Wednesday!
I was too young to remember much about George Moscone getting killed but I do remember it causing lots of hysteria. Ed Lee died and all I’m seeing and hearing is some half hearted sentiments like “bummer, Ed Lee was a really good guy.” I guess the circumstances of the Moscone/Milk deaths were different and that was the reason for the *hysteria*. What do you guys remember most about that event?
Sounds like Ohtani has a damaged ulnar ligament. That’s probably not the worst thing in the world, he’s young and if he needs replacement surgery that’s almost something that makes a guy better now. The Angels probably aren’t too stoked.
The rise and fall of the Roman . . . ahem, San Francisco Giants empire.
This guy captures my 2018 doomerism perfectly; or as he states at the end of his column: “So I’m thinking maybe it’s time to start the conversation about what the Giants’ needs will be in 2019.”

Dan White and twinkie defense. DiFi takes over, sworn in while wearing one of her bow outfits. Interesting to see how the moderate/progressive battle shakes out, who wants to be mayor, yada yada. Thankless job tho.
Brisbee has good column on B/H. Unfortunately, as well as he did vs. SF his numbers vs. everyone else: .240 BA with .590 OPS. When you compare unfavorably with Gorkys Hernandez as a hitter, you got major issues.
On a team where he could be late game p/r (for someone who actually got on base) and D replacement when you have the lead, fine. But here (without JD and Machado) he only makes a bad LU worse.
Im not laughing but maybe Giants not getting Ohtani is the last laugh…

Recent physical shows Angels’ Shohei Ohtani has a damaged elbow ligament
I remember clearly the afternoon of the Moscone amd Harvey Milk assassination after getting out of middle school sitting in my mom’s car, I guess I was around 11, and listening to the radio while she was in Lucky’s.
And hearing rhe news reports, I thought the assassin was still loose and I was sitting in a car about to be next. The Twinkie defense still outlandish and that bastard has essentially been free running around in Idaho.
Great story
Thanks it was a horrifying day…
Dan White has been dead since 1985…
Thank God…I thought Inread otherwise recently about him being pardoned. Cause? Twinkies I hope…
Suicide, I think…
Forget about triples too. S Finley came here from AZ and blasted them (complaining all the while they were HRs in AZ for him year before) and so did Belt and Craw 2 yrs ago when they were in double figures.
Nunez? 0 the entire season with Giants last year, and it has little to do with speed–it’s because he couldn’t hit the ball far enough to deep part of yard. BH hit 3 HRs in tiny bandbox warm weather Cincy, he doesn’t have the power for it at ATT either.
He is RH unlike the 3 guys u listed
BH could hit a triple to deep short
Damn, Pat DiNizio has died, lead singer for cool, fun Jersey band The Smithereens.
Re Moscone: I seem to remember he was shot the same day the 49ers were home for a Monday Night Football game, vs. the Steelers?
My fraternity at Kentucky actually hired them for a party in 1991…true story.
I’ve seen Hamilton & Duvall linked as part of a deal with SF. Sweet, Jesus. That would be peak Booby.
Please no….bandaids on top of bandaids on top of festering wounds…
The Giants scored 3.94 runs per game last season so I imagine the front office is thinking better defense in CF along with improved performance at the plate from Crawford & Belt will nudge them over their magic metric of 4 runs per game. Not saying I think that is a good plan but it is probably what they’re going to do. Fortunately, it is looking like the market’s lack of interest in anyone but Ramos will force the club to rebuild.
We need power hitters says Bochy as of course Ozuna is dealt to the Cards ..
If not reported here yet.. Ozuna to the bloody Cards…
haven’t seen the deal yet but they have the prospects to get it done. I’m assuming they paid a high price
Yeah, that was a dark day in SF history. I remember seeing the bodies of Moscone and Milk coming out of City Hall on TV, and Diane Feinstein’s tearful shocked announcement.
The bigger thing to come out of it was the Twinkie defense, and the subsequent riots that erupted in the Castro that rolled on for a couple days when Dan White was cleared of premeditated murder and was instead charged witn voluntary manslaughter. His 5 year term was a joke. Luckily he took care of himself.
And of course, this hideous thing. If you look close, you can see the twinkie embedded in the front of this.
And I dont see any peep about talking to the Yankees about Frazier or any young stud. We know the Yanks need a 2b. Panik is a New Yorker and very reasonable contract and controllable.
We ain’t doing anything because we can’t. Barring the slash and burn that ain’t their style.
Hey, I’m just hoping the Niners can win 3 in a row.
