Pining Our Hopes on The Nunies

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 19, 2017

There’s a good chance we see a lot of rain over the next couple of days in St. Louis so expect delays. I know it’s a *way of life* for people out there but I couldn’t imagine living in a place where I was always having to run for cover.

It is time for “The Nunies” on this team to step up. The Nunies are different from The Bowker Gang in one specific way: they have more talent than those guys but possibly less drive. The Great and All Powerful and All Knowing and Sometimes Hustling Nunie is chapter president. Our entire reliever core as well as Moore and Samardzija are his disciples. Look, these guys are playing on the San Francisco Giants now, not the freaking Twins or the Rays or the A’s. They need to start playing like WINNERS. Scutaro and Huff and Burrell and Morse and Voggy and all those GREAT Giants from the recent past weren’t very good stat guys. But there were all winners when it counted most. And while this isn’t the post season there is no more margin for error. We can’t have any more of this fiddle-de-do bullshit and go 1-6 on this trip.

Show who you are NOW. If you can’t do it, you can’t do it. Greatness isn’t for everyone. When Pence gave his speech in Cincinnati back in 2012 I now realize it wasn’t so much the speech that was the catalyst but rather it was the guys who were effected by the speech. Those guys had it in them to be great.

Pence could *speech* Nunie up till the cows come home and the helmet would still fly off when he runs. But we need more than discarded helmets scattered around the infield…..

Giants road ERA is something ghastly, over 5.00. As Flav mentioned before, Giants have also struggled to hit well in good hitting yards. Time to clean both of those up.

Teams Giants have beaten have gone into immediate tailspin too. Reds have lost 6 in a row and Mets 7. dodgers unfortunately get Marlins, who are as bad as Padres and have dropped 9 of last 10.

Great post, Flav! Giddy up Giants…time to play like champions.

  3. djloo27 said, on May 19, 2017 at 6:59 am

How do you come up with this stuff every day, so early in the morning? The Nunies need a winning road trip to build some confidence. In my mind they could sweep this roadie and I would still have no hope without a 100% Bumgarner. Span would’ve been a great fit for the Bowker Gang unless the recent rejuvenation is for real.

Anyway, there’s a very knowledgeable Giant fan that calls WFAN here in NY. Yesterday he got Yankee fan Francesa very excited about taking on Cueto for OF prospect Clint Frazier…

    • Flavor said, on May 19, 2017 at 7:19 am

You should see what I come up with around lunch time. It would blow your mind. Lulz

    • willedav said, on May 19, 2017 at 7:38 am

yanks and stros both are said to have ton of prospects. cueto belt yada yada…yanks could use some help on left side of IF too…

      Is that Dennis from Yonkers?

      • djloo27 said, on May 19, 2017 at 8:41 am

Yes it is, Mac. Did you happen to hear it?

      • Macdog said, on May 19, 2017 at 8:51 am

        I didn’t hear it.

  4. dirtnrocksnomo said, on May 19, 2017 at 7:01 am

And on the 5th day the Sometimes Hustling Nunie chapter was created. Nunie came before his disciples and said, “remember, teach a man to hit and you’ll forever be hounding him to run out grounders. Also, hustle is just a word but fake hustle is a way of life. Now, wear your helmets just so and let’s get after it.”

    • Flavor said, on May 19, 2017 at 7:17 am

      Lol, solid gold!

    • chipower9 said, on May 19, 2017 at 9:23 am

LMAO…that is some funny shit, Dirt.

  5. willedav said, on May 19, 2017 at 8:00 am

Dirt that’s funny. Honest tho I haven’t noticed lack of hustle, just a lot of groundouts, often on first pitch He’s having such a weird season that’s way worse than last year.
Nunez leads team with 9 doubles and of course 11 steals…also leads team in GIDPs with 5.
0 triples 1 HR 6 walks in 150+ plate appearances. OPS of .629 (OB under .300), down 100 points from 2016 with Giants. Doesn’t K much, so BABIP must be awful—is that bad luck or just plain bad hitting?
    Minus WAR according to B/R.
Giants have better IFs at every position so no idea what happens once Pence returns.

    • zumiee said, on May 19, 2017 at 8:05 am

The lack of triples with this 2017 team is kind of amazing, given the Triples Alley.

