A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Post Season Taking Shape

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 12, 2017

That was some pretty compelling baseball yesterday. Hat is off to Strasburg who took the calls of him being a pussy and stomped them into the Cubs faces. I’m on board with the Yankees winning for 2 reasons: 1) it kicked the annoying Indian fans out of the equation and 2) I think Houston now has a free pass to the World Series. I’ll be very surprised if they don’t make quick work of New York……

Dusty still has a decision to make. Gonzalez or Roark? That’s a lot like picking between Livan or Livan. He should flip a coin and then choose whatever side in faced down…….

Gonzalez…Go Nats! This should be fun. 2 of the best “players managers” ever who are also among the worst at in game strategy..Who will screw up the worst?

    • Flavor said, on October 12, 2017 at 7:43 am

I think either of these teams can beat LA rather easily so I am not really rooting for either to win.

  2. willedav said, on October 12, 2017 at 7:48 am

Still think a lot of it comes down to pitching. Judge had a monster year but you stop him by striking his ass out.
Yesterday Cubs didn’t score at all and Tribe, another team with powerful LU, only got 2, not enough to win vs. Yanks and their monster pen.

That would be one thing might be Stros Achilles heel, not enough pitching. They are great story tho and them vs. Nats would be fun Series. Even in modern era, Yanks/ LA Dodgers old news.

I was able to get tickets to game 6 of the Astros-Yankees series but I am afraid they might not make it that far. Houston has had pretty good success against the Yankees the last few years. Corrrea is 14-28 with 2 homers and 10 RBI in his short career against the Yanks. Keuchel has serious ownage on them as well.

I don’t think Houston could have gotten past Cleveland had they won last night. Houston has no excuses not to make the World Series now.

  4. wilcojoe said, on October 12, 2017 at 8:09 am

Not sure who I want to win tonight. I just hope neither bullpen gets pounded so everyone is ready to take on the Doghairs at full strength.

    • Flavor said, on October 12, 2017 at 8:36 am

yeah. the downside to this battle is that LA gets to face a possibly burnt up pen. But they’ve been sitting around awhile, that can be a neg too.

      • wilcojoe said, on October 12, 2017 at 8:46 am

Great point. I don’t think overuse is really an issue in the heat of the postseason. Sitting around twiddling your thumbs is probably more detrimental.

      • unca_chuck said, on October 12, 2017 at 8:56 am

It was for the Giants in 2002 . . .

      • Flavor said, on October 12, 2017 at 11:05 am

Tigers in ’14 sat around for 10 days or some shit and never looked like they even woke up for the World Series

      • unca_chuck said, on October 12, 2017 at 1:21 pm

        The burnt pen, I meant.

        The 14 WS was KC. You talking about 2012 . . . ?

      • Flavor said, on October 12, 2017 at 4:27 pm

        Yes

  5. unca_chuck said, on October 12, 2017 at 9:16 am

It didn’t help that they lost, but this is pretty funny . . .

  6. unca_chuck said, on October 12, 2017 at 1:23 pm

    Then there’s this . . .

  7. chipower9 said, on October 12, 2017 at 1:46 pm

    Go Nats.

    Go Astros.

And while I am usually a hard-core NL guy, I am pulling for Houston to win it all.

  8. unca_chuck said, on October 12, 2017 at 1:50 pm

Likewise. Although Hou was an NL team most of its existence,

  9. zumiee said, on October 12, 2017 at 4:10 pm

It’s pretty hard to find something to dislike about the Astros.

    • djloo27 said, on October 12, 2017 at 4:34 pm

Obviously you’ve gotten over Mark Portugal…

      • chipower9 said, on October 12, 2017 at 5:51 pm

        LMAO…

  10. alleykat69 said, on October 12, 2017 at 4:35 pm

I’m pulling for the Astros all the way baby!
It would be bitchin to see that organization win its 1st W/S..And if they get to the final show they should have Jim”ToyCannon” Wynn throw the 1st pitch at home in his Colt45 jersey!! That would be epic!!

    • djloo27 said, on October 12, 2017 at 5:19 pm

      • chipower9 said, on October 12, 2017 at 5:52 pm

That’s bad ass, Loo! Go 45s…er, Astros!

    • gianthead said, on October 12, 2017 at 7:31 pm

Anyone Not rooting for the Astros would be Un-American…

  11. chipower9 said, on October 12, 2017 at 5:50 pm

    Boo Ya, Nats!

    • djloo27 said, on October 12, 2017 at 6:02 pm

      Lest we forget…

      • Flavor said, on October 12, 2017 at 6:09 pm

a far more badass team name in my opinion

      • unca_chuck said, on October 12, 2017 at 7:41 pm

I used to call them the elbows based on that logo. I never got was ELB stood for.

