It was completely shocking to me that we won that game. Giving up the lead late usually means we’re left for dead. Nunie awoke at the right time. And I’ll be the first to admit I thought Melancon was done for the year–really surprising he’s come back after just a week of rest. For being one of the worst teams in the NL, and for not being surprised by that, I sure am being surprised lately. :0 🙂 🙂

It’s Preakness Day so I’ll catch you guys on the flip side.

LA hit 3 HRs off Marlins pitching then one of the Miami relievers hit a batter after one of them.
So then in 9th with a 7-2 lead Dodgers threw behind the back of Stanton.
See how Mattingly handles this back where he used to manage.

From Chron today: “The Giants went 2 years without winning when behind in 9th. Now they have done it in consecutive road games.”

Loo, not sure if you’re paying as little attention to the Preakness as you did to the Derby but I think I might have a horse to beat the favorites: Cloud Computing. Should be 12-1 or so, maybe a little better. Make it so.

    • Flavor said, on May 20, 2017 at 11:55 am

I should add, his t-graph numbers are right there with the 4/5. So I’m hoping he spices us the tri/super. A win would caus me to buy lots and lots of Saran wrap. 2nd or 3rd will work tho.

I’ve become somewhat detached from the sport the last year or so, but I will heavily root for you, Flavor…

Great come back last night. Nunie’s shot in the 9th had to be the hardest hit ball of the year for the Giants, after Posey’s 17th inning moon shot. What a frozen rope. It’s good to seem him starting to come around, as is the rest of the offense. 7-2 in the last 9. Keep it going, boys!

What must Greenwald’s kid think — toiling for 15+ years in minor league broadcasting, barely a sniff of the major leagues. Affeldt rolls into the booth yukking it up after retiring, because he’s got nothing else to do but run some of his charity events and mow the lawn in Yakima or Spokane during the summer…

  5. snarkk said, on May 20, 2017 at 12:24 pm

Hopefully the bats are waking up a little. The Card’s guy tonite is a young flamethrower, so probably a good number of Ks coming. But, Gints seems to do better against an unknown fireballer than an unknown slop thrower…

Sorry to hear about Wayne Walker’s passing. I haven’t lived in CA since the ’80’s, but I remember his work from the ’70’s. RIP

    • Lurker John said, on May 20, 2017 at 12:35 pm

There a short video on SFGate of Joe Montana talking about Wayne. Pretty cool the respect he garnered from the athletes he interviewed.

      • Lurker John said, on May 20, 2017 at 2:01 pm

Wonder how they’re all hitting over the past couple of weeks.

Message to San Dog and Zum…re Cat Seat Headrest and the origins of the name.

The band is the lead singer, Will Toledo, who writes everything himself. He is from the main town near us in Leesburg, VA. Probably a town of about 40k when he was growing up. As you can tell, he was one of these geeky talented kids and he would get dragged around as a teenager in his mom’s car to sports and other activities for his siblings.

He started to write his own music and started recording in his mom’s car during these moments. All his early recordings were from his mom’s car. True story and very cool…

    • Lurker John said, on May 20, 2017 at 2:03 pm

I guess that explains the name. lol

        That’s a Fun Fact G-man!

    • chipower9 said, on May 20, 2017 at 3:49 pm

Cool knowledge. I know NOTHING of him or his band, but will give it a listen.

We’re out to see a very good local band tonight. If you have a chance, google “Island of Black and White,” and check out some of their music videos and unicycle shenanigans.

      Very entertaining!

  9. snarkk said, on May 20, 2017 at 2:35 pm

If you look at the highlights last night, Nunie totally misplayed that ball over his head in left. Took a 90 degree angle when he should have angled back towards the wall. That should have been a catch. And Williamson just totally botched that ball against the wall in right center. Average quality defensive skills in OFers would have made those plays…

    • djloo27 said, on May 20, 2017 at 3:40 pm

Mac looked particularly bad on that play.
I didn’t have the energy last night to berate him for it…

    • chipower9 said, on May 20, 2017 at 3:45 pm

Mac is more horrible, than not, in The OF, and his current hitting leaves a bit to be desired. Hope he can turn it around…would love to see him “blow up,” but I’m not holding my breath.

