Losing and More Losing

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 30, 2016

Giants going against someone named Reynaldo Lopez. He’s got an ERA in the 11’s. I’m sure that’s nothing a triple play or two couldn’t fix.

I’m guessing Nunie gets let loose today at the top of the LU. The o/u on number of times his helmet flies off while running the bases has been set at 1.5. Let the betting begin….

Pence back today. He and Nunie will at least give this shit LU a different look.

We need a shake up. Flip the spread. Whatever. Upside down time.

Hopefully, Jake will keep them under 6 runs in 5 innings (last line against the Reds) One can hope I guess.

Last 7 starts for Smarg – 4,5,4,2.4.6.6 runs allowed. Ugh.

I was at a bar tonight here in Saigon that had baseball on, Fox Sports Asia. St. Louis in Miami. Not live, obviously (actually, sometimes it’s cool to find baseball on Fox Sports Asia here because it’s tape delay and they’ve taken out all of the ‘non action’ so the game flies by.) I was amazed. I mean…. the batters were actually getting hits. With runners in scoring position. And there was this pitcher for the Cards named Leake, and he looked good. I thought, damn, why can’t we get pitchers like that…… I joke. Sort of. I agree, Craig, need to shake things up, man. They’re working on pissing away a season that can be theirs for the taking. I’m no doomer. But this team is f-ing dead ass right now and needs to come out of it. August and September, it’s crunch time. Glorious baseball time. Sheesh, at least make it interesting already….. Pence back. That will help. If this stretch has been just a *correction*, fine. Stop it at that.

Have the Baseball Gods finished having their fun with us yet? I mean, what the hell can they do at this point? They have used the injury bug to a heavy degree and starting out, the replacements played well and SF continued to win. Somehow, Buster, Belt and Crawford go south pretty much all at once. No core. Bum gets cained, Cueto has a bad inning and Sam-etc is still in the slogging mode.

Can they top last night’s triple play with the bases jammed and nobody out? Cleanup hitter lines out and the pins fall. Hit it on the nose and where does it go. BIBP odds for this team have gone through the roof and are soaring somewhere in outer space. For a finale, the new acquisition Nunez can’t quite get the job done with runners in scoring position in the bottom of the 9th.

I mean, what the hell can the BBG’s come up with next? Even Loki, the Norse Trickster God has been consulted. That Triple Play was probably his scheme. Isn’t it about time this thing flips?

I’ve got no confidence for the Giants in this game today. They’re up against some kid who has pitched once before in MLB. Against the Doghairs, and they K’d 9 times against him… while crushing his ass with 6 runs in 4+ innings. Just the kind of kid the Giants do jack shit against. He’s not a junk baller, so there is a thimble of hope. Then, there’s Peavy. I implore Boch to employ the 5 inning rule. That is, if Peavy even gets there without giving up a couple of 2 or 3 run bombs. After a 2-9 post AS game start, this ain’t dooming. It’s reality. I do think it has to get better now, the triple play last night had to be the nadir. Hopefully Pence does something to energize this comatose, dauber-on-the-floor squad. I guess I’ll have to start chewing on my SF cap, because I thought there was no way he’d be back this quickly off of hammy surgery. Fingers crossed on that’s not rushed. Giants need more moves to shake this shit up. LA will make a big move of some sort. Book that…

  6. wilcojoe said, on July 30, 2016 at 11:16 am

I agree the Dodgers are sensing blood in the water and they will make a big move or two. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they make a run at Sale, though I think he goes to Texas.

  7. snarkk said, on July 30, 2016 at 11:33 am

Giants total failure to grow real MLB quality outfielders in their system is biting them now. Pence back certainly should help. But, when he’s out, the Giants OF is one of the worst in baseball. Normally, an outfield is the source of at lease SOME power bats, and good plate production, in any case. Span has turned into pretty much a nothing offensively, and questionable base running. Not a threat to steal. His defense is OK, but a rag arm. If this is all he provides, CF looks like a mess offensively over his contract term. Hopefully willieD’s take last night is right, and Pagan and Blanco are gone next year, and the team gets younger. Parker has to prove he’s not a strike out artist, and Williamson shows promise and is growing in his good ABs, but still, both look like a crapshoot. It looks like this OF gets appreciably better the next few seasons only by trades. But, since the Giants need starters next year, they can’t empty the minor league stable totally of all their starter prospects as trade bait. Thankfully, with all the sellouts, the Giants will have money to burn to at least try to secure OF talent…

    • Carstie Clausen said, on July 30, 2016 at 12:11 pm

Snarkk: On the RH side you will find a line: “SF Minor League Stats”. Check the OFers from Richmond clear on down through Salem-Keizer. From my read, the pipeline does not appear empty, but one to three years away depending on the individual.

