Fortuna Spinneth Downward

The thing that struck me about the Belt beaning last night was how LOUD it was. Especially for a curve ball. But that thing was heat seeking and it just hit him about as square as you can get hit. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s done for the year. And the day after he tied his highest HR mark for a season. It’s unreal bad luck.

One way to look at this: if you’re into luck/bad luck/karma etc….maybe this is “payment due” for those 3 beauties we got from ’10-’14. And there has been SO MUCH bad luck, maybe we’re getting it all out of the way in a single season. Maybe.

Stratton today. LOL. STRATTON!!!!! He’s just not good. But when the season is lost you look at young guys, or at least most teams do. Personally, I think this has more to do with not embarrassing Cain anymore than it does with wanting to get an honest look at a younger player.

The Giants have had some pretty bad first round draft picks since Posey:

Gillaspie, Wheeler, Brown, Panik, Crick, STRATTON!!!!!, Arroyo, Beede, Bickford, Shaw. Well, maybe not *bad*. But there were some serious misses over the last several years. If Shaw, Beede and Arroyo work out it can’t be called *bad*. Let’s see if they ever turn into anything….

On Stix, the briefing shows that the sentencing hearing last month was a sort of small trial. Stix testified, as did several of his friends and family members. Among the government’s witnesses was the cop who bled from a minor scrape after the bullet broke the chopper’s plexiglass.

One of the big issues in the sentencing decision is whether Stix knew that the helicopter was a law enforcement aircraft. Among the government’s evidence were photographs showing the ID displayed on the chopper, including a registration number on the tail. The government also relied on a fairly long letter to Stix that incorporated the registration number into a small drawing. The author of the letter, Stix’s friend, had to testify that in Stix’s house he’d searched for and found the registration number, scrawled on an old envelope. It’s easy to imagine how other Stix correspondence to and from, and conversations with, people on the outside might have been used at a full trial. Maybe it’s best that Stix avoided that trial. I don’t know.

The feds are gunning for Stix. I do know that. They want to set an example. I hope to hell the judge has enough discretion under federal law to give Stix a break. And I hope he does. But hope doesn’t mean a thing in court.

    • snarkk said, on August 5, 2017 at 11:17 am

How can a letter be admitted into evidence with no objection-the support was the friends testimony? How do we know that envelope was not written or planted by somebody else? Why would a “friend” write that in a letter obviously subject to jailer review?…

      • Flavor said, on August 5, 2017 at 6:14 pm

these are fantastix questions. None of this is making much sense except that we are talking about someone who is probably dealing with a mental illness, probably not affiliated with the brightest bulbs on the planet, and everyone in his corner is probably pretty easily duped or used.

  2. alleykat69 said, on August 5, 2017 at 8:59 am

Stix scribbled the Choppers registration number down on a envelope in his house?
Not good at all, wonder if it was just from that 1st confrontation are he wrote it down from past flybys to be prepared for future altercations.Either way you don’t have that type of evidence just laying around in the open to make a easier case against you.. But still, “Free Stix”

  3. zumiee said, on August 5, 2017 at 9:24 am

It’s a double-whammy bad season because, in addition to the Giants’ dismal performance, the Dodgers are winning so many games.
Every break in the world is going for the Dodgers this season. Scrap-heap pick-ups and 5th round picks are playing like Hall of Famers.

I can’t decide which former manager has the more annoying spelling of their first name:
    Jimy Williams or Fredi Gonzalez.

    Sept/Oct .292 /.375/.491 .866 OPS

  8. alleykat69 said, on August 5, 2017 at 10:29 am

Belt does heat it up in Aug&Sept when he’s on the field, unfortunately he’s had a bad run of injuries in his career ( broken hand, 3 concussions 1 in college at Texas) just once I would of liked to see a FULL SEASON out of him, think 2016? only one, but some players are destined to be snake bit with injuries and Brandon seems to be one of them unfortunately..

  9. Flavor said, on August 5, 2017 at 10:29 am

I’m trying to envision why someone would scrawl a plane registration number down on an envelope. What am I missing here?

    • dirtnrocksnomo said, on August 5, 2017 at 10:34 am

So you know when to close the greenhouse roof or otherwise cover the plants.

