We Need More Power
The Giants announcers were touting this great burst of energy that Arroyo has added but the way I see it there has been one Morse swing and a lot of Arroyo and not much else coming from the hitters since he got called up. So I’m not sure about all this energy to the LU they were talking about on the post game show last night. His call up hasn’t seemed to *energy burst* Pence, Nunie, Belt, Posey, etc…..
Not that it would ever happen, but who else can they call up to add more energy/better players to this still sagging line up?
Ryder Jones is hitting for average in AAA but no power and we’ve already got a 3rd baseman (Arroyo) so he’s off the list.
Chris Shaw is interesting because they have recently been trying him in left field but I’d be surprised if he got the call NOW just because he really doesn’t have much experience yet playing the outfield.
Austin Slater is intriguing as he is from The Farm so you know he’s smart as fuck and can hit the long ball like a big boss. Plays the outfield, too. But really, Slater hasn’t shown enough to justify getting called up to the major leagues unless some major holes open up in SF.
The biggest issue we have right now is center field. Span is gone for a while and hopefully the Giants are finding out quickly that Drew Stubbs can’t play baseball too good. And don’t gorkys me, dawg. No time to joke around.
So that’s the target spot if you are Sabean.
“And don’t gorkys me, dawg. No time to joke around.”
Coffee about got up and went through my nose upon reading that. Good one.
you can do an awful lot with that name. 🙂
Hwang is hitting .303 in Sac, but no HRs in 76 ABs; 5 doubles 1 triple .740 OPS. Maybe he is still getting adjusted but I would have thought he’d have higher slugging than .395.
He did play 1b last night, so if you want to shuffle the deck chairs—Dong at 1b Arroyo 3b Belt in LF.
good to see Specs back (tho I haven’t actually seen a game since Monday) but he won’t add pop either.
Power is fine, but this guy Schimpf and his 6 HRs is batting .132. The Pads may be young exciting team with some potential, but bottom line other than Myers and Solarte, they suck. They started one guy in RF who was even worse at .059, and 4 of them (half the LU) weren’t hitting better than .205.
and somehow our big payroll team is only 2-2 vs them…..
Arroyo’s HR was the kind we have longed for on the Flap. A righty pulling the ball into those leftfield bleachers. We usually have to wait for Bum to do that. Or Morse now. Somebody in the broadcast saw some Kent in Arroyo. That might be TOO much to hope for. But it would be nice to have a righty have a little fun with those leftfield bleachers occasionally.
I like that comparison to Kent, both had nice pull swings…
Yeah, now centerfield on top of leftfield. I’m not even sure who the team considers its LFer to be. Nunez? Belt? Uh…. Nunie needs to adjust and step up soon, and I am not a big fan of Belt to LF. In a pinch, maybe. The drop-off in D when he’s not at 1st appears to be huge, but I don’t know statistically. This start to this season I think has caused the braintrust to see that Flap Universe has been right all along, and man, does Sabean hate it when the lunatic fringe is right.
Yeah, centerfield for the Giants is the kind of epic sucking black-hole that a person usually only reads about in Astronomy magazine. Stubbs is terrible at batting; he can’t even lock down the job over Gorkys. That’s pitiful.
I say bring up a minor leaguer. It couldn’t be worse than our crap-duo.
Regarding the team’s quest for power; it doesn’t just mean HRs, of course. More hits off the wall and in the gaps, throughout the lineup, would be greatly appreciated.
After making the costly error, Belt was the first Giant hitter up, and squared up a high fastball for a double. Nice to see. It immediately brought momentum back to the Giants.
I’m going on a trip that will have me offline for a couple of days.
Rock on, awesome Flappers!
Later Zumiee. Hopefully when you get back we aren’t…..

