Old and New

This pitching line was nearly perfect in terms of who Matt Cain is at this point in his career.

Screenshot 2017-03-29 at 6.13.01 AM

He niggled his way into the 6th inning. He gave up a bomb. 4 ER. More K’s than walks. Get used to it. And I suspect Bochy will have a VERY high tolerance for this in 2017. In addition to his blind love for Matt Cain, he has the normal expectations of a 5th starter to cloud his judgement.

Chris Marrero has 7 bombs this spring and who am I to discount that? I am 100% supportive of NEW BLOOD on this roster so if Marrero is that guy, come on down!

New Blood like Marreo&Donger would be a welcome addition, unfortunately the Giants mind set is Old Blood needing a blood transfusion. So Rivercats it is for those 2..

Agree Cain. Classic Cainer line at this point.

I think we all have believed for some time that Cain would absolutely get the nod as the 5th starter. It will be interesting to see how it all shapes over the course of the season. Blach has been no slouch and is waiting in the wings if there is a Cainer meltdown.

I shared my latest projected 25 man yesterday, and I have Marerro making the team. I truly think he is one of the best options at this point. Ruggiano with another bomb yesterday, too. He has picked it up of late, but I think Gorkys, with his speed and ability to play all three OF positions gets the nod over Ruggiano.

I did not have Suarez on my 25 man (which had 12 pitchers). If they go with 13 out of the gate, Suarez may get the nod.

Last week I saw a beat writer tweet that Beede will start one of the games vs the a’s this weekend to give him experience before a mlb crowd. Wonder if that guy knew what he was talking about.

  4. willedav said, on March 29, 2017 at 7:44 am

Cain left with a couple runners on after 5 decent innings, which Osich turned into a blown save and a 4 run inning. Had Osich done his job that line looks a lot better
He’s the #5 guy facing a good hitting team in AZ, yada yada. I doubt he’ll last very long if his ERA is over 7.00 in reg season, even given Bochy’s vet love. There are enough options I don’t think Giants will continue to throw him out there if he is that bad.

Like I said last night, if the loogys are having trouble, maybe it’s better if Blach is in the pen, at least for now.

  5. willedav said, on March 29, 2017 at 7:48 am

It is ST and it is AZ: the Giants hit 4 HRs yesterday, Span off Arrieta Marrero 3 run bomb to take lead plus Ruggiano and FedEx back up to back up C.

  6. Flavor said, on March 29, 2017 at 7:51 am

Young Beedah just got engaged to an incredibly hot piece of ass. That is all the news I have for you about him today.

    • snarkk said, on March 29, 2017 at 8:52 am

Bad move. Don’t get married until you get at least that first fat contract. Timmy was smart about that, he’ll $100 mill smart…

  7. Flavor said, on March 29, 2017 at 7:52 am

Listening to Kruk on the drive into work this am. He said, “To me, Cain pitched GREAT yesterday.”

    • chipower9 said, on March 29, 2017 at 8:08 am

Kruk being his disillusioned homer self. Maybe it is great for a 5th starter, in ST, in AZ…but even then, a stretch.

  8. willedav said, on March 29, 2017 at 8:31 am

Matier and Ross column today in Chron details that Oaktown and Alameda county taxpayers actually owe more like $350 mil for Mt. Davis redo. Plus, there is also a large debt on the Arena where Warriors play that they are currently covering ($7mil a year), though no one will say what happens once they leave for new SF arena.
And a reporter says based on info from Coliseum authority they will actually lose money on Raider home games if crowds dwindle next few years.
    Gift that keeps on giving..

  9. Bozo said, on March 29, 2017 at 8:54 am

I watched yesterdays game and I thought Cain pitched better than I’ve seen in a long time and against a very good lineup. IMO, Osich not being able to get the lefties out could be a bigger problem than who the 5th starter is. You can’t really put Blach in that role if you want to keep him stretched out enough to be a starter or if he turns out to be the 5th guy. Is it to early to be trading for lefty relief?

    • chipower9 said, on March 29, 2017 at 10:11 am

I agree re: Osich, John. I have been a proponent of Osich for the lefty-specialist role last held by Lopez. Oshich historically has had great numbers against lefties, but has not done anything to solidify a move in that direction, and that is an asset that I think the team (any team) needs…is that ability to come in, in a clutch high-pressure situation, and get that big left-handed bat out.