      • Flavor said, on August 5, 2017 at 10:35 am

ah i see. I guess I didn’t consider how many planes are flying around his house. I would think there would be few if any but what I know about living in the stix?

  10. Flavor said, on August 5, 2017 at 10:36 am

Bummer about Belt but Loo you gotta be pretty stoked that Panda is returning, right?

  11. Flavor said, on August 5, 2017 at 10:38 am

Stix must have had a pretty big pot growing operation going on. I wonder if he was selling it to everyone in town? No way he was smoking all that ganja right? I’m not a pot smoker so I don’t know how much one man could smoke in a given day. We smoked a lot in college but that was a long time ago…..

  12. snarkk said, on August 5, 2017 at 10:41 am

Why bring upPanda? They should bring up Shaw to play first for Belt. He also can play OF. Pablo plays third and the Spread. So tired of this front office making PR moves…

    • dirtnrocksnomo said, on August 5, 2017 at 10:46 am

Shaw is not on the 40 man so the club would have to sacrifice one of the uber valuable bats of Parker, Gorky and Tomlinson.

      • alleykat69 said, on August 5, 2017 at 10:52 am

Shit the Giants can’t even do that right.
Don’t dump Specs he’s the only entertaining Giant left to watch..

  13. dirtnrocksnomo said, on August 5, 2017 at 10:44 am

I seem to remember some long rants about johnny law harassing him so it is probably something that built up over time. If they were low enough for him to take out the cockpit windshield they were probably “surveilling” his property. Maybe he was supplying a medical dispensary or something like that.

    • snarkk said, on August 5, 2017 at 10:55 am

So when they made those moves a few days ago they put Panda on the 40?…

      • dirtnrocksnomo said, on August 5, 2017 at 11:00 am

True that Sandoval is taking Belt’s spot but wasn’t there something about his deal that he had to end up in MLB by season end or becomes a free agent so he was coming anyway? I guess they could release Cain but you know…reasons.

      • alleykat69 said, on August 5, 2017 at 11:02 am

Maybe when they dumped Gillespie it opened a spot for the haystack?

  14. wilcojoe said, on August 5, 2017 at 10:44 am

I wouldn’t be surprised if Belt’s career is over. This sounds very Matheny like.

  15. dirtnrocksnomo said, on August 5, 2017 at 10:47 am

Had the same thought, wilco. Cold to say but it’s another reason they should’ve moved him last off season or at the deadline.

  16. dirtnrocksnomo said, on August 5, 2017 at 10:50 am

May as well bring Sandoval back now so Bochy can endlessly run him out there at the tail end of a lost season rather than breaking camp with him next spring.

So Puig’s new thing is to sexually assault the hitting coach after every HR he hits. The media thinks it’s funny. It’s not.
Puig grabs the hitting coach around the head and starts kissing him as the guy struggles to get away. But Puig doesn’t let go until he’s done kissing him. The look on the hitting coach’s face is complete distress. He obviously hates it. But it’s doubtful that Roberts cares.

  20. Flavor said, on August 5, 2017 at 11:18 am

jesus, why is this allowed? The hitting coach obviously hates it

    • snarkk said, on August 5, 2017 at 11:42 am

      Puig is a child.
Why would Roberts allow that to go on if it POs the coach that much? Weird…

Chuck, re your CTE post late last might, yes, I had seen that story. I can’t imagine how many hits in the A gap Gore has taken since high school. Seriously, if he lives past 60 it’ll be a miracle. I’ve lost interest in the NFL, that being just one reason. It is a league built on using up and spitting out bodies. I don’t know why Brady keeps in the game at 40. Nothing to prove. He’d rather be with his jock buds and get more CTE than be with Gisele, apparently…

  22. snarkk said, on August 5, 2017 at 11:37 am

I’m seriously going to root for the Nats to take out the Doghairs in the playoffs, and Dusty goes on to win the WS so he can retire with a ring. Dusty knows how to manage players and get the best out of them, and get a team to pull together. Nats were a mess with Matt Williams. Dusty fixed it. He’s crap managing pitchers, that’s his Achilles heel, with game managing not so hot either. Maybe his bench coach can fix that in playoffs. Anyway, with SF in the merde, I’m rooting for Dusty…

    • Flavor said, on August 5, 2017 at 11:47 am

absolutely. And I’m telling you, when the Dodgers get knocked out of the post season again, after possibly setting the win record, it’s going to be glorious….