This outfield disaster, and that is what this is, is all on management. They haven’t developed shit in the outfield in two decades. Now it has all at once shown up, because the stop gaps they usually do to shore it up are hurt or crap, or both. This isn’t solved soon except via trade. Gorkys isn’t going to suddenly turn into Garry Maddox. BTW, Whereinhell is Williamson?…
How would any of these guys look in the outfield right now? Three were home grown. Two generally remembered fondly by most Giants fans, IMO. Stats are for their time as an SF Giant. All post- 60s for you younger fellas. They all played elsewhere at some point, except #2. Identities in later post. Hint provided.
1. Two seasons, batting .279 with 34 home runs and 181 RBI. OBP of .381 and SLG of .432 = OPS a solid .813. Came to SF as the other side of a trade involving a Giants fan favorite.
2. Nine seasons. BA at .271 with 54 home runs and 260 RBI. OBP of .343. Home grown.
3. Five seasons, hitting .287 with 64 home runs and 296 RBI. OBP of .367 and SLG of .443, yielding a nice OPS at .810. Worth salute for being home grown.
4. Three seasons. Overall BA at .293 with 13 home runs and 123 RBI. OBP of .381 with 125 SBs. Scored over 100 runs in each of his three years, led the NL in runs one year with 109, and led NL in hits one year with 192. PTL.
5. Three seasons. Though last season was injury plagued, he batted overall .281 with 44 home runs and 184 RBI. Total .441 SLG. A noble man.
6. Six + seasons. BA at .267 with 101 HR and 418 RBI. OBP was .340. 95 SBs. Best Giant stat season was at .315/.368/.507/.875, with 21 dongs. Home grown.
7. Four seasons. BA .256 with 59 home runs and 279 RBI. Sweet swing.
I like it. Is one of these guys Duval? Maybe Dexter Fowler mixed in there somewhere too? Khris Davis?
After sandog’s post, I edited my original to add some more details. Stats are just for their time as an SF Giant…
Four is easy – Butler
13 homers sounds high for Butler, but everything else sounds dead on. I think you got that one.
Number 1 is Bobby Murcer (who I never cared for). Bobby Bonds is the “fan favorite.”
Number 6 is Chili Davis. Man, that one threw me.
Marvin Benard numero 2.
Number 3 Gary Mathews
and 5 is Marquis Grissom. Anyone else left???
Oh . . . Number 7 is the Candy man.
While I was looking at some OFer stuff, I came across Barry Bonds stats as a Giant. With SF, he had a career OPS of 1.143. That is mind-blowing…
Ok, ok, I’ll play along, though I don’t have much time. Some names that I think could be behind those curtains are Larry Herndon, Dan Gladden, Gary Mathews, and maybe even our boy Gary Thomasson, who seems to get a fair amount of run around here for some reason. Maybe HacMan is on there too?
Take your time posting the answers. I think you’re onto something that can entertain us all for the bulk of the afternoon!
Sure, I’ll let the blurbs percolate for a bit. I’m afraid my hints may give things away…
Baseball card game revenge for the Blademan…
2B – Joe Panik (L)
LF – Brandon Belt (L)
C – Buster Posey (R)
1B – Mike Morse (R)
SS – Christan Arroyo (R)
3B – Conor Gillaspie (L)
RF – Eduardo Nunez (R)
CF – Drew Stubbs (R)
P – Matt Cain (R)
if you turn your laptop upside down and read this it’s really not so bad. Kinda funny, too.
Loo or Mac, what do you think about Syndergaard refusing to do an MRI? Me? I don’t blame him. Unless you’ve had an MRI, it’s hard to judge him harshly. I was in one of those MRI tubes for about 45 minutes and I never want to go through that experience again. I thought I wasn’t claustrophobic . . . Until experiencing an MRI. Similar to being put in a 55 gallon drum and having Keith Moon play drums on it.
I read this week that Span is claustrophobic and didn’t like it either so he had a different kind done from outside the tube.
Noisy bastards.
Maddox at 3?
