “they don’t call you Snarkk for nothing!”
Ok, Ok, I didn’t blow your mind with that bit of trivia, but throw a number out at me.

  10. twinfan1 said, on January 21, 2012 at 3:07 pm

I totally believe that Tim’s people want 6 years. Let somebody else give it to him. I’d go these 2 years plus two more. Signing him for too much money and too long a term because of fan sentiment is not wise business.

    • Nipper said, on January 21, 2012 at 5:23 pm

      Twin likes wise business.

  11. SanDawg said, on January 21, 2012 at 3:17 pm

I’m going to choose to believe that there is someone out there in cyberspace who gives a rat’s ass about my trivia question. Some lone soul in a far-away place that lurks at the Flap and is highly entertained by all of our posts. This person is dying to know the answer to my trivia question. It’s tearing them up inside, they can’t go on—-life is no longer worth living until I illuminate them with this bit of information….

    26. Tomorrow will be the 26th motherfreaking playoff game at Candlestick.

    • Flavor said, on January 21, 2012 at 3:20 pm

NFL is showing a special on the 1994 49ers and ESPN is showing a replay of the 2011 Cowboys game.
I am getting in a Playoff mode with 24 hours to go until the 26th motherfreaking playoff game at Candlestick.
Hanks, Jones, Deion, Rice,Young the list is long they just beat the Cowboys in game 11

This from Castrovince at mlb. give one pause??

“More to the point, the Giants have to look closely at Lincecum’s performance the past two seasons and wonder if he’s trending in the wrong direction. Since 2009, his strikeouts per nine innings have fallen, from 10.42 to 9.79 to 9.12. And his walks per nine have risen, from 2.72 to 3.22 to 3.57.

Perhaps fastball velocity is part of the issue. In Lincecum’s first Cy Young season, 2008, his average fastball was 94.1 mph, according to Fangraphs.com. In 2009, it was 92.4. In 2010, 91.3. Last season it rose to 92.3, but he threw it less often (52.9 percent of the time) than he had in any year previously. His slider and changeup percentages, on the other hand, were higher than they had been at any point in his career.”

    • DJLoo said, on January 21, 2012 at 3:53 pm

We’re all trending in the wrong direction.

    • Flavor said, on January 21, 2012 at 3:58 pm

Well, his hits allowed were right around the same number he had per 9 innings as in both his CY years. I haven’t bothered to check any of his underlying stats.
I think trying to lock him up for 2 years was brilliant and they just might pull it off. If they aren’t contending in 2013 they can move him at the break for something. Not a ton since he’d be a 2 month rental, but they can at least get something (if they’re out of it) instead of just watching him walk away to Seattle for nothing…….

      • willieD said, on January 21, 2012 at 4:30 pm

Why would anyone want to go to Seattle?

  14. DJLoo said, on January 21, 2012 at 4:25 pm

Sure..no big deal. Just move him at the break for something.

    • Flavor said, on January 21, 2012 at 4:32 pm

Loo, your mind might explode trying to compute how many 4th tier players a *Tim Lincecum* would bring us. Lamb, Keppinger, etc.. We could get like 27 of them!

  15. DJLoo said, on January 21, 2012 at 4:43 pm

It’ll never happen. He’ll only be 29, Flav. His dad’ll figure something out . Shit, Warren Spahn won about 300 games after he was 29.

Nate Schierholtz’s wedding announcement was featured in my paper today. Nate tied the knot with Marion Kate Eveland on Saturday, December 3, at Whites Chapel United Methodist Church in Southlake, Texas. Groomsmen included Aaron Rowand, Travis Ishikawa and Kevin Frandsen.

The bride wore a gown by Vera Wang, the Diana, an ivory strapless organza sweetheart gown with tulle draped bodice, swirling tissue organza flange skirt and ivory silk tie at the waist. She wore her mother’s pearls. The bride is a 2004 graduate of Southlake Carroll High School in Southlake, Texas. She played basketball for four at San Diego St. and graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a Bachelor degree in International Business in 2008. I guess we know the brains of that outfit.

The couple spent their honeymoon in Tahiti and will reside in the Bay Area. Word has it that when the bride removed her garter belt and flung it at Nate’s back foot, he missed it.

Yes i would say she has the “Brains”.Cause if Nate had any he would not have the 3 Stooges as his groomsmen.Next your be telling “Whitey” was his best man…..

SDawg- I was just finishing my coursework from Fresno St. to get my teaching license when they hired Tark. It was a really big deal at the time. He had a couple of nice seasons but FSU was hoping to be like “90 UNLV, and it never happend. Herren was a talented PG who sometimes thought he was a 3. There was a documentary/60 min episode, about Herren, and the Fresno St. team, I wanna say in 1997? Not sure. It detailed the mostly the problems that came with hiring Tark as your coach. Anyway, loved the reference to the Bulldogs!

Ah, Willie, you were a little rough on Seattle there. It’s a nice city, with lots of cool qualities to it. One of my favorite places to visit.
It sits next to a breathtakingly beautiful mountain, Mt. Ranier. On the downside, Ranier is a volcano, and, theoretically, could destroy Seattle someday.
