I want everyone here to be honest: if we get Stanton admit you will be ecstatic. Regardless of the hit to the farm system or the fractured future payroll, after watching Belt walk and Posey go the other way nearly every at bat last year, there has to be a little piece of you that would be totally stoked if we got Big Dick Stanton.

Big, big mistake. Stanton alone doesn’t even move the needle. Especially when you consider that Panik – one of the few bright spots last season – is part of the “rape trade” where we don’t get Gordon, but we get to eat most of Stanton’s contract. Ludicrous!
The only way this even might work, is if we get the “Japanese Babe Ruth” and add other necessary pieces to this POS roster. Fat chance. Nothing in the Giants history indicates that they’re willing to pay a 50% premium luxury tax on every dollar above $197 million . . . Stanton alone puts us at $215 million. Do the math.
Better yet, read this – it just about captures all of my feelings and misgivings about why this is one of the biggest risks the organization is ever going to take. Again, the ONLY way this even has a minutiae chance of succeeding – is if they go ALL in on other players (which means a hell of a lot of luck, insofar as Ohtani even wanting to don a Giants uniform and MONEY to score the other players we’ll need).

well I’d agree with the F/G guy that Stanton and Ohtani change things right away, especially if SPs rebound and cut runs allowed down significantly. And yes, Stanton is one of few guys around today I’d pay to watch hit.
I think it’s obvious Giants OF, those signed and recent farm system products, are underwhelming and less than even ml average. Other than trading off pieces someone might want, no other way to go about it outside of paying FAs like L Cain and/or T Frazier. Sucking this year and saving $$$ in hopes of landing Harper or Machado makes less sense to me than getting a legit power hitter now and filling in around him.
I know what Blade and Snarkk (and others) have said in the past. I just think that if it becomes a reality there will be part of them that is super stoked. We’ll see. Much like needing to see Billy Ham play every day with their own eyes, the true excitement for all Giants fans won’t come for Stanton until they see him in a uni. 🙂
Bonds was the end all power hitter, and the giants didn’t win a WS with him. Stanton will join a team with less offensive support than Bonds had in 2002. And a Pen of Swiss cheese compared to the core four that were key to the 2010 breakthrough that had no big power guy, just a bunch of timely hitting pros and a lock down start staff. Stanton provides ooh ah, until he gets walked or pulls 3 muscles in an icy June night game at ATT…
Well, if it turns into last year where they do little besides that one big move and sit on their hands, then we are fucked. Sure, it’ll be cool to see him. Until he breaks Barry Bonds’ 500 bb record.
We may win some games 17-14, but we’ll lose without help in a lot of other places.
I think Ohtani is the bigger PR move, BTW. I think he’d be more bang for the PR dollar anyway. Get ’em both and I’ll be excited. Till Oshit comes in and gives up a walk, a double and a home run.

I fully get the reasons against trading for Stanton. It just doesn’t bother me as much. With the 3 championships this decade already in hand, I don’t care if they do some crazy stuff now. Give me a more entertaining season than ’17 and I’ll be fine with it.
With Stanton, they do still need to add a cf.
The Trump tax cuts would easily pay for that. Find a positive use for those tax cuts before they eventually bring recession to the nation.

I’m bullish on 2018. They’ll need a plus defender in CF. Just can’t live with Sleepy Span’s clown show out there. I think the club, as currently constructed, can compete with the addition of Stanton. He moves Pence out of RF and Posey out of the clean up spot. Smith returns and the bullpen is better. I’m still tore up over my boy Cain’s suckage but Stratton will be better every 5th day and Bumgarner for the whole year will improve the starting pitching. Ultimately I think this group has 2 maybe 3 years left in their window to compete so spend the money. Get another ring. Bring on Stanton and there will be jizz.

