A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Winning Smart, Not Hard………

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 19, 2012

If you subtract the game they got *Jaime’d*, the  Giants have taken 28 walks over their last 3 games. That is outstanding. For years I’ve wanted this team to take walks and for years they go up to the plate hacking at everything they see. I don’t think it’s as much of a philosophical change as much as adding new players who are deciding to take a smart approach to hitting (or walking).

When you have a powerless team that doesn’t really hit for much of a batting average either it’s imperative that you take walks and we’ve seen what happens when we do that. Besides an increased opportunity to score runs it serves another important purpose: it increases the starting pitchers pitch total and gets you into their bullpen earlier in the game. It also will put a pitcher in the stretch and that’s important to do if you’ve got an opposing pitcher who has gotten into too comfortable of a rhythm on the mound.

In short, walks are all good. When I see the Giants taking 8, 9, 10 walks in a game that darn near qualifies as decent porn in my book. And, on that note, on to another topic………

Brad Penny. I might have missed why we signed him and why Bochy says he’s going to be with the team soon. Is he going to take over long relief duty? Because with Mota gone and Edelfsen hopefully gone soon I don’t see where he fits into the scheme of things right now.

Outside of Bowtie not giving his full attention to this epic moment, take a look at this photo of ChiPower. If any of you have a better pic with the trophy I’d like to see it. As it stands, this one wins……

Weatherproof games: Mets at Blue Jays, Braves at Rays, Rangers at Astros and Twins at Brewers.

Sunny skies are going to be all they see this weekend in New York, Cleveland and Detroit, with temperatures reaching the low 80s. Sunday sees cloud cover move into the Philadelphia and Washington areas, but things should remain dry. Southern California will see partly cloudy skies with temperatures in the 70s, while the Bay Area will be in the mid-60s and foggy. Games in Denver and Kansas City might have a few delays, with showers expected on Saturday and a possible Sunday thunderstorm. Chicago will be warm, with 80-degree temperatures, but the chances for a Sunday afternoon thunderstorm are high.

Well, it turns out I won’t be going to the game today. I thought I had bought tickets to this one, but it turns out I didn’t. OK- not my brightest moment. (grin) I had bought a packet of tickets, and thought that was one of the games, but on further review…..doh!
Next up- Sat., June 2nd, against the Cubs.

Is Z now the guy getting the most run support? Seems like last few times out he has had pretty big cushion; btw he and edlefsen almost wasn’t enough.

Flav, who’s going to beat Chi’s pic? Sheesh, Obama let them use the White House as background.

I wasn’t going to say it, but since you did, yeah, WTF? Thanks Chi for getting rid of the first guy since the 1950s that knew what the fuck he was doing.

Yes, walks are good for so many reasons.

Penny can turn out to be a key move for an already solid pitching staff.

Chi, Nice pic. Classiest trophy in sports.

    • chipower9 said, on May 19, 2012 at 10:58 am

Absolutely the best trophy. Once IN the Capitol for the actual viewing they were adamant about not touching it. Outside? I got my grimy mitts all over that bad boy! It was awesome!

  6. Bozo said, on May 19, 2012 at 8:18 am

Not only taking walks but making them pay. Pagan taking second with a SB, Blanco scoring from first on the drive to the gap and the Zit man helping his cause with the bases juiced RBI BB. The other thing that was nice to see was the situational hitting. Except for Edelfsen serving it up, this was not a bad little game at all. Oh yeah, props to Boch on an inspired LU.

At first glance i thought that might be our first ever Loo sighting…Then I remembered how tall Bow Tie really is.

  8. Wilcojoe said, on May 19, 2012 at 8:26 am

Btw, is todays game one of the Fox games of the week? They black those fuckers out on the MLB package.

    • Bozo said, on May 19, 2012 at 8:36 am

Wilco, I think Fox is taking the late game(s). Wouldn’t that be great if the rest of the teams, not being shown on FOX, could play a Saturday DAY game. I was looking at the MLB games for today and it looked to me that the Giants game will be shown.

