Fun With Numbers
Last night on Facebook, MacDog humorously noted that the Yankees and their 16 runs would have handily beat the NY Giants and their 3 points. I added in the SF Giants (1) and the SF 49ers (3) and the Yankees still killed all three teams. We’d have to insert the Cardinal’s 24 points to finally beat them. Sadly, if you added the 42 USC scored to the Yankees 16….
It was a horrible weekend for Bay Area sports, something we are well conditioned to tolerate lately. Madison Bumgarner is due 12 million in 2018 and 2019. Anyone still feel like tearing up that deal and giving him 300 million? God, if we do that this team will be screwed for the next 10 years……
There are 17 games remaining. We have 89 losses. You do the math and the death march to 100 starts tonight.
I have spoken with Chris Castellani via twitter and here is his response:
Look at it this way: if the Giants at 6-7 had played everybody else the way they’ve played the 92-51 Dodgers, they’d be the 8th best team in NL. Miami is 7 games under .500, Pirates 10 under, Pads and Braves 14 under yada yada.
Kinda funny the way LA has been knocked around lately by other teams in the NL West, because usually kicking butt on Division foes has been big part of their MO for success
Anyone else around here (SF bay area) feel the windstorm this morning? I had windows open because of heat and woke up 2:45 AM and wind was howling for another hour. Read this morning about power outages locally.
Supposed to have something to do with some storm off San Diego coast. wtf?
WAB down to 13-20, .394. Jones in the 9 hole 0-3 with 2 Ks, batting .185 with .570 OPS. Kid has a nice backstory of following his college baseball coaching Dad around, but wow this sure ain’t AAA.
As Dylan said in Ballad of a Thin Man
you know something is happening
but you don’t know what it is
do you Mr. Jones
it’s still higher than when he was playing. That’s the other number to watch for the next 17 games.
Abreu shows what happens if Giants got Stanton. It won’t happen, but still. Abreu is a stud, but look where his team is. The team stinks. One guy, no matter how good, isn’t going to bring competency and competitiveness. No matter how good.
Ditto on Bum, BTW. No way you give this guy a massive, 6 year deal…
Yeah, the White Sox had Sale and Abreu from 2014-16 and couldn’t even play .500 in each of those three seasons.
Willedav re your 7:49: I saw somewhere yesterday that the Giants did not win a season series against 8 of the bottom 9 teams (the Giants, of course, being the other one) in all of MLB. The breakdown:
Phillies 3-4
White Sox 1-2
Tigers 1-2
Reds 3-4
A’s 2-2
Mets 1-5
Padres 5-11
Braves 3-4
Total: 19-34
Me and Ryder Jones
We got a slump goin’ on
We both know that it’s wrong
But it’s much too strong
To let it go now…
I think Bum’s got some good years left, but he’ll have to re-prove himself since the accident.
Guess the Giants played it smart financially…
they’re gonna fuck it up by giving him a massive extension some time next year. Book it.
I actually completely agree with James re: bum. His postseason success has skewed the reality of how good a pitcher he actually is. He’s very good, hardly a 300 mil contract guy tho
Stat looking for an acronym: Giants 2017 winning percentage in games Posey appears in: .360
The Giants starters actually pitched pretty well against the Dodgers last time. But of course the Giants bullpen did its usual thing, as the Dodgers swept the series.
It would be nice to win at least one of the games in this series. Maybe the offense can somehow go off in one of the games.
I never thought I would see Dollar dog night at AT&T. According to twitter, is has come to that.
And against the Dodgers no less. Wow!
I give all the Giants broadcasters credit for trying to keep their energy up, as if these remaining games mean anything. A broadcaster has to really earn their money in a 10-1 loss.
look, the Dodgers have lost what? 14 of 15? Something like that. They stink right now. The question is how bad do they stink. If it’s as bad as us maybe we can make a game of it. I’m assuming they haven’t gotten this bad tho.