No
Blade was right – 3 is Matthews. Very clever hints, Snarkk…
Thanks Loo. I’m now thinking about re-careering as a cross word puzzle maker…
Did my neck and shoulder MRI a few years ago. 1 hour and 20 mins. It was the only way to get the fricking doctors to acknowledge that I actually HAD shoulder problems. The year of rehab I did was doing more damage. The rehab after the surgery took a year.
I love insurance-run health care.
Ahhh, missed the salute . . . I did like the all Gary OF.
First time I ever heard of an MRI was when Kevin Mitchell got one.
I never had one. Hope to keep it that way…
I was almost at the point of throwing up before they said, “That’s it.” I can’t even imagine doing an hour and 20 minutes.
Here’s the OFers list. Any of whom I’d take right now over what we have in LF and CF:
1. Bobby Murcer
2. Mahhhhvin Benard
3. Sarge Matthews
4. Brett Butler (Praise the Lord)
5. Marquis Grissom
6. Chili Davis
7. Candy Maldonado
Congrats to blade, I think he got ’em all. I think Giants fans may have hated Murcer as much as he hated the ‘Stick, most didn’t want to see Bobby Bonds go, but Murcer’s OPS was surprisingly to me damn good while he was here…
Trade was unpopular here, too.
Sad how young they both died.
Many of their career numbers were also very similar…
Tom Gugliota and Chris Webber had similar numbers when they were traded for each other. I think you know who the better player was.
Going with the thread theme,Kirk begging Scotty to get the lineup hitting:
Heh heh!
“I need more power, Scotty!”
“It’s going to take an hour, Captain!”
“You’ve got 10 minutes!”
“Aye aye, Captain!”
Where’s Pence?
Making a GD video with his wife?
Arroyo wont do that again.
If Arroyo doesn’t bounce that they get him out.
Cainer with a lot of pitches already. Get out of this Matty.
Wooooooo……
Damn. Been mentioned before by me and others, but I wish they would try Belt in the lead off spot. Sheesh, at least at home. Wasting that .390 OBP.
At least he takes walks. Shit.
Oh, it was strike 3. No pick off.
I like Belt better when he’s just standing there watching pitches go by.
Remind me again who leads the team in HRs…and who did last year too.
leading this team in HR’s is hardly an endorsement of their power
Giants HRs coming into tonite:
Belt 4 in 84 ABs
Panik 1 in 75
Nunez 0 in 83
Pence 1 in 89
Posey 1 in 56
I think that’s more of an indictment of the rest of the Giants lineup than it is praise for Belt. He’s always had a knack for vanishing for extended stretches of time.
Has this team put together two good offensive games in a row yet this year?
my point was that for the last 8 or 9 games he’s been a walkin’ strikin’ out machine. I prefer when he walks to the K’s. That’s all.
Understand, and I’m disappointed he hasn’t hit very well after the initial road trip.
But a bomb every 20 ABs pace would equal 25 in 500 ABs.
The rest of them have a ways to go to catch up to that.
I haven’t exactly been singing the praises of “the rest of them”, either.
At this point, I’d be down with Gillaspe playing for Pence vs righties for the foreseeable future…..
Sort of chuckling to myself . . . After that hit, I was thinking – 3 3rd basemen getting hits recently and only one can play.
I like this attitude. Rooting for him. Niners 7th rd pick.
Haha, I love that “me against the world” shit. Go get ’em, kid.
this would be a nice time for me to have to eat my words.
Chacin sucks I’m tired of hearing these announcers jack off to him
that’ll work….
It seems like the Giants have had more than their fair share of dying quails hit against them this year.
And another one.
this dukey bullshit is ridiculous. Just bad luck.
Jesus. Seriously?
Wow.
2 on one out and Buster and Morse fail to add on. 1 out later we was down 2 instead of up 2.
Fuck. Have any of these been hit hard?
no. This is bullshit.
Looks like the team is still looking for that lock-down 6th inning reliever…..
lol. Yes, the pivotal 6th inning
Well, there’s that one…
Now THAT ONE was hit hard, lol
Nice play by Arroyo.