  10. twinfan1 said, on May 19, 2012 at 8:51 am

Of course it’s not a change in policy, as far as ex-hackers turning into patient hitters. As I noted last night, they now have 5 hitters with good OBPs, guys that will take a walk- that wasn’t taught anymore than they teach hitters to hack away. Pagan was interviewed after the game, he said he’s started taking more pitches now. He’s the only one who altered his approach, but it’s not new- for some bizarre reason known only to Angel, he chose to swing early and often when he was lkeading off. He’s started to become more patient since he was moved to the middle of the LU. Btw, wer are now 6th in NL BA, 7th in OBP, still 10th in runs- but the offense is definitely improving, as expected. Posey , Melky, Blanco, Belt, and Pagan are all playing regularly and 3 are new, Belt new as to playing regularly. If there’s a policy change it’s that they acquired some more “disciplined” hitters, nobody was turned into one.

in honor of the b-day of one my heroes, here’s hoping Sf can win today, “by any means necessary.”
maybe chi’s pic is new flap s-d goddess (minus tits). How tall is Nukes anyway?

    • Wilcojoe said, on May 19, 2012 at 9:20 am

I am 6’2″ and when i got my picture with him at the Astros game last year, he was a good 1-2 inches taller…Rail thin as well.

      • chipower9 said, on May 19, 2012 at 10:21 am

Yeah, well I’m all of 5’6″ boys. He is tall. Incredibly down to earth. We chatted for quite a while…and you can tell he is a hard-core passionate fan

  12. manny said, on May 19, 2012 at 9:16 am

The patience shown by the hitters lately has been a most pleasant surprise, especially after the hacktastic last few years of watching the team. Here’s hoping that FOX’s broadcast tonight enables us MLB package users to get the game today. Do any of the other old times remember when The Sporting News was like 85 percent about baseball, this was back in the 60’s. I remember buying it for a quarter and reading it from front to back ever week.

    • James said, on May 19, 2012 at 10:05 am

I used to know the line ups of the AAA teams courtesy of the Sporting News back in the early 70s. My favorite subscription, along with Baseball Digest.

Sure Manny…..When I was a kid, I had a subscription – always went right to the Giant article first. Usually arrived on Friday.

      • Del Mar Dennis said, on May 19, 2012 at 11:07 am

I set my alarm clock for early this AM to make sure I was up to see the best thoroughbred in training make his triumphant return at Newbury. Frankel did not disappoint. I’m a sucker for the equine.

      • DJLoo said, on May 19, 2012 at 11:18 am

No, I like the Preakness, DMD. It’s a real horse race. But they should change with the times and move it back a week – then run the Belmont 4 weeks after…

      • Del Mar Dennis said, on May 19, 2012 at 11:42 am

Loo, I reluctantly agree with your new proposed Triple Crown schedule. But that by no means reflects my true feelings on the Sport of Kings. Screw getting with the times. They need to turn back the clock. But I’m not going to (Aaron) harangue on this glorious racing day. I’ll just wish you the best of luck.

    • chipower9 said, on May 19, 2012 at 10:23 am

Yep…I remember those days well. Damned rag is worthless now in comparison to back in the day.

  13. James said, on May 19, 2012 at 10:08 am

If the Giants finish 7th in OBP, the division should be ours. Still, they are 7th in runs allowed because of the crappy D, and as much as I’m amazed and overjoyed to see all of those runners on base, OPS is an absolute index. There’s little chance this group of players goes much higher than 7th in OBP, so they need to boost the SP. I think that will happen — Posey, Pagan, Melky and Belt are collectively due for a few HRs, and certainly the return of Pablo will help in the longer run.

    • twinfan1 said, on May 19, 2012 at 11:41 am

They’re 9th in OPS. I think what I was *trying* to point out was not they were the ’27 Yankees, but that the offense’s offensiveness has been greatly exaggerated. And as James points out, it will get better still. The defense has also improved- when Tim gets straightened out and they come up with acceptable long relief, they’ll be just fine. Penny, though? I don’t know about that. Hacker would be OK and he’d be available for spot starts.

  14. chipower9 said, on May 19, 2012 at 10:15 am

Flav – I agree re: the walks. Actually the team’s BA is not awful (.258) which is 6th in the NL. Runs? Another story…10th in the NL.

Good game last night. Zito should have been given more rope, and from what I read, Bochy agrees.

Belt had a nice game, and how about Pa(not)GONE in the clean-up with 3 walks.

Looking to extend that home winning streak today. Thanks for posting the pict, Craig.

    • chipower9 said, on May 19, 2012 at 10:25 am

    No real surprises today:

    Blanco RF
    Crawford SS
    Cabrera LF
    Posey C
    Pagan CF
    Belt 1B
    Arias 3B
    Burriss 2B
    Vogelsong

    • Del Mar Dennis said, on May 19, 2012 at 12:05 pm

The fact that Burriss is still allowed to don a major league uni is a surprise to me.