Good piece from Baggarly at The Athletic on the Giants and the CBTax problem. They’re not the only team trying to get things under control now. The CBT is scheduled to end in 2021, apparently, so getting under the threshold for one year now would minimize $$ and draft pick penalties for a couple of years until the tax vanishes. In other words, they have a strong incentive to pinch pennies now as they try to fill the obvious 2018 holes. If Stanton had ok’d the deal here, maybe the Giants would’ve blown by the CBT again. Without him, it looks like the pennies are going to be screaming in pain.
Yep, SF does not have the minor league assets to compete on trades for talent like Ozuna. How is it that the Carda and Doghairs that are in the playoffs year after year continue to spot and draft and sign MLB quality talent and restock; but the Giants with basically more or equivalent resources, and drafting higher, can’t do that. Kurkjian the other night basically said the Giants minor leagues is in shambles. At least we’ve got Bell now to lead the minor league ops, hopefully with authority to kick ass and take names…
Yeah Snarkk you can’t go to the high roller tables with 5 dollar chips, and that’s where the Giants are at..
Sure didn’t take Billionare Joe Lacob long to turn the Dubs into a powerhouse organization when they were a joke for years,he didn’t just sit back and collect revenue like Cohen use to with no involvement with the team, this guys a go getter, not like the billionaire Giants investors who are clueless!
Giants could use a guy like him cause he would immediately be Proactive not like the slugs in control now..
Very sad to hear about DiNizio. The Smithereens were just a good solid band, doing good work, and just plugging away, never getting super famous, but always putting on a good show. They probably never achieved greatness, if I want to be picky about it, but I always found them enjoyable to listen to, and saw them give a great show at the Warfield, at the height of their popularity.
The opening act was two guys who called themselves The Two “Three Stooges.” I always remembered that name.
When my friends and I first saw the Smithereens on TV we were kind of amused by DiNizio’s hipster little beard. But we loved the sound of the band from the get-go. I liked the lead guitar player’s cool Rickenbacker (all Rickenbacker’s are cool), and he played fairly simple but good rockin’ guitar solos.
The lead guitar player looks like he could be a Belushi brother.
Cards dealt Alcantara as their prime chip then their #13 prospect and two far lesser pieces. We could not do better than that???
Beede and Shaw is a better package on paper. But of course as we all are starting to smell it out, mgmt is looking to do little. For Ozuna, they could not make a run at him??? Ridiculous. I am calling it right now that Ozuna will be the MVP and Cards will be in the playoffs. While the Giants sit on their hands…
Someone on the Mlb radio channel started the broadcast off tonight saying absolutely nothing is happening of interest at the winter meetings…just great for us Giant fans…
Unless your interests are free food, booze and gay sex…
Lol Loo!
I can see a 3 way easily with Booby&Sabes, and Crazy Larry !
“Since they can’t close a deal
They might as well seal a meal!”
Posey’s lack of power has been alarming for quite a while.
Hey, with the Marlins going all in on their fire sale, maybe the Giants won’t be the worst team in the NL next season.
Doesn’t Jeter only own 4% of the team?
Is he making all the decisions?
He’s running the Yankees, southern division…
Even when the Giants sucked from 1972-1985, they would still surprise you every few seasons with a decent year out of nowhere. That might be the best we can hope for…
those teams were filled with a bunch of plucky rooks and vet castoffs, not a bunch of guys making a shitload of $$$$. But I get your point.
Recent footage of DiNizio surprised me. He had put on a LOT of weight. A totally different-looking guy. Maybe he had some kind of glandular disorder.
Sorry to hear of his passing. The Smithereens were always one of my favorites of that era. No cause of death is being given as of right now.
Sucks that the Giants couldn’t put something together for Ozuna. It’s not like they needed a slugging outfielder anyway. Maybe they go for Yelich? Right now this is shaping up as a another shit off season for the boys in orange and black.
So I’m seeing here and hearing on radio that Cards did NOT have to give away a lot of top minor league talent to get Osuna. Were the Giants even in the mix on that? This is what is so maddening. A month of Stanton BS when the giants and cards had no shot. Then the cards shake off the Stanton diss and get to work immediately and close on a very good plan B pickup. Our FO suxxx, unless proved otherwise in short order…
that is weird that they gave up such an average package for Ozuna.
I wish Evans were that weird…
From some of the posts today, I’m glad to see The Smithereens’ music extended well beyond the Garden State. As a friend of mine said today, they really dug and were very much influenced by The Beatles and The Who, and they once did all of “Tommy” for an album.
Nice!
A lot of this article is pap from Schulman.
But, at least it sounds like the FO understands that the farm system is merde, and needs serious care and feeding under Bell…
