A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Baseball Shmaseball

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 20, 2013

Sorry guys, but the British Open has just been consuming me–haven’t been able to even think about baseball. And with the Eddie Read going off later today, it’s probably now or never for a baseball thread.

I was bummed that Jimenez fell back today. It was to cool seeing a 49 year old man leading the British Open after 36. And with Tiger near the top this is shaping up as the most exciting Sunday’s in recent majors history. I can’t wait.

I popped a new Anna up just to keep the good vibes of the 2nd half headed in the right direction.

Good idea for the Anna pic.

golf at The Open is a cracker, too. That Woods guy is pretty good.

    some info on the course:
East Lothian is one of the best regions for golf in Scotland, The 2013 Open Championship course at Muirfield, and Musselburgh one of the world’s oldest, where golf has been played since 1672. At Muirfield the looped layout means that the wind differs at every hole.

Scotland’s Golf Coast Road provides easy access for visitors and short journeys between courses. No time is wasted…just EAT, DRINK, SLEEP and GOLF.

We differ greatly in our opinion of golf.
    —–
Somehow, for some reason it’s hard to ignore Wheeler when he’s pitching. He didn’t have a stellar outing today, but he got big outs when he had to, and kept his team in the ballgame while he was in there, which wasn’t even five innings, and the Mets are about to win, it looks like.

    Today’s non-controversial post…

My odds to win the The Open:

    Westwood 5-2
    Woods Even Money
    Mahan 9-2
    Scott 7-5
    Cabrera 7-2
    Johnson 5-2
    Stenson 8-1
    Moore No Chance
    Mickelson 9-2
    Molinari 8-1

Yes, I know of Tiger’s record when behind after 3 rounds in a Major. This is a great leaderboard, but I’m with Craig on being bummed that Jimenez fell back today. Whoever wins, there will be a terrific story. I was kinda fond of Cabrera-Bello just for the swell name.

A Stew sighting today. The Yanks are at a pivotal moment in their season. They’re like a boxer with wobbly feet, trying to hang on, and avoid getting put away.

  5. zumiee said, on July 20, 2013 at 1:56 pm

And, yes, we’re all shocked, shocked I tell you, that the Fox game today is Yankees/Red Sox. Gee, I wonder what the ESPN game will be tomorrow….

What’s so awesome about the Open is unbelievable number of balls, from guys in the lead, that roll into those sick traps. And the way they play the sand once in there is brilliant, it’s almost like they’d prefer to be in there.

    • salty said, on July 20, 2013 at 5:03 pm

      So true.

And yet disaster can strike at any moment. Westwood known for blowing it but damn, Brits are in a roll winning the US Open Wimbledon Tour France, so maybe its his year. Or maybe he’ll pull a Van de Velde.

Just to be fair, Alex Rios hit a GS and drove in 5 runs today. Peavy got the W, 6 innings 7 hits 4 runs but only 2 earned…qualified start I guess.

just like last night, two out rbi in first. Nice job from Sandoval.
Aren’t DBax supposed to be well stocked in young pitching? Given that you are starting guys like miley cyrus and ian kennedy, and your pen includes Hernandez Bell and putz, they either have to bring someone up or go get more pitching.

So if the Giants resign Pence, will they start selling a Marty Feldman goggle-eyed hat?

  14. James said, on July 20, 2013 at 7:19 pm

I wonder if any team has ever made all 3 outs in an inning on tag plays at home.

  15. zumiee said, on July 20, 2013 at 7:23 pm

With none out, Sandoval doesn’t have to run on the wild pitch. There could be some accounting for the ballpark, with the short distance to the backstop, and how fastballs can bounce right back to the catcher, and Sandoval’s not a fast runner. It’s not like Sandoval and Flannery haven’t seen the ballpark for a bunch of years.

looked like the last word affeldt said was, “..pop.” Like he heard or felt something near groin go.
Awesome job done by Mijares. Whoever loses this game is gonna lament missed opps–both teams have had chances to do more than 4-2.

  24. xoot said, on July 20, 2013 at 9:12 pm

My god, how many hand injuries can one team endure?