      • mrmrbill said, on May 19, 2012 at 12:17 pm

I don’t necessarily disagree, but your current depth chart choices are … Cluberson or Creative Cause.

For the record, I thought I was managing my FL DL and have not been. Not really. I figured putting someone on the bench was just as good or the same as DL — UNTIL you have to activate someone, such as Chris Young. Ugh.

2B Dilemma Update: “Ryan Theriot expects to be activated from the disabled list when eligible in Miami on Thursday. Right now, Charlie Culberson and Emmanuel Burriss are platooning. What happens when Theriot returns? “It’ll be competitive,” Bochy said. ‘I’ll leave it at that.'”

The 2B future’s so bright, ya gotta wear shades. Or simply avert one’s gaze.

    • Bozo said, on May 19, 2012 at 1:13 pm

Unless they’re able to trade Burriss I imagine Culberson goes back to Fresno. If nothing else because Burriss is out of options and Culberson is not.

  22. Flavor said, on May 19, 2012 at 1:14 pm

Horse racing fans (Denny and Loo). I think Bodemeister is pretty beatable today with I’ll have Another and Creative Cause. Everyone is down on I-H-A because he just rolled into that insane pace set by Bode and ate him up in the end but his T-graph figs are the shit and I think he wins today. I also have teeth of the Dog and Went the Day Well in my triples but I only have I-H-A and CC in my pick 4’s (which I just started with a 9-1 shot I might add 🙂 )

    • Del Mar Dennis said, on May 19, 2012 at 1:19 pm

Sorry, Flav. Maybe it’s me, but I’m a little confused by your post. Just who do you like?

      WIN?
      PLACE?
      SHOW?
      SUPERFECTA?

      • Flavor said, on May 19, 2012 at 1:47 pm

I don’t play W/P/S. And I haven’t bet my super yet but it will heavily include #8 in the 3/4 spot.
I have I-H-A and CC spotted in my pick 4 (just got through leg 2 but it was the heavy fav and I had 5 horses) and I’ve got the same 2 in the triple (which will now be worth very little) but I’ve added the #2 and the #5.
But if I had to just pick a single horse I’d probably go with the 9.
If Bodemiester wins I lose on all my tickets….

      • Del Mar Dennis said, on May 19, 2012 at 2:26 pm

Okie-Doak. I agree that I’ll Have Another (Despite his second-choice odds) IS the most likely winner. HOWEVER, Bodemeister IS the fastest horse of them all. Now. Do you believe he’ll bounce off his previous efforts, or do you think there’s still something left in the tank?

I can see Bode winning by 5 or running up the track. I’ve let it be known on previous occasions for my predilection when it comes to Bob Baffert. I like Bob. I know Bob. Not that well. I don’t expect to invited to any birthday parties anytime soon, but I always wish Bob well.

And I will wish Bob well again today in the Preakness…Go Bode Go!

      • Flavor said, on May 19, 2012 at 3:41 pm

well since I threw him out of everything, I obviously thought he would bounce off the Derby. However, I will TAKE what I got–pick 3 and pick 4. Not the worst thing in the world I did today. And for I-H-A to close on that slow ass pace I am thinking, for like the 3rd or 4th time in the last 20 years, that we might FINALLY have a triple crown winner!!!!!!!

  23. Del Mar Dennis said, on May 19, 2012 at 1:15 pm

  55. zumie said, on May 19, 2012 at 3:35 pm

Gotta give Burriss some credit. He started the rally with his infield hit.

  56. Del Mar Dennis said, on May 19, 2012 at 3:35 pm

Looks like our Giants are well on their way to their 11th straight win at AT&T vs the A’s.
I’ve always said baseball comes down to matchups. Who’s our schedule maker?
More home games with the A’s please.

  57. twinfan1 said, on May 19, 2012 at 3:39 pm

Pagan’s hitting has now tipped the scales in his favor, he’s overcome his defense- which has also improved….. While Vungo is going feet up (2 for 31)…

    • zumie said, on May 19, 2012 at 3:40 pm

Pagan was a disaster as a lead-off hitter. He’s found a comfort zone lower in the order. And fortunately, Blanco has emerged as a viable lead-off hitter.

  58. Wilcojoe said, on May 19, 2012 at 3:41 pm

They gonna let Vogey go the distance? I think so.

    • Wilcojoe said, on May 19, 2012 at 3:43 pm

      Nevermind

      • Wilcojoe said, on May 19, 2012 at 3:45 pm

Forgot that I had paused the game for the race…

      • zumie said, on May 19, 2012 at 3:46 pm

I was wondering about the lag there. (grin)

  59. Bozo said, on May 19, 2012 at 3:49 pm

    Nail it down, Hensley.

