A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Don’t Stop Believing in…..Ugly

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 16, 2014

I continue to force myself to not have any expectations about this post season. Don’t get me wrong, I’m enjoying the ride. I just don’t understand the ride. But I absolutely BELIEVE in the ride. And when it comes to *magic* that’s about all you really need, right?

What do the Giants do best? Before this series started, I said “they compete.” And while I still believe that, what they really do best is “whatever it takes.” That’s not a very sexy quality to have until you realize that you can make up for a lot of shortcomings when you do “whatever it takes.” In some ways, it’s all you need.

So I accept, without reservation, the imperfections of the 2014 San Francisco Giants. I celebrate their heart and soul. And I honor their innate will to do….”whatever it takes.”

And whether they lose 3 straight or win 5 more games this year, or do something in between, this is one of my favorite teams of all time. Make no mistake, it’s certainly one of the ugliest. But it’s the easiest one in the world to believe in…..

    Dig that for Ishi.
Screws up earlier on that fly ball, lets in a run.
Makes up for it, in spades…

Nice. I remember I used to think he was saying “Jeremy’s broken–clear as the day”

What a game. I still don’t think it has fully sunk in—and then you throw the home run ball deal on top of that. Too much.

This season was beyond torture. I’m still in disbelief. The whole thing was just get to the playoffs. In y mind I believed that, but in my heart I didn’t think they’d get past Washington, After that? Shit. I did think we stood a shot after taking them down. I picked 5 BTW!!! Unfuckingbelievable. Unfuckingbelievable.

I have no idea how we’ll do vs KC. This series was a fucking rollercoaster on every goddamn pitch.

5 days off though seems pretty ludicrous.

Ishi rising. He had his biggest career hit the other day. Just topped it. More to come. And… nothing ugly about this, my friends. Winning beautifully. And yet another “better” team heads home, shaking their heads, wondering “how the hell did we lose to those guys…. again…”….

So the last time two Wild Card teams made it to the WS was in 2002. I’m thinking If Russ Ortiz throws out the first pitch for us, no way does he get to keep the ball.

  15. dirtnrocksnomo said, on October 16, 2014 at 9:27 pm

Listened to the KNBR post game en route for more booze. Miller pointed out that Ishikawa had 7 RBI in the series and the series winner. He could have just as well brought home the MVP.

  16. snarkk said, on October 16, 2014 at 9:27 pm

I’m thinking about that grounder in the 9th that Panda deflected over to Craw and Craw with the quick throw to second for the out. Should have known right there that something good was going on…

    • Flavor said, on October 16, 2014 at 9:29 pm

it really was a sign, right? Just like the 3 hit base hit from Pence in 2012.

And the Kinsler “homer” that bounced back into play off the top of the wall for a double in 2010…

Couple factoids for the upcoming Series:

This is the first time, not including a strike season (’81) or war-shortened season (’18), that both World Series teams did not have 90 wins.

The winner will set a new single postseason record of 12 wins.

  21. snarkk said, on October 16, 2014 at 9:37 pm

If Matheny had pulled Wacha to bring in a LHP, Bochy would have pulled Ishi for Susac or another RHB pinch hitter. Matheny must have figured Ishi was the easier out. Matheny will get hammered for bringing in a guy under super pressure who hadn’t pitched in over two weeks…

  22. twinfan1 said, on October 16, 2014 at 9:39 pm

As good and exciting game that I’ve seen. Heroes galore. Feel badly for Wacha, though. Just unfair to put him in there having not pitched in 3 weeks..
But I’ll get over feeling sorry for him.. OK, I’m over it ;- )

  23. snarkk said, on October 16, 2014 at 9:41 pm

I still can’t believe this game.
Panik rips an HR off Wainright. On the radio, Blanco said Panik before the game was watching old video of Bill Mueller hitting an HR off Mariano Rivera’s cutter, because Wainright threw a tough cutter — so he was ready for it, and kept his arms in as he swung, like Mueller did.
Morse rips a tater. No clue how he did that, he looked pretty bad his last few ABs. Just crazy.
Then, Ishi with the mind blower pennant winning walk off…

  24. WilcoJoe said, on October 16, 2014 at 9:42 pm

Flav mentioned it earlier, but it’s worth repeating. Twin has to be feeling pretty good right now. He was probably Ishi’s biggest supporter thru the years…I can’t wait to hear his next post. It might be Pulitzer worthy.

    • twinfan1 said, on October 16, 2014 at 9:53 pm

I’m workin’ on it, Joe. Truly a great story. Cut by 5 teams since 2011- after TWO at bats by the Yanks last year. But what a great game with so many contributions from so many guys.

I asked Pav about Ishi when Sabean signed him to the minor league contract. Alex said it was just for depth if there were more injuries. When he did come up the consensus was that he’d just be up for a few days until Belt was back. Then he surprised everyone- including me, by becoming an instant contributor. Travis, Susac, and Duffy instantly turned a weak bench into a very good one. Then this. Awesome

  41. twinfan1 said, on October 16, 2014 at 10:39 pm

Harold Reynolds gets a lot of flak but he nailed it on Ishi’s AB. Wacha had thrown 6 straight balls and I think Buck was talking about taking a pitch. Reynolds said no- be aggressive and look for his pitch. And that he did. That was right in his wheelhouse, no way you let that go by..

    • pawliekokonuts said, on October 16, 2014 at 10:42 pm

I had a Fox feed on with KNBR, but I did catch that from Reynolds later on as I did a replay. As William Carlos Williams of Paterson, NJ put it: “…so much depends.” So much depended on swinging rather than taking. Well, everything depended on it, at that point. (I may not be making any sense at 1:42am.)

Some of the Giants players made an obstacle course for Ishi as he ran around the bases, but that pales in comparison to what Chambliss had to go through to get around the bases after his big homerun. Unreal! Talk about a different era:

  52. paulinasia said, on October 17, 2014 at 12:07 am

Interesting to read the posts on that Cardinals blog. Some of them, of course, could have been lifted from the Flap (allusions to drinking, heart attacks, etc., universal baseball maladies in tight games). My favorite was this one, posted by someone just as the 8th inning was starting: “Could someone please kidnap Matheny for about the next 45 minutes?” Ah, we’ll never have to deal with that, having Yoda Bochy at the helm. A lot of references to “devil magic” (the devil himself directing the deflection from Pablo’s glove to Crawford’s). Mostly, I feel for those fans, they seem genuine. And then there are arseholes who said things like this: “They’re a mediocre franchise that’s 4 wins away from fluking to a THIRD FUCKING WORLD SERIES TITLE IN FIVE YEARS I CAN’T EVEN FUCKING BEGIN TO EXPRESS HOW FUCKING ANGRY THAT MAKES ME FUCK THOSE FUCKING FUCKS…”

Huh, I suppose that also could’ve been lifted from the Flap under different circumstances… 🙂 And most of them will be rooting for KC and they’re saying they think the whole country will also be. Well, game on, gentlemen (?)…… KC obviously has some mojo going on, but no way will the Series be like those 3 games the G’s lost in KC this past summer….
