When Baseball Doesn’t Matter Anymore

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 17, 2017

Cleveland tonight. Or whoever. It doesn’t really matter. After throwing our 3 best pitchers at San Diego and losing 2 out of 3, now we get into the real meat of the honky end of this rotation: Moore, Blach and Cain. So I think we know where this series is going.

And the worst part is that nobody cares. Did it look like any of those guys gave a shit yesterday? Its become so repetitive, so predictable….they get paid the same no matter what. And the fans tonight are going to be gleefully glued to their phone screens. Seriously, why go to these games if all you’re going to do is fiddle with your phone? And god forbid they boo any of these guys. That would just be mean.

Twin responded to my email. I’m not going to repost it since I didn’t ask his permission. In summary, he isn’t watching much baseball these days, has other things going on (though it didn’t sound like it had to do with his health) and that he wishes all you guys the best.

So that’s what this season has come to. We can’t even get Twin to come back and set us straight with his honest take. He doesn’t have one to give.

don’t get me started on the phone addicted (and no I still don’t own one). I see it all the time at work—people walking through intersections with their heads down, 2 walking next to each other on a busy street and tapping away, or the ones I’d like to give an icepick to that are holding 10 minute conversation loud enough for everyone to hear on a phone while “shopping.”

Hope TF is doing well. Not surprising he has better things to pay attention to than 2017 Giants.

    • Flavor said, on July 17, 2017 at 8:32 am

not having a phone still is about as old school as you can get, Willedav. When was the last time you used a payphone? What do they cost now?

      • willedav said, on July 17, 2017 at 8:39 am

btw landline and work, it’s OK. No idea what everyone talks about or is punching in all the time. At a lunch with friend and her son months ago, at one point both of them were on phone while we waited for our order.

Tribe btw, are a cool team to watch, young team with latin guys that can hit and run plus Encarnacion. Always liked Francona too. I will never forgive Evans for balking when Yanks, dangling Miller, asked about panik.

    I have visited approximately 40
Countries and only 1 was not overrun with smartphone zombies . . . Ecuador. People actually went to the public squares, parks, and restaurants, chatting with the person(s) they were with.

However, that was in 2012. Who knows what’s going on there now? Like the Zika virus spreading to Florida from South America, the smartphone virus is probably in Ecuador now.

    ‘Nite all.

I had season tix the first three years at Pac Bell, OF section 138. Hard core fans there at the time. If you whipped out your phone while the game was on (not between innings) you were belted mercilessly with “OFF THE PHONE – OFF THE PHONE!”

I will still be taking in a game sometime later this year (part of my birthday present from my daughter). And even during a dismal season like this, I still love going to the yard and catching a game.

You know…a shitty day at the ballpark beats a really good day at work. I still, and always will, love being at the ballpark.

And still, we REALLY REALLY SUCK this year. Even more than the hapless Friars.

I am still looking forward to the trade deadline to see if Booby and Crew have the brains or balls to pull of a trade that will start moving the needle in the right direction. Not holding my breath on that one…

Has anyone ever given up more HRs than walks as Samarj is doing?

    • Flavor said, on July 17, 2017 at 8:57 am

yeah, it’s kinda dulling the shine on his impressive K/BB rate.

    • djloo27 said, on July 17, 2017 at 11:03 am

I found one for you, Chuck…

      Robin Roberts 1956 (46 HR/40 BB)

  5. unca_chuck said, on July 17, 2017 at 9:02 am

Chuck, I used my cousin’s tickets (his name was Chuck as well) a lot (Sec 210 – club lev) the first few years at Pac Bell, and it was awful. Guys in suits on their laptops doing work, chatting on the phone, and basically doing everything but watch the game. I hoped one of these clowns would get a foul ball right through the screen.

I’d throw out snide comments all night and get looks, but these folks for the most part couldn’t be bothered. Maybe it was a club level thing but it was rampant the first 5 years in that area.

Crazier to me was the fact that one of these day games I went to there was some soccer tourney and the club level bars were packed with people watching soccer.

    • chipower9 said, on July 17, 2017 at 12:18 pm

Charlie – these days I sit in the club level often, and like it up there, but have seen my share of those idiots. Question to them is why the fuck didn’t you just keep your sorry as at the office!? I really dig lower box like 128-129 (near the Giants bullpen) but for a day game, those seats can be brutally hot.

it is bothersome to be at the game and near folks who are playing grab-ass all day and doing EVERYTHING except watch the game. SMH…

  6. snarkk said, on July 17, 2017 at 9:16 am

Giants are turning into the old Cubs.
Going to games was for the park and the atmosphere, the game was secondary. I warned against this years ago before they won the 3 in 5. The place is such a money machine, ownership and management don’t go out of their way to win. The money train makes management more than hesitant in taking risks on trades and getting rid of familiar players…

  7. djloo27 said, on July 17, 2017 at 9:26 am

How long will it take them to replay the 1954 Mays WS catch tonight?
I’ll go with once in the pre-game and another one around the 3rd inning…

  8. dirtnrocksnomo said, on July 17, 2017 at 9:33 am

Miller had a line on the radio that went something like “as this season goes on the longer it seems until the end.” Belt’s probably got some incurable wrist injury now too.

