Nearing The Wrong Side of 50/50

Bochy’s only 10 games over .500 in his career right now (probably as of yesterday, given BBR’s lag time). He should hang it up now.

….I didn’t know this. Wow. When you talk about your legacy in the game this absolutely comes into play. And there really isn’t anywhere for Bochy to go other than to trudge onward. What’s he gonna do, tuck and roll out of this season before he dips under .500? And he can’t possibly think the Giants are going to play over .500 ball between now and the next season or two, can he?

Who knows, maybe he doesn’t care.

But I bet he does…..

Well, I really think in the case of most teams, mgr. and coaches of a team in this kind of slide would be long gone. It’s certainly happened before in Giants history. They find a way to lose whether they hit or SPs pitch well. Pen guys have been routinely awful, all of them. Just a bad mix.
Reminds me of watching Braves on Superstation/Skip Caray in ’80s. One of those teams lost 106 and might have been managed by Bobby Cox too.

Smoltz seemed vey sympathetic to Bochy’s plight and surprised at way Giants are going given vets in LU and guys with rings.

I don’t know how much his lifetime W-L record matters to Bochy. I think the 3 titles are legacy enough. I remember Mantle feeling bad that his lifetime BA slipped under .300 at the end, but I don’t think it tarnished people’s memories of him…

There are now 27 members of the 500 homer club.

Bochy and his Fellowship of the Rings are immortal in SF lore. He also managed this team last year to the best record in baseball at the break. I’m trying to remember when his health issues came up, wasn’t it pretty much at the break? Which is exactly when the team started its current downward spiral. Something was going on at that time with his health, and perhaps something else in the clubhouse. And apparently, it hasn’t been resolved for a year now, just based on team performance. Who knows how unhealthy Bochy is, but if it’s real, he should get it taken care of, starting at the break, there’s absolutely nothing else for him to prove soldiering on with this lot. Some of us here spoke of this last year, thinking maybe it was time…. and as Xoot implied in the last thread, this rather downward year can’t be helping much…

    • willedav said, on June 25, 2017 at 8:52 am

when he needed a little break earlier this year, he came back at those who asked about his health. He said he was fine and fired up to get back to winning yada yada. Gotta wonder if he feels the same now.

In other news, Gomer walked 4 guys gave up 2 runs in blown save L 2/3 of an inning for Sac, Yeow.
Oh, and according to minor lines site page, Chris Shaw is a LH.

    • gianthead said, on June 25, 2017 at 11:06 am

Exactly right Paul on your memory

    • snarkk said, on June 25, 2017 at 11:24 am

If Shaw is a LHB, then he’s Belt’s replacement. But, if he can play the OF and has pop, play him there until more OFers show up in the minors. Anybody with pop that can catch an OF fly ball should be in the mix for OF on this team…

I bet Bochy cares but I also think he’ll push on anyway.

Like Loo I’m older then dirt (lol) and back in black and white only TV 📺( just kidding) but it was bitching the standard set of 500 HR’s and who had him.Yeah you throw out that Ruth fella cause I’m not even that old to remember him ,so I go with the ones I did watch and admire chasing 500 big ones..
That would be Willie Mays,Hank Aaron,Mickey Mantle,Frank Robinson,Willie McCovey,Harmon Killebrew I know I’m missing a few, mostly doing their damage in the 70’s but really it was a exciting time with numerous deserving hall of famers from every team.
500 was the milestone sadly it means nothing anymore with Steroid cheaters..

    • djloo27 said, on June 25, 2017 at 10:10 am

Well said, Kat. I was ecstatic that Mays beat Mantle to 500.
At the end of the ’64 season Mantle led Mays 454 to 453…

the marketing angles from the 70’s were hilarious.