– Padres have some young talent

The deal was done last week. Stanton’s either waiting to hear from the bums or trying to decide what to do after hearing that the bums aren’t interested. He’s in no hurry. Why should he be? (Maybe Barry Bonds convinced him to wait for the anniversary of the 92 Bonds announcement. Yeah, right.)
There might actually be something to that 25 year Bonds signing anniversary. I predict Stanton will be given #26 since he can’t have his #27 (or 28 or 24 or 25). The last Giant player to wear #26 was Jay Witasick in 2002. Maybe Gardner wears it now because it was his number as a player with them.
This team was gawd awful last season, that is well documented. As much as I would love to see him here, I agree with blade. If they have to give up what few prospects we have and take on that contract, this team will be hamstrung for years or at least until his opt out kicks in

Giants need fixes at 3rd and all OF positions. Stanton provides one hole filler and maybe enough HRs for 2 of the 3 OF spots. Fix at least 2 Pen roles , too. I’m probably forgetting something. With Stanton the 7-4 losses may be more enjoyable…
Actually 3 outfielders – even with Stanton. No one can convince me that he will be even half way decent in right field, He’s not a statue, but I don’t see where a 6’6” man can adequately field right field. Pence was a disaster out there last season . . . Does anyone think Stanton will be as good?
Couple that with finding a 3rd baseman, a 2nd baseman – Arroyo is a Hail Mary, 2 more pitchers (especially if they have to trade Smarge to address the luxury tax), and a bullpen rebuild.
Sorry, I’m not convinced old man Johnson is going to open up the bank vault beyond Stanton, unless other bad contracts to this POS roster are jettisoned and replaced with upgrades.

That’s true. With his no trade clause, he can wait until the cows come home. I suspect he’s still holding out hope for the Bums to swoop in and/or make a Hollywood production out of it at the MLB Winter meeting.
The Marlins aren’t going to give him away unless someone takes on the lion share of that contract. They’ll keep him before they just hand him over for a shit offer and then just trade him at the break next year when teams get more desperate.
Stanton isn’t a good fit for the Dodgers, I highly doubt they put together a deal that the Marlins want to accept. Stanton isn’t crazy, he’s not going to leverage the no trade clause for nothing and then get stuck in Miami till he can opt out in 2020. At least, I can’t see him doing that.

I am not in the camp that says getting Stanton would be a disaster for the team for years to come, but I completely agree that he *alone* would do nothing productive for the team, short- or long-term. If the team gets only him and then stops adding necessary pieces, that would just be stoopid. They’d be better off forgetting about him and spending the money on at least 2 significant OFers plus the other pieces. That said, getting him would be great. 🙂 As long as another OFer joins too.

Even now, just a decade since he was done, it seems a long time ago. HIs exploits were truly incredible when you look back on them. The guy just hardly ever missed crushing a strike when he was in those peak years. Stanton would generate some of those type vids next season at ATT, but after the Saran Wrap, that’s not enough to go from 98Ls to even a division win…

I have zero info/idea about this dude Bruce’s cred . . . If what he says is true, than the Giants haven’t lost all their marbles. Ohtani is the much, much, much better “brass ring” to grab. Far less expensive, younger, and intriguing skill set (pitching & hitting). Most important, it allows the Giants to address all their other deficiencies without the anchor of Stanton’s contract around their neck.
I would not mind taking a flyer on Ohtani. And, that’s what it would be. The guy is totally unproven and unknown how he’ll do in MLB. But, I’d rather check that out and roll the dice on a big upside than hamstring payroll and other player acquisition for 3 years, because that’s what will happen, then Stanton bails with his opt out; giving the Gyros three years of some Satan Wrap and then a nothing burger at the end…
Essentially, that’s my thinking as well. I count upwards of a dozen reasons why pursuing Stanton is a “fools errand.”
. . . and by the by, the Fan Graphs article I cited earlier indicates that the Giants currently project for fewer wins than the Marlins, who are intentionally trying to get worse. They are just a tick ahead of the Phillies and Reds, neither of whom are thinking about taking on $300 million in future contract commitments right now. With Stanton alone, it barely moves the needle – we gain 2 spots in the NL – going from 10th best to 8th. Big deal . . . as only 5 teams make the playoffs. Meh.

The point is not win totals (which I agree is impossible to predict, e.g., see Giants last season). No, the point is that Stanton barely moves the needle, especially for our hapless team. With the exception of Posey, Panic and Alphabet – all of our players flat out sucked or were mediocre.
Worse, Panic may be part of the Stanton trade and Alphabet may have to be traded to ensure the luxury tax hit isn’t astronomical.

