All’s Quiet in the Bay Area

Is there any buzz about the Giants and Cespedes out west?
Back here, I’d say the media vibe is he ain’t comin’ back…

Not only is there no buzz about this but I can’t recall there being a less buzzy start to an off season. There is NOTHING getting talked about, Giants related, in the Bay Area media. I’m not actually sure what the media even does out here. The Niners are so bad the radio talk show guys seem to be actively avoiding discussing them. The Raiders get a little buzz but for a team that just took over the AFC lead, you’d think there would be more. The Dubs get most of the airtime on KNBR these days.

I will be shocked if we get Cespedes. Can’t see us being anything more than a bargaining chip for him to get a little more money somewhere else…..

Z: Got my little 97 GrandAm through some half melted snow on my long driveway with the help of some wood ashes for added traction and drove to Brrrrmidji (40 miles one way) to catch a shower and do some grocery shopping. At one of the stores i checked out all the baseball mags and noted that Sporting News piece projecting SF at 97 wins in an Even year. Mucho Kewl.

Also the only other mag which did projections and predictions noted that the Giants would win the NLW. May be a bit hard to slip beneath the radar after all that, but the respect is long overdue and much welcomed.

I don’t know about everyone else, but I’m not all in on Cespedes. The contract (years and $s) would be a bitch and I’m concerned that in a couple of years Cespedes and Posey would become the highest paid 1B platoon in the MLs. Did he get injured in the second half last year? Because those second half splits sure dropped off. A very small sample size, but he sure hasn’t hit well in SF. I don’t know…

    • Flavor said, on November 7, 2016 at 7:41 am

      I’m 100% off signing him.

  2. chipower9 said, on November 7, 2016 at 7:42 am

To answer Loo’s question, I have heard a bit of chatter with some of the KNBR jocks, but nothing from confirmed sources that there is anything shaking between the Giants and Mets. I am with John on taking a pass on Cespedes. Don’t get me wrong – I would LOVE to see us add a bona-fide closer (FIRST priority, IMO) AND a power-hitting LFer, but not Cespedes.

On the bright side, or negative side (all depends on your perspective), ~103 days until pitchers and catchers report for our San Francisco Giants.

  3. blade3colorado said, on November 7, 2016 at 7:45 am

Down with what John just said. No interest in Cespedes. I rather have Shotgun Hampton or Buzz Saw patrolling left (can either hit a curve?). Next . . .

Looks like Bud Black will be the Rockies’ new manager.

  5. blade3colorado said, on November 7, 2016 at 8:31 am

. . . Or take a flyer on Eric Thames. The last 3 years he has been tearing up the S. Korean league, e.g., 37 plus HRs each season and high batting average. Probably could be had for a song. Moreover, I just checked the rest of the FA outfielders available and they all have STIFF written beside each of their names. Meh. Here’s some info on Thames . . .

    http://jaysjournal.com/2016/11/05/blue-jays-outfield-targets-wild-card-eric-thames/

Wow! Good selection by the Rockies. Surprised at their competence in selecting Black as their manager.

I would agree that it’s pretty un-buzzy out-West right now about baseball. I guess it can be under-estimated how traumatizing (baseball-wise) it was the way the season ended for the Giants, with that 9th inning meltdown. (Although it wasn’t really that big of a surprise.) It takes some recovery time. I know I’ll be fully recovered in a few weeks. Especially when the weather gets much colder, and the warmth of Spring, and Spring Training starts to entice.

am i reading Stix post correctly? He drove 40 miles to take a shower?

    • chipower9 said, on November 7, 2016 at 11:07 am

That is the way I read it. Wow…

    • Bozo said, on November 7, 2016 at 11:41 am

Yeah, that’s how I read it.
I gotta think that a guy that used a wood burning stove for his cooking and as his only source of heat in minus 30 degree weather, probably didn’t have a water heater (or if he did it probably froze up all the time). I’d guess that he usually heated water on the stove for a tub or sponge bath during the winters.
I’d bet that he didn’t have city water where he was at, that his water was probably from a well or melting snow.