    • snarkk said, on July 17, 2017 at 10:17 am

If the guy would use the right grip, he wouldn’t have had the injury…

  9. djloo27 said, on July 17, 2017 at 9:34 am

Joe Carter actually put up very respectable numbers for the Giants after they acquired him for stretch drive in 1998. I didn’t remember it that way…

  10. unca_chuck said, on July 17, 2017 at 9:39 am

Damn. I vaguely remember Carter. For some reason I loved getting Reggie Smith. His way of kneeing folks in the back on pick-off throws to first used to crack me up to no end.

  11. snarkk said, on July 17, 2017 at 10:14 am

I may be in minority, but having Cleveland come in is a good thing. I’d like to see them. They’ll probably kick the Giants ass like everybody else, but at least it’ll be by different cleats. The Pads come in later this week for even more of them, ugh…

  12. Flavor said, on July 17, 2017 at 10:28 am

we haven’t won a series vs the Padres since May of 2016. Think about that.

When does the Panda get here?

    • chipower9 said, on July 17, 2017 at 12:31 pm

Hopefully never, but if the Giants decide to go that way, it will probably be after the 24th (the day by which the Red Sox must either trade or release him).

  14. alleykat69 said, on July 17, 2017 at 11:00 am

Wasn’t the batter Vic Wertz that clobbered the ball a good 450 plus and Mays still had room at the warning track after that terrific catch to spin and throw it back in to hold the runners?
That dead center wall must of been 480 to clear it back then..

  15. alleykat69 said, on July 17, 2017 at 11:03 am

Oh yeah best wishes to Oracle, I could easily see why you would stop watching this act..

  16. unca_chuck said, on July 17, 2017 at 12:47 pm

Snarkk, I don’t think it is quite that bad yet. Locking down their good young players a couple years ago was seen as an excellent idea.

Now? Well, not so much. It’s very hard to look into the future to see who falls off the table before their contracts expire. I mean, they tried to get away with a patchwork OF and a makeshift pen. We all know that. It failed spectacularly. But this is on Pence, Bummie, Crawfish, Samarj and Moore as much it is on the known problems we had.

  17. unca_chuck said, on July 17, 2017 at 12:48 pm

Mike, if you are looking in from time to time, say hey . . .

Nooooo! George Romero has passed away at 77.

“They’re coming to get you, Barbara!”

Best movie ever. Remember seeing this uncut on Creature Features with the inimitable Bob Wilkins around 1970.

It seems ironic to me, but before I left this blog (~2010) I was ragging on Sabean about no 3rd base. Now there is no one for 3rd, LF, CF, and complete pitching staff. It will take years if not a decade (or two) to get out of this mess. TF would be better watching the Twins this year.

    • djloo27 said, on July 17, 2017 at 2:26 pm

Sandoval was 25/90/.330 with 44 doubles in 2009…

      • chipower9 said, on July 17, 2017 at 2:50 pm

And 2011 was the only other year he hit over .300 (.315). In 2015 his line was:

.245, .292, .366, .658 with 10 HR and 45 RBI. And he has only gone downhill since.

He has played in only 161 games over the past three seasons.

That ship hasn’t sailed…that motherfucker has SUNK.

Current ownership no longer has the mortgage stroke excuse of $17 million a year heading out the door to the bankers off the top of the revenue line. Where is that going to go now — straight into ownership’s pocket, or invested in the organization and player inventory?…

    Pfffttt…

    SUCKAGE in OVERDRIVE…

This sorry-assed team DESERVES to lose 100. THEN maybe some fuckers who deserve to lose their job do lose their jobs. I would start with a hard look at the scouts…

    Pathetic…

      What about field management?…

I think it may be time for Bochy, too. May be time to clean-house…new blood…

I just know that we haven’t had shit in the pipeline in a looong time, and don’t you have to hang that on the scouts? I am sure that Booby and Sabes also have a look/say in regards to whatever is fed to them by the scouts.

come on. it’s only 1 loss.

    Kruk is amusing.
Another ugly loss, but hey, Moore looked better. Yay!…

There’s not a single bright spot on the entire team this season…

      Every time they DFA somebody?…

      • chipower9 said, on July 18, 2017 at 6:47 am

        lulz…

Looked again at the replay on that stoooopid underhand toss by Moore to first that cost a run.
This guy has to be some kind of head case. Who Fs that kind of EZ play up that badly? A head case. I think he and Strick lead the staff in Musclehead score…

Tomlin K’d Pence three times swinging, on the same damn pitch. Slider a foot outside in the dirt.
    Pence sucks.
But, he sure makes a damn good pot of french press coffee per wifey instructions…

It really is amazing how far and how fast he’s declined…

  77. djloo27 said, on July 17, 2017 at 10:45 pm

I can deal with a rotten season. There’s been plenty of them.
What makes this one so bad is that there doesn’t seem to be any help on the way in the system…

    129 comments: 1 positive comment; 1 smiley face; and 127 @#$&+?! comments.

Actually, I’m not certain – as I gave up after finding Flavor’s smiley face post and ironically, it was next to his positive post responding to Chi, i.e., “come on. it’s only 1 loss.”

Hey Blade – WTF, I thought my comment about a number of fuckers losing their jobs was positive… 😉

Moore really did pitch better, which is a definite positive. sure he screwed up royally on the comebacker, Giants gave away a couple runs, and then compost gave up the insurance run, but an improved Moore is good.
If for no other reason he can eat quality innings this year and help Giants figure out next year.

I know Kontos had a good stretch (and Kruk loves the guy) but my theory is these middle quality relievers only have so many good innings before they implode. And Kontos isn’t anything special or elite at all.