  8. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on July 30, 2016 at 11:41 am

I was kinda hoping they’d pick up a decent starting pitcher and just plug him in to the 3rd or 4th spot and down-size both Cain and Peavy to splitting the 5th spot, Cain pitches the 1st 4 innings, Jake the next 4 or 5. If they can do that, it’s a decently pitched game and saves the pen.

    • Carstie Clausen said, on July 30, 2016 at 12:12 pm

Shared starter load for the #5. Not a bad idea. Could be workable with that pair. Cain would get the start as he’s been with the team through the entire run of rings.

So, on Mon I head off to central Oregon to spend a week with my mom and sister and begin the 10 day process of picking my daughter up who has been in Sun Valley for the last 3 weeks. But that’s Monday. Today I am playing Del Mar on TVG, drinking beers, eating Cho’s pot stickers and watching (hopefully) Nunie run around the base paths like the damn Road Runner. Les go!

If they are, we’ll take the opportunity to remind them that the Dodgers haven’t been in the World Series in 27 years, and that’s always very amusing to us.

As Rodney Dangerfield once said, “I am FROSTED!” Between eight days of 100+ temps, the fucking Giants being 1-21 w/RISP for this series (0-6 today), and Peavy getting jobbed (he should have been outta the inning before giving up that bomb), I am ready to start throwing large, sharp objects.

  34. snarkk said, on July 30, 2016 at 2:10 pm

Well, hopefully that’s the only 2 run dinger Peavy gives up in 5, certainly not unexpected. Meanwhile, Giants going the usual oh for the game in RISP so far. Why doesn’t Bochy try something different with 2 runners on and no outs instead of sitting on his ass waiting for Godot to get a double or triple? Hit and run, run and hit, bunt for a hit and make the defense make a play (or a mistake), something, anything different. Yeah, you risk making outs, but WTF? We’ve waited for Godot for the entire post-AS break…

    • chipower9 said, on July 30, 2016 at 2:55 pm

Previous two starts (and then including today), Peavy has given up seven hits, five have been round trippers. All it takes is one mistake.

      • wilcojoe said, on July 30, 2016 at 2:36 pm

      • chipower9 said, on July 30, 2016 at 2:56 pm

Blanco missed the cut-off last night, too. Cost them a run. I will cut Panik some slack…he’s been out a while and has some rust to knock-off.

Me, I am writing this from the prone position. Threw my back out this morn digging a hole to bury our cat which fell victim to my rath after last night’s loss. Still trying to figure out a good excuse to tell my wife to account for the quadraped’s disappearance … open to suggestions.

Blade…you should have posted Prince Oberyn’s head being crushed like a grapefruit as a better reflection on the state of the Gigantes…I am so happy to have been sound asleep as the game started last night. Ibwould have flipped out on that triple play.

Watching the replay today, Span taking a tumble at first also may have affected his cognizance of what was going on. FP on the Mats broadcast made a concussion reference with span that I was unaware of. Must have been from last season…if he thought that was a one-hopper, the last thing he wanted to do was get thrown out at home so he darted home. I dont fault him. Just the state the Gigantes are in…..Frankly, Mr. Shankly…

I see behind home plate the notifications about Perry’s statue being unveiled on the 13th. My daughter and I will be there on the 14th…looking forward to checking it out. I still say Kent should have gotten one before Gaylord, HOF, or not.

    • gianthead said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:33 pm

Totally totally agree. Kent may be the most underrated player last quarter century…

Don’t know if we are just super unlucky or our baserunners are retarded:) Span last night and Pence now. Watch the damn ball…

    • chipower9 said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:08 pm

I think it is a bit of both. But in the field and on the base paths, they are just not playing good fundamental ball. That shit has got to change.

Anyone taken the ferry in from Vallejo to the yard before? Looking for any tips, etc.

