40 Man Roster Cain Use Some Talent

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on November 21, 2017

We always hear about the 40 man roster, mostly as it relates to moves we can’t make because of it. The 40 man does nothing but hamstrings and inhibits. It’s an obstructor. I almost never look at it. GM’s always speak of it in near hushed, hallowed tones……

Here’s a look at recent Giant moves regarding the 40 man:

I’ve heard of two of those guys…

What in the fuck was someone or something named “Engelb Vielma” doing on the 40 man? His name reads like a sleepy Trump tweet. #covfefe

I miss Nipper and Twin . . . This is classic from Unca and Nip:

That astroturf ended the career of Jim Lash for the 49ers. Lash, who the Niners got from the Vikes in 76 (for Mante Clark’s ill-fated run), shattered both his elbows diving for a pass.

Nipper on November 21, 2011 at 7:49 pm
Both elbows? How did he wipe his ass?

Cards held Heels under 100. Not a bad L tho (unlike losing earlier at home to East Wazzu), there isn’t a team other than zona like that in pac 12.

In fact it’s a nice wake up call coach can use to push his players to work harder and stay focused —hey you want to get in Tourney? You’re gonna face teams like last night.
How you plan to get to that level?

Just read story about ruthenium radiation spike (966% above normal) from Urals in Russia measured all the way to Italy Switzerland and France.
At the time (late September) of course, totally downplayed as “fluctuation” by Russian officials. wow

Safe travels to all those on road/in the air this week.

I hear Stanton has an opt out in 2020. So SF takes on all his salary and gives up a bunch of players so he has a shot to bail in 2020? Wtf?…

  5. willedav said, on November 21, 2017 at 10:56 am

OK, let’s assume the deal as Mac reported goes through. Giants lose Panik and the prospects but gain Gordon and Stanton, and hopefully Evans finds a decent hitting CF under his tree a month from now.

where would you bat Stanton? Marlins hit him second a lot iirc (I’ll go look it up on B/R), behind Gordon and ahead of Yelich and Ozuna in that order I think.

    Thoughts?

    • Flavor said, on November 21, 2017 at 11:44 am

No way in hell I hit him second. Then he walks and Posey and Belt are responsible for driving him in. And that’s not their game. He hits 4th in my line up.
      Gordon
      Belt
      Posey
      Stanton
      Crawford
      Arroyo
      Pence
      Pitcher
      BillyHam

      • snarkk said, on November 21, 2017 at 6:36 pm

Not bad. I like the idea of the two burners back to back. Belt 2nd is also not bad. I’d put Stanton 3rd, Posey cleanup = he gums up the base paths. I’d rather Stanton be on ahead of Posey, not the other way. Stanton can probably score from first on a Posey double, not the other way around…

    Some fun 2017 Stanton facts

He did hit second 110 games 419 ABs. 1.067 OPS 47 bombs 97 rbis. 66 walks
1.200 OPS for season vs. LHP.

Bombs: 4 separate months April May June Sept: 29 bombs 380 ABs
Bombs: July– 12 in 93 ABs August –18 (equal to Belt’s total and team lead) in 109

At ATT last year 6-14 2 doubles 3 HRs 1.744 OPS

  7. dirtnrocksnomo said, on November 21, 2017 at 12:13 pm

If the club picks up Stanton and Gordon a cheap defense focused CF is fine. In other words, Gorkys.

I’m not holding my breath but I hope Booby somehow pulls it off. Assuming a healthy Melancon, Smith returns to the BP and the club is ready to roll. I can taste the chacha bowls already!

  8. sandog said, on November 21, 2017 at 1:02 pm

I’ll say it again, if we truly are in play for Stanton, I think we need to hand it to our front office. We slam those guys all the time for not being serious about improving the club and just wanting to count money. If they are going after Stanton, I’m impressed big time. Will we still have holes? Yes, but damn do we need a right hand power bat– and he is an elite RH power bat.

  9. xoot said, on November 21, 2017 at 2:16 pm

Signing Stanton could be 1992 all over again–the owners showing a huge commitment to competing in the league as it plays now. I think they’d have to accept the luxury tax the way the bums do, at least for a while. Maybe they’re willing to do so given the ever increasing value of the franchise and their upcoming real estate development riches.

Bonds’s first contract was 6 years long; Stanton’s guaranteed only through 3 years (the opt-out clause Blade mentioned). Still, despite all that’s changed in 25 years, the idea of signing Stanton sure reminds me of 92.

  10. djloo27 said, on November 21, 2017 at 2:56 pm

Giant fans out there who favor getting Stanton should probably hold off on buying tickets for next season.
Gotta send the message loud and clear…

    • unca_chuck said, on November 21, 2017 at 4:23 pm

Not. Gonna. Happen. Thousands will buy anyway.

  11. djloo27 said, on November 21, 2017 at 3:01 pm

The great unknown about the Giants offer is how much money (if any) they expect the Marlins to eat.
The answer says a lot about how serious they really are…

    • zumiee said, on November 21, 2017 at 3:24 pm

That’s a great question- how serious are the Giants about this? Is this a “pretend to go after the guy” type of scenario?

    • xoot said, on November 21, 2017 at 3:45 pm

I don’t know what they have to gain by just pretending. When they went after Greinke and lost out they still had to improve the starting rotation and they did. They’ll alienate a lot of fans if they don’t follow through now to improve the OF and the middle of the lineup, Stanton or no Stanton.