      • snarkk said, on October 12, 2017 at 7:41 pm

’94 expos were definitely badass, with Felipe, before he became Selipe, at the helm. Strike destroyed a likely champ season.
Trivia: who was the future Giants hurler on that Expo staff?…

  12. snarkk said, on October 12, 2017 at 6:50 pm

Who is the woman commentator on radio with Flemm in this Nats/Cubs game? They sound like an old married couple — can’t agree on anything…

    • Macdog said, on October 12, 2017 at 7:01 pm

It’s probably Jessica Mendoza, who’s part of the Sunday night crew.

  13. alleykat69 said, on October 12, 2017 at 7:12 pm

The curse of Dusty Baker continues as the Nats self destruct ,,

  14. Flavor said, on October 12, 2017 at 7:13 pm

Cubs bat around on Scherzer. Ot course they do. Baseball is the best.

  15. alleykat69 said, on October 12, 2017 at 7:16 pm

I’ve always have said never trust a guy with 2 colored eyes! Cubs ripped Scherzer a new one ☝️..

  16. gianthead said, on October 12, 2017 at 7:29 pm

Where have we seen this Dusty mismanagement of his pitching before??? Mmmmm….

    • snarkk said, on October 12, 2017 at 7:37 pm

I dunno. Scherzer is the ace, Dusty brought him in to bridge to the late innings. I don’t think I can fault Dusty on this one. Cubs dinked and dunked, didn’t hit anything hard, plus Nuts miscues…

      • gianthead said, on October 12, 2017 at 7:42 pm

Scherzer just pitched Monday…has he ever gone on less than 3 days rest???

And that is Dusty’s problem. He sees everyone bring in starters in relief so therefore he thinks that is what you are supposed to do…I would have kept Fat Albers in the game…

  17. unca_chuck said, on October 12, 2017 at 7:40 pm

Russell’s rope was pretty hard. It made it to the wall.

  18. unca_chuck said, on October 12, 2017 at 7:40 pm

Was Gonzalez gassed? I missed the 4th.

  19. Flavor said, on October 12, 2017 at 7:40 pm

just got an email from Twin, very bad news, his tumor has returned and it is large.

  20. Macdog said, on October 12, 2017 at 7:44 pm

    Oh my . . .

  21. unca_chuck said, on October 12, 2017 at 7:49 pm

Oh no. Damn. Still think we should road trip out to see him.

  22. unca_chuck said, on October 12, 2017 at 7:51 pm

Scherzer just imploded. I’m watching the replay now. I guess he ain’t no Bummie.

Weiter fucked the pooch when he missed the K.

  23. unca_chuck said, on October 12, 2017 at 7:53 pm

    Werth-less. Wow.

    • snarkk said, on October 12, 2017 at 8:00 pm

Flemm predicted earlier Werth could be a defensive issue…

      • alleykat69 said, on October 12, 2017 at 8:26 pm

Probably said that about Fred Lewis as well. Atleast with Freddy the ball found glove except his glove wasn’t open..

  24. unca_chuck said, on October 12, 2017 at 8:05 pm

Gonzalez had thrown 67 pitches in 3 innings. He wasn’t tired. I don’t know. Dusty figured he could get a few out of Scherzer to get to the 7th. Not the worst call.

Cubbies looking wobbly all of a sudden.

  25. unca_chuck said, on October 12, 2017 at 8:12 pm

Another reason the NFL is stupid. Newton tries to reach for th TD. They show 15 camera angles, but none of them are a) on the goal line, and b) on the sideline.

    • Flavor said, on October 12, 2017 at 8:20 pm

that is literally the dumbest thing in the NFL. How can they not have cameras set up everywhere? Hell they could hover a drone above the goal line when the play gets down there. They could do anything to fix it incl putting cams on the goal line. So stupid.

    • alleykat69 said, on October 12, 2017 at 8:34 pm

Clearly in. Maybe Cam needs to mount a Cam corder on his shoulder pads..
Ooh 😲 killer interception by Cam, turn out the lights the party’s over..

  26. Flavor said, on October 12, 2017 at 8:25 pm

gold? from Espn senior writer. lqtm

Dusty Baker clearly waited too long to remove Gio Gonzalez on a night he had no control, but the Nationals head to the fifth with a one-run lead and Max Scherzer is coming on in relief, pitching on two days of rest after throwing 98 pitches. In a perfect world, he gives the Nationals three innings, so Baker can go to Ryan Madson and Sean Doolittle the final two innings. Or maybe Scherzer pulls a Madison Bumgarner and goes the final five all by himself.

    snarkk’s 7:41: Kirk Rueter?

