Evans Plan of *Do Nothing* in Full Swing

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on December 14, 2017

Take another outfielder off the board. The A’s swooped in and swiped Piscotty Too Hotty. I might be a little more partial to him than others with him being a former member of The Farm. But it isn’t too hard to improve on the vaunted outfield of Pence, Spam, Slater, Dugger, hologram, etc…

While I’m typing this intro, there’s an ad on tv of some dope surprising his high maintenance lady with a car draped with a giant-ass red bow. This is the most annoying Christmas ad on tv, by far, bar none…..

I habe not bothered reading anything about Machado as it would be laughable for the Giants to be deemed a player. I woke up in the middle of the night so was checking on any trade updates and decided to read about who is in play for Machado and lo and behold there is a story that has the Giants offering Arroyo.

As you read further into the story it looks like the asking price from the Orioles is two top pitching prospects. I am not taking a one year rental (does anyone here actually think Machado would ever sign a long-term deal with us) and giving up Beede and Arroyo….but if it is Arroyo and Stratton and a lesser pitcher I am willing to listen. I would maybe offer Blach and Stratton and a lesser arm/prospect. Orioles would have potentially two starters…who is offering that among other teams???

I hate those commercials! Who buys someone a Lexus for Christmas? I guess someone buys into the hype

From all that I’ve read and heard, the giants have one person that anyone wants (Ramos) and it seems like they would be foolish to give him up for someone who would only be around for a year or two. Like you said yesterday We’re screwed and will be for the foreseeable future.

I know that it’s been discussed ad infinitum, but they it’s time for Laurence to make it rain pink slips in that front office Booby, Sabes, and Boch need to go. The Giants desperately need some fresh blood making decisions. This team is going to be terrible for a long time, may as well start the process now. And maybe within 5 years this team can be competitive again. Some semblance of a long term plan would be nice.

I would think Machado would not be part of any trade unless team acquiring him makes him an offer he can’t refuse and has something in writing that he’ll be around for a few years. No idea what that would be yrs/$$$.
Of course, like in Stanton deal, likely an opt out in there somewhere.
    Thoughts?

Yep, the Evans “Do Nothing” plan is being executed flawlessly. Meanwhile, the plan I proposed of getting rid of most, if not all our “dead wood” a la the Detroit Tigers gathers dust in some file drawer at Willie Mays Plaza.

The Tigers’ run as a plausible contender ended with a thud last season (like us) and they began looking toward the future, trading Justin Upton, star pitcher Justin Verlander and slugging outfielder J.D. Martinez before September. Yesterday, they traded Kinsler (who was obtained in the Prince Fielder trade) to the Angels for more prospects.

One team (Tigers) that sees the writing on the wall . . . and another team (Giants) that’s delusional.

Giants fans can’t help but be cynical about all these times the Giants “are in on” signing big name free agents, but then falling short. It does seem like stuff just to keep us fans thinking the Giants at least tried to get them. Meanwhile the real plan is do not much of anything and just hope everybody plays better next season. The “big hope” plan.
Austin Jackson is a free agent. He seems like the kind of player the Giants will sign later in the off-season.

    • zumiee said, on December 14, 2017 at 8:01 am

We are so finishing last in the NL West in 2018. Really the Giants might as well do the big tear-down rebuild rather than just do nothing. We’re going to finish in last place anyway. What’s the big goal, just to avoid 100 losses again?

      • blade3colorado said, on December 14, 2017 at 8:15 am

Yes, that seems to be the goal.

As I alluded to in my post above and previous posts – the Giants have no farm system; or, at least very few prospects that are worth much to other teams. This has been unequivocally confirmed by us being ignored by the Marlins, Ohtani, and in the case of Stanton – he rightly pegged our team as also rans.

Consequently, we have 2 choices: 1. Continue the Do Nothing Plan; or, 2. Trade Bum, Posey, Belt, Smarg, Cueto, Moore, Crawford, etc. (some or all of them) for prospects/younger players or reduce payroll.

Number 2 won’t happen though with this regime . . . So yes, we’re fucked.

