A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Fun With Numbers

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 11, 2017

Last night on Facebook, MacDog humorously noted that the Yankees and their 16 runs would have handily beat the NY Giants and their 3 points. I added in the SF Giants (1) and the SF 49ers (3) and the Yankees still killed all three teams. We’d have to insert the Cardinal’s 24 points to finally beat them. Sadly, if you added the 42 USC scored to the Yankees 16….

It was a horrible weekend for Bay Area sports, something we are well conditioned to tolerate lately. Madison Bumgarner is due 12 million in 2018 and 2019. Anyone still feel like tearing up that deal and giving him 300 million? God, if we do that this team will be screwed for the next 10 years……

There are 17 games remaining. We have 89 losses. You do the math and the death march to 100 starts tonight.

I have spoken with Chris Castellani via twitter and here is his response:

Look at it this way: if the Giants at 6-7 had played everybody else the way they’ve played the 92-51 Dodgers, they’d be the 8th best team in NL. Miami is 7 games under .500, Pirates 10 under, Pads and Braves 14 under yada yada.

Kinda funny the way LA has been knocked around lately by other teams in the NL West, because usually kicking butt on Division foes has been big part of their MO for success

Anyone else around here (SF bay area) feel the windstorm this morning? I had windows open because of heat and woke up 2:45 AM and wind was howling for another hour. Read this morning about power outages locally.
Supposed to have something to do with some storm off San Diego coast. wtf?

  3. willedav said, on September 11, 2017 at 8:20 am

WAB down to 13-20, .394. Jones in the 9 hole 0-3 with 2 Ks, batting .185 with .570 OPS. Kid has a nice backstory of following his college baseball coaching Dad around, but wow this sure ain’t AAA.

As Dylan said in Ballad of a Thin Man

    you know something is happening
but you don’t know what it is
    do you Mr. Jones

    • Flavor said, on September 11, 2017 at 8:42 am

it’s still higher than when he was playing. That’s the other number to watch for the next 17 games.

  4. snarkk said, on September 11, 2017 at 8:54 am

Abreu shows what happens if Giants got Stanton. It won’t happen, but still. Abreu is a stud, but look where his team is. The team stinks. One guy, no matter how good, isn’t going to bring competency and competitiveness. No matter how good.
Ditto on Bum, BTW. No way you give this guy a massive, 6 year deal…

    • Macdog said, on September 11, 2017 at 9:07 am

Yeah, the White Sox had Sale and Abreu from 2014-16 and couldn’t even play .500 in each of those three seasons.

  5. Macdog said, on September 11, 2017 at 9:00 am

Willedav re your 7:49: I saw somewhere yesterday that the Giants did not win a season series against 8 of the bottom 9 teams (the Giants, of course, being the other one) in all of MLB. The breakdown:

    Phillies 3-4
    White Sox 1-2
    Tigers 1-2
    Reds 3-4
    A’s 2-2
    Mets 1-5
    Padres 5-11
    Braves 3-4

    Total: 19-34

    Me and Ryder Jones
We got a slump goin’ on
We both know that it’s wrong
    But it’s much too strong
    To let it go now…

  7. djloo27 said, on September 11, 2017 at 9:10 am

I think Bum’s got some good years left, but he’ll have to re-prove himself since the accident.
Guess the Giants played it smart financially…

    • Flavor said, on September 11, 2017 at 9:42 am

they’re gonna fuck it up by giving him a massive extension some time next year. Book it.

  8. Flavor said, on September 11, 2017 at 9:52 am

I actually completely agree with James re: bum. His postseason success has skewed the reality of how good a pitcher he actually is. He’s very good, hardly a 300 mil contract guy tho

  9. James said, on September 11, 2017 at 10:26 am

Stat looking for an acronym: Giants 2017 winning percentage in games Posey appears in: .360

  10. zumiee said, on September 11, 2017 at 11:58 am

The Giants starters actually pitched pretty well against the Dodgers last time. But of course the Giants bullpen did its usual thing, as the Dodgers swept the series.
It would be nice to win at least one of the games in this series. Maybe the offense can somehow go off in one of the games.

  11. wilcojoe said, on September 11, 2017 at 12:44 pm

I never thought I would see Dollar dog night at AT&T. According to twitter, is has come to that.