The Giants have to jump on the Dodgers’ starting pitchers. Once it gets to the Dodgers’ bullpen, it’s a bunch of guys throwing 95-100 gas, and the Giants aren’t likely to do much with that. But all these junk-balling starters that the Dodgers have, the Giants could potentially do something with that. Although I see that the Dodgers have Kershaw pitching in the series now, and originally he wasn’t. Roberts really wants these games vs. the Giants. The Dodgers have the Nats coming up next, and he’s not as confident about those games, even with Harper still out, although Roberts would never admit it.
The problem the Dodgers have with their starting pitchers after Kershaw is that they’re all a bunch of nibblers. They get a lot of 3-2 counts and high pitch counts, and they’re often getting near 100 pitches by the 5th inning or so. Their bullpen is very good, but it could potentially be tiring, even with the September call-ups. Baez in particular seems kind of flat.
Arizona and Colorado really tore into the Dodgers’ starting pitchers, but I don’t know if our Punch and Judy hitters can rise to the occasion.
If the Giants are going to keep trotting out MadBum, why didn’t they make sure he was pitching in the Dodgers series? Maybe it wouldn’t matter the way he pitched yesterday, but I have to believe he would have been a little more amped up to face the Dodgers than the White Sox. Plus it gets a good-hitting pitcher into this sad-sack lineup.
that is a fantastic point
And especially since Roberts rearranged his pitching rotation to get Kershaw into the series.

and stretched him….again.
I thought after “and stretched him” he yells “OH GOOD!!!”
sounds like *again* to me and while I’ve listened to it 40 times I’m willing to listen to it another 40 to see if it’s what you say.
I might be over 100. Watch his lips when he says it…
Watching Yanks-Rays at Citi Field, reminds me of ’74-’75 seasons when Yanks played at Shea while Yankee Stadium was being renovated. I think it was in ’75, I saw the Yanks and Angels play a doubleheader at Shea, Frank Tanana and Nolan Ryan pitched for the Halos. The Yanks got swept.
That situation played a big part in Murcer getting dealt to SF…
I see his HRs plummeted in his one season at Shea.
I still think he’s saying *again* not *oh good*. Maybe Diggity can weigh in on this or some other vet. You qualify as a vet if you’ve watched this video 30 plus times.
I forgot the *he stretch him…* was the line San Diggity was questioning last week. He is busy but will weigh in when he gets home
Bochy said this today:
“we need to get this offense going. We’re stagnant right now, the last couple of games.”
Last couple of games?
slapping asses and chewing seeds… that’s really all he’s concentrating on, I really believe that.
Boch is master of the understatement.
BTW, what “offense” is he talking about?…
Oh good, the “Happy Hour” show, said no one ever.
Does anybody watch that show?
Cleveland: 19 straight. That’s pretty good.
This is the Yankees version of Amy G.(Meredith Marokovits):

she looks like she could carry a rack of bats on each shoulder.
Even our grounds crew sucks…
Diggity thinks he’s saying “oh dude”. I’d rank that last after *again* and “oh good.” I am trying to find this kid’s twitter handle to ask him directly but so far I’m striking out.
They should postpone this game. It’s already 8. Nobody wants to sit through this.
I found him. This is the dude.
https://twitter.com/castellani2014?lang=en
Can you communicate with him?
I would like him to know he is basically my whole world…
In case he doesn’t remember:
lol, he’s got a bunch of good videos. This is gonna take some time to work through
at the end of this he addresses the Fulmer thing.
We need him here. I wish I could adopt him…
A little more hustle from that grounds crew would be nice.
More slow honkies…
lulz!
Great times!
I have spoken with the tiger fan (via twitter) and will be posting his reply in the main thread shortly….
This is the most exciting news of the season!
Loo, stick around, he says he’s going to post a comment here in the next 30 minutes.
I ain’t goin’ nowhere…
The lightning storm has hit the Central Valley.
Hi everyone! I wanted to let you all know that I was extremely humbled when I discovered that you were fans of my videos. It’s been an unbelievable journey these last couple months and it wouldn’t have happened without people like you. I guess if you have questions I’d be happy to answer them lol.
you’re the king. I try to work “side office” into a conversation every day. It’s tough but I’ve been pulling it off most days
It’s the effort that matters.