  10. snarkk said, on March 29, 2017 at 8:55 am

Per Baer and kuip radio comments at the front end of ST, the fix was in on Cain, unless his elbow fell off or he sucker punched Baer in the clubhouse…

    • chipower9 said, on March 29, 2017 at 10:14 am

As I mentioned earlier, I think we all knew that Cain had the 5th spot unless something monumental happened (and hence, it appears a 7+ ERA is ST is not monumental). This is all especially true with the coin they owe him.

  11. alleykat69 said, on March 29, 2017 at 10:37 am

Loyalty should only go so far with Cain.
Then again Greg Anderson’s loyalty to Barry Bonds never squealing on him, even taking a prison rap for him, paid out later with cash and a house isn’t bad compensation…

    • snarkk said, on March 29, 2017 at 5:46 pm

Kat, I has not heard that. So is Anderson now in a big house upgrade and a lifetime consulting contract with Bonds?…

  12. chipower9 said, on March 29, 2017 at 2:19 pm

I know the roster is not set, and not sure this was discussed earlier, or not, but Hill is on the travel roster to SF, and Rollins was not. So all indications are Hill is in. Rollins is out. Thank goodness. I may have had a coronary if Rollins had made the club over…well over just about anyone else.

    • Flavor said, on March 29, 2017 at 4:45 pm

I mean, the last guy on the bench shouldn’t cause that much angst within you, my man. Rollins woulda been a good dude to have spit seeds with the other bench warmers. Having said that, I am glad he’s not on the team, too. I was a Hill-guy coming into ST but The Donger changed all that for me. I really hope he hones his game in Sac and gets the call up about the time Hill is doing his best “Uggla” impression

      • snarkk said, on March 29, 2017 at 5:49 pm

The Donger impressed me the short stint I saw him in the ST game in Phoenix. Very good, quiet batting stance and nice stroke. Dude can hit. I’d like to see him on the squad…

  13. snarkk said, on March 29, 2017 at 6:42 pm

When I heard that saw vans was picking up some older Korean player, I said at the time it was probably kind of a stunt. But I was wrong, I think the Songer can contribute. And he dude is giving up a porting of $8 million equivalent to take a shot at making it in MLB. So, props to him. I think he’s got a drop dead date or something near the AS break so that if he’s not on the 25 he can go back home…

  14. snarkk said, on March 29, 2017 at 7:01 pm

Dubs sleepwalking thru first quarter v Spurs. Why the NBA schedules Dubs consistently in San Antone on a back to back is stupid…

    • Flavor said, on March 29, 2017 at 7:34 pm

I hung in there and glad I did. Wow, what a comeback.

      • willedav said, on March 29, 2017 at 8:33 pm

picked it up little before halftime. Great game. Hang on to the ball and keep Spurs off FT line.

    • snarkk said, on March 29, 2017 at 9:23 pm

Amazing how good this team can be when they are firing on all cylinders. And, without Durant. When they focus on D, it really opens things up for them on offense. In college game, if a team faceplates early at at 23-5 clip, likely game over. In the NBA, not so much…

  15. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on March 29, 2017 at 7:39 pm

I doubt Hwang will have to wait too long to join the team; I mean, this lineup is just not that stellar or “uncrackable” that there’s no room for the guy. First sign of poor performance or injury, Hwang’s our guy, and I think once given the chance, he’ll stick. Cain? I doubt it’s *loyalty* that keeps him in the 5 spot, more likely a memo from on high about finances, “milk him as long as you can”. Marrero? He made “my” roster in week 2. Hoping he makes it for real AND his ST success carries forward. And Loo, agree with your comment at the very end of last thread about the manager also needing a bounce-back year. Damn, we’re getting close, play ball!

  16. willedav said, on March 29, 2017 at 9:04 pm

wow that was impressive. Warriors serving notice to rest of league, winning in decisive fashion without Durant.
Love to have heard that convo btw Kerr and Pop there as they shake hands.

  17. snarkk said, on March 29, 2017 at 9:25 pm

Dubs may have wrapped up the #1 seed in the West with the Spurs comeback win tonight…

  18. unca_chuck said, on March 29, 2017 at 9:37 pm

Crazy thing is, the dubs were playing defense all game. The Spurs were on fire.