  23. Flavor said, on August 5, 2017 at 11:45 am

now that it’s been established that The Donger can’t fucking hit a lick it’s even more amazing that he donged in his first game up here helping the team win. That’s incredible actually.

    • James said, on August 5, 2017 at 1:02 pm

Yeah, an unexciting but effective player for the most part. Hard to believe he couldn’t have been packaged for a mid-range prospect or two.

    • wilcojoe said, on August 5, 2017 at 1:07 pm

Unreal. Several contending teams would have been willing to give up something for Kontos.

  28. pawliekokonuts said, on August 5, 2017 at 1:17 pm

The Kontos thing was one of those waiver gambles. Nearly everyone gets put on waivers, by every team. The Pirates bit. Giants said, whatever. Go ahead. He would just get more expensive. My most memorable moments of him were in the 2012 postseason, esp. vs. Cincy.

  29. gianthead said, on August 5, 2017 at 1:26 pm

Bad luck for Belt…still cant hit the high fastball.

    • gianthead said, on August 5, 2017 at 1:29 pm

And apparently Stix hits helicopters better than Belt with high fastballs or attempting to Bunt…

    • James said, on August 5, 2017 at 2:06 pm

Couldn’t hit the high fastball, which prevented him from being a top player. Yet somehow he managed to put together very good numbers every year he played a full season. As he likely would have done in 2017.

  30. dirtnrocksnomo said, on August 5, 2017 at 1:40 pm

If Kontos isn’t in the plans next year then the FO had to get something at the deadline. Even if it was just a low level mid prospect. Letting him go for absolutely nothing is utter incompetence and squarely on Booby if he’s the GM.

    • Flavor said, on August 5, 2017 at 2:09 pm

  33. zumiee said, on August 5, 2017 at 2:59 pm

BF lays it out well in the main post about the abysmal job of drafting the Giants have done lately. This team could have reloaded by now, but instead we’re one of the worst teams in baseball. The question is how many bleak years are ahead for the Giants?

  34. Flavor said, on August 5, 2017 at 3:10 pm

Uh oh. Puig just homered. Look out!

  35. alleykat69 said, on August 5, 2017 at 3:37 pm

Kontos should of never agreed to help Amy G on the golf course, he was never the same pitcher after that!
Typical Booby, doesn’t know how to make a trade so he just goes for the salary dump.Cain should be next but nobody in the organization has the cojones to make that call..

  36. Flavor said, on August 5, 2017 at 3:52 pm

just heard Kontos get interviewed by Marty Lurie. He ended the interview by telling Kontos that he loved him, lqtm. I guess they have done several shows together. Anyway, surprised that he has been with us for 6 years. And something that hasn’t gotten addressed: why didn’t the Giants pull him back when he got claimed? If they couldn’t trade him they should have just kept him.
Pablo batting clean up tonight is the funniest thing I’ve heard all day.

  37. alleykat69 said, on August 5, 2017 at 3:59 pm

  38. Flavor said, on August 5, 2017 at 4:15 pm

So what’s your guy’s take on the reception Pablo gets tonight in his first at bat? I am expecting a strong response, at least half the fans will be giving him a standing O, maybe more. I’ll be shocked if it’s just a polite applause.

  39. djloo27 said, on August 5, 2017 at 4:35 pm

  40. snarkk said, on August 5, 2017 at 4:39 pm

I swear, I do not understand this Kontos thing. I think Bochy overworked his ass, and that is why he’s had nothing the past 3-4 weeks. Nothing. They could have DLed him for a bit to get rid of the dead arm, bring him back. Then try a trade after some decent shows before end August. To just give him up for nada other than the salary dump for 7 weeks is crazy. Even if they weren’t going to bring him back, they could have gotten some kind of a body, or a PTBNL that would be at least minor league roster fodder. They basically abused him arm, then said adios. IMO the SF front office is totally out to lunch…

    • Flavor said, on August 5, 2017 at 4:46 pm

yeah. Lurie was like “Hey George, at least this means someone WANTS you!” and Kontos agreed but come on, Pitt is taking this guy for free.