    • wilcojoe said, on September 11, 2017 at 12:45 pm

And against the Dodgers no less. Wow!

  12. zumiee said, on September 11, 2017 at 3:21 pm

I give all the Giants broadcasters credit for trying to keep their energy up, as if these remaining games mean anything. A broadcaster has to really earn their money in a 10-1 loss.

  13. Flavor said, on September 11, 2017 at 3:21 pm

look, the Dodgers have lost what? 14 of 15? Something like that. They stink right now. The question is how bad do they stink. If it’s as bad as us maybe we can make a game of it. I’m assuming they haven’t gotten this bad tho.

    • zumiee said, on September 11, 2017 at 3:56 pm

The Giants have to jump on the Dodgers’ starting pitchers. Once it gets to the Dodgers’ bullpen, it’s a bunch of guys throwing 95-100 gas, and the Giants aren’t likely to do much with that. But all these junk-balling starters that the Dodgers have, the Giants could potentially do something with that. Although I see that the Dodgers have Kershaw pitching in the series now, and originally he wasn’t. Roberts really wants these games vs. the Giants. The Dodgers have the Nats coming up next, and he’s not as confident about those games, even with Harper still out, although Roberts would never admit it.

  14. zumiee said, on September 11, 2017 at 4:00 pm

The problem the Dodgers have with their starting pitchers after Kershaw is that they’re all a bunch of nibblers. They get a lot of 3-2 counts and high pitch counts, and they’re often getting near 100 pitches by the 5th inning or so. Their bullpen is very good, but it could potentially be tiring, even with the September call-ups. Baez in particular seems kind of flat.

    • zumiee said, on September 11, 2017 at 4:02 pm

Arizona and Colorado really tore into the Dodgers’ starting pitchers, but I don’t know if our Punch and Judy hitters can rise to the occasion.

  15. Macdog said, on September 11, 2017 at 4:45 pm

If the Giants are going to keep trotting out MadBum, why didn’t they make sure he was pitching in the Dodgers series? Maybe it wouldn’t matter the way he pitched yesterday, but I have to believe he would have been a little more amped up to face the Dodgers than the White Sox. Plus it gets a good-hitting pitcher into this sad-sack lineup.

    • Flavor said, on September 11, 2017 at 4:51 pm

      that is a fantastic point

    • zumiee said, on September 11, 2017 at 4:52 pm

And especially since Roberts rearranged his pitching rotation to get Kershaw into the series.

    • Flavor said, on September 11, 2017 at 5:11 pm

Watching Yanks-Rays at Citi Field, reminds me of ’74-’75 seasons when Yanks played at Shea while Yankee Stadium was being renovated. I think it was in ’75, I saw the Yanks and Angels play a doubleheader at Shea, Frank Tanana and Nolan Ryan pitched for the Halos. The Yanks got swept.

    • djloo27 said, on September 11, 2017 at 6:20 pm

That situation played a big part in Murcer getting dealt to SF…

      • Macdog said, on September 11, 2017 at 6:44 pm

I see his HRs plummeted in his one season at Shea.

  17. Flavor said, on September 11, 2017 at 6:54 pm

After that, I’m playing video games or grabbing a beer. I’ve only gone to bed angry after a Tigers game once in my life. And no, it was not against you guys.

  38. Flavor said, on September 11, 2017 at 8:33 pm

Here’s a question for you: As Giants fans, even with 3 in the bank since 2010, most of us are ready for Bochy to hit the bricks. Your Asmus rant is one of the all time greatest things I’ve ever seen on the internet. Question: Are other Tiger fans as passionately against this dude as you are? Who would you like to see manage the team?

    • Chris Castellani (@Castellani2014) said, on September 11, 2017 at 8:36 pm

I’d say there’s 50% of the population that thinks he’s as much of a putz as I do. 30% don’t hate him but they still want him gone, and 20% still defend him.

      • Flavor said, on September 11, 2017 at 8:38 pm

    • Chris Castellani (@Castellani2014) said, on September 11, 2017 at 9:18 pm

I’d say 90% positive. Never in my life have I felt such overwhelming love and support.

The O hit .200 with 9 HRs in 14 games
SPs had an ERA over 6 and went 5.2 innings a game. Pen, having to work 4 innings every game, was at 3.91. Jansen 3 shutout innings only guy who held up his own.