Going to the Astros game tonight. Gone are the days when I could buy a $30 seat right behind the dugout. I have to admit, being able to watch these guys every night has been a nice alternative to the Giants of late. I honestly don’t think I have seen a team like this since the ’93 Giants. They still need another starter (Cueto?) and a situational lefty reliever, but other than that they are set in all facets of the game.

    • willedav said, on May 19, 2017 at 8:34 am

would a guy like Marisnick help SF? any others in farm system?
Have fun…my co has 3 locations in Houston area, met the mgrs. including one big sports fan originally from philly trying to figure out where to retire. very nice people

      • wilcojoe said, on May 19, 2017 at 9:24 am

Marisnick plays great defense, and has good speed but not much of a bat. Though he has never had a chance to play every day, so he could be a Brandon Crawford type hitter if given the chance. He does have some pop. I would love to see Marisnick in CF every day for the Giants. If the Astros make a move for starter, I could see him being packaged along with a prospect or two.

      • wilcojoe said, on May 19, 2017 at 9:27 am

Last I checked the Astros had 3 kids in the Top 100 prospects list. One of which is Kyle Tucker, an OF with serious power. Last I heard he was off to a strong start. He would most definetly be a part of any package for an arm.

  7. alleykat69 said, on May 19, 2017 at 8:27 am

Yeah nice to see the Astros turn it around WJ!
No longer a doormat for other teams to wipe their cleats on.

Colt 45 jerseys were the bomb and with and Wynn across the back even better!
Though if I look into one maybe “Toy Cannon” on the back! Where have you seen them online?

Very cool, Wilco; have a great time!
As much as I like watching baseball on TV or listening to it on the radio, it’s just really cool to see games in person, even minor league games.

The pink “Mother’s Day” jerseys are being sold on all the usual websites that sell MLB stuff. No mention of any percentage of their sales being donated to the cause. Who’s kidding who?

And wait until they roll out the baby blue father’s day garb. I really do not like all this over the top bullshit, but if it truly is funneling money into causes such as cancer research, I’ll keep my biases to myself…

Only pink I want to see is in my steak (medium rare guy when I do eat beef) and between the legs of some female hottie!

I’m not a fan of columnist David Brooks, in general; but his description of Trump is amusing to me.
“Trump is a guy whose thoughts are often just six fireflies beeping randomly in a jar.”

  12. zumiee said, on May 19, 2017 at 9:51 am

It’s kind of cool how the Cubs have Friday day games at Wrigley.
Their team does seem to have lost a bit of its “edge” from last season, though. It is really hard to repeat back-to-back years, as we well know. Everything has to go just right, two years in a row, which is so hard in baseball.
The randomness of injuries alone is staggering. Atlanta’s Freeman is out for two months now after getting hit by a pitch. He was having a great season.

    • zumiee said, on May 19, 2017 at 5:26 pm

I see it being used a lot these days to mean something that happens naturally, and not just talking about crops that are grown without pesticides. The whole SABR movement rose up organically. Some fans brought forth some new ideas, the movement grew, and today it’s a huge part of the baseball establishment.

  24. alleykat69 said, on May 19, 2017 at 6:33 pm

Yeah Wayne Walker was the man in the 80′ as far as sports anchors go. He was cool on the air as he was in a locker room.He had the players respect cause he didn’t give a shit about future exposure, he already had it.RIP Wayne Walker, sorry the effects of Parkinson Disease did you in you will be sorely missed..

  25. alleykat69 said, on May 19, 2017 at 6:40 pm

Here’s a crazy side trivia about Wayne Walker,
15 years in the NFL as a outside linebacker, plus 3 pro bowls.. But also was a placekicker and made 345 points which ranks 9th all time in Lions history, pretty cool diversity..

The usual hapless offense. The talk shows always diss the people that call in to fire Bam Bam. That it’s an idiotic suggestion. That it’s on the players, not him. Well, if he makes no difference, then there is no downside to fire his ass and have somebody with a new POV be the batting psychologist…

  30. xoot said, on May 19, 2017 at 6:54 pm

back in the early 90s I happened to see Walker in sweats jogging through Fisherman’s Wharf one morning. Noticing local tv celebrities on the street is generally not much of a pleasure, in part because they usually assume it should be. Will Clark’s good friend Gary effing Park used to hang out in places on College Ave. in Oakland waiting for people to recognize him. Frank effing Somerville does the same thing these days. Eff off. But on that day when I happened to see Walker jogging in the tourist district, thoroughly unconcerned about who noticed him or who didn’t, I was pleased, immediately. My natural response to seeing him was instinctively positive. He was great on everything he did related to the 49ers, and in those days he was the most enjoyable of the guys who handled the quick, end-of-the-news-show sports reports. RIP.