      • snarkk said, on December 14, 2017 at 9:36 am

IMO, after 3 in 5, you have to take you lumps for the bad FO management afterwards. Bleed out these bad deals, but meanwhile fix the minors. A couple of years of fair to middling ball while generating minor league supply is better than a decade of crap, as you try to mask the bad news…

    • gianthead said, on December 14, 2017 at 10:23 am

Zum, no one in baseball wants Belt or Crawford, to say the least of Pence and Spam. Bumgarner is going to be a hall of famer…I want him to be a lifetime Giant. None of those Tigers are. I have been a proponent of trading Posey for a while but I dont trust this mgmt to get maximum return…

  6. willedav said, on December 14, 2017 at 8:17 am

Kinda funny but just read something on F/G that was bandied about by Loo and GH–Giants trading Smrdz to Yanks for Ellsbury Frazier and maybe one more piece/take one more contract off Giants hands.
Ellsbury does have no trade clause. Seems like neither of these 2 would play much for NY and Smrdz adds innings eater that according to column puts them over top with best SP rotation in all of baseball.

  7. unca_chuck said, on December 14, 2017 at 8:53 am

Bummie, Samarj, Panik, and Cueto are our only tradeable pieces. Belt, Crawford, Pence, and Posey are all on deals that no one wants to take on, and we won’t eat. Shit, look at Rowand. He stayed about 1.5 years past his expiration date.

The flip side of it is if we had given up on Zito when most thought he was toast, we wouldn’t have made it through the 2012 playoffs, but really he was the outlier. I’m pretty sure that this may very well turn into last year where they just turn into background noise and I don’t really pay attention. I’ll watch but I won’t be fully invested in it. If they can’t build a contending team, and they’ve made a shit-load of missteps lately, then why give up my time?

The overarching pisser to this is, teams get stuck with onerous contracts all the time. They seemed like a good idea at the time, and end up having to dump payroll, but the issue is the dogshit minor leagues. What happened? Did they all forget their jobs? Sure it’s hard to hit them all the time, but they haven’t drafted a viable outfielder in decades. The worthless guys they’ve either brought in or drafted have been God-awful. There’s little hope now. Because these guys will ride Posey, Crawfish, and Bummie to the bitter end. So even if they nail the next 3 drafts, and cut the core loose we’re looking at 2021 as our new window?

    Yay!

  8. dirtnrocksnomo said, on December 14, 2017 at 9:22 am

AZ picked up Suarez in the rule 5 draft. Sort of surprised that the Giants exposed him. Probably because they’re not planning on doing jack shit this off season.

What’s the big deal about the Lexus commercial? You guys don’t buy a car for your woman every Christmas?

  9. unca_chuck said, on December 14, 2017 at 9:29 am

“Merry Christmas, honey, I sold the kids into sex slavery, took out a 2nd mortgage on the house, and robbed a bank! ! Here’s your new $95,000 car!”

  10. snarkk said, on December 14, 2017 at 9:33 am

The horrendous farm system cupboard is the elephant in the room. Any trade partner will put the screws to the Giants to pick off what minimal top talent we have, or no dice. Giants in a bad negotiating position from every direction. Chuck is right — where have these guys been the last five years or so in managing the minor leagues? The lack of a true MLB outfielder not even one, developed in 20 years is the canary in the coal mine. Has ANY other MLB team whiffed like that on an entire position type that is so key to consistent success? The problem comes home to roost when you’ve got nada to trade to get somebody else’s OFers, unless those other OFers suck and/or have albatross deals…

I’ve been digging those flex seal commercials. Dude fixes up his boat with a spray and then takes it out on the water. That’s believing in your product!

    • snarkk said, on December 14, 2017 at 9:50 am

Is there some Rejuvo spray they can apply to Span and Pence?..

I don’t know but I’m pretty sure there are some creams available.

The monstrous thing our consumer/corporate culture has turned Christmas gift-giving into is grotesque. I was thrilled with the humble modest gifts my parents got me for Christmas. A Major Matt Mason action figure! Very rockin’ Christmas gift.

Another great gift was Creepy Crawlers with Now for sure illegal toxics smoking up your bedroom making these creatures out of molded plates! I was the mad scientist of the block as the toxic smells bellowed out my windows…

What frustartes me is not necessarily the Gianfucko development or Ozuna getting at least maybe the #1 Cards prospect that appears much more of a sure thing than Beede, but it is watching players like Piscotty being picked up for lesser prospects.

