Saturday!
I choose not to comment on losing 2-nada to the Dirrrrrrty Snakes.
Today is probably the first time in my life that I am going to watch a Cal game where they aren’t playing Stanford. I am legitimately interested in seeing how they do. Goff is the real deal, I think, and it’s time to find out where the Bears stand against real teams.
And then Stanford will be getting blown out by USC later tonight…..

Baseball question: Is there a team you are going to be rooting for in the post season? Or are you not interested if the Giants aren’t in it?
I’d like to see The Pirates play the Blue Jays in the world series. Two fun teams to watch…….
Hate the Dodgers, Mets, Cards and Yanks. Indifferent to all others…
Flav: I think I remember you meeting Shaw at some kids game years ago – could be wrong.
You didn’t like him then either.
His daughter played 2 straight years in our YMCA league. It was a joke. She completely dominated and should have been in a more competitive league. She was clearly better coached than the other kids and as a child of 2 pro athletes she had the genes for success too.
Shaw showed up for most of her games, so he gets some credit there. But I’m not sure what he or his daughter got out of killing a bunch of kids in a Y league who were just learning the game at the time……
And, I hate the way he coaches. Conservative, pompous fuck…..
As I mentioned on the previous thread, I don’t see my Horns in a position to win this game. They just don’t have enough experience on defense to stop Goff. It’s going to take Charlie Strong a couple more years to clean up the mess that Mack Brown left behind. That being said, the Freshman Jerrod Heard brings a lot more excitement to the game as a real dual threat QB compared to Tyrone freaking Swoopes. Keep an eye on Texas true freshman LB Malik Jefferson. He is going to be a beast for the next couple of years before he follows the first round money to the pros. If Texas wins this game it will be their biggest upset in years.
Cal had one of, if not THE, worst defense in college football last year. No way they’ve fixed all those holes in one year and they’ve played 2 cupcakes so far this year. Texas has their problems but as you said Heard is going to be a real test for the Bear D. Really looking forward to the game.
Anyone but the Dodgers. And I’m not sure Texas can be described as a real team these days.
.
I guess I’d root for the Pirates. McCutchen is probably my favorite player in the game not wearing a Giant’s uni. I do want to see the Cubs lose, unless they play LA, because I don’t think I’m ready to see the Cubs as winners. I don’t have a clue what AL teams are in, and won’t care unless LA or the Cubs make it to the WS, at that point I’d become an AL fan
That was one hell of a catch by Perez!
Leake is not fooling anyone with his pitches today, plenty of ropes..
Just peeking in…..when was the last time we scored a run?
It would be cool if the Giants scored in this series.
I would like it to be KC vs. the Cubs in the WS.
The biggest X-factor of the playoffs is if Kershaw can finally get it done. If he chokes again, it may never happen for him.
Cubs or Pirates or Mets, in that order.
Cards have been there enough.
And, their bean ball garbage is getting old, courtesy of Larussa’s legacy.
Don’t give an S who’s there for the AL…
50 more at bats for Byrd to reach his option. If he gets there you guys can waive bye bye to De Aza.
Snarkk how do you think the Cal D holds up today.
Don’t know much about Texas. Other than they are in disarray as a program. Boo hoo. After Mack Brown screwed Cal out of the Rose Bowl in ’04 or whenever when Aaron Rogers was there, I’d like to see the Bears steamroll them today with extreme prejudice. Cal secondary is better for sure this year – they’ve got two guys named Darius on the corners, sophs, and after getting torched last season, they’ve made strides. Decent linebacking; the D line has only one returner from last season’s suckage line, which was dead last in Pac12 in sacks, and near bottom in the whole FCS. Coupla JC transfers in with better motors and quicker to put more Dline push into the QB. Altogether, the D looks improved quite a bit over total excrement, even given having played essentially two exhibition opponents so far. I’m hoping overall if the D can just be in the middle of the pack in the Pac12, Cal with its offense, will have a shot at maybe losing only 3 conference games. RB Lasco should not be overlooked. If he can get some yardage early on, they can do play action and Goff will go off, IMO. Texas defense has not seen anything close to a passer like Goff, and the burners Cal has at WR. If Cal can avoid turnovers, I think they should win. The only thing I wonder about is if it close at the end, whether Dykes can manage the game better to a win. Last few seasons, he sucked at managing late in those few close games Cal actually had…
cool synopsis. I am gonna watch an entire Cal football game, I think……
BTW, if there were any way the Niners could transport Goff over to Santa Clara, I’d make it happen. This kid would make them trade or release Kap. He can’t run much, but a great pocket presence, sees the field, and has an ACCURATE gun. The kid throws a sideline out route on a frozen rope like nobody’s business. When he fills out at 25-26, he should be a budding Brady, with the right team. That’s a big prediction, but I’ve seen the kid live 4-5 times now. Impressive. If Bill Walsh were alive and got a hold of this kid, man, look out. I’m just afraid some sorry ass franchise like Cleveland will draft him, and he’ll get creamed with sacks his first few years, have turnstile coaching staffs, and won’t get over it…
Cain is headed to the bullpen? For who? For what?