    • willedav said, on October 12, 2017 at 8:52 pm

yeah that’s who I thought Mac

    • snarkk said, on October 12, 2017 at 9:38 pm

      Yep, good call…

  28. mrsprtdude said, on October 12, 2017 at 8:51 pm

I hate to say i called it but the dumbest manager will lose it. Wade Davis in the 7th is gonna take it. Never pitched more than an inning in 2017. Nats 3 runs down in the 7th will win it!

  29. alleykat69 said, on October 12, 2017 at 9:03 pm

Well between these 2 dumb managers I’ll take Joe Maddon over Dusty Baker everyday of the week plus Sunday. And he can still polish a W/S ring while Dusty can just polish his toothpicks..

    • Macdog said, on October 12, 2017 at 9:25 pm

      And dumber players.

  30. mrsprtdude said, on October 12, 2017 at 9:26 pm

Replay on a pick-off too close to call and overturned. The skeptic in me says MLB wants the Cubs. That type of replay use is ruining baseball imo….

  31. alleykat69 said, on October 12, 2017 at 9:27 pm

    What a huge call!
As Dusty chokes on his toothpick…
He really is a snake 🐍 bitten manager..

  32. unca_chuck said, on October 12, 2017 at 9:39 pm

Has there ever been a 5 hour 9 inning game?

Yeah, when the talked about replay they said they wouldn’t use it like this.

  33. snarkk said, on October 12, 2017 at 9:41 pm

If you get picked off in that situation, the first base coach has to be fired, too. Your ass should basically be almost sitting on the first base bag with a man in scoring position to tie…

    • Macdog said, on October 12, 2017 at 9:44 pm

      Davey Lopes.

  34. snarkk said, on October 12, 2017 at 9:45 pm

Unfortunately, I think Doghairs are gonna take the Cubs. LA won’t implode like the Rats…

  35. Macdog said, on October 12, 2017 at 9:47 pm

The Nationals will never win a playoff series.

  36. mrsprtdude said, on October 12, 2017 at 9:51 pm

Call at 1st all wrong. Not definitive. Took almost 5 minutes to decide. Any replay any sport if it is not clearly wrong right away the call stands and move on. Davis clearly struggling. After he had time to regroup. Credit to him. He has NEVER had a save over 1 inning in his career till tonight and went 2 2/3 and went through a very potent line up twice to do it. SHIT!

    • sandog said, on October 12, 2017 at 9:59 pm

Totally agree with you on that call!
Man, other than the Bosox getting ousted, nothing is going my way these playoffs. I am now officially rooting for the Yankees now that the Tribe and Nats are out. I agree with Rooster that we are looking at a Yankee/Dodger WS.
I’d love to see the Giants target some Michael Taylor types in the draft. Smooth, athletic CF with wheels and some pop.

  37. unca_chuck said, on October 12, 2017 at 9:52 pm

Poor Dusty. Always the bridesmaid . . .

    • snarkk said, on October 12, 2017 at 10:03 pm

He’ll get crucified again for staff mismanagement. Left Gonzales in too long, shouldn’t have put in Scherzer. Arguable, sure. But, really, the Keystone Kops defense lost the game for them. I don’t see how he can be blamed for that…

      • theroooster said, on October 12, 2017 at 10:21 pm

Totally agree snarkk. Ugly game. Poor pitching all around, but the biggest killer for the Nats was the Little league caliber defense. Just horrible. Wieters? Catchers interference, Passed ball to score a run, throwing error to score another run, all in the same half inning. Werth? Just ugly baseball.

  38. mrsprtdude said, on October 12, 2017 at 10:21 pm

I kinda think it still goes on Dusty. Managing the pressure games the way he does puts more pressure on everyone. I don’t care enough, but i with the Detroit guy was a Nats fan right now. WTF is schurzer doing in the game?? Maddon too is so dumb it bugs the CRAP out of me when shit turns out good. Dusty should absolutely HATE that guy. used every guy in his bullpen by the start of the 7th and it worked out any way. Dusty should Kill for that kinda luck.
I too have had literally every team i rooted for lose so far. Lets go Dodgers:)

  39. unca_chuck said, on October 12, 2017 at 11:00 pm

Weiters really was their achilles heel. He was awful. And they blew the call on the swing that hit him.

  40. zumiee said, on October 13, 2017 at 12:24 am

    Oh the Nats….
“The next four batters reached via intentional walk, passed-ball strikeout, catcher’s interference and a hit by pitch. If that doesn’t sound familiar, it’s because it hasn’t happened before. Baseball-Reference has 2.73 million half innings in their database, and none have included all four of those events.”