    • alleykat69 said, on August 5, 2017 at 5:13 pm

Do they no how to trade anymore? I think not,Booby still has to look over at Sabes for answers, and Sabes is saying :Hey kid I made my couple of splashes in the 90’s with my Matt Williams I’m not a idiot trade, and his rape of the Pads for Kevin Mitchell,Dave Draveky,Craig Lefferts in 87.
Throw in one of his best moves Jason Schmidt for a can of beans and Vogey, and the move at the break when he bitch slapped the Whitesox’s out of Danny Darwin,Roberto Hernandez, and a 3rd pitcher who I forget but was good as well. But now Sabes just kicks back and refuses to get involved so all the blame can fall on Booby.Good strategy on his part as he rides into the sunset..

These kids are 11-13, supposedly, most in the upper range. PRico was blasting Venezuela 8-2 when I left. There were a couple of kids on PR that looked like pro potential for sure. Tall, lanky, wiry strong and could mash with some sweet, compact swings. I don’t know if there were scouts there, but I would not doubt it since they sign kids at 16 in the Caribbean. Giants should have had somebody there. PR pitcher had a sweet curve, and the Venez pitcher wasn’t as good, but had a damn change-up that was nasty. PR kids were serious bidness, they can play…

That’s your Giant season in a nutshell..

Who’s the last Dodger to hit 3 HRs in a World Series game?

      • willedav said, on August 5, 2017 at 7:37 pm

Didn’t CF Willie Davis makes 3 errors in one?

Stupid poster, but he gets a lot of rhythm here. Fuck him and the Dodgers.

  67. alleykat69 said, on August 5, 2017 at 7:34 pm

Throws like that won’t win the fans over..

  68. Flavor said, on August 5, 2017 at 7:46 pm

Pence is absolutely worthless at this point. Didn’t see him falling apart so quickly. He’s like me out there.

  69. Flavor said, on August 5, 2017 at 7:53 pm

For those of you (Wilco) who couldn’t see it: Estes told a story about Shooter about how he came into the clubhouse and saw Shooter on the exercise bike….with ice packs on his shoulder and knee…..smoking a smoke and drinking a beer. That says so much about him as well as Dusty’s leadership abilities. I’m not saying Beck could have been better if he actually took care of himself, it is pretty amazing he got so far in the major leagues acting like that. If Dusty’s teams had been bad I would have said “bad manager”. But the dude just knew what to let go and what not to let go…..
Time will tell if Roberts has the same touch. This Puig thing making out with the neck of his hitting coach is something I would like to have seen how Dusty would have dealt with……..

    • pawliekokonuts said, on August 5, 2017 at 8:05 pm

Dusty would’ve just done the death-defying toothpick twirl.

  70. alleykat69 said, on August 5, 2017 at 8:04 pm

LA’s hitting coach now claims he has a Hickey from Puig..

  71. Lurker John said, on August 5, 2017 at 8:08 pm

Beck had heart. That’s what got him to where he was. He was tough as hell and battled his ass off, every time out there. He’d get beat sometimes, but it was never because he mailed it in. He had some great times with the Giants. This team has none of that.

  72. Lurker John said, on August 5, 2017 at 8:16 pm

If Evans doesn’t get canned right after the season ends, I’m going to shit. This stupid Panda move is just the latest in a long line of incompetent decisions. He has no business running any team let alone a MLB team. What an idiot.

  73. Flavor said, on August 5, 2017 at 8:28 pm

great swing and hit. Better than anything else we have tonight. I’ll take it.

  74. Flavor said, on August 5, 2017 at 8:29 pm

goddamn he still can’t keep his front shirt in his pants. Still fat. Still…whatever.

  75. Flavor said, on August 5, 2017 at 8:30 pm

which archway? WHICH ARCHWAY JIN YANG MOTHERFUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (you gotta watch Silicon Valley to appreciate that one)

  76. Flavor said, on August 5, 2017 at 8:32 pm

Pablo looks like he just got out of a sauna. Completely gassed. Zero conditioning for that guy, what has he been doing that he can’t run the bases once without looking like he’s having a heart attack immediately after??????

