38 Years Between Double Headers……
As I forage on in my attempt to watch ย the entirety of this double header I’m remembering the first double header I ever attended. And since I can’t remember another one that I went to or saw, today’s will be the second double header that I’ve seen from start to finish. The first one, as many of you know, was the first game I ever went to live. My dad took me to the August 24th, 1975 double header and Halicki threw a no hitter. I just looked that box score up for the first time ever. I can’t remember a single thing about the other game and discovered tonight that the no-no was actually the second game of the day. That completely sucks balls, I have always told people that the first game I ever went to was a no hitter. ๐ฆ Here’s the box score, interesting that not only were there no pitching changes but no position changes or pinch hitters either (for the Giants).
Chris Speier is in the Reds dugout tonight…..

So let’s fast forward 38 years and someone try to answer this one: The Giants have called on Kickham and Surkamp for 4 spot starts this year (Kick 3, Surk 1). They have combined to pitch 14 innings in those 4 starts and given up 23 earned runs. That is almost unbelievable failure. Petit came in and went 5.1 innings and 2 ER’s. How is it that the Giants brass came together 4 times and each time picked a pitcher from AAA that could not have pitched worse? Was Petit ever considered to make a spot start? We all know he’s not a prospect but how could the Giants casually pass him by so so easily and lamely pick Kick and Surk? Bad judgement and even worse upper minor league pitching depth…….
Ok, back to finish the bbq, another beer, I’ll take some deep breaths and fire off a few “Serenity now’s” and go back to the couch for Game 2…..

Agree BF…The Giants and Reds had a special exempt addition for this game a 26th roster spot.Though I don’t believe Petit is on the 40 man roster,he was allowed to come up for this DH.Yeah I would of “Chucked” him in there in the 1st game start, IF for no other reason just to show- case him in a package deal.Unless they send Big Sur-Camp back down, which is almost automatic,Petit has to replace someone else on the 40 after these 2 games to stay up.
Sorry Chico but I hope they Surkamp your friend. ๐
Hey, look at this! Oh, sorry Chico.
I am the wrong guy to ask about the pitching. I was rooting for Chris Heston to get the call and they DFAed the guy for vive la Francoeur. So I don’t know shit.
“I canโt remember a single thing about the other game and discovered tonight that the no-no was actually the second game of the day.”
Criminy, BF! I was at that doubleheader, too, and I’ve posted several times at the Flap about that doubleheader! Dave Kingman hit two homeruns in the first game, one of them a grandslam, and the Mets won the first game.
First game- Mets won, Kingman 2 HRs, one a grandslam

That’s very cool. Where were you sitting? My dad doesn’t even remember going to the game, lol.
I was very young but I distinctly remember being down the left field line back under the bleachers a little bit.
Yeah your dad was probably in the Giants bar mid- level pounding some drinks. ๐
Left you with a bunch of Mets fan till the end of the no-no just in time to drive home.
Hey, I brought some good luck folks ๐
Corky Miller .100 – 1 RBI.
Fuck Barry. Gimme a break.
My favorite double header was the GIant Dodgers twi-night DH back around 86. Near riot that day as the Giants were beaten soundly in game 1 and fought back to tie the game after being down 6-1 in game 2 The Dogs scored 3 times on a Guerrero double and a hit from someone else, and the hilarity ensued as he jawed the whole way up the 1st base line to the Giants dugout.
By the time Guerrero got to the dugout, fans were pelting the field with garbage. Mike Marshall tried to go after a fan in the stands and got punched 2x in the face for his trouble. Lasorda came out of the dugout to see what was happening, and nearly got beaned with a 90 MPH orange out of the stands. He ran for cover in the dugout, and the cops descended on the melee to restore order. Insane.
Zits doing his best to piss away this lead. His pitches are dangerously up.
Pitch caught too much of the plate for Pablo liking.
Buster looks exhausted.
Zito may not make it to 5.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand he doesn’t
Let’s see if Dunning can take care of the oh so dangerous Corky Miller.
Still probably Zito’s best road start this year.
Maybe it’s a moment of enlightenment. Being on the road is a state of mind. If you can pitch on the road at home, you can pitch at home on the road. On the Road–great book. Dharma Bums was great, too. Japhy Ryder knew how to make his home anywhere he went. That’s what Zito needs to do. No matter where he pitches. (And don’t forget to keep the FB out of the zone.)
I love this post, xoot. I loved Dharma Bums, too, if I remember rightly.
I think it’s time the Giants dug into the Cuba defector draft.

I’m gassed. Gotta get up super early and probably one too many beers. Plus, why fuck with the first “game” I ever went to? It shall remain the only double header I ever saw start to finish– even if I have no recollection of the first game. ๐
I remember listening to the Halicki no-hitter via the Mets announcers as I wended through Route 17, to Syracuse, having started in Stamford, Ct. It was bitterly hot, I think.
Anyone going to see Jackson Browne, Joan Baez, and Emmylou Harris on Saturday in San Jose? Wish I could.
My wife and I are going.
so cool
BF, at that doubleheader we were sitting on the lower level, a little to the thirdbase side of homeplate, but far back, and probably had one of those pillars blocking part of the view.
It ended up being a good move by Bochy to remove Zito in the 5th. It wasn’t a stellar game by Zito, but he did pretty good, all things considered, and kept them in the game.
Casilla with the high hard one to end that. Nice.
Sergioooooooooo! It’s a split.
Good night, girls. I was afraid I was forgetting how to type this letter: W.
Wow. Loooooooooooooooong game on a looooooooooooooooooong day.
A win is a win is a win. 17 baserunners for Cincy. Yikes. Let’s hope the G’s can salvage the split.
1,500 wins for Bochy!
East Coasters signing off.
Finally, something good out of a game with the Reds. Nice finish by Romo. I know a closer on a team that might be going nowhere at 8 games under .500 in their 100th game seems expendable, but I hope SF hangs onto the little guy. His stuff not only looks illegal, it’s deadly.
Feels like they forced a game 7.
WHOOP!
I was beginning to think WINS! were gonna be as often as Royal births.
Finally a win. In my mind this season is lost when one is grateful for one win in a series especially at home. I hope I’m wrong but I doubt it.
Starting to sound like Soph there, Nippy.