Javalle McGee was flat awful. Although one of his missed dunks was a totally obvious foul. West on the other hand was amazing. The Spurs had way too many second chance points.

But beating Houston and SA back to back on the road is no mean feat.

And the word is Durant will be back in about 10 days.

  19. mrsprtdude said, on March 30, 2017 at 7:38 am

Re Dubs..When they were tied and i saw Hou and SA back to back on the road I started looking at OKC and the rest competing for the 7th spot. Awesome win

  20. chipower9 said, on March 30, 2017 at 7:58 am

Great win by the Warriors last night. Damn that team can play some D, and they can light it up, too!

  21. willedav said, on March 30, 2017 at 8:13 am

Reading a Baggs story about Marrero said he plays 1b/LF. And hasn’t been in ml since 2013 but lit up AAA for Boston. If he makes it what’s up with Mac? Is he hurt or do they send him down to Sac? Hill is in plus Gameface, so Specs goes down too I guess.

Haven’t watched ST but I’ll check out tonight at ATT vs. A’s. Who pitches?

  22. zumiee said, on March 30, 2017 at 8:42 am

Tonight’s Giants game is on both Bay Area Comcast and the MLB Network, 7:00 Pacific Time, I think.
And, as always, I’m a little amazed that people buy tickets and go to these two games with the A’s every year. I see the appeal of going to Spring Training in Arizona, and the whole experience of that; but going to a Spring Training game at AT&T or the Oakland Coliseum? I don’t really get that.

    • alleykat69 said, on March 30, 2017 at 9:20 am

Couldn’t drag my ass over to a A’s game but ATT you just go over to Mo MO’s are Reds and get your skink on..,

    • xoot said, on March 30, 2017 at 9:51 am

It’s a great opportunity for a’s fans to see their team play in a great ballpark without paying regular season rates. And you know how a’s fans love to play pennyball.

    • chipower9 said, on March 30, 2017 at 10:01 am

Yeah – I have never been a big fan of the Bay Bridge Series. My daughter loves to go…me, meh.

The other thing is that it sure seems that the A’s have the Giants number on a regular basis and put a whoopin’ on us! Who needs that type of consternation??? Ain’t NOBODY got time for that shit…

Astros-Cubs are on MLB network tonight. Lots of hoopla out here about the Astros, as there should be. This is an exciting, young team that added some nice veteran talent in the offseason. First game at Minute Maid without Tal’s Hill, so that should be interesting. Taking my eight year old to Opening Night on Monday. Looking forward to sharing my favorite day of the year with him.

    • Flavor said, on March 30, 2017 at 5:26 pm

they finally ditched that dumb hill out in center? Nice. Astros are going to be fun to watch this year. Question for you Wilco, is this son of yours being raised a Giants fan or an Astros fan? Nevermind, I think I (sadly but understandably) know the answer….

      • wilcojoe said, on March 30, 2017 at 6:44 pm

No, his number one team is still the Giants. His favorite player (you’re going to love this Flav) is Brandon Belt. Mostly because their both left handed and play first base. But I think he also likes that Belt is from Texas but plays in SF.

He likes the Astros but If they played each other in the World Series, he would proudly rock his Giants gear and have no problem rooting against Houston.

      • Flavor said, on March 30, 2017 at 7:31 pm

good to hear. And I’m sure Belt is the favorite player of a lot of young fans. I am not one of those young fans….

  25. djloo27 said, on March 30, 2017 at 6:42 pm

I never wear non-Giant baseball stuff, but I may give in on a Jimmy Wynn Colt .45 jersey…

    • wilcojoe said, on March 30, 2017 at 6:49 pm

Those Colt .45 jerseys and caps are bad ass. I might buy one of those caps at the yard on Monday.

  26. alleykat69 said, on March 30, 2017 at 7:02 pm

Agree WJ&Loo… I would easily rock that bad ass Colt 45 jersey&Cap and have Toy Cannon letters on the back for Jimmy Wynn!

  27. willedav said, on March 30, 2017 at 7:43 pm

    wilco very cool.
wow Marrero almost yanked that out of ATT in his first AB. Things to come?
    Or the K?