The front office is not making this deal to make the team necessarily better or championship quality (off course adding the MVP who just bashed 59 homers in a new juiced ball era obviously improves the team just with his presence), they are worried about putting butts in the stands. With an aging lineup, weak farm system and a manager end of his run, it is not inconceivable without Stanton or Ohtani for those nightly sellouts turn into 25,000 turning out. That is about 1 million less fans and what a conservative loss of $50 mill in ticket revenue???
That is what frightens the front office…there is not going to be a tear down as other organizations have done like the Cubs and Astros…and also why they are willing to do anything they can to make the deal with Stanton, even when it seems obvious that he still prefers the Fodgers.
As I said the other day, the one thing I fear is that Giancarlo forces the Giants to add in a second year opt out. Because he obviously takes it and heads to LA.
I still dont think Arroyo is in the deal. I think the first report of Beede, Panik and Shaw seemed to be right in the ballpark. I cannot see Arroyo or Ramos being added. If we dont have to swallow Dee Gordon, then obviously Panik is not in the deal, but I am then not happy about adding Arroyo. Ramos fine. Arroyo is closer to being a big leaguer. If Stanton forces a 2nd year opt out then I say F You, Beede is not going, choose Blach or Stratton. Giants actually have all the leverage here because it is clear Giancarlo does not want to go to St. Louis and Fodgers have no deal on the table as Giancarlo and his reps are trying to get the Fodgers to engage.
Fodgers probably have the clear hint that he will likely opt out in 3 years if not 2 if that gets put on the table and Fodgers in much better financial shape in 2-3 years to avoid a major luxury tax hit they would take now if they trade for him now.
Plus the Fodgers would have to give up zero prospects if he opted out down the road. I hope we don’t get stuck with the 2nd year opt out. I think we would with Ohtani and Stanton, plus the ability in 2019 to add in a Donaldson, maybe another OF to replace Pence/Spam unless one of our kids steps up, and beefing up the bullpen (of course there would need to be Bum and Ohtani extensions) a 2 year window through 2020 to won a World Series. Then if Stanton walks then great. We would have $200 million saved for those extensions…

Now, before you say, “That would never happen to Giancarlo, remember that Howard was put on a pedestal back than too. He hit 58 bombs when he was 26. He continued to be a stud until age 30-31, then pfffttt. Sure, you can argue that Howard played in a bandbox, but he was outstanding until and fortunate for him, scored a monster contract before going kaput.
Nope, I don’t see Stanton opting out of that gift contract. In fact, we have recent experience with this type of contract – see Cueto.
Consensus is if Stanton does well here yes he opts out. Because then he could choose whomever he wants to play for (unlike today) and tell teams they can redo the contract, so make me an offer I can’t refuse.
Cueto was hamstrung by injuries and underperforming 2017. Couple more good years, Stanton rules and can play for whatever team/deal pleases him.
Me? I’m praying he does well here and opts out after 2 seasons. This isn’t Alex Rodriguez, much less Barry Bonds we’re talking about. He’s injury prone, coupled with a large body – which rarely translates to a long baseball career. As GH and Snarkk alluded to – this is just a PR move to put butts in the seats. You’ll be cheering his HRs no doubt, but a couple of innings later jeer his defense in right field I suspect.

Blade, why I think Stanton is pushing for a 2nd year opt-out. I think he likely has 2 big years coming and look after 2018, Machado, Harper, Blackmon and Donaldson all as free agents. Machado and Harper are likely getting bigger contracts than Stanton. He would be the biggest bad-ass free agent the next year and see no way Fodgers do not jump all over him and Stanton knows it…
I just disagree Stanton barely moves the needle. He is a decent RF and immediately changes entire LU from opponents perspective, much like adding a Cespedes would have. And he can carry a team when he gets hot.
However…Giants appear to be league average for hitters at SS 2b already, and likely below average in LF. Even if they can keep Arroyo, I doubt he is .750 OPS type hitter, so there’s another soft spot. CF has to be a position they fill with a legit 500 AB everyday .800 OPS type hitter ala L Cain. Ohtani might fill that spot too, just more questions about adjusting to NL ball and how much pitching he does.
Flav has a good point too. I like F/G but most everything they do is based on WAR, a 2 win player yada yada is worth x amount of $$$. It’s a flawed stat to begin with especially for D, and using it to project what will happen going forward is a crapshoot.