  32. gianthead said, on May 19, 2017 at 7:11 pm

I see the story of Wayne Walker’s passing…what a Bay Area legend. I had the pleasure running into him the year I lived in the City either late 1992 or early 93 at a cheap burger place I think on Lombard late at night. Was there a Klown Alley there then????

We said hello and my old roommate and buddy and I were arguing about one of the channel 5 female night time anchors getting something like a $3 million a year contract (which is probably like $9 mill). My buddy thought I was full of shit. So I see Wayne and ask him if itbwas true and he nodded yes…if Wayne Walkwr said something, it had to be true. We chatted for a few more seconds and think he was headed home I think in Marin…lovely guy and real mensch…RIP…

    • gianthead said, on May 19, 2017 at 7:19 pm

Ok I am slightly off…$3 mill then would be $5.1 mill today. Still damn good of a salary…

  36. gianthead said, on May 19, 2017 at 7:27 pm

Talking to NATS fans around here, they think they will make the move to get Melancon back. Whonwould Melancon veto that? The NATS are rolling in cash and by taking that contract I doubt they would have to give up much in return in prospects…the pressure will be on ownership of the NATS to make a run this year and they will spend accordingly…

    • Lurker John said, on May 19, 2017 at 7:54 pm

I think if they call it now, the score reverts back to the start of the top of the 7th, meaning the Giants would lose. They can also postpone it, and continue it tomorrow. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

      • zumiee said, on May 19, 2017 at 8:10 pm

If this game doesn’t resume, the Giants get the win, per the rain rules in MLB.

  38. alleykat69 said, on May 19, 2017 at 8:19 pm

It’s only a official game after 5 innings, well technically 4 for the home team who doesn’t have to bat if they get the visiting team out in the top of the inning..
So if your a visiting team down in the top of the 5 th with 2 outs, you pray for rain ☔️ and hope the game ends right their and get resumed the next day are at a future date at the point of where the game ended..

    • zumiee said, on May 19, 2017 at 8:30 pm

The most important thing is the Giants stayed under the luxury tax threshold. The owners are pleased, I assume.

      • xoot said, on May 19, 2017 at 8:36 pm

It’s hard to tell because they compute the threshold based on per-year contract averages and perks, but I think the Giants are OVER this year, just a bit. So they’re just trying to keep the tax low this year while they prune things so that they’re under next year, after Cain’s $20M+ departs.

      • zumiee said, on May 19, 2017 at 8:39 pm

I still can’t believe Ron Bryant won 24 games in one year for a middling Giants team. Jim Palmer never won 24 games in a season. Tom Seaver did it once.
Zum- you listen to Car Seat Headrest? I’m digging their album.

    • zumiee said, on May 19, 2017 at 8:52 pm

Yeah Busby was a reach, but i think he won 20 once and threw a no hitter or 2.
Did we take the lead? Im house sitting for a friend and cant get the fucking tv to work–even though he told me the channel ghe Giants game was on.

    • Macdog said, on May 19, 2017 at 8:55 pm

Giants won 88 that year, that’s a little better than middling.

      • sandog said, on May 19, 2017 at 9:02 pm

        Damn you MacDog!
I still say it was a hell of an outlier season by Bryant. Fergie Jenkins never won 24 games. Neither did Bert Blyleven or Jerry Koosman. Or Luis Tiant or Ron Guidry or Steve Busby. Or Whitey Ford or Robin Roberts or Don Drysdale.
Don’t bother fact checking all those…you’ve got better things to do with your time.

Ferguson Jenkins had a 24-win season and a 25-win season for some pretty crappy Cubs teams.

that’s a HR and double in last 5 ABs for Nunez. Span Nunez Arroyo with 2 hits Belt and Craw with 3, 9 hits 6 runs off Cards pen. Nice way to end it too.
Props to Daniel for checking in, good guy. goes all the way back to Pawlie and “Starry Night”, one of my fav baseball books of all time.

Flem on radio said Nunez made fine running catch coming in on bloop in first inning too.
Speaking of pen woes, A’s won in walk off HR fashion over Red sox last night…vs. Heath Hembree.
