Time For 2002 R(even)ge?
Ashamed to admit I didn’t make it to the end of that game, not by a long shot. I did what I normally do when I don’t see the end, I opened up my lap top and went to the Flap.
590 comments. Either something really good or something really bad happened.
Or both….
I read through the highs and lows, then went to mlb.com to see it for myself. I don’t really think you can understate this Gillaspie thing. For starters, I can now spell his last name without having to look it up. That in itself is a miracle. Driving down the hill to Safeway this morning I was listening to the KNBR guys jizzing the radio waves and heard that lefties are hitting .122 off Chapman in his career. He had never given up a triple before last night. And had that been a park normally configured his no-triples record would still be in tact (cue: Diggity’s grass roots effort to get the park changed).
I’m just glad we got at least one. I watched the Red Sox game and as it wound down you could just see how desperate and disappointed all those players were. Swept out of the post season at home. Screw that.
I’d like to lather up the hate for Lackey tonight but I just don’t have it in me. That 2002 game wasn’t won by him it was lost by Dusty for starting Livan. And do you remember who are two pinch hitters were that game?
Shingo and Tom Goodwin. We never stood a chance in Game 7.
Instead of talking about tonight’s game I want to bring back and old quote from the past. It was 2012 and the Giants were down 2-0 to the Reds. Hunter Pence gathered the team around him. Retold by Tim Flannery, I’ll let The Reverend take it from here…..
“GET IN HERE, EVERYONE GET IN HERE..LOOK INTO EACH OTHER EYES..NOW! LOOK INTO EACH OTHERS EYES, I WANT ONE MORE DAY WITH YOU, IT’S THE MOST FUN, THE BEST TEAM I HAVE EVER BEEN ON SAID THE REVEREND HUNTER PENCE. ” AND NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS WE MUST NOT GIVE IN, WE OWE IT TO EACH OTHER, PLAY FOR EACH OTHER, I NEED ONE MORE DAY WITH YOU GUYS, I NEED TO SEE WHAT THERIOT (JERRY) WILL WEAR TOMORROW, I WANT TO PLAY DEFENSE BEHIND VOGELSONG BECAUSE HE’S NEVER BEEN TO THE PLAYOFFS..PLAY FOR EACH OTHER NOT YOURSELF, WIN EACH MOMENT, WIN EACH INNING, IT’S ALL WE HAVE LEFT”
Now go out there and do what you do with your Even Year Bullshit……
I want to throw rocks at windows or something. Beat rag dolls with a baseball bat. Chop wood. Wave a rake. Something.
Nice to not feel *heartbroken* about this, actually. *Disgusted* probably will fade faster than heartbroken.
let’s hope so . . . sure glad this is not an elimination in, say, 2010
If this is not the worst Giants loss in the modern era, I don’t know what is.
The starting pitching in 2017 should be outstanding . . . .
Unless they trot Cain and his contract out there to start the season…
Agree, James. Lots of time for reflection over the off-season. Gotta feel fairly good about the starting rotation, so there’s that. Infield also. Outfield needs someone new, young, powerful. Bullpen needs to be blown up. And, a new manager to tie it all together. That’s really not too much work for the front office…………………..
Let the stories come out now about what the hell was really happening in this clubhouse the second half…
…because something was rotten in Copenhagen
Yeah, I still think someone was boffing someone else’s wife or something like that… :-p
He boffed her……and then he fucked her!
Baseball is dead to me.
I’m with you…
Long story, but I couldn’t watch or listen the last 3-4 innings. When I left off, it was 5-2. Unbelievable. Maybe a blessing I didn’t see or hear it all go down. Painful to go back and see the tide turning reflected by the posts on here.
The fixes for next year are simple;
1) overpay for a closer;
2) sayonara to Casilla, Lopez and Romo and that is about $21 million on savings;
3) one big right-handed bat to hit cleanup for either left field or first; and
4) health.
I think we saw the real Panik this series that people wanted to give up on even though he is young and cheap. He at 100% will be back in the two hole. Nunez healthy will be the lead-off but Gillaspie deserves to be back and getting some starts. And with a real cleanup, the rest of the lineup falls into place with Pence hitting 5th and Belt 6th.
And of course a health issue with Pagan ends up being huge.
Pretty much agree. Pagan’s back really didn’t factor in, they got 5 runs tonight. You gotta hold onto a 3 run lead after 8 frames…
I agree snarkk but Blanco failed so miserably a couple of more runs would have really helped…
Pagan, Span, and Pence really showed their age. Pence was painful to watch. Hope he rests a LOT in the off-season. Outfield must become younger.
All 3 of those players represent pretty big risks next year.
Top of the 9th happened so fast we couldnt break out the Rally Stix in time…
I think Pence is still hurt somehow.
He was nearly useless offensively in the playoffs. And, weird defensive moves in the outfield…
God I hate Greg Papa. No I don’t have to root for the Cubs. Fuck the Cubs. Fuck the goat, Harry Caray and Theo Epstein.
Done with the rest of this though I suppose I’d like to see Dusty get in and win one.
So, who’s the manager next year? Steve Decker?
