FanFest Tomorrow and More Manfred Stuff

Fanfest tomorrow. Anyone going?

New MLB commish Manfred supports legalizing sports betting. To which I say, in 2015 who still has trouble getting a bet down on a game?

And with the explosion of daily fantasy sports gaming it’s surprising to me that mlb isn’t working more diligently with the main players in fantasy sports (fanduel and draftkings) on a more rigorous marketing campaign the way the NBA is doing it. DFS sports players are the people obsessively clicking on the refresh button over and over at

Halftime of Dubs game vs. Dalas the new Commish talked about gambling too as I recall, but more importantly different approach to seeding teams in playoffs.

Check out Zum’s posts (wow at 4 AM) end of last thread on Aussie baseball. The line that got me was, “presented by ConocoPhillips.” Can you imagine sitting through 3 hours of those cheesy Chevron commercials about how much they care about the environment? wonder what Richmond fans would think about that?

Aren’t teams in Japan owned by large business consortiums? Can you imagine what would happen if oil companies got in on pro sports team ownership?

Reason #1 I don’t get into ST: Column in today’s Chron about Brandon Hicks. After getting sent down due to his horrible slump/complete inability to have his bat resume contact with a baseball he hit .218 for Fresno in the Coast League. He was not ever called back up, Sept or otherwise. Admits he couldn’t watch much of WS and playoffs but is happy to accept invite back and says he can play other positions. Lot of nice things said about his early contributions to SF great start…

I’m 100% positive I won’t be attending the fanfest this year.

Dubs get down 20 early, right the ship and comeback to beat tough Dallas team as Steph gets 51.
Clippers last night get down 10 early and 20 at half, then pick up 5 Ts, get down by 30 and are blown out. Matt Barnes gets thrown out, Chris Paul whines about a female ref yada yada. These guys are annoying and play like Zum said about cousins–no joy unless they are kicking your ass. Otherwise they whine and complain and play thug ball if things don’t go their way. Lotta good teams in West that I hope eliminate Clips early.

Yanks and Arod seems to be another situation that won’t end well. Yanks tried to weasel out of paying him a bonus for incentives in contract and have “agreed to meet with him.” He is universally reviled and very annoying, but does want to play and expects to be part of the team. If the Yanks don’t want him I don’t see how they can get out of it, and I’m sure union would stick up for his rights. And he is still owed a ton of money without a position to play with Headley signed for 3b.

In his bio Rivera talked about Rodriguez first years with club 10 years ago and how he tried to talk to him often about calming down and not getting caught up in outside stuff (often stuff he creates like complaining about where Torre hit him in LU) and just playing the game as best he can. Too often Rodriguez pride and ego got in the way of his skills and talents, and he seemed to be trying to put himself out there to gain attention, exactly the wrong approach according to Rivera.
He was also very disappointed ARod took the drug route he did and felt that was cheating the game. Doesn’t appear he has learned anything over the years.

Wow, time does fly; I hadn’t realized A-Rod’s been with the Yanks for 10 years. And they’re stuck paying him $30 million per year for a few more years. And he has no position, unless they end up DH-ing him quite a bit.
He only needs a few HRs to pass Mays, and get a few more million as part of the incentives in his contract.

Re A-Rod, I’m not sure what Mo is talking about unless it’s the playoffs, because A-Rod was without question the Yankees’ best player during the regular season for his first 5-6 years in the Bronx:

      2004: 36-106-.286, .888 OPS
      2005: 48-130-.321, 1.031
      2006: 35-121-.290, .914
      2007: 54-156-.314, 1.067
      2008: 35-103-.302, .965
      2009: 30-100-.286, .933
      2010: 30-125-.270, .847.

The one time A-Rod had a good postseason — 2009 — the Yanks won it all. He also had a good postseason going in ’04, but it was none other than Mo who gagged away ALCS games 4 & 5 vs. the Red Sox and set in motion the greatest choke job in MLB history.