  10. chipower9 said, on May 20, 2017 at 3:43 pm

In regards to Snarkk’s 12:24. On KNBR this morning, they were discussing the “lost art of pitching,” and comparing “slop throwers” (guys with ability to spot all of their pitches) vs. the “fire ballers.” They were saying basically that almost all of the Giant’s BP is fire ballers. So when they come into a tight situation with runners on, and the expectation/need is to spot your pitches, they can’t do it. Was an interesting discussion, and something I think has some credence.

They further talked about today’s scouts, and how almost all of their interest with HS and college pitchers is on what’s showing on the gun…not whether the kid can “actually pitch.”

    • Macdog said, on May 20, 2017 at 4:12 pm

      • Flavor said, on May 20, 2017 at 4:20 pm

his T-Graph fig for the Wood was much better than what the Beyer speed figure showed. No offense to Andy, he’s done a lot for the sport. But his speed figures are pretty dated and are for, in fact, suckers….

  26. alleykat69 said, on May 20, 2017 at 5:40 pm

How the fuck can I watch this game with Ass Jerkoff spilling more dumbshit blabber then even Jeremy Affedlt??
Combine that with the fact he was the most hated player in baseball, even on his own teams, what a fucking doucebag!!!

    • zumiee said, on May 20, 2017 at 5:46 pm

If only there was a way to turn the sound down. A kind of volume control device. 🙂
But I hear ya. I like having all the ambient sounds, the crack of the bat and all that. But to get the ambient sounds, we have to also hear these broadcasters.

      • Lurker John said, on May 20, 2017 at 5:48 pm

What a great option that’d be, to turn down the announcers and just listen to the game.

        Totally agree.

      • gianthead said, on May 20, 2017 at 6:09 pm

    Ken Reitz #5
    Armando Benitez#6
    Manny Trillo#7
Theirs more but I’ll leave room for other Flappers to gripe..

  31. zumiee said, on May 20, 2017 at 5:55 pm

I can’t remember who said it on the Flap, maybe Willie, that broadcasters over-explain everything these days. Everything has to be dissected to the nth degree, so we end up with non-stop broadcaster blabber about everything. It’s kind of exhausting.

    • zumiee said, on May 20, 2017 at 6:01 pm

That ESPN Sunday night crew is off the charts exhausting.

      • Lurker John said, on May 20, 2017 at 6:05 pm

They never shut up and have gall to put the actual game on a reduced screen while what’s-her-face does a pre-recorded interview.

  32. Lurker John said, on May 20, 2017 at 5:59 pm

Dare I say Shark is figuring it out? He’s been lights out the past couple of weeks. Even in that game he got roughed up in he ended up going 7 innings to save the pen. He seems to be taking a little off his fastball and mixing his pitches better, not overthrowing as much. His breaking ball has been very effective.

    • djloo27 said, on May 20, 2017 at 6:01 pm

Saw the discussion about Arroyo a couple days ago…people forget he is still 21. Do people remember what Miguel Cabrera looked like when he first came up. I don’t think Arroyo will “bulk” up like that but Ibcan see him being a Ron Santo type ofnplayer as he ages and that is just fine with me…

    • djloo27 said, on May 20, 2017 at 8:39 pm

He’s only trailing him by about 2,200 hits, 339 HRS, and 1,300 or so RBI’s…

      • gianthead said, on May 20, 2017 at 8:59 pm

I think he can get there in a 20 year career…that would average just 110 hits, 17 homers and just 65 rbis a year…piece a cake!!!!

Interestingly and oddly, if you look at Arroyo’s current stats so far for the year, he would project almost exactly those numbers to around 18 homers and 70 rbis this season. But this is as a 21 year old rookie, he is going to way out-perform those numbers in his first 10 years in the league…

Great win…going to give us a sense of hope. JD Martinez has been in fire since coming back this week…what would it take now to land him???? Do they take a mid-tier pitching prospect at this point?

  65. Lurker John said, on May 20, 2017 at 9:22 pm

It seems like Nunie is settling in as a left fielder, getting more comfortable out there. If he continues his offensive surge and remains serviceable as a left fielder, and with Arroyo doing a nice job at 3rd, maybe the outfield is pretty well solidified, as least for now. Span is doing well since returning, and Pence should be back in a week or so.

    I dunno, just spitballin’.