      • xoot said, on November 7, 2016 at 12:25 pm

exactly–a galvanized tub on the floor next to the wood stove that heats the water in pots and pans

And here’s a bit of news on Stix’s federal court proceedings, from late last week. On Wednesday, Stix filed a handwritten motion to have a public federal defender reappointed to represent him. Instantly, the federal court granted Stix’s motion. I perceive a new strategic approach at work here. I think Ms. Elkins is going to be busy. (One note: In his short h/w motion, before asking for relief, Stix described many ways he believes the government has prevented him from effectively representing himself.) Anyway, here’s the meat of the court’s order on the motion:

“[T]he Court finds that in the interest of justice counsel shall be reappointed to represent Defendant. Defendant is cautioned that he does not have an absolute right to further alternate between proceeding pro se and proceeding with the benefit of representation by counsel. While a criminal defendant has a Sixth Amendment right to conduct his own defense, that right to proceed pro se is not absolute. Jones v. Norman, 633 F.3d 661, 667 (8th Cir. 2011). “A request to proceed pro se is constitutionally protected only if it is ‘timely, not for the purpose of delay, unequivocal, voluntary, intelligent and the defendant is competent.’” Id. [other legal citations omitted].

“As Defendant is represented by counsel of record, he cannot [now] himself proceed with his [twelve pending] pro se motions. See [many legal citations omitted]

“For the foregoing reasons, and based on all of the files, records, and proceedings herein, IT IS HEREBY ORDERED:
    1. That Defendant’s Motion for Reassignment of Counsel, . . . , is GRANTED;
    2. That Shannon R. Elkins, Assistant Federal Defender, is reappointed as counsel . . . ; and
    3. That by no later than Friday, November 11, 2016, Shannon Elkins shall notify the Court
as to which of Defendant’s [twelve] previously filed pro se motions will proceed forward and
    which, if any are withdrawn.”

It’s a safe pick with Bud Black, Blade..
Nothing spectacular anymore, all the average to bad managers get recycled around the billionaire owners club!
All go on record saying no way in hell Ron Wotus will ever get a gig in the bigs….

Thanks for the Stix update, xoot. In all of this digging you have done, and I certainly appreciate the updates, do you know if there is a way to write Stix at the facility at which he is being held?

It sure would be cool to write him a letter and let him know that there is regular talk about him here at Flap Universe. If I can find an address, I certainly plan to write him. I can only imagine how wonderful it would be to get personal correspondence. Shit, I recall how import mail call was every day when I was deployed to Saudi Arabia (was there for almost four months). Mail was GOLD!

    • xoot said, on November 7, 2016 at 11:35 am

I’ll bet you can easily find Shannon Elkins’s work address at the Minnesota Federal Defenders’ Office. An envelope addressed to the Federal Defender, Attn. to her should help you get to Stix. (I suppose a note to her explaining that the enclosed letter is to Stix, etc., would speed things along. She might need to read it first. . . .)

Also, in one of his motions Stix wrote that he’s being detained pending trial at “the Federally contracting holding facility at the Sherburne County Jail.” Just a guess, but I think Ms. Elkins would be a better delivery service than the folks at the jail. But that address must be available.

Here’s what I get when I google for the Minn. defenders office:

UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT – MINNESOTA
      Minnesota Federal Public Defender
      U.S. Courthouse – Minneapolis Building
      300 S 4th St, Ste 202, Minneapolis, MN, 55415-1320
      (612) 664-5858

another search turned up the same address, but ste 107 and a 5859 phone extension. And then there’s this:
      http://mn.fd.org/
the email address on that page might yield some good info

      • chipower9 said, on November 7, 2016 at 12:35 pm

Thanks. I will let you all know what I find.

      • xoot said, on November 7, 2016 at 12:44 pm

Chi, here’s the official title of the United States District Court, District of Minnesota case: U.S.A. v. Carstie Lee Clausen, Case No.16-cr-00256.

    • blade3colorado said, on November 7, 2016 at 10:59 pm

Yeah, agree Chi. I use to love getting handwritten letters back in the day, especially overseas. Unbelievable how much the world has changed since the internet and email.

  11. sandog said, on November 7, 2016 at 11:15 am

I think Bud Black is a good manager and the Rockies did well on that hire. This has come up before on here, but I would fully endorse Black as the Giants manager when Bochy moves on.
Nobody likes the idea of Cespedes coming to the Giants????? That boggles my mind. Of course I don’t want to see them throw ridiculous money at him, but this team needs right hand power something vicious. I hope we go after him hard.
Yeah, the 40 miles for a shower deal is a harsh toke. I had to read that one a couple of times to make sure that is what it actually said.

  12. djloo27 said, on November 7, 2016 at 11:39 am

For all we know, Stix might be enjoying himself where he is.
We could chip in and send him a nice Giant sweatshirt…

    • blade3colorado said, on November 7, 2016 at 12:14 pm

Yep. Three squares, warm cot, and maybe a boyfriend (I kid, I kid)) – Stix found Nirvana!

    • Bozo said, on November 7, 2016 at 12:23 pm

He’ll probably be downright ecstatic, when winter hits back there.

