A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Flannery Takes the Blame–Hard

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 22, 2013

I was surprised to read Flannery’s complete-across-the-board mea culpa for sending Buster home in the 6th inning yesterday. I mean, if you want to adhere to NEVER sending a runner home with no outs unless you’re certain he will score then there really isn’t much to discuss. And I don’t have a huge problem with that perspective.

But a couple of things make it hard for me to skewer Flannery (the way he’s being skewered on Twitter):

1: He was out by 3 inches. The relay home had to be perfect. Unfortunately, it was.

2: the Giants haven’t been scoring runs. Who among us can’t envision a scenario where Buster gets stranded at 3rd? No one should be raising their hands…..

3: this is a little tough to see and I’ll agree this is open to interpretation. But Buster sure looked like he was running with the expectation that he was going to be held up at 3rd base. He turns on the gas as he’s rounding 3rd and he sees that Flann is sending him. If Buster’s running hard the whole way he scores…..

To me, Tanaka’s blunder in the 9th was much worse in terms of calculation of risk as well as not really running all out to get to 2nd. Maybe he thought he was all good but that dude is FAST, he likely would have been safe if he gunned it from the beginning of his decision to go all the way to the bag. I’m not certain of this, but I don’t even think he slid into 2nd base (although maybe he did). He did not look like he was approaching the bag with a sense of urgency (to me) that indicated a player who knew where the ball was (other than that it was *somewhere* behind him)……

But I recognize that getting thrown out at the plate is significantly worse than getting thrown out at 2nd base…..

So what do you guys think?

Since baseballs’s out., hey Eddd, any chance the Brits do away with the whole king and queen shit? Think the unknown ruler will even get the chance to rule the realm? The Chuckster’s been waiting for ages.

The Brits love their monarchs, their confrontational democratic system and their relatives. I am sure they would welcome a benign uncle to rule the realm. Scotland is trying to gain independence and a job may be open. How do you look in a kilt. Any piping experience?

I heard the first inning, first batter get on with a blown play by Blanco. I figured that was a bad omen, the Giants seem to play bad D for Tim this year. After dinner in the Thai restaurant, I came out to the car to hear this disaster. The Reds have 3 HRs, and Blanco was trying to get on with a “slug bunt”. Great. Now, they bunt. I think Bochy may have lost this team somewhere, they play alot like they’re looking at their rings. Gud night…

It’s all about PEDs and Reds today.

Top of the fifth, down 8-0. Bedtime for Bozos.

For fuck’s sake, can they hold the Reds to a zero for one inning?

  6. unca_chuck said, on July 22, 2013 at 8:48 pm

Blehhh. Every time I start to think they’re coming around, they lay a big steamer in the middle of the road. THe good teams aren’t even getting a fight out of us.

Can the D-Backs come back, down 3-2 to the Cubs, and deny the Dodgers firstplace for at least one more day?

75 pitches through 8 for Arroyo? Shit,

    • Macdog said, on July 22, 2013 at 9:00 pm

It’s only the 6th, though I wish it were thru 8.

Again, I call upon the pride of the offense to seize this pooprtunity and not to step in it.

rise up and score; Braun may have some extra he doesn’t need

Well, I’m not giving up. Never will. I’m just going to take a little diversion and check into the game an inning or two or three from now. To see how this fucking half assed effort turns out.

    Time for a shutdown inning.

8-6-7-5-3-0-9. Hit song or the box score of the Reds tonight?

Pffft! So much for the big rally.

  16. Macdog said, on July 22, 2013 at 9:40 pm

    A zero for the Reds!

Well screwed the dog on that one!! Could smell the stink all the way here in Sacramento!! PU that reeks!! Well Chi you warned me about Timmy have 1 good game and then went right back to old ways! With that said…a shut out by a guy that has high 80’s fast ball?? Are you kidding me!! The offense stunk up the place worst than Timmy!! IMHFO.

How does someone pitch a no hitter, then follows that gem with this steaming pile of shit? 3.2 innings, 9 hits, 8 runs, 19.64 ERA, and 2.73 WHIP. The baseball Gods are pulling our collective chain. Sigh.

    • Nipper said, on July 23, 2013 at 2:35 am

Shit happens. I’m waiting for some perspective from Willie D when he wakes up and after he brews his coffee.

I can’t believe how many balls he left up in the zone.. It was almost like BP. It’s time the Giants turn it around, or else we’re going to see what a lot of us are already expecting. Cap’t obvious.

Nip, got nothing for ya except Dennis Farina highlights from Get Shorty and Out of Sight, two Elmore Leonard tales. Those 2 AM posts scare me. Maybe pick up some old Tony Hillerman Chee/Leaphorn novels.
Seriously tho, listened to part of first and Miller lamented Lincecum unable to get calls on close pitch that resulted in 3-2 walk to Bruce. Then he hangs the slider to Frazier, Miller said Andres appeared to misjudge it, and everything went downhill from there.
Not easy to sweep a DH, tho it will be interesting to see which of the 80 plus fastball lefties does better today, Z or Surkamp. Giants are gonna have to pick it up vs. everyone not in NL West.
Yankees GM lamented fact that good bats seem pretty hard to find these days, so getting a decent replacement parts for OF isn’t likely til off season. And how many do you replace?

    • Nipper said, on July 23, 2013 at 9:43 am

Giants offense scares me. I can live with the pitching.

  22. unca_chuck said, on July 23, 2013 at 12:31 pm

Neither pitching matchup thrills me today. Surkamp? We’ll see if one of the two soft-tossers can get it done. Zito is strong at home, but Reynolds is a journeyman. The dreaded no-namer that usually throws a beautiful game against us.

Time to start hitting, regardless. The pathetic effort yesterday was just that. Arroyo? Blehhhhh.