I think it was Loo who wondered about the market for “gofundme..”
That ain’t no bloop. Ramirez has got to be gonzo, and he can take Stratton with him
This is just shit baseball. I’ve got better things to do with my time.
I have to find some…
This bum is the Gorkys of the bullpen.
Cain had a very nice pitching line for 5 innings. ……..
They need to get rid of Gorky and stubbs
Also get rid of the Gorkys (Stratton) and Stubbs (Ramirez) of the bullpen.
Legends.
Could be the first of many down years for our favorite team…
Stubbs is gonna be .007 pretty soon.
I asked last weekend when Ramirez got tuned by the Rox if he could be DFA’d during the game. I’ll ask it again right now…
Take Stratton too.
Kind of amazing that there are probably a good handful of players on the current 25-man roster that we would all like to see just GONE….
You guys should have your Flapalooza at a bowling alley…
They closed 19th Ave Bowl.
I guess I wont miss much when I leave for Saigon next Saturday.
Be nice to get a couple doinks of our own.
Nevermind. Losing to the dregs yet again.
He’s not playing tonight, but I put much of the blame on Span insofar as the hitters are concerned. Not only has he been missing in action (only 14 games played), but he’s worthless when he’s playing. Zero steals, .245 OBP, Mendoza line batting average of .200, and -0.3 WAR. For a lead off hitter, that’s pathetic.
In fairness, I actually thought he did his job last season (contrary to what most of you thought about him last season).
I wonder what figure is higher: Stratton and Ramirez’s ERA or the price of a beer at AT&T?
Ramirez getting the DFA hang out to dry treatment by Bochy and Rags. I kind of think that stinks. You embarrass the guy before he gets cut, not to mention people paid good money to see a competitive game. I call bullshit on Biochy for letting that farce go on…
it’s an indictment for them, too. They’re the ones that chose to keep this guy over keeping a second lefty in the BP. Apparently they liked him so much they were willing to put together an imbalanced bullpen to keep him. I hope they like what they saw tonight. That’s THEIR boy.
Definition of humiliation?
Padre announcers rubbing it in . . . Cameras pan to folks leaving the stadium and the Padre announcer saying, “Hey, there’s still plenty of baseball left in this game.”
. . . umm, no.
Hate it when that happens. I remember on more than one occasion listening to Nationals’ announcers laughing and making fun of the Giants during some awful games. I think I remember you talking about Rox’ announcers doing the same. Of course, I also seem to remember that those Nats’ announcers were doing that in 2012, so…. the final verdict was sweet then.
I usually get the other teams announcers when I watch the Giants on the internet. What pisses me off about them (and the Rockies announcers) is the fact that they have been invisible for more than a decade. No playoffs or even close to being in a West Division race. Fuck them.
Somebody posted this today on a NY Ranger blog. This season at least, Giant fans should relate…
Today I realized that watching the Rangers play is one of the least enjoyable things that I experience in all of my life. The entire time I watch the game, I do nothing but suffer. Before the Rangers had their meltdown and they were up by two, I wasn’t experiencing the slightest bit of pleasure whatsoever. It was pure hell and that’s when they were up by 2. Watching the Rangers play, even in the games they wind up winning, is the least pleasurable experience in my life. Its worse than going to work, its worse than going to the dentist, its worse than going to the Dr., its worse than going to the gym with the worst hangover of my life. Yet I keep coming back again and again and again. I run to the TV or to the game when I have tickets. I rearrange my life and twist myself into a pretzel so I can engage in the pure hell that is watching the Rangers…
i was hoping he was gonna call them pussies a couple of times. We can’t ever feel this way. This year is irritating and it pisses me off that the brass lazily put together this bullshit but 3 in 5 makes it impossible for this to ever be the least enjoyable thing in my life, lol. This dude needs to get a hobby or some pussy or something.
Can’t believe Bochy let this chump go back out there after Giants scored. He did exact same thing he did last inning, walk a chump hitter and then give up a no doubt long 3 run HR. I’m mostly on his side but with 12 pitchers Bochy had to have a better option.