    • chipower9 said, on November 7, 2016 at 1:01 pm

Great idea, Loo. I am in on the sweatshirt. I am writing Ms Elkins (using the address provided by xoot) to find out how we can contact Stix.

  13. alleykat69 said, on November 7, 2016 at 12:22 pm

Shannon Elkins looks hot, if I’m Stix I keep her on board!

  14. gianthead said, on November 7, 2016 at 12:53 pm

Blade, much belated congrats bud. I will say having your first kid is so much more of a life changer than even getting married is and to be frank much more enotionally rewarding. That bind you will have will be unmatched.. i think a lot of the Flappers will agree. So happy for you.

I dont think we go anywhere near Cespedes and one of the blogs had the idea of Encarnacion to the Red Sox to replace Ortiz. Makes too much sense…

    • djloo27 said, on November 7, 2016 at 2:53 pm

You typed bind, G-head. I’m sure you meant bond.
      Or did you?

      • sandog said, on November 7, 2016 at 3:00 pm

MEGA-LULZ! Parenthood can be a bit of a bind at times…that’s for sure!

Well, we finalized the staff with our new 1B coach, Jose Alguacil and 3B coach Phil Nevin, time to start working on the team.

    • Macdog said, on November 7, 2016 at 1:31 pm

Also Monday, the Giants announced they added right-hander Ian Gardeck back to the 40-man roster.

      • Bozo said, on November 7, 2016 at 1:46 pm

I did not see that Mac.
They also gave minor league contracts to Ricky Romero and Josh Johnson. So I guess filling the minor league rolls is ahead of filling the ML holes.

      • Flavor said, on November 7, 2016 at 2:28 pm

that’s how they roll. Twin used to love moves like these.

  16. unca_chuck said, on November 7, 2016 at 3:23 pm

Stix said as much in one of his dealings with the court that his newfound interactions with the diverse jail poopulation was ‘exhilarating and distracting’ or something like that.

40 miles for a shower though. Man, he likely is in a better place. Sort of.

  17. unca_chuck said, on November 7, 2016 at 3:23 pm

Bozo, that’s worth 5 wins right there!

Did the idiot who wrote this article just say Cespedes could split time in center for the Nats????

And Ian Desmond is not an upgrade in left. He could be an upgrade in center but we are stuck with the $11 million Spaninator..

Kat’s 12:22 had me LMAO regarding Stix’s public defender. If you haven’t google imaged “Shannon Elkins” yet be sure and add keywords like “attorney” or “Minnesota”. Otherwise you are going to think Kat’s into reallly buff reality show dudes.

  23. snarkk said, on November 7, 2016 at 6:55 pm

I like the 1b and 3b coaching hires. I especially like Nevin, it’s good to bring a guy in from another organization, add some new ideas to the staff…

    • Flavor said, on November 7, 2016 at 7:35 pm

the interview by Tolbert and Lund today was a joke. They didn’t ask him a single question in 20 min about coaching third base.

  24. Flavor said, on November 7, 2016 at 7:28 pm

the one thing I’ve learned from these daily retro-Stix posts: I wasn’t reading his posts carefully enough at the time he posted them. Part of that is that they’re usually long and my attention span isn’t not known as the greatest. But I’ve really enjoyed searching for them and reading them. It’s too bad he probably won’t ever post here again.

    • Bozo said, on November 7, 2016 at 7:53 pm

If he has someone’s Email here, he might be able to post through them. But yeah, the Feds probably won’t let him post directly on the Flap.

  25. unca_chuck said, on November 7, 2016 at 9:18 pm

The Warriors aren’t very good as they look right now. They simply jack 3s all night and get killed on the boards. They get and lose a 21 point lead in 6 minutes. 2 minutes left in the 3rd quarter and KD finally goes to the hole.

AD kills everyone but he’s killing the Dubs tonight especially.

  26. unca_chuck said, on November 7, 2016 at 9:23 pm

    I think it’s going to be more like 340 – 198 Killary.

Gawd, the Dubs are so sloppy with the ball.

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on November 7, 2016 at 9:59 pm

So, Giants predicted to get Melancon and Desmond. Former sounds fine, not sure about the latter….

      • snarkk said, on November 8, 2016 at 1:00 am

        Norma Desmond?…

  27. unca_chuck said, on November 7, 2016 at 9:56 pm

Certainly digging on Melancon. I hope it comes to pass. Blanton wouldn’t hurt either.

Shit, when it rains 3s it is fun to watch. But someone needs to tell KD that he needs to start the game attacking the rim, not running the arc hucking treys. Beyond the fact it’s easier to get offensive rebounds in close, you need to get your points in the paint, then go outside once they start collapsing on him.
