Panik Time?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 3, 2015

I think we’re about to find out how important Joe Panik is to the Giants line up. As a couple of us wondered about during Saturday’s game, it’s clear that Panik is still struggling with a back problem. It’s too early to call it an injury. Here’s what he said after the game he sat out yesterday:

“We tried to battle through it. It’s not getting better.”

This is disappointing since everyone knows Adrianza is not a major league caliber player. At least not one with any value. The minor league level is weak with Kevin Frandsen and the newly acquired criminal, I mean *player*, Everth Cabrera as possibilities. Somewhere Jo-Arias might be waiting around. I actually didn’t follow up with his landing spot, if any, after he was designated.

Off to Atlanta. I hate playing The Braves. They always seem to pop up and outplay their record at the worst time when we play them. They’re a free swinging team with nothing to lose facing a pitcher who is having location problems since he came back from the DL. This could be a *problem* game……

I just want to know who would win a pose down between BuzzSaw & Aubrey Hill.

Somebody has to hit 8th. If it’s not going to be Pagan, might as well be OOO, hopefully not for long..
In the 9th Pagan started the rally and next 3 up got a walk and 2 singles off the pen.
Just bad luck only scored once.
Cain Peavy and Bum are all from the South, as are Pence Belt Posey so I don’t think the hot weather is a big deal. Shouldn’t bother the Latin guys either, as they grew up with it too. If I remember right Bum said he actually likes it, helps him to get loose quicker.

Braves are in Sept call up mode right now I think, so it’s young guys playing for jobs next year. Could be just what the vet SPs can take advantage of.

So I took my soon to be seven year old to see the new Vacation movie yesterday. It actually was pretty damn funny, but I had no idea it was rated R until the f-bombs started dropping in the first few scenes. Oh well, it’s not like he hadn’t heard those words before….However I did one of those, slowly slouch down in your seat moves, when he loudly asked me (during a brief moment of silence) “hey dad, what’s a rim job?”

    • chipower9 said, on August 3, 2015 at 9:04 am

LMAO…that is good stuff, Wilco…and what was your answer to the rim job question??

      • wilcojoe said, on August 3, 2015 at 9:08 am

        I told him I didn’t know. 😉

that’s hilarious. What do you tell him about the Viagra and Cialis commercials that are on almost every commercial break?

    • blade3colorado said, on August 3, 2015 at 9:36 am

Hilarious. So afterwards, DID YOU EXPLAIN WHAT A RIM JOB IS?

This used to be great rivalry 20 yrs ago. Doing warehouse work then, we’d listen to KSJO Lamont and Tonelli in mornings. One of their bits was a call in to “Otis Nixon’s GrandMa.”

Used to go see them at Stick in Eddie Mathews Aaron Spahn Burdette days, and always liked their road gray unis with the Brave guy on the shoulder. One of last games I saw there was a night game Giants f-ed up Mike Stanton for late game W.
Now Braves remind me of Brooks Conrad.

  5. chipower9 said, on August 3, 2015 at 9:03 am

I still cannot believe the didn’t come back and win that game yesterday. I listened to most of it during my drive back from Carson City and caught the last couple of innings at home. I thought for sure they either tied or took the lead with Posey and Pence, and at a minimum, thought Pence would beat out the DP. Fuck. Oh well. Erase. Rewind. Delete.

Now it is time to Stop the Chop.

On the fight between Aubrey and Buzzsaw, I lay my money on Hill. Those wiry dudes are usually trouble when it comes to scrapping.

And yes, our boys need to upgrade their utility IF. Panik is still “day to day” and did not respond to treatment yesterday. There is a good chance he will have more tests today. This is not good.

Regarding upgrades, here is an article I saw on possible waiver-wire acquisitions.

@SanDawg: hope you caught Aoki misplay, puro Skates, with ball and Aoki both on the ground (after it hit im in the glove) going in different directions. Fred Lewis couldn’t have played it any better.

the braves are a team with nothing to lose. They’ll be free swinging with no pressure. If Cain brings his location problems to this start we are in trouble…..

  8. Flavor said, on August 3, 2015 at 9:19 am

    @uncachuck
stopped by your blog last night. Dude, what is going on over there with the dude posting stories about his “wifey”? Plus, Dennis is back? Time to start getting an itchy *block finger* again……

  9. unca_chuck said, on August 3, 2015 at 10:12 am

That’s FlyingV. He’s been banned about 1,500 times in the past year. My spam filter usually hits about 30 a day with him. Eventually he gets a couple through. He’s been a pain in the ass going back to 2008 on the 49er Insider Chronicle blog. Slow times right now, but a whole lot of negative bullshit around the team.

I mean really. I think the team is in better shape without Harbaugh and his traveling headcase show. Its not like all the stuff around the team doesn’t happen with Harbaugh here. Gore takes the 3 year deal, Borland and Willis retire, Cox and Cully leave. On and on. It’s not like Willis and Borland don’t retire if Harbs stayed. In fact, all the bullshit around Harbuagh’s problems with the front office and the players is gone. After the first couple practices, the team is in a better state. Laughing, smiling, where last year, it was very down, according to Maiocco and Barrows and the beat writers. Breath of fresh air and all that. That doesn’t guarantee anything, but I think they play better and looser without the undue pressure Harbaugh had them under.