This guy Rosario is pretty interesting. He has been reliable out of the pen. You see how he got to SF? He’d pitched very few mlb innings when, last October, Miami waived him and Boston picked him up. A month later, Boston traded him to Oakland for a player to be named later. Then in December Oakland waived him and Boston picked him up again. Two days later, Boston waived him and the Cubs picked him up. Finally, just before Christmas 2012, the Cubs waived him and the Giants picked him up. All of that after stagnating for some 8 years in the Miami system.

Relievers throw so few innings, they can have a few unlucky stretches like Affeldt, and look they are very different pitchers from season to season, even when their stuff is unchanged.

  31. unca_chuck said, on July 20, 2013 at 10:16 pm

Got to feel pretty good with Bummie going tomorrow. Posey’s blast couldn’t have come at a better time, what with the plays at home the inning before. All they have to do is take it as they come. Lots of division games coming up, so it won’t be hard to make up ground.

  32. unca_chuck said, on July 20, 2013 at 10:18 pm

Yeah, it was obvious Affeldt said “I felt something pop” He;s likely on the DL tomorrow. Just heard Rosario’s x-rays came back negative for his fingers.

Stranger than fiction – Astros left-hander Erik Bedard no-hit his former Mariners team for 6 1/3 innings on Saturday, but wound up the losing pitcher on a strange night when Seattle pulled out a 4-2 victory despite managing just one hit and striking out 15 times. Too funny . . . 🙂

    • willedav said, on July 21, 2013 at 7:24 am

I had to look it up but I remember a guy named Steve Barber did this for Orioles. April 30 1967, he went 8 and 2/3 with a no no, was replaced by Stu Miller (of SF fame) who got final out, but O’s lost 2-1 to Detroit. Dang, you no hit the other guys and still lose?

    I did not expect that.
    Congratulations Phil Mickelson.
One thing about the courses played for The Open: you won’t see scores like 14 under. Said the announcers: “For a lot of golfers who play this course going into the rough is like a water hazard.”

  41. willedav said, on July 21, 2013 at 11:10 am

Doesn’t look good for the Nats trying to avoid getting swept at home by LA. Kemp homered and they lead 3-0 top 2nd, with Nats (who have scored 3 runs in 2 games of the series so far) facing Kershaw.
Oh f…Hanley just hit a two out 3 run bomb and it’s 6-0.
SF wins today and LA takes over first.

  43. zumiee said, on July 21, 2013 at 12:35 pm

Nobody would have given Pablo any grief for not running home on that wild pitch. The thing rocketed right back to the catcher. Pablo could have started down the line, realized it was too close a play to go on with none out, gone back to third, and everything would have been fine. There’s a fine line between “aggressive” and “just run until you get thrown out.”

  44. zumiee said, on July 21, 2013 at 1:02 pm

As they mentioned in the pre-game show, every win by the Giants gets Bochy a little closer to the Hall of Fame.
Maybe I’m one of the few that thinks this way (or not), but I think Posey will catch for many years into the future because he knows that he can make it to the Hall of Fame as a catcher.

    • willedav said, on July 21, 2013 at 1:08 pm

I just think Posey likes doing it, and C is a position of control (unlike 1b or LF)–perfect spot for a take charge type of guy. Sure it’s physically draining but I’m guessing he plays through stuff and hates coming out of the LU.
Man, couple rockets off Bum early—hope SF can get a few of their own today.

Why do you send a very slow Buster home, when there’s no outs and you need just one run to tie? Stooopid move by Flannery…

  50. zumiee said, on July 21, 2013 at 2:56 pm

A huge mistake by Flannery, and ridiculous for Krukow to cover up for it.

  51. willedav said, on July 21, 2013 at 2:59 pm

Too bad, that was another rocket by Sandoval, who looks like he is regaining stroke.
Didn’t care too much for the ABs that followed–another dribbler by Pence up 3-0, and a first pitch pop out by belt vs. the new reliever. Great game by Bum so far, too, tho he has been in difficulty.

  52. zumiee said, on July 21, 2013 at 3:05 pm

That tag-out on Posey was similar to the play in the World Series when Fielder got thrown out at home. Sure, great plays by the defenders, but lousy job by the thirdbase coach. NO reason to be sending the runner in that situation.

    • PawlieKokonuts said, on July 21, 2013 at 3:10 pm

I would never have sent Posey, who is almost Benjie-esque slow. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. No outs. And DJLoo emailed me. Sends his regards.