    • Flavor said, on March 30, 2017 at 7:45 pm

probably a little of both. And nothing in between

  28. willedav said, on March 30, 2017 at 7:53 pm

so much for Rajai adding to the speed game.

    • Flavor said, on March 30, 2017 at 7:58 pm

Cueto is pretty incredible at that.

  29. Flavor said, on March 30, 2017 at 8:01 pm

Johnny Cueto allowed just three successful stolen bases in 2016 over 220 innings.

Cueto has only allowed 15 stolen bases over the last four seasons. By comparison, Jon Lester allowed 44 steals just last year.

    • willedav said, on March 30, 2017 at 8:36 pm

pretty impressive stats Flav., as was Marrero’s shot into the RF corner for Giants first hit.
Notice they have pitch count but not speed on the stat widget. sucks.

Gearrin, my boy. Doesn’t look like the haircut increased how slow he is btw pitches.

  31. chipower9 said, on March 30, 2017 at 8:27 pm

Marrero with a nice shoestring grab…and he damned near hit a bomb (foul) earlier. I hope he makes the team…I truly see no better options to back-up LF and 1B on occasion.

  32. chipower9 said, on March 30, 2017 at 8:31 pm

    I’ll tell ya…I am digging Marrero…

  33. Macdog said, on March 30, 2017 at 8:40 pm

Methinks Marrero oughta make the team.

  34. chipower9 said, on March 30, 2017 at 8:42 pm

Nice snag by the ball dude…6th OFer? 😉

  35. unca_chuck said, on March 30, 2017 at 8:55 pm

Jimmy Wynn was one of my favorite non-Giants growing up. Belt looks like he’s trying to hit oppo more.

  36. unca_chuck said, on March 30, 2017 at 8:56 pm

And that was before the grounder through the left side.

  37. willedav said, on March 30, 2017 at 8:56 pm

nice! gotta see way more of that from Belt, taking advantage of what shift and pitcher gives you.

  38. chipower9 said, on March 30, 2017 at 9:06 pm

    Bam! MudBug!

  39. chipower9 said, on March 30, 2017 at 9:13 pm

I know it is only the Bay Bridge series, and yes, it’s only the Fucking A’s, but the boys look pretty good. Saw an article the other day ranking teams for offense (based on WAR). Giants were 8th. I think they’ll get their hits and score some runs, but 8th surprised me a bit.

  40. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on March 30, 2017 at 9:14 pm

Hard to believe this will be the team’s 18th season at China Basin. That’s a whole new generation of fans for whom the Stick is only history. Just doesn’t seem that long ago the new park opened. I was almost still a young man… 🙂

    • willedav said, on March 30, 2017 at 9:22 pm

and this year will mark 10th different starting LF in last 10 yrs.

    • chipower9 said, on March 30, 2017 at 9:32 pm

Definitely a does not seem like 18 years. I got out my Opening Day shirt from 2000 the other day (plan to wear it for this year’s OD), and it brought back lots of memories.

    • sfsarge said, on March 30, 2017 at 9:57 pm

Wow, it occurred to me when they tore down the stick that my kids have only ever known the Giants playing at AT&T park.

  41. xoot said, on March 30, 2017 at 9:21 pm

Enjoyable game tonight. I found this ranking piece interesting.
    http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2017-positional-power-rankings-summary/

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on March 30, 2017 at 9:35 pm

For Giants, good IF rankings, terrible OF rankings, no surprise there. Looks like this piece thinks the Dodgers are the team to beat….

      • chipower9 said, on March 30, 2017 at 9:39 pm

But hey, the bums are ALWAYS the team to beat. 😉

    • chipower9 said, on March 30, 2017 at 9:37 pm

Definitely interesting. Thanks for the share, Mike. C and infield looks pretty realistic, and so does the OF to some degree. Bullpen at 19th is worrisome, and is one of my biggest concerns…bridging the gap from starter to closer. But WTF let’s play ball and see what happens!

  42. chipower9 said, on March 30, 2017 at 9:49 pm

Melamcon was business-like. They looked pretty damned good tonight.

  43. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on March 30, 2017 at 10:32 pm

I’ve been a little down on Sabevans leading into this season for, IMO, not building a strong enough OF or bench or even the ‘pen, but I am really looking forward to watching MadBum, Cueto, and Moore. Always a pleasure just watching Cueto pitch.
