Hit a Dong, Soon You’ll Be Long Gone

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on March 8, 2017

Three guys who won’t be making the opening day roster (Williamson, Marrero and The Donger) went yard yesterday.

Young Beedah continues to impress.

WBC snores on. Bruce Chen didn’t even see the purpose in putting cleats on. Look what he wore on the mound yesterday. Apparently it was business-casual day.

And then they were gone. Ask not for whom the bell dongs; it dongs for thee in AAA.

not too often we go POTD before 9am in the morning.

  2. willedav said, on March 8, 2017 at 7:34 am

Hard to figure out what Donger will learn in AAA but at least bat will stay fresh; Coast League stats are skewed because it’s such a hitters league. Wasn’t Parker leading it in HRs (12 or something) when he first got called up last year?

Hope Mac shows he has enough to stick—5 OFs, someone to back up Span and play CF, someone to take over RF for when Pence needs a day off

Nice pic of HacMan rounding 3b and getting hand shake from Zimmer after HR vs. Cards 87 playoffs in Chron.

Holy shit, those are some butt-ugly unis. Did not have the chance to follow yesterdays game, but good to see some Giants batted balls flying outta the yard, even if those dudes have almost no chance of cracking the 25.

I am more impressed by Moore’s outing. 3 IP – no runs. 2 BB and 5 Ks. Beede also with two clean frames.

Charlie (Unca) – in regards to your questions yesterday: how did a good ol Oklahoma boy like me end up at St. Mary’s? I did not attend classes in Moraga. I studied Binnez Management at a satellite location in Sacto, but did walk with my class for graduation at Moraga. What a beautiful campus.

Too bad the Gaels got their asses handed to them by Gonzaga last night. Zags with the trifecta this year. It was apparent pretty early on that Gonzaga had a much better team than SMC. I still think SMC will get like a 7 seed or so for the March Madness dance.

Giants vs. Puerto Rico today. Zzzzzzz….

I am ready for them to T it up for real. Just a bit over a month for the home opener!

Nice to see Moore match Kershaw numbers yesterday with 3 shutout innings. This guy and the FLR hopefully can continue to frustrate Dodger LU.

Hey Flav, saw a nice column on your boy Nunez on F/G in their Roto section: Buying the breakout Andrus and Nunez.

It uses stats to compare his career 2010-14 vs. 2015-16 and shows he has improved BA OB (both up 20 points) SLG (up 50 points) quite a bit. Mostly for bottom feeder Twins of course.
In more detailed analysis he makes more hard contact uses whole field more and way fewer pop ups and soft contact.
Writer also says Bochy has indicated Nunez might bat 2nd in LU…hmmnn.

I don’t understand why Marrero is tied for the lead in ABs this spring. I understand why Mac also has 21, he’s sorta on the bubble, but Marrero?

    • chipower9 said, on March 8, 2017 at 9:17 am

I have wondered about this too, John. I think one of two things: either he has chicken pictures on Giants’ brass, or someone somewhere in the Giants org saw something they like. Looking at the dude’s limited stats (in 2011 and 2013), I am leaning towards the chicken pictures theory.

      • Bozo said, on March 8, 2017 at 10:54 am

Yeah, it’s gotta be the chicken pictures.

Anybody that can clobber the ball outta the park is somebody I want to see with a shot on making the team. The HR is a weapon the Giants have had too little of the last few seasons…

    • chipower9 said, on March 8, 2017 at 9:24 am

Nice to have, but I don’t put a ton of prominence on HRs. Hey, they were not big HR bashers in any of the years they won it all. Given they play 81 a year at our yard, I believe it more important to have smart hitters who can get on base, hit the gaps, etc., and keep the conga line moving. That and pitching…

HR stats, World Serious Title Years:

      2010 – T-10th ML, 6th NL
2012 – 30th (dead last) ML, 16th (dead last) NL
      2014 – 17th ML, 7th NL

Wow. Niners sign Pierre Garc0n to a huge 3 year deal (at $16 mill per?). So much for the slow build. It looks like we are going after Cousins.

Balls to the wall, baby. Not sure I’m crazy about rolling hard, but you certainly have to admire their balls-out attitude.

    • chipower9 said, on March 8, 2017 at 9:56 am

Fuck it…they are loaded for bear (between the picks and cap money). Giddy the fuck up!

    • Macdog said, on March 8, 2017 at 12:10 pm

      Or Hoyer.

  8. alleykat69 said, on March 8, 2017 at 10:31 am

I’m not totally in with Garçon, he sucked in my Fantasy Football, but I’m sure they needed a vet presence after dumping Torrey Smith, plus Garcon runs better routes, unlike Smith who just ran straight downfield praying Kap could hit him deep which rarely happened..