BTW, this incident with Kang of the Bucs at second the other day is BS.
I know supposedly it was within the rules, but this has to change. IMO this is way more egregious than the situation with Buster that forced that rule change. Here, the runner is allowed to slide/body block far away from the bag. Makes no sense. You have to slide into the 2nd base bag should be the rule. Kang unfortunately had his left leg planted instead of jumping up like you’re supposed to over there to avoid injury. The phantom tag at second for the DP and this kind of break up slide have to be reconciled somehow…
but that’s the issue. Kang didn’t get that leg out of the way. Kruk said “well, they don’t come in hard in South Korea so Kang’s not used to that.” Fuck that, he’s been playing ALL YEAR HERE. He should have jumped, there’s a reason why those injuries almost never happen–the defender does what he’s supposed to do every time. Or, almost every time.
And they HAVE fixed it. You used to be able to tackle a guy at 2nd base. That wild shit basically ended Kuip’s career as a starting infielder…..
by the way, I thought Holliday’s slide into Scoots was way more malicious and violent…..
for an old man, BYrd’s defense is fine. And he’s a better hitter than every outfielder we have except Pence. So, let’s see him get to 550 at bats.
I’m down with that.
Like I said before, I’m normally totally averse to signing old dudes. I’ll make an exception here. Byrd gives some stability to the OF, and some pop. I doubt he’ll lose a ton of bat speed over the winter. He’s a better fielder out there than Pat Burrell was, it’s not even close. I’d give this kid Parker as many ABs as he can get the last two weeks. He has some pop. Let’s see what he can do. Seriously, why do we need to see Perez any more? Put in Parker, Mac Williamson, etc. Let’s see these young dudes in action so decisions can be made…
Leake two starts vs. D-Backs: 8 2/3 IP, 9 runs, 19 hits, so he’s fit right in with the Giants.
The Giants look completely deflated. When the only guy in the LU having quality at bats is 000, you know something has gone deeply wrong.
Matt Cain mop up duty.
How quickly the Horse has fallen..
Leake has been very pedestrian since the trade, putting it mildly.
He’s doing everything to reduce his FA price. I’m not impressed. Is he really better than Heston? Or, bringing up Blackburn and letting the kid do some on the job training the first half of next season — while money possibly burned on Leake could be used to upgrade the outfield in a major way? Look how much a guy like Cespedes turned around the Mets. One big stick can turn around a whole team swagger factor, it gets contagious. Mets are dangerous…
well, at the price Leake will command on the FA market, I would say no, he’s not a better option than Heston or possibly Blackburn. I don’t want to get tied into a 5 year/100milly deal and find out this is who he really is…..
Yeah I’m down with bringing Byrd back. He’s a professional hitter, unlike DeAza who is just a Fred Lewis clone..
Why the hell is Cain even out there at this point? Shut him down already, wait ’til spring training and pray he’s got something left.
Over/under is 57.5 on the Cal/Texas game.
Seems low to me, even with Cal on the road…
Good luck trying to stay awake during this baseball game.
try watching college football for a couple hours AND THEN switching to the game. I’m now watching the Georgia game till the Cal game starts. My daughter is camping this weekend and I’m just marinating the shit out of a steak and watching sports on tv……
I took two dogs to get haircuts today. I’m rockin’! (grin)
I head somebody say on radio a while back that Heston and Leake are pretty much the same pitcher. Ground ball, sinker ball guys. Why have two of the same type in the rotation. They didn’t give up much for Leake, as is presently known, so I wouldn’t think they’re married to the guy already. Seriously, 5 years and $100M for Leake? That’s insane if he actually will command that kind of coin…
28 year old free agent hitting FA for the first time, he’s going to get a huge deal. Book it.
Yep, likely. Crap, Panda was a predictable weight disaster waiting to happen and got thrown nearly $100M in his direction…
With Leake, it really would be stealing money.
speaking of store bought marinade, what do you guys use? Wish Twin was around for this. I have used Soy Vey for a couple of years but some dude at the store today sold me on Chaka’s MMM sauce. I will hunt him down and murder him if he’s wrong about this. I take my BBQ seriously……
Another reason I’d like to see Cal beat TX to a pulp is to keep putting the Pac12 up there against the SEC as the best conference, top to bottom (yeah, I know TX is not the SEC). Bowls last year showed SEC overrated, IMO. They’re in love with themselves, as is ESPN. I’d seriously love to see Alabama and LSU and Auburn play a full season in the Pac12 now. Auburn almost lost, should have lost, to Jacksonville State, a Div II or whatever it’s called now. Still, Auburn is ranked 18th — that’s baloney. I think maybe, maybe one of those three SECs would make it to the Pac12 conference title game….