The issue to me is O line depth and the new offense. The D should be fine. And the bar for the offense is very low. Quicker plays and less wasted time outs. Getting the ball out of Kappy’s hands quicker is paramount. We haven’t run quick plays since Mooch in 2002.

Dennis is on probation. He send me a mea culpa letter so I gave him another chance.

  10. unca_chuck said, on August 3, 2015 at 10:13 am

These east coast swings always make me nervous. The Braves are a team that is beaten down. Got to get on top early and shut their shit down.

  11. Flavor said, on August 3, 2015 at 10:28 am

    _chuck

2 things: I agree that we are better off with Tom v Harbs and I like your link of Tom to Bochy for the reasons you gave. Harbs became Capt Queeg and that shit doesn’t last long at the pro level.
My concern is Kaep not getting better but I’m willing to be open minded that he learned something from Warner.

Next thing: why don’t you just go to having your readers log in to post? It’s worked great here, It’s been months since I’ve had a troll in my spam filter because they’re too pussy to sign in with personal info. I fucking LOVE IT>>>>>>
Plus, even if they take the time to create a fake account somewhere all you have to do is block that account and they’re into spam. So far, no one has tried multiple times with multiple different fake accounts since it takes time to create them and one thing pussy trolls WON’T do is put effort into something that involves inputting personal info
And regarding Dennis— fuck Dennis and his racist rants. He used to send me those pussy “let me back in” emails too. He’s a fucking drunk racist fuck. He is banned here for life……

    • Irish Kevin said, on August 3, 2015 at 12:47 pm

Yikes, tell us how you really feel about Dennis!! Ha ha ha and yes Dennis can be a buffoon, but there are times where he is entertaining. A lot to put up with for only a few chuckles.

      • Flavor said, on August 3, 2015 at 12:53 pm

the old Dennis who I used to gamble with along with Loo died a long time ago. Loo put it well a few years back. Sometimes you get into a dark place on the internet and some guys never get out of it. That’s what happened to Dennis…..

  12. unca_chuck said, on August 3, 2015 at 10:55 am

Going a little Jamesian here, by the numbers Kappy didn’t really regress as much as it’s made out to be. Throw in the injuries to the o line and the insistence on the coaching staff telling him to stop running led to the dogshit offense. Telling Kappy to hold the ball longer before running took one of his pluses and negated it. He can’t survive running all the time, but he was sacked 52 times last year. No way to make a living.

I like what I’m hearing from camp regarding quicker plays. Getting the ball out faster and getting plays off quicker will be a help to gain rhythm and consistency.

    • Flavor said, on August 3, 2015 at 11:07 am

good take. Plus, maybe the screen comes back to the offense with a new OC and Reggie Bush who can do exactly that one thing….

      • unca_chuck said, on August 3, 2015 at 12:51 pm

The only thing that scares me about screens at this point is that if we aren’t blocking well, screens become very dangerous plays. Smith used to skip passes off Gore’s hands for pick 6s.

  13. zumiee said, on August 3, 2015 at 12:37 pm

I was watching a film of highlights from the ’89 Niners recently, granted, one of the best teams of all time, but it was marvelous to see the diversity of the offense. I don’t know what happened to those types of offenses. Rathman, as a fullback, caught about 50 (!) passes that season. Unheard of by any NFL teams these days. I guess the defenses caught up and the offenses adjusted.
As much as I enjoyed seeing the Niners have success for a few years with Harbaugh, I have to admit the style of ball they were playing was kind of dull to watch, other than Kap on the occasional amazing run. It was fun to watch the dominance on defense, but the offense was so dull.

    • unca_chuck said, on August 3, 2015 at 12:56 pm

Linebackers got faster. Actually, Gore under Nolan/Sing regularly caught 40-50 balls a year. Then again, Smith was checkdown Charlie. Still and all, though, that went out the window under Harbaugh. Gore, when not running, was mostly used as a blocker. He didn’t get outlet passes like he used to.

What helped that team of course was the presence of Jerry Rice and John Taylor stretching the field.

The big lack in recent years IS a deep threat. If you can’t develop a consistent deep threat, teams crowd shit at the line. Torrey Smith will help with that this year. And hopefully some more imagination on offense.

      • Lurker John said, on August 3, 2015 at 2:38 pm

And a brilliantly conceived offense and a HoF QB to run it and a stacked roster. Everyone’s faster in the NFL now, not just LB’s.

  14. zumiee said, on August 3, 2015 at 12:41 pm

Pagan at lead-off again today. Seriously? One of the Giants’ SABR enthusiasts needs to try to catch Bochy’s ear.
BF said it well the other day: Pagan is a grape that we’ve squeezed the juice from. He’s a shell now. He’d really be best off being put on the DL. Granted, we don’t have anything to replace him with, but that’s because Sabean/Evans didn’t make a move to get somebody. Parra was a guy to go after. Heck, I’d even take hot-head Gomez.

