Close Not Enough But Better Than Getting Waxed

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 16, 2017

I didn’t see that comeback but only losing by 1 at Coors is almost like a win. That’s one other thing I forgot yesterday: at least the Giants aren’t giving up. They lost Nunie AND Buster in the same inning and still came back from a big deficit to make the game close. Watching that is certainly better than watching a team just go through the motions.

My A’s fan buddy was texting me maniacally about the A’s calling up some new 3rd baseman who supposedly is fantastic at defense with 30 bomb potential. Made him sound like Matt Williams. He lathered himself up into a froth over this guy. I don’t get it. Baseball seasons are too long, as well as off seasons, to keep abdicating seasons one after the other. After winning 3 in 5 all I want is to win another one. It’s very tough to muster the “oh boy look at our prospects, wait till next year!” philosophy. But who knows, if we had any prospects maybe I’d get exciting about them.

I think it will be cathartic to us as fans to do a rebuild. Loved you Hunter and Bochy and company but time to sell off assets.

How we lost to the Cubs last season in Game 4 was a reflection of Giant failures from the way past. I think nearly every one of us thought once we got to Cueto back at Wrigley for Game 5 that we had that series won. Because that was the magic we had in 2010, especially 2012 and then 2014.

But them came the melt down im the 9th. We need to exorcise those demons and burn down that team and get what we can from the assets we have and rebuild the magic. Learn from what Theo did with the Cubs and stockpile young assets…I think we need new energy with a new manager as a high priority. I think we let one great potential manager get away with Bud Black…

I agree to some extent. There are pieces that should be kept. Outside of Cueto, I think they should keep the starters in-tact. And the IF (outside of 3B) should stay, too. Maybe deal Belt if they can get a good return, but Craw and Panik should stay, IMO.

Agree on Pence. Go get a legit OFer in the off-season, and see what Slater, Mac, Parker, etc. can do.

And while I love me some Bochy, I do think it may be time to get new leadership in the dugout, too.

Like I mentioned in response to Loo’s post below, it will be very interesting to see what they do at the deadline.

One other thing…I have little to no confidence in Booby (that is a GEM by Dirt) Evans.

I don’t think we would have any luck moving Smardaramjam because of that bloated contract. Still think Nats will take Melancon…

  2. djloo27 said, on June 16, 2017 at 7:24 am

If Smardj can keep it going for a few more weeks, he may be our most sought after guy…

    • chipower9 said, on June 16, 2017 at 7:29 am

      Only possible hitch is:

“limited no-trade protection (may select eight clubs to which he will accept a trade).”

Johnny Showcase sure as fuck isn’t holding-up his end of the deal.

As I have said many times of late, the trade deadline is going to be interesting.

Nothing from Gloating One after Hill got hammered by the Tribe. I think he’s off base about LA not re-signing Greinke. Guess that is what bugs me–he’s on fire when they win, otherwise silence.
Yes Greinke’s stats are down, but AZ is total hitters park with rock hard fast IF that plays way different than Chavez, especially at night.

And Dodgers have in his place:
Hill, oft injured who has thrown only 35 innings this year with ERA over 5.00
Ryu another oft injured and Maeda with ERAs only slightly better and have given up almost HR every 5 innings.
Wood and McCarthy, both doing fine so far. But do they make bones in playoffs or continue Dodger frustration?

Sorry, after the inevitable playoff faceplant by Kershaw, I’d rather have Greinke than anyone else listed.

Rooster’s ok, Willie. He just likes to fuck with us. He’s admitted it…

An old girlfriend texted me late last night asking me if I was watching the game (she’s hardcore Giants). Fuck no I wasn’t watching the game. When Gail and I came out from getting dinner last night and got into the truck, I said “let’s see how badly the Giants are getting their asses kicked.” Uh, they were getting their asses handed to them to the tune of 8-1. So, no fucking way I was firing that bitch-up when I got home. I did try to find the game after Pam texted me, but could not find it (it was on some archaic channel last night, I believe), so said to hell with it and hit the rack.

THEN, after I get my ass in bed and am about to slip into snooze land, Irish Kev texts me. Remind me to kick your ass next time I see you Kevin (either right before or after you buy me a beer). 😉

I do agree Flav that at least (well, sometimes) they are trying. Other days, it does look like they are going through the motions.

I love what Slater is doing. Again…small sample size, but ya gotta like what you see with this kid. Question is, can he sustain it….