I was off radio for a while, came back, I had left when SF was down 3-0.
Miller was going on and on about the Potomac, the old presidential yacht, which he’s talked about many times before. I took that as a bad sign.
Yep, 6-0 Dbacks…
Shelve Belt for the season. He’s had concussion issues in/out most of the year. No reason to risk it anymore. Same with Blanco and Aoki. Shelve Pence. Shelve Craw. Let the healing begin. Panik’s already done. Play all the AAA guys, give the arms some innings, see who stands out, if any. Get them some big league time. It’s time to call it a season. Chi, sorry dude, but that white flag needs to go up the flag pole — and I’m thinking about going to tomorrow’s game…
Snarkk…So basically your saying the “Shelf Life of are players have expired for the season”🔦
Shell, shelf, shelve, something like that.
Speaking of BBQ steak, if this season were a Rib-eye, put a fork in it…
BBQ a Rib Eye later BF.
Soaking it with a Carrebban Jerk marinade from a bottle in a ziplock for a few hours/ hell longer even better.
But to me I really like the Grill Mates packages by McCormicks. They have a great selection like Smoky Ranchero,Tennessee Backyard Brew,Mojito Lime, Brown Sugar Bourbon etc etc their all good for steaks, chicken, ribs, fish..
Easy recipes just use 1/4 cup oil,2tbsp water,2tbsp white vinegar..
And they give you other suggestions on the packs if you want to zest it up some more, like adding a beer, or OJ or lime juice..
thanks. This is great info
Brady and Rogers.
Top QBs, right?
I think it not coincidental that both sat on the bench with clipboard and watched a coupla years. It’s hard to turn into an elite QB when you’re running for your life from game #1 in your rookie year…
Some guy on Baggs’ twitter commenting on the plaque Affeldt, sure to be gone after this season, should get on the Giants wall of fame:
“should be a bas-relief bag of Costco burger patties and a 10” knife”….
Actually I really want to see more innings down the stretch of what could be a new revamped BP next year.
Like the “Power Arms” we can work with, yeah their still green, but plenty of upside..
Talking about these 4 big size guys with 95MPH potential…Osich,Strickland,Broadway and Hall, they all should stick next year IMO
Strick better get rid of that gopher ball pitch.
Has to work on an out pitch. MLB batters can hit 97 mph straight gas…
True.
He needs a secondary pitch, probably the same with Broadway& Hall, but not Osich, he’s the real deal under pressure.
Another day,
Another Shutout
31 straight innings without a run against the D-Backs at home right now.. “Incredibly AWFUL”
i was waiting for someone to call out the innings w/o scoring number. Ugly.
I don’t think we’ll have to worry about the Dodgers clinching at AT&T.
Thank Keereist for small favors.
This season is lost because of (i) a rotation with wheels that came off, fairly predictable and some predicted it due to age of the rotation, and (2) unrelenting injuries to starters. Still, it had its moments. Entertaining baseball, for the most part. And, emergence of a a couple of players that should contribute in future — Duffy, Specs, Osich, maybe Strick, Byrd? Transition year…
I can’t even watch baseball on a Saturday once college football starts. Despite my UT alum alliances, I always held a soft spot for the Bears. I went to several Cal games as a kid but college football on the west coast (in terms of game day excitement) is a joke compared to that of any Texas school…Snarkk, you should have flown out for this game, I could of treated you to a Texas gameday experience. I may try and it make it out next year for the other side of the home and home.
Let’s do it.
I wouldn’t have minded a gameday at UT, a night on 6th street, and some BBQ at the Salt Lick over near Dripping Springs…
Crap, Chi.
You know the season is over, now.
Baer is at UT watching the UT/Cal game…
WJ.,
I’m a little torn for this game who to root for.
I’m a big Longhorn( Hookem Horns) fan growing up especially since my dad was born in Amarillo ( though he ended up going to Texas Tech Red Raiders for college) but I was born in SF, so their’s some roots for Cal also..
But I’ve been following Texas since the late 60 ‘s under Darrell Royal and the Wishbone backfield he made famous, just loved those teams!!
Here’s alittle trivia as well… The QB for the Longhorns back then when they we’re winning big time was a guy named James Street, who later had a son named Huston Street, who had a pretty decent baseball career I believe..
Well Kat, you gottta dance with he who brung ya.
Your right WJ.
Hookem Horns!!