      • zumiee said, on November 21, 2017 at 3:51 pm

To try to boost ticket sales for a few weeks? 🙂

      • xoot said, on November 21, 2017 at 4:08 pm

the season ticket holders who return this year, and I bet most do, won’t be so pleased if the team sucks again and they can’t unload the games they don’t want to attend on stubhub etc.–again.

Giants favored to land Giancarlo Stanton, according to oddsmaker

    • gianthead said, on November 21, 2017 at 5:59 pm

And if Stanton does opt out after 2020 and we lose those prospects….that is a huge break with savings of about $225 mill. We get 3 prime years of Stanton and Dee Gordon’s contract also expires in 2020. Only $75.5 million will be committed to payroll sans Bum in 2021 so let’s say $100 mill be the 2021 payroll.

Plus Posey, Cueto, Crawford and Belt (if still there) all have rxpiring contracts…

  13. snarkk said, on November 21, 2017 at 5:57 pm

    Calixte was DFA’d?
That dude actually played quite a bit. Another example of how weak the Giants farm system is. I thought Slania was supposed to be a comer – he was outrighted? Farm system is Putrid…

    • blade3colorado said, on November 21, 2017 at 6:07 pm

Farm system will have to wait . . . umm, maybe 10 years a la Astros. With the Giants dead set on Stanton, this will have to wait too:

Two additional outfielders; a third baseman; at least two additional pieces in the bullpen; an offensive bench that can actually create runs after the 6th inning; and, two additional MLB-level starters.

Other than that, we’re good to go! 😉

      • snarkk said, on November 21, 2017 at 6:18 pm

blade, I still think this Stanton thing is a bunch of hot air. I’ll believe it when it happens. Then, I won’t like it. I want more power, but not centered in just one guy. He’ll be an island in the lineup. He’ll hit 43 dingers and pull a muscle in the night cold at ATT, onto the DL a couple of times. Lots of fun watching him hit a jack towards the glove while they lose 5-2 because nobody else can hit, with Pence running out swinging bunts to third…

  14. snarkk said, on November 21, 2017 at 6:03 pm

All this talk about Giants and Stanton.
Lots of talk and tweets. Who benefits from that?
The Marlins – if they’re trying to build perceived competition that will conjure up a bigger and better deal with a Nemesis team negotiating with them in the dark. Celtics thought they had KD basically measuring for a green uni, then the Dubs went to the Hamptons to meet him, and look what happened…

    • blade3colorado said, on November 21, 2017 at 7:07 pm

I don’t want anything to do with Stanton, nor Cain or Martinez. We have too many holes to fill and spending it on one player is ludicrous. Cain is injury prone. Stanton and Martinez can barely field their position’s. This will be magnified at our park. Big, big mistake.

They need to address our already bloated, old overpaid roster; and continue to try and improve our minor league system.

      • snarkk said, on November 21, 2017 at 9:46 pm

        Amen…

  15. snarkk said, on November 21, 2017 at 6:14 pm

Giants claimed that Engelb cat off waivers in mid-Sept 2017 from Twins. He was your typical all glove no hit SS, with 2 HRs in over 2000 minor league ABs, and horrific bad other offensive splits. Giants probably just wanted a look see if whether the guy was the second coming of Agent 000. They must have gotten enough look seen 6 weeks and waived him…

  16. snarkk said, on November 21, 2017 at 6:32 pm

Dee Gordon got busted for PEDs.
Why would he be just fine, but Melky — nuh uh?…

    • blade3colorado said, on November 21, 2017 at 7:18 pm

One other thing – the delusion that the Giants “window” is still open with this wretched roster needs to be dispelled. We have sucked since the All Star game 2 seasons ago. Adding Stanton does little to turn our fortunes IMO.

  17. snarkk said, on November 21, 2017 at 6:46 pm

Braves getting hammered for bad behavior — lose a ton of their signed international FAs. Giants may have shot at some of these guys:

“ESPN will televise the Dodgers-Giants opener on Thursday, March 29, a 4 p.m. PT start, and will also showcase the series finale on ‘Sunday Night Baseball,’ a 5:30 p.m. PT start. Both will be exclusive telecasts by ESPN.
The games are part of 10 games televised by ESPN or ESPN2 over the first six days of the season, including four games on opening day. The first game of the 2018 season will feature the Marlins hosting the Cubs on March 29, a 9:30 a.m. PT start.
The 2018 season opens on a Thursday as part of the new, expanded regular season, now 187 days up from 183 to account for more rest days built into the new collective bargaining agreement.”

  23. willedav said, on November 21, 2017 at 7:44 pm

Stanton is fine, I object to Gordon/Panik. If you were going to trade Panik it would be for position of need. Plus over length of deal adds unnecessary $30 mil. Keep Panik and add another solid hitter to LU and pen depth.

I’m also not OK with Gorks in CF even with Stanton. Giants will already be worse than league average in LF and if it’s Arroyo sink or swim, at 3b. He might hit, but likely not for much power. That’s 3 out of 8 position players, plus bench.
So unless you go further over the lux tax cap and get another bat, 3rd place in division likely is ceiling.

Like the F/G guy said, Giants need more than Stanton.

    • Flavor said, on November 21, 2017 at 7:48 pm

you ain’t getting Stanton unless you take Gordon, too.

Speaking of whiffle ball, I had a massive 12/6 backyard whiffle ball curveball when I was 12-15 years old. Those half solid/half holes whiffle balls were dynamite for curves and slurves. I learned to hit a little LH’d using the whiffle ball bat. Did the Stretch windmill before the pitch, and BOOM, golfed those low pitches way off the top of the alder tree in the deep recesses of the backyard…

  31. snarkk said, on November 21, 2017 at 9:58 pm