“Strike 3 call and side is retired”, said Kuiper as he’s in middle of some story with Kruk. Problem is the hitter swung and missed. That’s about third or fourth f-up I’ve heard just tonite. guy is going downhill just as fast as Giants are.
wouldn’t surprise me if Kuip is boozing in the booth.
Twice in the same inning he said “Get ’em on, get ’em in, and get ’em over!
From the tenor of these posts, I’m going to assume the game isnt going very well.
Things were going swimmingly until the 6th Dawg. Then pfffttt!
One word for Padres 6th: Snowman.
Blade, Span has company, although he is the highest paid. Here are the OPSs of the relevant supporting cast coming in tonight:
Span 525
Nunez 550
Marrero 381
Hernandez 376
Gillaspie 387
Hundley 536
Parker 455
Hill 481
Stubbs 237
These numbers are impossibly bad and all you need to know about why the offense hasn’t even been serviceable. Not that it’s the story tonight . . . .
Agree James. You could throw a dart and hit a reason. I only point out Span for 2 reasons: 1. I have defended him in the past; and, 2. IMO the lead off hitter is the catalyst for the offense.
Yes, greater expectations for Span. But Posey, Panik, Crawford, Belt, Pence are all at or near where they should be. The utter lack of contributions from the rest of the the roster is distorting the normal ups and downs of the front line position players.
Yes, when I looked at the stats, I noted the same thing (although Crawford’s OPS and OBP are way lower than last season’s totals).
In the off-season, I talked about the front office needing to do something bold. And *bold* probably wasn’t even necessary, at that time, I just wanted to see it. Going 7 or 8 games under .500 in the first month of the season is nearing the zone of boldness out of necessity….
here ya go. Something to put this game out of our misery.
I think we are past bold Paul. With the payroll we have now, I seriously think we’re in the wilderness for the next 3-4 years (as Loo has mentioned). This seems very much like the Yankees circa 3-4 years ago, where they just decided to opt out on the free agent market and let their bloated contracts expire.
One time years ago I was half-jokingly lobbying for a Flapalooza (i dont think that term had been coined yet) at the bowling alley in Pinole –hometown of the legendary Del Mar Dennis. I remember insitsting that my team consist of myself, MacDog and another Dog of some sort who used to post on here.
Kind of cool to think I now have actually hung out with MacDog.
For you east coasters, Pinole is a little town about 45 minutes from SF. THe dudes from Green Day are from that area. Gino Torreta too.
As has been pointed out before Giants have made trades to beef up the OF. As has also been mentioned, there are few candidates on current roster that would bring back quality player(s)/prospects.
Seriously, if Arroyo can play SS, would it be feasible to explore what Crawford would bring?
If Belt is going to be part of the OF, until such as a Slater or Williamson (rehabbing in Sac right now) take LF could Giants get a quality CF/late inning pen help in exchange for Belt?
Both of these 2 are just starting to get paid handsomely too remember and are under 30 iirc.
Thoughtful comment Willie. I don’t know if the Giants front office is capable of being that bold. Equally important, their perception is probably not as pessimistic as we are. I do think we will be “sellers” if we’re in 4th or last place come the trade deadline. Should that happen, I see Cueto being the number one asset being dealt, in lieu of him having opt out power at the end of this season.
Giants are just oddly constructed team right now, with too many IFs and too many sucky OFs and pen guys.
I think even if Cueto leaves to go get more $$$ the SPs would be OK with some new blood from minors.
OF, idk. I don’t think Giants can hang with better teams in league with all kids out there.
Span bugs me too. He came out of ST proclaiming health from offseason and has been hurt twice and done zero with bat.
Pence is 34 and making $18 mil, has looked funky in the OF a couple times, and you wonder how much is left.
Other than dealing Belt/Craw I don’t see how they balance the team and fill the holes with enough talent to compete with LA or grab a WC.