  5. djloo27 said, on June 16, 2017 at 7:52 am

    Psychotic break from reality time:

I am contemplating offering Belt, Panik, Strickland and Arroyo to the Mets in exchange for de’Grom, d’Arnaud, and Flores. Buster moves to first, Specs takes over second, Flores takes third, d’Arnaud catches and de’Grom’s a stud in our rotation. For the Mets, Belt and Panik replace FA’s to be – Duda and Walker. Arroyo takes third and they call up their hotshot SS prospect. We may be stuck with Pence and Span for one more year, so the outfield and bullpen will have to be rebuilt through FA or prospects obtained at the deadline…

    • willedav said, on June 16, 2017 at 8:29 am

Maybe Belt does need change of scenery. Dunno what’s wrong with him or why the BA has sunk to .225. Bochy has kept in LU batting 3rd and he’s just been awful.
Isn’t Mets SP rotation hurting tho?

      • djloo27 said, on June 16, 2017 at 8:36 am

In my fantasy trade world the Met rotation next year would be Thor, Matz, Lugo, Harvey and Gsellman. Not bad.
Trading the popular de’Grom is extremely unlikely but he does have a grudge against management for nickel and diming him while under their control. He’s also not a kid – pushing 30, I believe…

      • djloo27 said, on June 16, 2017 at 8:55 am

        Forgot Wheeler – de’Grom turns 29 this week…

    • Flavor said, on June 16, 2017 at 8:35 am

      I’d do that.

      • djloo27 said, on June 16, 2017 at 8:38 am

        Yeah!

    • gianthead said, on June 16, 2017 at 8:42 am

At least Loo is consistent in his anti-Panik stance but no frickin way you trade Arroyo. We need the young hitters not trading them…rebuild mode…

  6. djloo27 said, on June 16, 2017 at 8:02 am

I still hold out some hope that the Doughy fuck and one or both of the O’Shit brothers get it together…

    • willedav said, on June 16, 2017 at 8:24 am

not unreasonable. I still think some contender would take Melancon. Giants already on hook for what $30 mil, so why not get a little creative if you can get back decent prospect?

      • djloo27 said, on June 16, 2017 at 8:46 am

        This is Melancon’s deal:

        4 years/$62M (2017-20)

Signed by San Francisco as a free agent 12/5/16
$20M signing bonus ($12M at signing, $8M deferred)
        2017: $4M, 2018: $10M, 2019: $14M, 2020: $14M
Melancon may opt out of contract after 2018 season
        Full no-trade protection
At signing, highest average annual value ever for a relief pitcher

  7. djloo27 said, on June 16, 2017 at 8:50 am

I think d’Arnaud and Flores could combine for 40 homers at ATT.
That would beat the 30 we were supposed to get from Duffy and Panik a year or two ago…

    • Flavor said, on June 16, 2017 at 10:10 am

40 bombs over how many seasons?

      • djloo27 said, on June 16, 2017 at 10:56 am

Ok, 35…Flores is a dead pull RH hitter with good power from what I’ve seen…

      • Flavor said, on June 16, 2017 at 12:08 pm

i actually like Flores a lot.

  8. alleykat69 said, on June 16, 2017 at 10:39 am

Slater is the only outfielder I would hang on to right now.(shit if he’s lighting fast can he cover all 3 positions?)Im done with the latest 2 of the bowker gang, Williamson&Parker are both busts as well as injury prone. You can’t help the club when your soaking in a tub all the time..

My analysis of the movie “Wakefield.”

    Spoiler alert

-Howard Wakefield wants a break from his family, so he fakes being a missing person.
-It turns out that his family doesn’t miss him very much.
    The End.

Pretty good, Zum. Reminds me of my favorite synopsis from NY Post TV listings a few years ago:

It reminds me of that episode of Night Court where a bunch of them are trying to think of something nice to say about Dan, and they’re really struggling to think of something, and finally one of them says: “Well………..he’s a mammal.”

      Tonight’s Giants lineup is…….mammals!

  13. alleykat69 said, on June 16, 2017 at 5:56 pm

Why does Hundley’s bat 6th and Slater 8th??
Shit even with this pathetic bunch I could fill out a better lu card!!

  14. alleykat69 said, on June 16, 2017 at 6:05 pm

Krukow .. Well that’s where they wanted to throw Arenado belt high inside corner, good pitch, hang with him, gotta tip your cap yada yada, some ownage on Shark 10-23 yeah that’s .435 and now 11-24 smoking double in the gap as they ketch a break as it bounces over the wall.

