The Long Game

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 16, 2017

When you suck, the season is looooooong. I just realized we have two and a half more months of this shit.

The two worst run differential teams in the league square off again today. We throw yet another stud pitcher at them, let’s see if we can close the gap to 4 games in the only race left that matters for us. If we can’t close the gap, can we keep it at single digits? I have accepted that at 28 games behind the LA we are probably not winning the west this year. But it would be really embarrassing to finish 10+ games behind the Padres. Right?

So we need a win today bad or else we’re closer to 10 back than 0 back. We need little mind games like this to get us through the next two and a half months…..

Only stat that I think that this team will care about is keeping Bochy above .500….still 10 games over…another blown game last night hurts that legacy…

  2. gianthead said, on July 16, 2017 at 7:43 am

I’ve not commented before regarding the SI story from a few weeks ago about the jump in home run numbers…no doubt MLB has messed around with the baseball once again to manipulate offense. Cueto’s blister comments I think are the nail in the coffin about this manipualtion…

    • Flavor said, on July 16, 2017 at 7:54 am

and do you think mlb gives a shit about Cueto’s fingers? They will keep juicing the balls because everyone digs the long ball

    • snarkk said, on July 16, 2017 at 1:17 pm

      It’s all fake news, right?…

  3. blade3colorado said, on July 16, 2017 at 7:48 am

This is probably bogus, even mind boggling . . . Per Bleacher Report, Giants supposedly contacted the Marlins about Stanton. Hmm . . .

    • Flavor said, on July 16, 2017 at 7:53 am

not a new report. Lots of arguing between the radio guys out here about this: who to give up? Lurie says it will be a lot, Krueger says not so much because Marlins are just trying to ditch salary.

  4. unca_chuck said, on July 16, 2017 at 7:54 am

Bochy’s legacy is golden regardless of his coaching record. Being above or below .500 is not determining his status as a HOF coach.

  5. Flavor said, on July 16, 2017 at 8:11 am

but here’s why Krueger is wrong about Stanton and what it will cost: too many teams want this guy. It doesn’t matter what his salary is if there’s competition for him and there will be.

  6. dirtnrocksnomo said, on July 16, 2017 at 8:12 am

Picking up Stanton would be awesome. Can the Marlin’s include their scouting department in the deal?

  7. blade3colorado said, on July 16, 2017 at 8:15 am

Buy a lot of Saran wrap for James if Stanton comes to Giants. He’ll cream for G’s career OPS of .899 and OBP of .357.

  8. Flavor said, on July 16, 2017 at 8:36 am

The Stanton-stuff is just for the talk shows. I can’t envision a scenario where he lands in SF. He’ll cost too much, regardless of what he’s still owed.

    • djloo27 said, on July 16, 2017 at 10:40 am

Completely agree. Not a chance he comes to SF – although I wonder how his contract compares to the
one Bonds first signed with the Giants in terms of relative value and what other players were making at that time.

As far as the season being long, don’t worry about it. After July 4th, the summer just flies by. You blink and it’s Labor Day. When I was a kid I would start dreading the next school year in late July. Now it’s the years that are zipping by. It’s almost fuckin’ Thanksgiving again…

  9. willedav said, on July 16, 2017 at 8:39 am

Marlins have a good hitting team but pitching/pen suck. It would take a lot I agree, both prospects and ml ready to get the guy but what a draw. He’s one of those guys I’d pay to watch hit, even BP.

Baer and his marketing munchkins would go ape shit. He’d sell seats on the Coke Bottle with a massive giveaway if Stanton put one out there.

  10. blade3colorado said, on July 16, 2017 at 8:39 am

This is the most recent on Stanton (everything references back to this dude Mish) . . .

Craig Mish of Fantasy Sports Radio on SiriusXM reports that teams are calling the Marlins asking about Giancarlo Stanton and the Giants are “showing the most interest.”
Mish adds that the Cardinals have also “checked in” with Miami on Stanton, and he’s hearing that Stanton may be willing to waive his no-trade clause to go to a contender. Jon Morosi of MLB Network hears that St. Louis has expressed interest in Christian Yelich and Marcell Ozuna in addition to Stanton, but “there’s no sign yet” that Miami will trade any of their starting outfielders. The Giants obviously aren’t contenders this season, but they’d have Stanton at minimum through the 2020 campaign, after which he has the option to opt out of the contract. The Cards are a couple games under .500 but are within striking distance in the National League Central. Any potential Stanton trade would obviously be very complicated with all the money involved, and it’s probably likelier that he’s dealt over the offseason rather than before the deadline.

  14. theroooster said, on July 16, 2017 at 11:31 am

    From today’s Times:
“Read all about it: ESPN and Fox have committed a total of $10 billion in rights fees to broadcast MLB games on the eight-year contracts currently in force. The networks clearly want to do anything in their power to persuade more fans to watch the games — the greater the number of viewers, the more the networks make on advertising. So it has be troubling to the league that ESPN and Fox have told three of baseball’s best reporters — Buster Olney, Ken Rosenthal and Jayson Stark — to write less, or not at all. If the networks truly believe they cannot boost their audience with great writing about baseball, the sport’s demographic future might be perilous indeed.”

Kinda weird – and I don’t buy the “millenials don’t read” argument. So, you give them LESS of an opportunity to read about baseball. Makes zero sense.