    • Del Mar Dennis said, on May 19, 2012 at 3:54 pm

We brought in Hensley in a NON-save situation? Close your eyes. 😀
      As I speak, it’s a double play…3-6-1. I like those.

      • Bozo said, on May 19, 2012 at 3:58 pm

That whole Closer by committee really screws up the stats, huh Del?

      • twinfan1 said, on May 19, 2012 at 4:01 pm

Huh? You’ve now gone totally insane- Hensley is not the closer. The smiley face doesn’t save you from using your NON-save spiel in a NON-spiel situation. Who did you want? Huff?

      • Del Mar Dennis said, on May 19, 2012 at 4:20 pm

Bozo, you got me on that one. But , hey! You and I still need to consummate on whether a team should bring in their closer in a NON-save situation or not.

I’m on my way to the Deli to p/u the cold cuts. You, my clown friend, make me laugh. So does bringing in a closer in a NON-save situation.

For what it’s worth, I learned from the best…

Excellent Vogel, excellent win, Giants baseball.

  64. Del Mar Dennis said, on May 19, 2012 at 3:58 pm

    Ballgame!

Jesus H. Christ. We’re pretty good, but the A’s are pretty much that more worse…THEY SUCK!!!

    • Nipper said, on May 19, 2012 at 4:38 pm

      Toast to a win!

  65. snarkk said, on May 19, 2012 at 4:09 pm

40th game today. Not everything worked out yet, still questions related to the injured and if/when they come back as in Franchez and Panda. But, I think they’ve figured out Blanco should leadoff, and Pagan is clearly better off down the lineup. Those alone are real progress towards a collective offensive comfort zone. Nice game…

  66. PawlieKokonuts said, on May 19, 2012 at 4:12 pm

caught the end of the game
like the way we are rolling
why all the fedoras in the crowd?

    GO GIANTS!

  68. willieD said, on May 19, 2012 at 5:55 pm

watching blanton throw BP to the Red Sox (4 bombs in 4 plus)…Rox were down 9-0 at home to the Mariners (!) after the kid Friedrich got lit up and lose 10-3….Kennedy of dbs down 5-0 to the royals….Giants fans really are spoiled by pitching quality and depth as Vogs continues to dominate.

  69. Flavor said, on May 19, 2012 at 6:07 pm

So who’s gonna be the first Flapper to say Zito is *back*? Has he ever *been*? He’s had stretches of starts (like the beginning of the 2010 season) but he seems to be *hanging around* respectability this season. I ask you, do you believe? I tossed my "I believe" Zito shirt into the sea a long, long time ago….
So of those remaining shirt-owning-non-shirt-throwing into the ocean fans…..what you say?

    • blade3colorado said, on May 19, 2012 at 6:29 pm

I thought it was the worst contract the Giants ever consummated before the ink was dry on the contract he signed. That being said, some people use “hate” to describe their feelings for Barry. For me, that’s going too far. My opinion only, but hate (for anything, anyone, anyplace) is extreme. In short, I try not to let negative feelings “rent” my brain.

I hope he continues to pitch well.

    • mrmrbill said, on May 19, 2012 at 6:31 pm

If he’s still pitching like this in July ….. until then, I remain: http://www.demoties.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/01.18-2.jpg

  70. Wilcojoe said, on May 19, 2012 at 6:40 pm

    Dare we say contract extension?

    • blade3colorado said, on May 19, 2012 at 6:42 pm

      HAHAHAHAHAHAHA . . . Let’s not get carried away Wilco 🙂

    • Flavor said, on May 19, 2012 at 7:34 pm

There’s a 7 million dollar buy out in ’14 that could get passed on…

  71. dirtnrocksnomo said, on May 19, 2012 at 7:21 pm

Zito is getting closer to 95 innings which results in me winning an office pool. Only then will he be backnot respectable in my mind. My winnings will consist of steak, lobster and talking endless shit at my “colleagues” for their lack of faith.

    • Flavor said, on May 19, 2012 at 7:39 pm

That’s a pretty *specific* office pool. What else you guys got going? O/U on number of times Pagan wears the “I’m sexy and I know it” tee shirt after games? O/U on snot rockets Bum sends into orbit? I’ve got lines on both of those, by the way, hit my email for some action…

  72. dirtnrocksnomo said, on May 19, 2012 at 7:41 pm

Haha. Just the O/U on 95 innings.