    • snarkk said, on June 16, 2017 at 6:08 pm

Kruk’s homerism is really going to be tested this crap season…

Watching the Giants is like having a 2×4 between my ankles in Misery watching Kathy Bates get her devious jollys off with a hammer, Painful very Painful 😖

  16. willedav said, on June 16, 2017 at 6:28 pm

Span goes yard right down the line…best way to do it at ATT too.

  17. willedav said, on June 16, 2017 at 6:45 pm

Didn’t Pence screw one up last night too? That ball should have been caught.
No idea how Smardz is still ahead.

  18. willedav said, on June 16, 2017 at 6:52 pm

Much as they beatch about Belt, Crawford can’t hit that high fastball either.

  19. Flavor said, on June 16, 2017 at 6:52 pm

Pence has been awful in the OF this year. It’s like a completely different guy out there. He’s taking routes after balls the way I might do it.

    • snarkk said, on June 16, 2017 at 6:55 pm

Yeah, whether its his marriage, his Paleo diet BS catching up to him, playing 2 years without a game off, whatever it is — Pence’s overall play has just nosedived…

  20. alleykat69 said, on June 16, 2017 at 6:53 pm

Pence use to be able to steal a base, now he’s a liability running.

  21. zumiee said, on June 16, 2017 at 6:55 pm

That’s kind of mindblowing that Craw’s HR yesterday was the team’s first 3-run HR this season.

  22. alleykat69 said, on June 16, 2017 at 6:59 pm

This team is so freaking old, freaking slow, their like they all take a laxative before the game and the only time they show speed is when one of them is sprinting to a toilet with their butt cheeks clinched…

  23. willedav said, on June 16, 2017 at 7:09 pm

  31. willedav said, on June 16, 2017 at 8:11 pm

Pence f-ed up another one on a hop right at him. wow now another one he can’t flag down.

Blade is right the yard is total joke. Rockies do have cool players tho.

    • Flavor said, on June 16, 2017 at 8:21 pm

the bat is at my office at work. Man, Pence just sucks. He’s a shell of himself.

  33. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on June 16, 2017 at 8:21 pm

The ongoing dissing of Belt is silly. Yeah, his batting average is weirdly low, but he still leads the team in HRs, 2nd in RBIs, and 2nd in OPS (not counting Slater, still a small sample size). Any condemnation of his offense is really a greater condemnation of the whole rest of the lineup if someone as lousy as he is can be leading the offense. How many years left on Pence’s contract? Any changes in the OF should probably start with him. Trouble is, some of the players I’d like to see jettisoned in some way are likely of no interest to any other teams….

  34. Macdog said, on June 16, 2017 at 8:25 pm

Mac the first one was directly over his head that carried (RF is live part of the yard tonight) but he misread it and hardly moved, then it was too late.
Second one was base hit in front of him that came up and bounced off his glove rolled to the wall for a triple.
Third one he just took bad angle going to his right and couldn’t grab it.
      Brad Penny night.

He did get a base hit past Arenado to drive in Panik, something that doesn’t usually happen for the Giants.

      • Macdog said, on June 16, 2017 at 8:45 pm

Ha, I got the visual from Blade and verbal from WD, that should cover it.

  35. alleykat69 said, on June 16, 2017 at 8:50 pm

If you could atleast get Parker&Williamson healthy, My outfield would be Parker LF,Slater CF, Williamson RF and keep rolling them out there “EVERYDAY”.. Most speed they can put out there to cover the huge outfields of the NL West…

  36. blade3colorado said, on June 16, 2017 at 8:50 pm

Gorkys is playing out of his mind of late. Point zero two above the Mendoza line.

    I jest . . . I jest.

    • willedav said, on June 16, 2017 at 9:20 pm

show you just how live coors Canaveral is, Gorks cracked one over Blackmon’s head and out of his reach one hop off the wall to deep RCF for a triple. Even if it’s last hit he ever gets as a Giant, it was good one.

  37. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on June 16, 2017 at 8:59 pm

Still some talk here about LF and let’s roll with Parker, Williamson, et al, and see what happens. I think they already tried that and many here were willing to try that going into the season. If Parker and Williamson can’t even stay healthy enough to “see what happens”, then that’s not gonna fly. The whole OF needs to be turned over. Maybe Slater gets the look that we thought maybe Parker/Mac should get, and maybe he actually sticks and even provides some hope for the future. Everyone else just plain kinda sucks and it’s time to move on.