  15. zumiee said, on August 3, 2015 at 12:44 pm

And Adrianza gets his third start in a row. How can you make the playoffs if THAT guy is getting a bunch of starts?
I would have kept Arias over Adrianza.

  16. zumiee said, on August 3, 2015 at 12:45 pm

Panik to the 15 day DL.

Giants purchase contract of INF Kelby Tomlinson from Triple A to fill Panik’s spot.

  20. Macdog said, on August 3, 2015 at 12:48 pm

Also, INF Kelby Tomlinson called up.

  21. unca_chuck said, on August 3, 2015 at 12:49 pm

As much as I try to keep up with the minor leaguers, they bring up guys who I’ve never heard of.

  22. unca_chuck said, on August 3, 2015 at 12:50 pm

Blanco is playing well. There’s no reason for him not to be lead-off.

    • ewisco said, on August 3, 2015 at 1:04 pm

he seems to struggle at lead off but he is hitting well overall and playing great defense so i’d sit pagan for a week or two and let aoki lead off.

      • unca_chuck said, on August 3, 2015 at 2:47 pm

Shit. Forgot about Aoki being back . . . doh

  23. chipower9 said, on August 3, 2015 at 12:52 pm

Tomlinson has played 16 games at 2nd, 15 at SS, and four at 3B this year in Sacto.

    His slash line: .316, .354, .382, .736.

Damn, hope Panik is good to go after this 15 day stint. We are gonna need him down the stretch.

He is also 21 for 30 in stolen base attempts.

  24. Flavor said, on August 3, 2015 at 12:55 pm

Pawlie, you and I are to be commended for noticing that Panik was hurt and still playing 2+ days before he finally hit the DL……

    • pawliekokonuts said, on August 3, 2015 at 3:20 pm

yup, but what’s it get us?

  25. chipower9 said, on August 3, 2015 at 12:55 pm

    1. Angel Pagan (S) CF
    2. Nori Aoki (L) LF
    3. Matt Duffy (R) 3B
    4. Buster Posey (R) C
    5. Hunter Pence (R) RF
    6. Brandon Belt (L) 1B
    7. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
    8. Ehire Adrianza (S) 2B
    9. Matt Cain (R) P (2-2, 4.50 ERA)

  26. dirtnrocksnomo said, on August 3, 2015 at 1:03 pm

I think we’re seeing the last gasp of Pagan atop the order. Bochy giving him the fair shot and whatnot. After closing the 1st half and then opening the 2nd half strong the Giants dropped the series in Texas. Time to step it up in Hotlanta. Cain’s going to be going full Tyler Walker sweat machine by the 2nd inning. With Panik to the DL I’d rather see this LU but whatever.

    Aoki
    Duffy
    Posey
    Pence
    Belt
    Crawford
    Pagan
    Adrian Pennino
    Pitcher

    • ewisco said, on August 3, 2015 at 1:10 pm

one of the things I’ve been pondering is a while back, belt kept talking about how much he liked batting third. that was his favorite spot, that’s where he hit most of the time coming up etc. so he actually got to hit third a bit towards the end of last season and did well if I remember correctly. he was very happy to be in his happy place. turn around to this year and duffy starts well and all of a sudden HE’S hitting third. Belt had to be thinking to himself “how come he gets to hit there when it took me years?” So I think rather than Posey third I would put belt. plus you get that l-r-l-r start to the lineup.

      • dirtnrocksnomo said, on August 3, 2015 at 1:14 pm

I thought that too, ewisco. Maybe even flip Belt and Pence for the r-l-r as you mention. I don’t think Bochy would put him in the clean up spot though. He’s usually closed the season strong so maybe we still see it.

    • chipower9 said, on August 3, 2015 at 1:51 pm

Adrian Pennino…Adrianza Ehire…what the fuck is the difference…

  27. xoot said, on August 3, 2015 at 2:37 pm

Pagan scratched, Aoiki-san bumped up to lead off, and Blanco in CF–Baggarly

  28. unca_chuck said, on August 3, 2015 at 2:50 pm

Pagan is likely hitting the DL after getting pulled . . .

  29. unca_chuck said, on August 3, 2015 at 2:50 pm

    Jeeze. Old news I guess . .

  30. alleykat69 said, on August 3, 2015 at 3:10 pm

Better Panik takes the time off now, to get better. Need him healthy for late Aug/Sept run. Same could be said for Pagan except getting any better, that ship has sailed..
What’s the count at for 100 games Chi?

    • chipower9 said, on August 3, 2015 at 3:12 pm

      97 games, Kat…

  31. alleykat69 said, on August 3, 2015 at 3:18 pm

    Kelby Tomilson?
The Kid looks like Craig Biggio, hope he can hit as well.
Also he’s tall 6’3 but skinny 180 lbs another Matt Duffy?

    1. I have no idea who Buzzsaw and Hill are? Boxers? Or some sort of extreme sport male Rounda Rousey or whoever she is? I thought Buzzsaw was Loo’s Shea Stadium pal. 2. I have never met or even heard of anyone named Kelby before. Is he on Duck Dynasty? Bring back Jo-Arias.