I don’t leave the house without watching you first.
HOW THE FUCK do you transition from tantrum to calmness so seamlessly?
Great question. I’ve answered it before but I love repeating it because I think it’s important. Those videos are my window. That’s where I get the rage out. After that, I’m playing video games or grabbing a beer. I’ve only gone to bed angry after a Tigers game once in my life. And no, it was not against you guys.
Here’s a question for you: As Giants fans, even with 3 in the bank since 2010, most of us are ready for Bochy to hit the bricks. Your Asmus rant is one of the all time greatest things I’ve ever seen on the internet. Question: Are other Tiger fans as passionately against this dude as you are? Who would you like to see manage the team?
I’d say there’s 50% of the population that thinks he’s as much of a putz as I do. 30% don’t hate him but they still want him gone, and 20% still defend him.
you cannot defend that crap. I learned that somewhere.
After you answer Loo’s 8:37pm, I have another question: you’ve obviously gotten a lot of attention from this. What % of the response has been positive vs the negative idiots who don’t get the genius of that video?
I’d say 90% positive. Never in my life have I felt such overwhelming love and support.
What other teams do you root for, Chris – and do they get you as riled as the Tigers?
I’m a big University of Michigan fan. Love football and basketball. I root for the Detroit Lions and Pistons as well. Michigan football and basketball get me very riled up, but not the way the Tigers do.
Well keep up the fantastic work. Hope you’ll post here in the future.
We could use the spark…
Speaking of Shea Stadium….

Paul already separating himself . . . .
Paul’s thinking: “I wrote Yesterday. I don’t need these jokers.”
🙂
Man, that’s a seriously beautiful Rickenbacker John’s carrying.
A guitar of its time.
Brad Ausmus had an 18-year career with a 75 OPS+. The guy is a survivor. Pitching aces come and go.
Anticipation for that first pitch is really building . . . .
Oh, yeah, it already happened.
Granderson batting leadoff? Roberts was stretching on that one.
cbs site had a column where they combined LA stats during the slump.
The O hit .200 with 9 HRs in 14 games
SPs had an ERA over 6 and went 5.2 innings a game. Pen, having to work 4 innings every game, was at 3.91. Jansen 3 shutout innings only guy who held up his own.
Zum, Granderson frequently hit leadoff with the Mets, including their 3-game sweep at SF where he went 5-for-12.
Ownage!
Except for those few games, that doesn’t mean Collins knew what he was doing, either. 🙂
Things are floundering at the moment on the Dodgers Digest blog:
williams517
My ass burns from shitting all day today.
DodgerNoLongerLivingInWeHo
Why did you tell us this?
williams517
Why not?
Williams517 appears to occupy a sensibility somewhere between the Rooster and the Hanger or the Chicken Hawk or whatever their Splash handles were.
D-Backs lost; Dodgers trimmed a game off their magic number.
Game to resume at 10:50. Insanity.
The effing seagulls will give up by midnight.
They’ll be sitting in the club seats by midnight…
no, there won’t be anything for them there
This is sos for the east coasters . . .
Hey, good start!
Any friggin’ Giants fan left in the stands at the end of this game, will deserve something of value.
An award; free beer; and / or immediate institutionalization…
first two innings look good. Maeda’s got a 92-93 mph fastball he’s hitting the corners with–wtf is he throwing that other shit within swinging distance? well, wtf. blow up dodgers, blow up
Homeplate ump isn’t awesome.
Dodgers doinked some cheap hits off Blach.
It was the wrong ump for Blach. Wasn’t giving the low strike.
Nightmare inning is finally over.
Sandoval, the out-machine.
I’m out. Damn, couldn’t hold a 4-0 lead.
Our sucky bullpen doing its thing.
Giants’ offense is battling.
Best inning I’ve seen from Strickland, maybe ever. No kidding. He went through Seager, Turner, and Bellinger.
Giants win!!!!!!!!!!
