A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

At Least We Have Three Rings

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 21, 2017

It was nice to get a win last night. Nearly forgot what that was. I admit to getting a little envious of all the Dodgers young talent. Did you see those last 2 bombs Seager hit? Off the bat they just looked like pop ups to the opposite field. You have to have enormous power to get balls hit oppo at night at Dodger Stadium to go out. He and Bellinger are literally just flipping balls out of the yard. It’s irritating.

According to Yahoo Sports right now, Bochy is being very irresponsible with Smarge…

Well, it sure looked like another one of those “oh shit” games last night (bullpen made it interesting late). But a W is a W and it was sweet to finally see one. I don’t know this team has it in it, but it sure as hell would be cool to see them rattle off a little win streak for four or five games.

Slater with a tater – I am digging this kid. Hope he can sustain it for the remainder of the season and into next year.

Moore remains a conundrum. You always wonder “which” Matt Moore you are going to see in any given game. He sure as hell looked solid last night.

And yes, it gets a bit tough hearing about all of the bum’s young talent killing it, but I wouldn’t trade ANY of that for even ONE of our rings.

Nonsense from Maddon over the Rizzo play vs. SD solidifies my view he sucks. Even Torre admitted he went out of his way to slam into Pads rook C Austin Hedges. Pads mgr called it a cheap shot at the time.

so here’s Maddon: “I’m really confused why it gained so much attention only except for the fact that Buster Posey got hurt a couple years ago. Other than that, if it was a third string C for the Atlanta Braves that got hurt 3 years ago this (the rule) wouldn’t be in existence.”

Doofus continues: “Again it’s all precipitated by one play that happened several years ago that to me was just bad technique on the part of the C, so that’s where I get really flustered by this conversation, because to me it should not even exist.”

Bochy didn’t mention him by name but said, “I don’t really care to visit it. Anybody who goes into that they don’t know what they’re talking about where Buster was at on that play.”

    • Flavor said, on June 21, 2017 at 7:38 am

oh Bochy went off on him in his pre-game show yesterday. At least, *going off* for him. He def thinks Maddon is FOS

      • chipower9 said, on June 21, 2017 at 8:17 am

Yep. Caught that. Bochy definitely was in disagreement with Maddon.

  4. sandog said, on June 21, 2017 at 7:57 am

I appreciate what you did there, Flav! It is appropriate as well, as this has definitely been a “Season in the Abyss.”

The amount of talent the Dodgers have right now drives me nuts. Seager and Bellinger are starting to looking like another Mantle/Maris combination at this point. 2 of my Dodger fan friends were at that game last night.
Between them and the Padres getting over on us as well this year, I’m taking tons of heat this year.
All I really care about in MLB is that the Giants win and the Dodgers lose. I don’t give a crap about what the other 28 teams do.

    • zumiee said, on June 21, 2017 at 8:02 am

The Dodgers beat up on bad pitching. We’ll see if they choke in the playoffs yet again.

  5. zumiee said, on June 21, 2017 at 7:58 am

Yeah, Maddons’ “I loved it. I loved it.” really ticked me off. The Padres catcher left Rizzo a big lane and still got blown up. The rule exists to stop that from happening. MLB says Rizzo would have been ruled out anyway by the ump, but how about at least a 1 game suspension? The Padres catcher could have been seriously injured.
The rule has kept major injuries from happening.
A runner can still run into the catcher if there’s no lane. But Rizzo had a lane. He went out of the lane just to try to dislodge the ball, and drove his knees into the catcher’s chest.

I enjoy the fact that at least the Cubs or Dodgers are going to end this season feeling crappy.

  6. willedav said, on June 21, 2017 at 8:16 am

The highly touted Swanson kid at SS made his 12th error of season yesterday dropping a throw on potential DP that screwed up the inning for Braves. Everyone was safe and right after that Slater blasted 3 run bomb and Braves fell apart.

The kid had a nice start as late call up last year, but 2017 he’s batting .224 with .640 OPS and leads team in Ks with 64 in 250 ABs. Game just isn’t that easy as it seems at minor league levels.

  7. djloo27 said, on June 21, 2017 at 8:33 am

Probable Giants opening day lineup 2018:

    Span
    Panik
    Belt
    Posey
    Crawford
    Pence
    Slater
    Arroyo
Bum (Followed by Cueto, Moore, Smardj & Blach) (Closer: Melancon)

    • chipower9 said, on June 21, 2017 at 8:37 am

Probably not far from reality, Loo. I do think one way or another that Cueto will be gone (either traded or he will opt out). My real question is what the bullpen will look like next year…

  8. unca_chuck said, on June 21, 2017 at 8:42 am

Cueto’s gone. He is NOT sticking around after this season. He wants back to the AL. I think Smarj has enough left to be traded as well. Whether the blue-footed booby has the huevos to make the deals remains to be seen. I can’t see how they hold on to this pricey talent and sink to the absolute bottom of the league. they need to blow it up a la Boston a few years ago.

    • chipower9 said, on June 21, 2017 at 9:05 am

I am still not convinced that the team needs a total blow-up. I like the IF (with Arroyo at 3rd next year). Add one of Houston’s talented young OFers in a trade for Johnny Dreadlocks, and then retool the bullpen, and I still think this team could compete for a few more years. OF and pen are the areas that must be retooled, IMO.

      • alleykat69 said, on June 21, 2017 at 10:25 am

And like you say Chi… “If my aunt had balls she would be my uncle”
Stros aren’t about to give up any of their talent for are retreads..

  9. djloo27 said, on June 21, 2017 at 8:54 am

If Cueto’s not dealt at the deadline and winds up 7-15/4.50, think he still opts out?