  15. mrsprtdude said, on July 16, 2017 at 12:02 pm

Back from a nice trip to paradise (Kauai). Don’t know which floored me more…Giants 28 games out, or that Gorkys (.242) now has a higher ave than Craw (.227), and catching up up Belt (.244) and Pence (.247).
Gorkys is a scrub forever, but is there a better way to show why we have been SO much worse than we thought we would be at scoring runs than our 3rd,5th, 6th hitters coming in to the season being this awful??

  16. Flavor said, on July 16, 2017 at 1:09 pm

Matt Williams is the most boring color guy since JT Snow.

  17. snarkk said, on July 16, 2017 at 1:14 pm

Giants need an entirely new OF, not just one guy, Stanton. If they grabbed him, he’d get walked all the time, with the rest of this POS hitting team around him. Gee, I think I’ve seen that before. Spend the $280 million (or whatever the pro rata is until he blows town in 2020) on an entire outfield, on a better scouting staff, on the farm system. The only reason Stanton would be brought in now is his PR value, keep butts in the seats through the bad times, not what he would do for the team…

    • Flavor said, on July 16, 2017 at 1:20 pm

it’s all nonsense. There is no way this ever happens. It’s just something to float around on the internet and waste time with.

      • snarkk said, on July 16, 2017 at 1:33 pm

Stanton has a no trade clause anyway. Why would he waive it to come to this sad sack outpost that’s cold and windy at night? Bobbly Evans maybe will trade one or two of the Pen guys for some 9th ranked system farmhand infielder or catcher…

  18. snarkk said, on July 16, 2017 at 1:39 pm

That Shaw kid is raking pretty well at Sac, and playing LF. What are they waiting for?…

    • willedav said, on July 16, 2017 at 1:47 pm

Yeah because right now they have surplus of IF, esp 3b. what I read is they don’t want to play Nunez out there yet tho I guess either he or Specs would be back ups.
Only drawback to Shaw is LH, something imo Giants LU already has too many of.
bigger need is a CF…Evans seems fine with Span and Gorkys, unacceptable.

      • snarkk said, on July 16, 2017 at 1:54 pm

He’s nearing 1000 ABs in the minors, over 300 now at AAA with .880 OPS. That’s not otherworldly in the PCL, but the Giants are crap, I see no reason to not get this guy going now instead of a September call up. He’s 1.5 years older than Bellinger. They should have thought about him being LHB when they drafted him. My cardinal rule for drafting for ATT is draft RHB power, LHB speed. It’s so obvious, that’s why they don’t do it…

    • Flavor said, on July 16, 2017 at 1:53 pm

another reason why they are going to lose in the post season. Book it. Aside from the Cubs coasting through last season and winning it all, rarely is it the team that deals with no pressure all Summer only to blow through everyone in the post season.

    Whatever it is, it’s bogus.
The 3 in 5 capital earned, IMO, allows you to blow this thing up, it’s not like you’ve been a POS for a decade, and another rebuild will suck the life from the fans. You’ve earned a season or two to regroup, because your front office has fallen asleep at the wheel…

    • alleykat69 said, on July 16, 2017 at 2:45 pm

  32. snarkk said, on July 16, 2017 at 3:02 pm

Dudes I’ve never heard of are homering and stealing and shutting out the Giants regularly; our ex-second string catcher is pounding our pitching like nobody’s business. This is getting really hard to take, especially since it’s been going on now for a full season+. Nobody should be safe from trades, nobody.

This is full off the ledge time, let the klaxon sound. The worst team in my entire Giants fandom, and that is 45+ years. I don’t mean the worst talent, either. The worst TEAM. Something is rotten with this outfit. I don’t know what it is. Kruk and Kuip and Bochy can say these guys are trying ’til the cows come home. Kruk can blame it on the ballpark messing with the team psyche. Injuries? They sucked last season and the first part of this season when the injury count was low. Bum pitched well, pre-injury, and was 0-4. I’m not buying any of the excuses, especially after Friday night’s first few innings of total sleepwalking. Bring AAA and AA players up that even look remotely like they can play.

This TEAM stinks on ice, an embarrassment for a franchise with a stratospheric payroll. It’s fire sale time, baby…

  33. snarkk said, on July 16, 2017 at 3:22 pm

If you look at the long replay on MLB of that Spangenberg HR off Samardzxxxx, you’ll see Hundley did not put the target out of the zone. NO, he put the target at belt high on the outer half of the plate. At 0-2. That’s exactly where Samardzxxxx threw it. A gopher meatball targeted and thrown on purpose at 0-2. And, it got clobbered. That’s just ridiculous…

Losing to the Pads is really annoying, definitely a low point. As flav pointed out, they are terrible hitting club–last in NL for BA at .228 and last in runs scored at 321, 40 less than Giants. Yet they rake today and rough up smardz and continue to knock ball out of the yard, while Giants flail away.

wow OSF, long time…as to your question, don’t ask Evans cuz he’s clueless.

  47. snarkk said, on July 16, 2017 at 5:51 pm

Gorkys, Span, Pence actually went 0,3,1 = 4 for 11 today. Right now I would gladly take any other outfield in MLB in place of this one. Giants cannot field this crap next season. Yeah, the last two have one year left on their deals. Getting rid of those including eating some of the $ if needed, is why the front office makes their money. I think Flav might have said something about this, but it’s weird so few buyers in NL with so many teams struggling around .500. AZ has lost 8 of 10 Rox 14 of 20. Both still WC leaders but inevitable decline I guess.

And gotta wonder who exactly would be buying what Giants have to begin with.

I love the Red Sox OF defense. Betts routinely ranges long way to make grabs too.