    • snarkk said, on July 30, 2016 at 5:59 pm

Vallejo to ATT on the water sounds like a bit of a long trip?…

  62. wilcojoe said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:13 pm

I think on Monday morning we will see the Giants get a reliever or two. Those little deals go down every five minutes on the last day. My pick: Seattle closer Steve Cishek if the Mariners decide to sell.

    • blade3colorado said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:39 pm

Joe, I love Cishek, but we have little or no chance to get him. I can’t even imagine them entertaining the thought of trading him.

      • wilcojoe said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:44 pm

If the Astros and Rangers could put a little bit of a cushion on their lead they would be in full sell mode. I don’t think they have a chance to make the postseason. Root for them to lose today and tomorrow. Lol!

      • blade3colorado said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:46 pm

By the by, do you have any Anthony DeSclafani in your tourneys today? Just a hunch, but I think he is an excellent value play (especially since he is pitching in SD and shut them down for 51 FD points over a month ago). Again, only an inexpensive hunch.

    • blade3colorado said, on July 30, 2016 at 4:03 pm

Joe, did you see my Anthony DeSclafani post?

      • wilcojoe said, on July 30, 2016 at 4:17 pm

I actually do have him in my tourney that’s just starting.

      • wilcojoe said, on July 30, 2016 at 4:21 pm

I am doing really well in an early slate tourney but I have Smly and he just gave up a two run bomb and is at 70 fucking pitches thru 4. I had Happ and a Blue Jay stack, so I just need this fucker to get me about 20pts to guarantee a three figure payday.

    • blade3colorado said, on July 30, 2016 at 4:25 pm

Good luck Joe . . . Hope you get it.

      • wilcojoe said, on July 30, 2016 at 4:33 pm

It’s not going to happen. I will be lucky to win $20 now. I just can’t get two starters to dominate to save my life.

  64. gianthead said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:31 pm

I was just bantereing with some buddies back home and one mentioned the idea of trading Belt. I’m not sure what the market would be for Belt (since everyone is throwing the shift at him and he has not responded well, I’m not sure he brings back major players in return). But I then threw out the comment that if there was anyone to trade that would be momentous it would be Posey and that probably the only person I deal Posey for would be a package to get Trout. Anyone here would make that deal? Not sure that would even be of interest to the Angels.

If we traded Posey, who in baseball would be worth bringing back in such a blockbuster. We would need at least one major slugger and a #2 level starter I would think. Josh Donaldson one potential slugger?

    • wilcojoe said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:49 pm

I will say it until I am blue in the face. Belt would be a perfect fit in Houston. In a lineup full of fence swingers, they desperately need someone who can get on base and isn’t afraid to take a walk. First base has been a black hole for them since Berkman left. He is exactly what the Astros need and they should overpay to get him. They certianly have the prospects to make it happen.

    • chipower9 said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:52 pm

      Ain’t happening. Dream on…

      • wilcojoe said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:55 pm

Chi it would never happen now (the Giants need proven pitching not blue chip prospects) but in the offseason it would make perfect sense.

      • wilcojoe said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:57 pm

And by the way, you’re only saying that because of Belt’s timely hit. ๐Ÿ˜‰ You haven’t exactly been his biggest fan.

    Maybe the worm is turning?

    • gianthead said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:50 pm

They are looking more like the Giants we knew earlier this year…smardjaramjam is turning into a bit of a disappointment after a solid start. They need to work him in the off-season on a new pitch or something with pitching strategy.

Otherwise maybe pursuing another starter in the off-season you can slot as a #3 starter (a lefty would be bitchin) and moving smardjaramjam into the 4th slot an idea…

      • gianthead said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:51 pm

Damn it…thunderstorm cut my signal after Belt base hit:(

      • chipower9 said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:53 pm

From what I can tell Shark’s biggest problem of late has been his location (same with Cain). You leave a pitch up in the zone as frequently as those two, you are going to pay.

  70. chipower9 said, on July 30, 2016 at 4:13 pm

Gun that fucker DOWN! GHead, now tell me why the fuck would we want to trade Posey? (Trout and a number two starter might get me thinking about it). Not sure how the money matches up…too fucking lazy to go see what Trout is making.

    • gianthead said, on July 30, 2016 at 4:26 pm

Since I cant see the damn play:(

But I’m also not advocating a trade but speculating on what could we get for him. Would you not take Trout for Posey and others??? Trout is going to be a bigger offensive producer over the next 10 years than Posey. Both should be hall of famers but going into next season, what will be the biggest need for our team for the future???