I would wear those now if I could. I don’t about today, but me and my friends were all amateur arsonists – especially in the weeks leading up to July 4th. We would try burn or blow up almost anything…

Bochy is +9 after yeaterday: 1816-1807. With Giants he’s 865-832, with Pads he’s 851-975, so he’s done well to even get over .500 off the SD record. It would be nice to keep him north of .500, maybe this is something the team can rally around ’cause there sure ain’t much else.

Bochy locker room speech delivered sometime between now and All-Star break:

“Last year we had the best record before the break. We’re gonna flip it this year, men. We’re gonna have the best record AFTER the break, men. And that’s what you are. Men. Let’s show some pride. You can’t win 50 games in one night. Let’s lace ’em up. No hanging your heads. Pride. Men. One game at a time. Now let’s go.”

[played by William Bendix in the movie version]

Yeah besides Flipping the post game spread only worked when Panda played for us.Nothing would tick off Panda more then not seeing the buffet spread upright…

the top 12 managers in wins include two with sub-.500 records–Connie Mack, who made the HOF of course, and Gene Mauch, who has not. Leyland’s pretty close to .500. Wilbert Robinson (no. 30), manager of the Brooklyn team known variously as the Bridegrooms, the Robins and the dodgers ended one game over .500. Bochy’s currently no. 15. That rank combined with the three in five should be enough to enshrine him. You’d think that honor would soothe any sub-.500 sting. Still–the team the FO gave him to lead this season must really piss him off .

  14. willedav said, on June 25, 2017 at 1:04 pm

    fun fact:
Span and Panik have exact same BA .275 and OPS .749.
Panik has the higher OB by 15 points, Span higher slugging.

  15. zumiee said, on June 25, 2017 at 1:06 pm

The team is so anemic, Bochy won’t flip the post-game spread, because he feels that the team needs every meal.

  16. willedav said, on June 25, 2017 at 1:31 pm

    not so fun fact:
Pence OPS is .657 Craw 10 points higher. ouch

  17. willedav said, on June 25, 2017 at 1:32 pm

Loo mentioned Duda, who has bunch of bombs and .900 OPS. If you were Yanks, who would you want/give up more for, him or Belt?

He’s fallen off physically for sure. But, I think this marriage thing has really messed up his head and game…

  20. Macdog said, on June 25, 2017 at 2:13 pm

How about Pence to the bench?

  21. snarkk said, on June 25, 2017 at 2:29 pm

This team is bad because it’s not only playing badly in a physical way, but doing stoopid stuff like Pence did.
Maybe the beat scribes will find out what happened with him, maybe they won’t even ask. Like zum says, at this point, maybe it does not matter…

  22. snarkk said, on June 25, 2017 at 2:33 pm

I’m near declaring this the worst Giants team in my lifetime as a fan. Lot all of us “more experienced” Flappers here, I’ve been through the bad times in the 70s, the crap 80s including that ’85 debacle year, up and down 90s, and the 2005-2009 black hole period.

This looks like the worst, because the talent level is generally better than those earlier teams with bad ownership, bad management, and dismally low talent for years like Johnny LeMaster.

This team is flat embarrassingly bad. Like there must be something wrong going on in that clubhouse that’s infecting the whole situation. The Pen seems explainable, that talent is just young and not good. The OF is atrocious both at bat and with glove (Span apparently just misplayed another one). But, the entire team unable to hit (sure, except Posey), and doing stoopid baserunning often — seems inexplicable for such a long period across 2 seasons. I can’t help but think this team is sleepwalking and has tuned out management, no matter protestations to the contrary by those who have interest in fans believing there is no such problem…

  23. zumiee said, on June 25, 2017 at 2:39 pm

    Bellinger, 23rd HR.
If the Dodgers can’t win the World Series with this group, then that’ll be pretty amusing.

  24. Flavor said, on June 25, 2017 at 2:48 pm

I’m most disappointed in Moore. There is no reason he should be this bad unless he’s hurt or he’s a headcase.

  25. zumiee said, on June 25, 2017 at 2:50 pm

Slater takes a called second strike and takes a walk five feet outside the batter’s box. I thought MLB was going to be cracking down on that type of thing. Apparently not.