    • unca_chuck said, on March 8, 2017 at 11:43 am

If anything, Garcon is pretty tough. he’s missed 10 games in 8 years as a starter.

  9. sfsarge said, on March 8, 2017 at 12:33 pm

Hoyer? I really hope these guys know what they’re doing. This leads me to believe they’ll still probably draft a quarterback. Hopefully not Mitchy T

  10. chipower9 said, on March 8, 2017 at 12:49 pm

Damn…it looks like Hoyer is a done deal (or damned near close). I am with Sarge…hope the fuck these guys know what they are doing. And regardless of whether or not Hoyer is a Niner, I sure the fuck hope they do not spend their 1st round pick on a QB.

  11. chipower9 said, on March 8, 2017 at 12:53 pm

I know many are having their fun with the world baseball classic. But how about that baseball juggernaut Israel moving on…and without a single ML player on their roster.

  12. zumiee said, on March 8, 2017 at 1:10 pm

    Nice catch!

  13. xoot said, on March 8, 2017 at 1:54 pm

For those of us hard at work, mlb’s broadcasting video of the Giants vs. Puerto Rico in Scottsdale. I think Belt got the first hit of the game for the Giants–in the 5th. Melancon, however, sure looked good last inning. Pagan did slice a weak bloop single off him. Otherwise he was unhittable.

  14. chipower9 said, on March 8, 2017 at 1:54 pm

Melancon against Puerto Rico today…1 IP, 3 Ks. Hope it is an indication of things to come.

  15. snarkk said, on March 8, 2017 at 2:05 pm

Tis true Giants won 3 trophies with low HR totals. Tis also true they had lock down Pens. I doubt this Pen is going to be lock down even w Melancon. It wasn’t last year, and they barely made the playoffs after losing a ton of close games. More HRs takes pressure off a Pen…

    • chipower9 said, on March 8, 2017 at 2:09 pm

There ya go, snaark…Morse with a two run bomb to plate Pence and put the Giants up. You want him to have a legit chance to crack the 25?

    • chipower9 said, on March 8, 2017 at 2:10 pm

If the Giants had a legit closer last year, they would have won more games, and I think they would have advanced past the Cubbies. We can agree to disagree. I don’t think it a must to have boppers on the club to win, and go deep in the playoffs. Again, I put more prominence on keeping the line moving and good pitching…

  16. alleykat69 said, on March 8, 2017 at 2:23 pm

Well I like the signing coming up of the Raven FB Juszy?? Pro Bowler caught 78 passes the last 2 seasons for 587 yards 4 TD’s and since the 49ers didn’t have a FB last year after dumping Miller And since Shanahan utilities the FB in his offense this one should be a good pickup..
Hoyer????? God they better pickup a QB to groom, since he’s no better then Gabby…

  17. chipower9 said, on March 8, 2017 at 2:53 pm

Marrero with a walk-off donger. Hey, maybe you are onto something with this HR thing, Tom.

  18. unca_chuck said, on March 8, 2017 at 4:06 pm

Niners just signed Brian Hoyer. This doesn’t preclude still going for Cousins, burt at least we have a QB.

We also signed Scrabble dream, FB Kyle Juszczyk. Reminds me of Rathman. Too bad he just left.

They are going all-in from the get go.

    • djloo27 said, on March 8, 2017 at 4:15 pm

Hoyer had the worst game I ever saw a QB have vs. KC in playoffs.
      Did he suddenly get good?

      • Flavor said, on March 8, 2017 at 4:34 pm

Hoyer sucks. But he could start for a year before the Niners sign Cousins. I don’t see them paying up for Cousins when they could just sign him next year and not give anything up but $$$. But we will see….

  19. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on March 8, 2017 at 5:24 pm

Completely agree with Tom’s morning post about any player hitting HRs having a shot to make the team. I’ve been talking about this for weeks now, and even making my own “roster” based on the long ball. I’m going to guess that “my” roster will, by the end of spring training, look pretty much like the real one anyway, but I seriously want to see more HRs this year. No, don’t *need* to HRs to win it all; just need to increase the possibility that more players in the lineup *could* bop it out and win it in the late innings. 2010 they seemed to do that a lot. Moving the f-ing conga line is fine, when they’re, you know, actually moving the f-ing conga line. Earl Weaver baseball, man, bring it back….

    • Flavor said, on March 8, 2017 at 5:45 pm

I’m down with saberstats but people can overthink this stuff. Somewhere along the way, bombs have lost their appeal. Not to me. I don’t get why you wouldn’t want someone on your team hitting actual home runs as opposed to someone with a high wOBA…..

