Haiku Time

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on December 27, 2014

Shrouded in the darkness and cold of a post-Christmas/pre-New Year morning…..Juan Gutierrez has been resigned to a minor league deal. Not sure, but I think we’ve reached the bottom of the news barrel. And we all know what that means. It’s haiku time…

This one was written by Giants fan Steve Hermanos. It’s about Country Legend

Your expanding pants

Now accommodating balls

Big as tractor wheels

I forget when this started making the rounds on KNBR.I think it was mid October…..

Hey, don’t miss the link from MacDog’s end of previous thread for pix of Busy block sweaters in Giants colors (and a lot more). The Posey one, is um quite busy and the $$$ have gotta be a misprint.

Haft wrote some words on the Giants. I’m not going to link. Here’s the best part.

“It’s easy to forget that Bumgarner, 25, also delivered an outstanding regular-season performance. His total of 18 victories was the highest by a Giants pitcher since Shawn Estes had 19 in 1997. Bumgarner struck out 219 batters, the most in history by a Giants left-hander since the franchise moved to San Francisco in 1958. He made the NL All-Star team, won an NL Silver Slugger Award as the league’s best hitter among pitchers, captured the league’s Pitcher of the Month honors in May and August and was named the “Willie Mac Award” winner as the team’s most inspirational player.”

That Hermanos Haiku is actually a coupla years old. It started back to 2012. Maybe earlier. KNBR pulls it out every now and again when conditions merit, like this past post season…

If he didn’t cost too much, I’d take Zobrist for his versatility. We certainly need more good positional players…..

      • twinfan1 said, on December 27, 2014 at 3:41 pm

I’m in on Zobrist- it’s interesting now because Sabean wanted him at the deadline .At the time Panik was hitting .211. He might have been optioned back to Fresno.

  17. snarkk said, on December 27, 2014 at 2:39 pm

Bochy is signed through 2016. Cotts doesn’t have his contract $ numbers, but there’s info out there he might be making up to $5M/year. Is he worth more or less than Harbaugh? After winning 3 out of 5, you’d have a great argument he’s worth more, especially after how much $ the Giants have pulled in during and after these WS runs…

Or put another way, Brian Cashman, who I think sucks as a GM, makes 3 mil a year. Wrong on many levels. Hopefully Sabes gets a WS share to help feed him family. lqtm

Hey, I’m happy he’s gone. His offenses were mediocre at best. His passing schemes were 70s era bland.

With Derek Jeter’s retirement, who’s the only active player with 4 W/S appearances?

      Javier Lopez?

  36. Alleykat said, on December 28, 2014 at 1:09 pm

    Should of mentioned 4 W/S appearances + W/S rings.
Javier Lopez has 4…. 1 with Boston,3 with the Giants.
Jeremy Affeldt has 3 with the Giants, but loss out with the Rockies for his 4 th ring

  37. pawliekokonuts said, on December 28, 2014 at 4:27 pm

No one here needs reminding: like Yusmeiro Petit, Jeremy Affeldt is a guy whose fairly quiet postseason accomplishments in 2014 cannot be overestimated. They came up big in big moments. Thanks!

  38. paulinasia said, on December 28, 2014 at 6:40 pm

Anyone know Petit’s contract status? He could be a very very key part of the pitching staff in 2015, I’m just curious about his status and haven’t found anything on it.

    • snarkk said, on December 28, 2014 at 6:47 pm

He was arb eligible last year and signed a one year deal, so I assume he’s arb eligible again…

    • Chipower9 said, on December 29, 2014 at 12:39 pm

Avoided arbitration last year and signed for 845k. He is arb eligible for the next two years (FA in 2017).

    • Alleykat said, on December 29, 2014 at 11:49 am

MacDog..Yeah I switched it to 4 W/S rings, and after Jeter retired, the only active player to have 4 now is Javier Lopez, maybe he can get a 5th for his thumb.Cause Yadier Molina doesn’t have 4 rings, so screw him😄

      • Macdog said, on December 29, 2014 at 12:15 pm

Got it, Kat, And yeah, Molina has “only” 2 rings, so he’s not even in Affeldt’s neighborhood.

    • willedav said, on December 29, 2014 at 8:56 am

I’m just glad the drama and the trauma over who is butt hurt is over.
Kinda funny that Killion, who has complained loudest and longest since pre-season about everything from traffic, the yard and myriad dysfunction, wonders if things will get worse. Jed isn’t most inspiring CEO.

I just think Niners issues go a lot deeper than HC and are more complex. It’s never easy to keep winning group together and tough to build through draft and FA pick ups/trades.
And once any system has success, 30 others including those in division that see you often, are hard at work figuring out how to stop it. Niners lack of success in second half of games I think points to that and I do think Harbs has a fall back plan he is in love with that won’t work with players he has.

      • unca_chuck said, on December 29, 2014 at 9:02 am

Yeah there were a ton of problems when Harbaugh came on board. Biggest was a mess of people trying to get on the same page. Eddie complained that there were too many from office types and no clear path of hierarchy or communicAtion. Winning masked those problems, for a while but it is now rearing its head again.

I don’t think they have a choice but to hire from within due to the mess upstairs.

The team is sti going to have a LOT of talent so that coould attract someone.