Just say no to Jay Bruce. would have liked Melancon but he is a rental. Strick looked good, right?

    Satisfying win.
Did not catch more than glimpses as finally the Northwoods just today segued outta tropical rainforest conditions and working outside at somewhat sweaty tasks actually turned out rather pleasant and productive.
This game was Buster’s Baby. Those two caught stealings stole Washington’s thunder ~ particularly when he nailed Harper in the 8th after that 4 pitch freebie by Lopez. Taking down the potential first run of a comeback inning and the heart of the Gnats’ offense, took the heart out of their offense psychologically. Then back to the top of the 5th he also nailed leadoff man Ben Revere. To top all of the defensive prowess the Giants demonstrated today, he also ignited the winning rally in the bottom of the 7th. Perfect timing to take the Giants first lead of the game. Trade Buster? Hah!

Crawford desperately needed the blow and Giants got second day service from their latest acquisition Ed Nunez, providing early returns on the trade with the Twins a couple days ago with that 4th inning 2RBI double. A single and a stolen base can be added to his contribution.

Belt’s single following Buster’s in the winning inning, followed by that walk drawn by Pence set up Panik’s sacrifice fly, followed quickly by Brown and Blanco adding to the free pass parade and spotted that vital insurance run. Trade Buster OR Belt? You gotta be kidding. Here you got Pagan leading off and going 0-5, though sacrificing in a run. BB9 was 1-1 with THREE walks, batting waaaay down in the order. BELT FOR the TWO-HOLE. He’s kinda shy about being a big RBI man, but batting 2nd or even back to 3rd and he’s gonna score a pile.

Pence’s impact was more psychological than anything else. He added an edge, drew a walk in a key situation. Brown keeps showing that he can be a weapon off the bench as well as doing a more than merely competent job as Buster’s backup.

Leading into the top of the 7th Washington had to stand before the Law. Two quick outs quieted them a bit. Turner laced a 2-out single, but was promptly stranded by another quick out. With 4 wins now under his belt including the team’s page-turning 60th, Derek Law has shown the moxie to become a pretty successful win vulture.

The experiment of plunking Gillaspie in the pivotal 3-hole will come to a quick closure after today’s embarrassing 0-5. Too much pressure. He might could handle 7th fairly well and 8th as a threat preceeding the pitcher.

In almost two full innings, after the departure of Peavy, Mr. Strickland gave up nothing but goose-eggs in 1.2 IP. Perhaps he’s found his niche. Could he add just one more effective pitch and become one of the most effective firemen in MLB? That would depend on how much Bochy values that forgotten critical role. Bailing out the Giants most recently added LH reliever was not high-pressure, but he got the job done fine. One step at a time.

With Romo back and most frequently effective, Casilla maintained his mojo and sealed the deal. What are we seeing here? Roles are getting more refined teamwide as of today’s victory. Strickland as the fireman; Law shutting them down in quick order. Romo and Casilla relaxing back into their primacy. All good.

Buster was not alone, but stood out in today’s win. It was a great team effort by and large and they kept their cool and maintained station. It developed even after Panik lining into that killer DP in the bottom of the 5th, making it look to all the world that Loki was still lurking and that today was gonna be like yesterday with another liner leading to a very rare form of triple play. But the bottom of the 5th proved to be the nadir of today’s game as the Aesir of this game told Loki to play elsewhere for awhile because with the presence of that new addition and the two returned wounded warriors the Giants got their spirit back.

Still abuzz after a bunch of weeding-composting then back to the hacienda and read over the gameview and box on SFGate coverage. Inspired.

    • blade3colorado said, on July 30, 2016 at 7:52 pm

Ronald Reagan was famous for what Stix does . . . You should get paid Stix. ๐Ÿ™‚

“One of his responsibilities was to give accounts of Chicago Cubs baseball games via telegraph. During one game between the Cubs and their arch rivals the St. Louis Cardinals that was tied 0-0 in the 9th inning, the telegraph went dead: An often repeated tale of Reagan’s radio days recounts how he delivered “play-by-play broadcasts” of Chicago Cubs baseball games he had never seen. His flawless recitations were based solely on telegraph accounts of games in progress.”