Looks like this kid Jerrod Heard has some swagger, should be as Keith Jackson use to say : We got a real barn burner today!
That targeting rule is a fucking joke.
Watched a bigger hit in the Georgia game, and after the review a perfect hit at the shoulder pads, and the player stayed in the game. But your Right WJ, a BS controversial rule, to many gray area’s.
What stupid ass comment was that?
If you have a chance to take the QB down you need to do so,are a big play could happen.. Well No SHIT Sherlock…
Boy did Cal self destruct after having Texas backed up at the 5 and letting the Horns spank them going 95 yards for the TD..🏈
With a QB like Goff, I would never kick the ball.
Cal giving it away…
Cal making tons of mistakes, as they typically do on the road. Undisciplined. No push up front, they need to blitz. Secondary sucking again against a below average passer. The only thing stopping the Cal offense is themselves…
they do not look good. Texas isn’t that good.
About time the Horns defense gets to a QB for a big play.
I’ve got the Stanford game in the small pic on tv because I really wanted to watch Goff (and I think Stanford is going to get killed and they are headed toward that killing). Goff had a brilliant back shoulder td but otherwise has not played to his rep……
Not dead yet is Stanford, now 21-17, think they will still lose but cover the spread.
Just stopped themselves again with the Goff fumble and the follow up TD.
Wow now here comes Cal, this game looks like a total shoot out with neither team taking control.
A lot of Texas’s problems since Colt McCoy left is the lack of having anything close to a decent QB. Heard was the number one dual threat QB in the nation coming out of high school. Hopefully those issues will be a thing of the past. You can’t recruit in Texas for either side of the ball unless you have a QB that can bring it.
Embarrassing fake injury by Texas…
If Cal had a defense worth a darn, they could win 10 games…
That’s why you run the fucking ball. Fuck
Defensive struggle. 🙂
One of the reasons I am not a big Charlie Strong fan is that he doesn’t hire top coordinators. Mack Brown always made sure he hired the best coordinators money could buy. No fucking way he would have allowed his freshman QB throw the ball in that situation late in the half.
‘juice finally caught a ball. He’s been dropping them all year. Ballgame time. And there is no program or team I hate more than USC……
How about them Cardinals!
Great play call.pass, run option, showing cojones going for it, instead of settling for a FG.
Give Hogan credit he’s playing his best game ever..
it’s not his best game ever, IMO. He played better games at the end of last season. But they are surprising me after that shit game v NW and a very underwhelming game v the Florida team. I really like the fact that Shaw is finally opening up the game plan tho. Someone must have a gun to his head.
Nice to see both Cal&Stanford in 2 well played games going on.Been flipping back and forth. But well worth it..
Your games sound a lot more exciting than the 3-0 Ole Miss-Bama thriller I’m stuck with at work.
looks like Cal’s the real deal. entertaining game.
This is unacceptable play by the Horns. I do think Goff is the real deal….wow what a terrible face mask!
Looney has to be tossed for that flagrant face mask!
But he’s not?
Yet these ridiculous targeting penalties go either way.
Looney was targeting taking Heard’s head off and just 15 yards no ejection?
Listening to Joe Starkey on KGO for Cal game is like water torture. He is terrible, and getting worse. I wouid take friggin Kate Scott of KNBR over him…
Joe Starkey is a horse’s-ass homer. Some games he spends more time whining about the refs than calling what’s happening. Back when the Berkeley tree people temporarily shut down work on the stadium upgrade work, Starkey carved time out of his game work to rail against those protesters. Any clip of The Play shows him for what he really is–a guy suffering from sort of debilitating fanatical hysteria. The weird screaming is the tell.
I said the over looked good for this Cal/TX game. Crap, it’s not even close to the under…
This is where Sonny needs to be smart, run some clock, but try to get a few first downs. It’s crunch time, Cal needs to figure out how to close out a game…
Not only is Goff a helluva QB but he can put down a sweet pooch punt.
TX is still alive. This Bear defense can give up chunks of yardage in a hurry…
Now Do you onside kick or try to stop Goff?
Strong made a fatal mistake by challenging the short dive by Heard and losing that timeout.
This is looking like a Sonny finish. Crunch time is an impending disaster…
No pressure kid.
Bears should just all out blitz, force a fumble, something. This prevent is just crazy…
Did Texas score too soon?!?
Miss!
Wow…
Unfucking real. Fuck me
Well, let’s see if Cal can muff the onsides kick…
the national announcers sure are disappointed about that missed extra point. fuck em.
I hope Cal finds a way to run the table. That’s the only way I will feel better about that finish.
Back to the drawing board for the Cal defense.
It looked better in two games early, but this was a total cave in during the second half.
Sonny continues to game manage like an idiot, as I predicted, at crunch time…