    • chipower9 said, on June 21, 2017 at 9:03 am

I do, as everything I have read is that he wants to go back to and finish his career in the AL. I still like a prospective deal of Cueto for one of Houston’s many young OFers. Just makes sense. Houston need starters desperately, and the Giants need an OFer…

    • wilcojoe said, on June 21, 2017 at 9:05 am

To get away from all his cracker teammates, you bet.

Sidenote: I like the way cracker sounds when I say it in my head. It’s impossible not to hear Chris Rock’s voice when you say it in your head.

  10. djloo27 said, on June 21, 2017 at 8:58 am

Just for fun, current combined W-L of Bum, Smdj, Cain & Moore: 8-25

  11. unca_chuck said, on June 21, 2017 at 9:47 am

What’s amazing is none of our starters has a winning record. They were supposed to be a lot better than this.

As far as Slayer goes, I was always partial to Pantera myself. Although Reign in Blood is pretty damn good.

    • djloo27 said, on June 21, 2017 at 10:55 am

      Pantera was the best, Chuck.
      Poor Dimebag…

  12. chipower9 said, on June 21, 2017 at 10:11 am

Charlie – while the starters certainly are not setting the world on fire, I do not think you can pin all of their shitty W-L record on them. Pitchers need run support, too. And our team SUCKS in almost every major offensive category:

    Avg – T26
    OBP – 28
    SLG – 30
    OPS – 30
    R – 28

So the lack of offense definitely plays into their W-L record, IMO.

But, there is certainly room for improvement by the starters, too, especially for Moore and Cain (ERA/WHIP):

    Bum – 3.00/1.07
    Blach – 4.23/1.23
    Cueto – 4.42/1.3
    Smardj – 4.81/1.18
    Cain – 4.99/1.69
    Moore – 5.82/1.58

  13. alleykat69 said, on June 21, 2017 at 10:38 am

    Agree Chi.
Room for the Starters to improve and of course the shit sandwiches the BP smell of.
And then the offense?? Offense what freaking offense. The theory still holds true you score zero runs you lose are play 20 inning games tied at zero and start it up again the next day like Groundhog Day…

  14. alleykat69 said, on June 21, 2017 at 11:42 am

Shark is tied with Rick Porcello for the dubious title of most losses at 9 should be a interesting race..

  15. unca_chuck said, on June 21, 2017 at 12:46 pm

Smarj, like Moore, is a conundrum. He’s hot and cold, unhittable, then BP. None of our current starters has an ERA under 4. Which is awful no matter how you cut it. Porcello’s whip (1.53) is much worse than Smarj’s, but the era’s are similar.

That being said we fall victim to the 8-6 loss all the time, then a few 3 zips to spice things up.

  16. unca_chuck said, on June 21, 2017 at 12:50 pm

I mean, all the pitchers have been bit by the ‘no-run-support’ bug, but they’ve also been shelled mercilessly.

    • chipower9 said, on June 21, 2017 at 1:50 pm

All I was pointing out is that you cannot hang it all on the starters. Lack of run support has played-into the shitty W-L records for the starters to some degree.

  17. chipower9 said, on June 21, 2017 at 1:50 pm

    1. Denard Span (L) CF
    2. Kelby Tomlinson (R) 2B
    3. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
    4. Buster Posey (R) C
    5. Hunter Pence (R) RF
    6. Austin Slater (R) LF
    7. Brandon Belt (L) 1B
    8. Aaron Hill (R) 3B
    9. Jeff Samardzija (R) P

Is it too much to ask for a 2-game win streak???

    • djloo27 said, on June 21, 2017 at 2:10 pm

I don’t remember Crawford ever hitting third before.
      Who cares…

  18. snarkk said, on June 21, 2017 at 3:06 pm

At least 8 losses aren’t the starters’ fault; that’s the number of shutouts suffered by Gs…

  19. Irish Kevin said, on June 21, 2017 at 3:28 pm

I see it is SOS different day, the good thing is the Giants are bring up players to see if they are MLB material, I think this is beacause of the way Parker and Williamson have perform. They are realizing they need to know sooner rather than later whether a minor league player is going to pan out. I am a believer in doing this find out early on what a minor leaguer needs to work on.

  20. Flavor said, on June 21, 2017 at 5:07 pm

Haven’t heard a peep about the new stadium although I didn’t have the Giant telecast till tonight.
If I didn’t know it was a new stadium, I don’t think I would have noticed the change from the old/new one…

    • Flavor said, on June 21, 2017 at 6:41 pm

who builds a new stadium 20 years after the last one? How did they sucker the tax payers into that one?

      • snarkk said, on June 21, 2017 at 7:44 pm

A team that wants the stadium moved from an economically challenged area with a surrounding population consisting largely of a certain disfavored skin color to a far more affluent area where the team can build and own a mixed use development as part of the ballpark to make even more money indirectly off the baseball operation…

      • djloo27 said, on June 21, 2017 at 7:51 pm

The Yankees didn’t – maybe it’s harder to do in NY. The Mets also stayed put in Flushing (a.k.a. Flu-Shing) where there is absolutely nothing but chop shops around the ballpark…

Great on Smardj stats the walks to K’s ratio, but in the long run his tendencys for the gopher ball blow those stats up for him,and now he has the chance to take over the league lead with 10 losses over Porcello..
Bets can still be placed on the Flap table on who ends up with the most losses..

Why does he even have to budge and make it easy for the defense?
Who’s to say he’s even aware that the ball got away?
What is his obligation (if any) by rule?