      • Carstie Clausen said, on July 30, 2016 at 8:42 pm

Thanks Blade. Problem for me is that if it does not have to do with Giants baseball i do have this tendency to get “off message” as the elite phrase it.

    • blade3colorado said, on July 30, 2016 at 7:55 pm

Addendum: Once in 1934, during the ninth inning of a Cubs – St. Louis Cardinals game, the wire went dead. Reagan smoothly improvised a fictional play-by-play (in which hitters on both teams gained a superhuman ability to foul off pitches) until the wire was restored. (Wikepedia.org)

  82. blade3colorado said, on July 30, 2016 at 7:32 pm

Amazed at Justin Verlander. Unlike Tim Lincecum, Verlander was able to resurrect his career. I thought he was absolutely done 2 seasons ago and fast forward to last season and this season, he is far from finished. Tonight, I wasn’t able to see him pitch, but followed him closely as I had him in a few FD and DK tourneys. He pitched a complete game against Houston, with 11 Ks, 2 earned runs, and with his team down 2-1, somehow the Tigers pulled ahead of the Astros, giving Verlander the well-deserved victory, 3-2. His FD score was 66 points and DK was 41.15.

Damn, I wish Lincecum could have resurrected his career, but by most measures, most people would agree, Timmy had the more satisfying career with the 2 CYs and 3 WSs. In my opinion, both are supreme athletes and deserve the success they’ve attained in MLB.

I actually do have one snarkk. This is the first home I’ve ever owned that came with one installed. (The water here is horrid) it is definitely an older model (now discontinued) and we had a bit of a hassle getting the two replacement cartridges.

Ours is a ‘Premier’ but because this the first time owning one I cannot say I recommend it more than any other. When we first installed the new cartridges the water looked quite grey for about a week. I learned that was because of the slow absorption of water into the filters and the greyness was simply caused by microscopic bubbles. It cleared up and the water tastes fine.

Gregor Blanco has made major contributions to 2 championships and is still a valuable player for us. He may not be back next year, but this year he deserves to stay and will come through like he always has…

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on July 30, 2016 at 10:23 pm

Yeah, I was thinking about that, Loo. Why does “statue” have to mean “ancient history”? If/when Timmy finally hangs them up (could be soon), he should get a statue immediately. He helped turn the franchise around. Why wait? Hell, for that matter, start sculpting one of MadBum on a horse…. Bonds, obviously too.

    • bassbaldy said, on July 30, 2016 at 10:24 pm

You are right Loo … my “seconding” snarkk’s fantasy chief executive board motion was more of playing along with a joke … good fun but not heart felt.. In my heart of hearts, I believe Blanco’s contribution, overall deserves more than being kicked to the curb and in truth, he really is still a reasonably productive player.

      • snarkk said, on July 30, 2016 at 11:05 pm

      • bassbaldy said, on July 30, 2016 at 11:25 pm

Oh I believe you are serious. And your practicality is probably the right way to go. I think you are right that both Parker & Mac will only get better with time in the bigs. Blanco, on the other hand, has had his time, reached his peak. I think he can still contribute but the youngsters are the future and that’s more important. I’m just way too much of a sentimentalist. I couldnt pull the trigger on dfa-ing White Shark.

So, Pads get rid of Kemp, get nobody they want in return and still have to pay mucho dinero to Kemp? Does a player who is DFAd still get paid? None of this trade makes sense. I get that Oliveras has been in trouble with the law and that he is no spring chicken … but wtf?

Absolutely no idea. Plus it’s the Pads and Braves, kind of meaningless in a way…. Kemp should probably go to the AL to be a DH in his last years….

Yeah, two completely inconsequential clubs but such a strange transaction no matter what teams are involved.

Snark and Blade…. Both of the candidates are crazy scary. Hillary has classified docs on her home computer. Says oops. I was careless…. Not a trump guy so save the hate mail..We are all screwed no matter who wins…Hard to imagine these two are the best America has to offer. Where if Jed Bartlett when you need him:)
Thank god Craig has given us the Flap for the Giant fans to have an escape against these losers…

Lastly.. Only the Giants lame medical staff would say Span is ok to bunt, but since he has a strained quad maybe he can but but not run????Idiots. He has been lousy so not like losing a great player..but really??? He can’t play because of a muscle strain but lets let him do a bunt and see if he can hurt himself sprinting to 1st if the bunt is bad. I’m sure that never happens!!