  26. Flavor said, on June 25, 2017 at 2:50 pm

Snarkk, another thing to consider: all of the *core* guys all have contracts now. Human nature to take the gas off the pedal a bit? I’m not saying they aren’t trying, but maybe it’s harder to gear up for greatness when you’ve got 3 rings in the bank + 100+ million (and millions more on the way)

    • snarkk said, on June 25, 2017 at 2:55 pm

Yep, I’m not discounting that at all.
Even the Giants announcers are coasting now, taking lots of time off (Kruk’s problems excepted) and messing up a lot more often.
So, the Dubs “core” guys are all the more impressive.
They are making as much or much more coin (way more in endorsements) that the Giants core, and they just kicked ass for three straight seasons, in a far more physically demanding sport…

  27. zumiee said, on June 25, 2017 at 2:59 pm

The 2017 season has been a horror show, but more like Whatever Happened To Baby Jane? The Giants, helpless, being tormented, as the Dodgers run amuck in the division.

    • Flavor said, on June 25, 2017 at 3:05 pm

I don’t mind the Dodgers winning. A great personal, seasonal joy is watching them fuck up in the post season. So until that stops happening I will continue to look forward to it. Can’t fuck up in the post season if you don’t make it so……

Osich and Okert, the Torch Bros….

    Let’s get real.
A pathetic sweep at home where the games weren’t close, by the Mets — who just got mauled in LA.
Virtually any other organization going through a historical disaster like this over two seasons of time, would have fired somebody of consequence, by now. Would it do any good? Who knows, but it would show the fans that ownership is paying attention to something other than the days’ receipts…

  38. zumiee said, on June 25, 2017 at 5:14 pm

The Dodgers demolished the Rockies all weekend. The Rockies will be looking to get well vs. the Giants, as all teams do this season.

He’s a Dodger, but it’s a great story. He and Judge are good for baseball.

2 run triple off Leake followed by sac fly, Cards down 3-2. Apologies to Daniel, hope Pirates pound this guy.

Giants getting awfully hard to watch. Moore the nibbler gives up run without a hit with a walk and wild pitch then the hits just keep on coming, no relief from pen either. Posey could have kept them in it, but has ground out/sac fly with bases loaded.

And that BART deal, lol. StubHub will trump that one big time. Column in Chron Saturday about gal paying $40 for box seats she paid $140 for last year.

Other than Cueto and Samrdz lately the other SPs are disappointing too. Moore used to be halfway decent at least at home, wtf is wrong with this guy?

  50. dirtnrocksnomo said, on June 25, 2017 at 9:18 pm

Headed to the yard with my brother today. He’s not much of a baseball fan and pretty much just powers down the hippy lettuce all day long so he makes good company for a lost season like this. Walking in from the lot was like a death march with none of the fans excited about the game. The talk was all about the Summer of Love promotion. That was a little before my time and I could give a rats ass about a tie dyed blanket, or t-shirt, or pretty much anything. Lava lamps aren’t so bad, I guess. With a cap on blankets for the first 5000 people at the gate, there were a lot of disappointed ex hippies.

Moore was predictable with his pathetic start and the rest of the club looked lifeless. For all the flack that Belt gets for his body language, I noticed that Posey wasn’t exactly carrying himself with head held high. It got so bad that a dude 10 seats to my right had either a seizure or a heart attack and had to be evacuated from his seat by 6 of SFPDs finest. I’m reasonably sure that he pulled through but man, there has been some weird shit going down in my seat section this year. I’m not one to joke about life or death situations but when the guy next to me mentioned that he had probably been watching too much Giants baseball I have to admit that I chuckled a bit.

I’m pretty sure there was a baseball game taking place over the next two hours but only one team seemed to be participating. This was one of the most depressing days I have ever spent at a game. I didn’t even get a cha-cha bowl.