  77. Flavor said, on August 5, 2017 at 8:32 pm

    Well…I couldn’t have done that…..

  78. Flavor said, on August 5, 2017 at 8:50 pm

horrible uni’s tonight. One of the worst I’ve ever seen. College shit.

  79. unca_chuck said, on August 5, 2017 at 8:54 pm

No kidding. Panda was flat out spectacular here for his time. Not sure why the animosity. He’s holding back Ryder fucking Jones? Please. We’ve had 15 guy s fail at 3rd base, so what the fuck?

As much as Booby owns the lack of trades and general decline of the team, the scouting depoartment has been shooting blanks for 8 years now.

  80. djloo27 said, on August 5, 2017 at 9:00 pm

Sure, PH for your clean-up hitter on the night of his storybook comeback when you’re 74 GB…

    • Macdog said, on August 5, 2017 at 9:04 pm

      Yeah, that was inspiring.

  81. unca_chuck said, on August 5, 2017 at 9:03 pm

I think Panda was out of gas anyway. Posey? Sure

  82. Flavor said, on August 5, 2017 at 9:04 pm

Bochy seems to have a real fucking feel for the moment. Whatever. I agree Chuck but what would you have rather seen?

    • unca_chuck said, on August 5, 2017 at 9:07 pm

Yeah, pretty dumb, but I think Panda woulda at least got a sac fly.

  83. unca_chuck said, on August 5, 2017 at 9:05 pm

    Bleeeeh.

    Parker’s raking tho.

  84. djloo27 said, on August 5, 2017 at 9:12 pm

Time to let Goldschmidt beat us…

    • zumiee said, on August 5, 2017 at 9:27 pm

If it goes extra innings, Goldy will get another chance.

  85. Flavor said, on August 5, 2017 at 9:28 pm

I’m arguing with some dumb 16 year old girl on twitter about the Dodgers. What have I become? Logging off………

  86. unca_chuck said, on August 5, 2017 at 9:30 pm

Twitter is only good for Super 70s Sports. Otherwise I have no use for it.

Kinda looks like Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie.

  88. Flavor said, on August 5, 2017 at 9:51 pm

    • zumiee said, on August 5, 2017 at 9:53 pm

    • willedav said, on August 5, 2017 at 9:57 pm

maybe that’s your CF for next year and some protection behind Posey. Yeah he has couple nice games, nice grab tonite too plus an assist.

  89. Macdog said, on August 5, 2017 at 9:52 pm

    1-0 with Pablo back!

  90. djloo27 said, on August 5, 2017 at 9:53 pm

Incredibly stupid way to set the defense in that situation…

    • willedav said, on August 5, 2017 at 10:01 pm

yeah strange alignment. thx for the WS card with box too. I liked Davis, dunno what happened to him that day but I remember watching that game.

      • djloo27 said, on August 5, 2017 at 10:07 pm

He lost one or two in the sun, I think…

  91. unca_chuck said, on August 5, 2017 at 9:57 pm

No shit. What good is fielding a grounder 30′ behind 2nd base?

Good to see Parker hitting. Maybe he’s the missing ingredient.

    hah

  92. Flavor said, on August 5, 2017 at 10:05 pm

i’m still pissed Bochy pulled Pablo back for his at bat. Literally ruined the night for me.

  93. willedav said, on August 5, 2017 at 10:23 pm

I know it’s meaningless but I’d like to see Giants finish with better record than as many teams in the league as possible.

Directly ahead of them are the Reds who lost at home to STL and are now 45-65. SD 48 Ws Mets 49.
Reds are 6th in HRs with 147 but only 10th in runs scored and have given up 100 more runs to opposition and 30 more bombs. they are dead last in ERA, over 5.00 runs a game.

Mets have similar stats, lot of HRs (2nd in NL) low BA/OB and 14th in ERA = 10 games under .500.

  94. unca_chuck said, on August 5, 2017 at 11:02 pm

Just saw the Puig vid. If I’m the Dodgers hitting coach, I slap him in the face every strikeout.