      • zumiee said, on July 21, 2013 at 3:15 pm

The play was bad enough, but it makes it even more frustrating hearing Krukow defend it because Flannery’s his buddy. That’s a disservice to the viewers.

    • willedav said, on July 21, 2013 at 3:28 pm

Pennington, a guy who has been at or near Mendoza line last season and this, did make a helluva throw from short LCF to the plate. AZ is a good defensive team.
Giants have played pretty good D this series too, esp in the OF

  60. zumiee said, on July 21, 2013 at 4:15 pm

I was blanking out on the firstbase coach’s name…..Roberto Kelly. Lousy job by Flannery and Kelly today. Sheesh, how often does a firstbase coach get to make a big call to a player, and Kelly wimped out and just went into statue mode.

    • zumiee said, on July 21, 2013 at 4:17 pm

Not to excuse Tenaka. Terrible decision on his part. But he didn’t have any help from his coach there.

  61. manny said, on July 21, 2013 at 4:16 pm

I for one would just as soon take my chances with Francoeur out in left and let Tanaka just try his hand at pinch hitting. His ” Punch and Judy” hitting isn’t worth his miscues out in left field.

“This team now seems incapable of a come from behind win.” The Giants have had more than their share of come from behind wins this year, especially if you include trailing after 6. Even crappy teams have great records when leading after 7. And the best teams usually win a very small number of games in the 8th or 9th.

You probably already knew that, but just in case the reminder helps rein in the “BLEEPS!”

    • salty said, on July 21, 2013 at 5:13 pm

FOX Sports’ Jon Paul Morosi and Ken Rosenthal report that the Athletics are one of the teams that Cubs are talking to about Matt Garza. The A’s hadn’t been mentioned previously as a possible contender in the Garza sweepstakes, but that’s evidently changed. The Cubs and Rangers hit a snag in their talks, but they’re probably still the favorites to land the righty. The Red Sox, Diamondbacks, Cardinals and Indians have also expressed interest in Garza.

    No Giants interest. LOL.

I do not expect MadBum to win every game. Tonight with some of his pitches up and some of the calls close but not in his favour? HE ONLY ALLOWED ONE RUN. (OK, calm down, just a game, men playing with sticks and balls, take a breath)
With Posey, Panda, Pence we have 3 guys that can carry a team. With a strong second tier of Scooter, Belt, Crawford, Blanco, Yungo and Tanaka it is not a bad looking offense. there is no bench to speak of. It does seem like all those come back strong, we’re gonna get ’em games are distant fading memories. Fickle Fate of Fan-dom.
Our defense has been better. Tanaka is a 31 year old second baseman from Japan, not an outfielder. A different skill set in general and there are no SF-like ballparks where he’s played before. Putting Posey at first base weakens the D. The middle guys AND the bench guys are having an off year, so far, sub-par defense on a team that likes to have defense.
And we have had the injuries (whose lack we were grateful for the last three years; Wilson/Pablo/Posey the exceptions). Casilla, the admiral, voggy, panda, jeremy, arias has made us play this season like a lot of other teams. Add to that the mysterious disappearance of our team leader, the horse and it is easy to see why this team’s most important piece has been struggling, despite the best efforts of ANNA & ROMO.

    BRING BACK THE MOJO
    GO GIGANTES!

    • Nipper said, on July 22, 2013 at 6:55 am

LF is a graveyard this season. One would think that LF can pop out of the trees, but for the Giants it’s a problem that just cannot be overcome. Using a second baseman from the minors in LF shows desperation and weakness. Would St. Louis do that? I don’t think so. Upper management should be looked at more closely. Who’s really making the personnel decisions and why can’t he or they make better ones

  69. willedav said, on July 22, 2013 at 7:07 am

Last game hurts, but team played AZ, division leader, very well this weekend. Sandoval hit one about as far as possible yesterday without getting an HR, and Ross beat them with two rbis with a bloop hit to RF. Too many mistakes doomed them. Pitching was pretty good all weekend, and we held Golds down until yesterday.
7 more at home before SF goes on the road. Giants have played the division very well and have been tough at home, so I’d expect nothing less than 4-5 out of this 7, hopefully gaining at least a game or 2 on leaders. But real test will be the road trip, where Giants have not played very well except in last series vs. SD. Pick it up on road you can stay in it…play like before, no chance.