Hasn’t been good preseason for Pac 12, but man Maples nuts will have field day with that one. Of course Haase 4-6 team has gone 1-2 in their battles vs. the Big Sky conference.
I’m having a hard time getting into Cardinal basketball with all the 1-done schools out there. Trying to field a quality team of kids who actually want to go to school (in NCAA bball) is nearly impossible anymore. I miss the days of Mark Madsen….
to be fair to Haase, he’s missing a guy he counted on in Pickens, and lost a promising recruit (okpala) who has guard skills and grew to 6-8 as a HS senior to some academic issues still being sorted out while he is in class.
They still struggle to be consistent with 3 young players who often start/get big minutes.
Bottom line Pac 12 may not be all it’s cracked up to be, so couple good Ws in league could turn it around for them. And there are some schools that still have good players stick around. I think they benefit quite a bit from maturing physically and in terms of b-ball IQ gained from years of experience and practice.
Stanton will opt out, likely, if he’s still putting up 50 bombs a year AND he still wants to go to LA in 2020.
I wouldn’t compare Stanton with Cueto, 2 dudes with completely different body types and training habits.
Wherever the “it’s all about the pitching” went, it’s near the place where the GOP’s “family values” ended up…
Nothing was said publicly but I think FO is disappointed guys like Moore and the kids in pen struggled so much last year under Rags et al. Interesting to see what new coaching staff brings to equation and if they are able to add quality depth to what they have in pen.
As has been pointed out before, AZ big turnaround featured dramatic decrease in runs allowed btw 2016/2017.
This will have to be big part of any Giants turnaround too and I think it’s entirely possible given full healthy years from Bum Cueto FLR and Melancon.
SF is still strong defensively up middle (3 spots anyway) and at 1b. Fix CF and you are on your way. No way Stanton is worse than Pence out there.
Regarding WAR, I was mystified when Scutaro was deemed a 2.0 WAR rating for 2012. Seriously? Any Giants fans believe that Scutaro was only worth 2 more wins than a replacement level player that season? That’s ridiculous. WAR has some flaws to it.
Scutaro’s first half numbers in 2012 were pretty mediocre; second half, tremendous (particularly after joining the Giants). So a WAR 2 overall makes sense. WAR’s a very good gauge–best overall stat there is, I guess–but it’s only good in context. (Nonetheless, I would not be upset if mlb chose the AS teams every July based solely on WAR by position. 😉 )
With the Giants nothing is a done deal.

According to the reporting, Marlins had agreed to eat $45 mill of Stanton’s deal…so if $11 mill of it is eating Spam’s salary, what is the difference??? They save $14 mill immediately…
Dee Gordon gets $10M in 2018 and over $13M in 2019 and 2020. Can you imagine loading up that on top of Stanton?

He apparently pleads astonishment that a woman employee might consider the “request” weird and offensive in an employer / staff situation.

He had tweeted a trade offer from Giants for Stanton. I don’t think anyone has said Stanton is going to the Giants. BTW, I’m a little skeptical over some of this tweet-porting, but if it’s interesting enough like the above, I’ll post it.

The touted Laney College site is now a total “no go” from the College trustees, so the A’s are back to square one. How they got to touting the site as essentially set is beyond me.
I don’t get it. The Raiduhs are leaving for Vegas. The Dubs are leaving for Mission Bay in SF. So, the A’s have the entire Coliseum site to themselves in 2 years to build a new baseball park. Or, just knock down Mt. Davis and re-furbish the Coliseum. The BART connection right there is invaluable. The A’s could develop the rest of the site for mixed use in partnership with the City. It’s so logical, so obvious. They could have Baer run the real estate for them…
A year from now, maybe 2 years, all Flappers will release a sigh of relief that the Giants didn’t sign Stanton (despite our FO’s best efforts to hamstrung this organization for the next decade).
Now, let’s see if they get serious about rebuilding this franchise and forget this nonsense about this “faux” reloading for 2018.
Despite Stanton preferring 4 other teams over the Cards and Giants, the GMen still have a very slim chance of still landing Stanton (God forbid). Stanton indicates that he might reconsider, should the Giants sign Ohtani.
Laughable in my opinion, as the international signing bonus pool allotment the Mariners received in the Gordon deal boosted the amount they can offer Ohtani to a major league-high $3,557,500, just ahead of the Rangers ($3,535,000). Consequently, I think they’re a shoo-in to sign him.