That would probably make sense, seems the org has been grooming him…
Because I don’t hate the Dodgers any more than the next opponent, the only possible pleasure left in the off-season is to see the Cubs 100+ year streak continue. Why would anyone who isn’t a Cubs fan want to see it end?
If they happen to win it, I think Cubs fans will rue the day they win a WS.
There goes the “lovable losers” mystique…
Cubs wont lose the pennant, let’s see about the World Series…
Bochy totally predictable post-game, not explaining anything.
Moore had done his job, “he had gone far enough”.
We had all the guys “lined up” for match-ups. As if they hadn’t been lined up X times before and blown the gig?
What pablum…
I’m pretty much over it now. If I watched that, I’d throw an empty through my TV. . . .
Gaaaah! What were the 32 blown saves made from Boch? It’s like he’s backing out of HOF consideration
No. they’ll turn into Red Sox fans and expect the world to bow at their feet and think the playoffs is their God given right.
Romo huckle chuckling (again) when Bochy came out and got him is telling. Not sure what it tells, but it ain’t good. This goes to Baggarly saying there was definitely Pen agitation with Bochy. I’m sure we’ll hear more about this now that the season is over…
I always thought Decker was also the one being groomed. But some one mentioned Brenly a couple of weeks ago and I am a big fan of Bud Black as well…
Brenly’s been out of the org for decades. I doubt he has any juice at all with the Giants…
I think it’s pretty easy to see what happened with the pen.
Romo was pissed offfnthat Bochy kept trotting Casilla out there game after game while Romo didn’t get a shot until numerous blown saves. And the clamor got deafening.
The quick hook just was extra added sauce.
KNBR call ins pretty overwhelmingly so far ripping Bochy, including people at the game.
Very unusual in Bochy’s post-2009 tenure. Natives are restless…
Well, good nite 2016 season…
Bruce did his job, miraculously and splendidly, taking over after Alou, getting thru the awful post-Bonds years, and bringing home 3, count ’em, 3 championships. He’s got nothing left to prove. I don’t want to crucify the guy, he’s been our Yoda. But even Yoda got old. It’s just time to change things up.
It’s baffling. Moore is left in to throw 130-plus pitches for a no-hit bid against the Dodgers with a month left in the season. But in a die-or-die situation and no guarantee he’ll pitch again this season he’s taken out at 120.
do-or-die…
Yeah… they didn’t, and they died.
I’m wit you Mac..The more i think about it the more annoying it becaomes. Even if we won, and won Thursday he would have a week off..Damn
Romo has to go. His laughing shit is old, and annoying considering he would have been the closer tonight with a longer leash had he not blown it the day before. Almost as bad as casilla getting mad for being pulled after his many failures…
Seems clear the only guys who will still be left from 2010 will be our battery…
Pagans absence hurt a lot. Not a huge fan, but a giant upgrade over Blanco
…and Cain. Sadly I don’t see Giants eating that contract…
Peavy 13M
Pagan 10M
Romo 8M
Casilla 6.5 M
Lopez 5M
Blnco 3.9 M
$46.4 Mil off the books, with raises to A few guys like Panik and nunez
was it worse than 2002? certainly faster and stupider
Yes. That was a WS clincher when we had none….
i suppose you are totally right; i am looking through a prism of the moment, a dark prism
maybe Bochy has changed the game forever by proving how overrated matchups can be. hell, Chapman had no trouble. righty or lefty. didnt matter
I am with my good man, bozo:’we gave it a run’ and indeed, with all the second half failures we popped alive at the end of the season and into the playoffs. I was on the side of the offense taking most of the blame for our poor play, but after tonight the bullpen wins.
The Chicago Cubs are a team built to win. Theo must get some props. And we played them tough all year and gave them good reason to doubt themselves during the NLDS. Unfortunately I believe they left their goat in our yard and we may have problems getting rid of it.
Power hitters do not want to play here. But I never understood pitchers not wanting to. While the front office takes their pice of the the responsibility pie they will also be the most challenged to improve in the off season.
I do not see another manager that can be an upgrade over Bruce, even with his gut off the mark this year, but I have always liked Bud Black.
Even when he was injured Nunez did his part in helping the team by getting Conor in there.
How many times have the Gmen taken another team’s bullpen to the woodshed and won games? I hated seeing it happen to us.
As poorly as the team played this year and with fortuna spinneth against us, we still battled the best team in baseball (2016) to a stand still. Almost.
See you around the hot stove.
Go Gigantes!
well said but it really doesnt make me feel better….not yet
Both lame manging, so the bigger game makes it more painful, but not by much. Seems like if we pulled it off the Nats or Dodgers would have been easy…GRR
Getting past the Cubs was probably the most difficult challenge the team would have; agree the G’s could’ve probably beaten LA or the Nats. But honestly, in the end, I’m happy we got to see some post-season baseball; the Mets game was exciting, as was the 1 win against Chicago. In early September, I didn’t lose hope, but I did sort of lose faith and figured their downward spiral would take them out of the playoffs altogether. It didn’t, they survived to give us something. Hopefully the front office has learned some things about the current team and what must be done to bring it back to elite status again.
Bill Walsh said 10 years coaching in one place is usually enough. Bill Walsh was a very smart man…