Speaking of the Australian Baseball League….here’s a couple of classic moments in that league:

From Pav: Sabean on Moncada: “We’ve scouted him heavily but it would be a long shot for us to sign someone like that at this time.”

    No surprise there.

Well I am not going to Fanfest. I will be watching the Duke vs ND tomorrow morning. My son is a huge Duke fan, his girl friends sister goes to Duke U, she got him a ticket to the game. He and his girl friend left for NC on Thursday. He has been touring the gym this morning. I would love it if he got a pic with Coach K. 👍👍👏👏

Besides my hatred for the Dodgers, being a Kentucky fan, my hatred for Duke is a close second. But I do respect Coach K. But F Duke Kevin:)

Macdog, take all those a rod stats and toss them in the toilet along with his urine sample…

The Dubs have better players, ATL plays better team ball. Let’s see what happens. I came home early to watch this game

Delighted to see Bochy is in a mix n’ match lineup mode as per Pavs at his new post. It makes my dream L.U. first shared here when the team took on Aoki a distinct possibility of happening from time to time and as the season progresses, maybe the Grosskopf’s main go.

Aoki is not far from being an ideal leadoff man. Explosive speed and he would be precisely that. He’s fast enough to be a constant threat to be on the move though, once he gets to 1B, which will be with some frequency as per his use the whole field, draw some walks, high OBP propensities.

Bochy is dead set sold on only one cast in iron positional fit. Panik is a superb fit in the #2 hole. Good doubles hitter, uses the whole field, high OBP and with growing power possibility. Smart player too.

Delighted totally that Big Bruce sees his fellow BB as something more than a shot from an air-rifle. He’s part of the chorus now who sees Belt as ready for his big breakthrough this go-round. He was taking off last Spring, leading the MAJORS in HRs, when he got cracked on the knuckles by some Dog pitcher.

Who bats cleanup? Need we ask? Former MVP. His power-sag over the past couple years does nothing to say he’s not feared by every hurler he faces. Presence of Andrew Susac with a year’s experience under his belt should allow BB15 to rest his #4 hitter twice per week. Some rest and no power/performance drop in September.

Popeye Pence is almost perfectly positioned as the Enforcer. You want your #5 hitter to be the kinda guy pitchers sweat even when facing #’s 3 and 4.

Aoki at leadoff almost insists on Pagan batting sixth. An excellent RBI man, rather exceptional for one who traditionally has led off, the Angel of the outfield will also get plenty of shots at leading off innings in that slot.

Tickle me Elmo McGeheehee batting right after Pagan should keep that line a rollin many a time. His return to his native turf could boost his performance level by a couple ticks. As a spray hitter with a big outfield to drive the defense crazy, we could be looking at a happy Casey.

Crawdaddy might just emerge from the swamp this season. Our scorpion with that stinger in the tail, makes this lineup one lonnnnng sonuvabitch.

Gotta love Stix, making it all sound so rosy. Not an easy outlook on life when the mercury is looking up at 0 either.

Mac, ARod was either good or very bad in playoffs. 5 different years in post season play with Yanks he hit under .200, total of 12 for 83 with 0 HRs. Didn’t sit too well with fanbase that expects better out of a guy making his scratch, and he did get booed at home. And of course they lost 4 of those 5, unacceptable. Rivera’s take was he made it harder on himself, needlessly.
Rivera owned up to his own failings too, including the AZ WS loss when he threw a bunt away before Gonzalez bloop hit that did them in.

If Bonds a superior hitter in every way I can think of, can’t get in, it doesn’t matter what numbers ARod puts up in his regular seasons (which might be over).

Dubs game was great by both teams. Reminded me more of 80s ball, both teams can score. ATL just scored a few more and hit the 3s. See what happens in the rematch in Oaktown.

Today’s Puig gif. In this one, Puig doesn’t realize his catch is the third out, and he fires the ball to Uribe, who wasn’t expecting that, and he gives Puig the stank-eye.

    • xoot said, on February 6, 2015 at 8:48 pm

Puig’s lucky he didn’t clock someone with that throw. Uribe knows him well, however.