    • djloo27 said, on March 8, 2017 at 6:01 pm

Give the GM (Cashen?) some credit, too. In Weaver’s day, the GM built the team and the manager made the line-up…

  20. alleykat69 said, on March 8, 2017 at 5:49 pm

    Agree Paul,
Earl Weaver was “The Man” among managers in the 60’s and 70’s imo one of the best all time( his track record pct for winning pretty damm impressive)And he was the original among women especially in Baltimore who ” really dug the long ball!!

  21. djloo27 said, on March 8, 2017 at 5:50 pm

If they’re gonna bat Nunie second, then why not just bat him first?
I’m sure there are stats that say they shouldn’t but fuck that.
Let the fast guy lead off and bat the lefty second.
Maybe Span-pa will feel a little less pressure in the 2 hole…

    • Flavor said, on March 8, 2017 at 6:28 pm

Nunie is a better leadoff hitter than Span. I will never be swayed otherwise. It’s not just all about OBP. It’s what you do once you’re on base. Plus Nunie can bang the bomb, something Span won’t be doing much this year. The home run is awesome no matter when it comes in the line up

  22. snarkk said, on March 8, 2017 at 6:53 pm

Let’s all get with the program: How I Learned To Stop Worrying (about the conga line) and Love the Bomb ! …

  23. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on March 8, 2017 at 6:55 pm

Haha, yeah, I remember that quote about chicks digging the long ball. Sorry, the long ball ain’t just for chicks. Agree, Craig, I don’t understand why any team wouldn’t want to have players who can hit the big ‘tater. Makes no sense. Bochy ain’t exactly a mastermind when it comes to creating small ball. He could save himself some big-head headaches in the later innings if he had some boppers in the line-up and on the bench. If the team “goes north” for the season without these guys who are hitting HRs in Scottsdale and instead trusts on the conga line, it’s going to potentially be a long dry season….

  24. willedav said, on March 8, 2017 at 8:17 pm

The object of hitting is to score runs.

    Team A: 725 runs scored 189 HRs BA .256 OB .319

    Team B: 715 runs scored 130 HRs BA .265 OB .329

Team A of course is the Dodgers, B the Giants. So the Dodgers hit 59 more HRs and scored 10 more runs total.
Giants hit better as a team and had the better OB.
That’s the kind of team I want to see, not just HR hitters.
Since the NL isn’t a DH league, you have to a team full of guys who bring a glove to the yard unlike Big Papi.
So the combo of guys who can do both trumps how many HRs they hit, to me anyway.

  25. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on March 8, 2017 at 8:28 pm

Definitely not “just” HR hitters, agree. I keep thinking back to 2010, when just the threat of the occasional bomb from the likes of Uribe, Burrell, Huff, Renteria, Posey (back in the day when he seemed more powerful than he has more recently) makes the lineup more potent. Ok, I’ll get off it now, obviously this Giants team is not going to be full of boppers… I just have a feeling this season the HR will be important, and I’d rather see the Giants hit more of ’em than our opponents….

    • willedav said, on March 8, 2017 at 8:39 pm

I think giants if they stay healthy can hit better for avg and hit more HRs, and should score more too. A big part of that concerns Pence, LF, Craw and Posey. If the 3 vets can maintain health I think they can do more, and out of the rest you will get some up/some down. I’d like one more proven bat too, but Evans $$$ ran out.

But I’d rather have Posey who I do think will have better season at the plate and his great D than Y Grandal and his 27 HRs/.228 BA.

Watching Dubs v Celts in brew pub, Curry is amazing . But, he does make a lot of dumb passes for a guy with a high basketball IQ…

  27. snarkk said, on March 8, 2017 at 8:35 pm

You guys do remember the Morse bomb against the Cards in NLC 2014 to tie up the game, and Ishi’s bomb to win it? Tell me you’d rather have a conga line than that. Exciting as hell, memories forever …,

    • snarkk said, on March 8, 2017 at 8:38 pm

Buster bomb salami off Latos in 2012 to take the NLDS? Phuck the conga line…

    • willedav said, on March 8, 2017 at 8:43 pm

Hey the Orioles are really fun to watch hit but I’d rather have the Giants team.

I’m looking at going to the Giants v Brewers at Scottsdale stadium on March 19. Friggin $75 for a decent seat on the SF website. Maybe I should just go the scalper route, but I dunno if there’s much of that at these ST weekend games…

  29. willedav said, on March 8, 2017 at 10:38 pm

All those HRs the Dodgers hit got them exactly 4 more Ws than SF last year and yet another early exit from the playoffs when Op and his buddies heimliched another one.