We should be grabbing as much cheap, young hitting talent that is on the trade market. If Grichuk is available, make a move. Clint Frazier, make a move. Grab as much talent as you can for little cost financially…

    • Flavor said, on December 14, 2017 at 11:28 am

agreed but it is an indication of how other teams view our prospects. Either that, or Evans just isn’t talking to the other GMs

      • gianthead said, on December 14, 2017 at 1:02 pm

remember the year Sabathia was a free agent leaving Cleveland and we had a need for a top line starter in many of our minds, as the Winter Meetings were held, it came out that Sabean did not even bother meeting with him and his reps.

I get the feeling mgmt is now just trying to give appearances of doing something while they are doing nothing. I dont see any evidence they engaged the Cards on Piscotty or Grichuk or Yanks and Frazier or others? Did not sound like they made much effort on Ozuna either. What exactly have they been doing in Orlando??? There was even a story the Giants were pulling away from the Reds on Hamilton and Duval, which I am fine with.

Pav is tweeting that SF has interest in this guy from the White Sox. I have no confidence in Booby pulling it off but i’d be down with that.

So mgmt pursuing the strategy of “Hey Look Over Here.”

And I of course forgot to note that what the Giants will ultimately settle on is our new left-fielder….Jose Bautista…

Only thing Larry Baer will PR next year is Booby Evans bobblehead night!
Actually he could have one too along with Sabes for the 3 stooges bobble head lock for extra promotion giveaways!!!

    Can you say Andre Ethier?

  21. unca_chuck said, on December 14, 2017 at 1:40 pm

    Understatement of the millennium:

“It’s fair to say our system is not as strong as we’d like it to be, and it does sometimes cost us deals,” general manager Bobby Evans said Wednesday. “That’s reality.”

Sometimes? The next reality is you out of a job.

“Some of those guys might not be there in 2018. Though the Giants are resisting trade demands for their top prospects, they might have to relent as the offseason progresses”…..Evans

Chuck, this is a quote from the article you referenced. It seems to me that Evans sounds rather delusional. And this is the guy to lead us out of the wilderness???!!

    My solution:
    1. Trade Bum and anybody that teams want for prospects (position players mostly).
    2. Whoever selected draft picks for the past 5 years- -do not let them in the building on draft day.
    3. Move LF in about 30 feet from the Cars.
    4. Prepare everyone that sellouts are over for the foreseeable future.
    5. Move Bochy to the front office in charge of scouting future opponents.
    6. Hire a manager with no experience other than being a recent player.
    7. Give away a car a week. (All paid attendees get a lottery ticket for that week. Next week a new lottery for fans of that week.)
    8. For remote fans like me- -come back in five years if you are still alive.

  23. blade3colorado said, on December 14, 2017 at 5:13 pm

I would take any 3 Flappers running this POS Front Office over the 3 stooges (nod to AK) – particularly snarkk, Wilco, and Sarge – doing what snarkk said earlier . . .

“Bleed out these bad deals, but meanwhile fix the minors. A couple of years of fair to middling ball while generating minor league supply is better than a decade of crap, as you try to mask the bad news.”

    • snarkk said, on December 14, 2017 at 6:12 pm

Hey, we three could put our heads together and phuck it up as well as Evans. At least we’d make some moves. Baer would have to be in a holding cell somewhere for a month while we dismantle the team…

Once in a blue moon do I visit a Twitter page, much less my own Twitter page. Why?

I just spent 4-5 minutes at her brain dead, egotistical, air head page and I have only 2 things to say . . . I hope Beede is traded to the Kansas City Royals or Minnesota Twins or some minor league purgatory; and, I want the missing 5 minutes of my life back.

  25. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on December 14, 2017 at 5:42 pm

Just curious: I moved to SF from Boston in August of ’96, just in time to watch the Giants finish last in the West that year. Didn’t really know in-depth what had been happening with the team for the year or two before that. Suddenly pre-’97 season, Sabean comes in, makes that big trade (the only one that I’m familiar with at that time), and the Giants win the division. Worst to first, and all that. How did that “turnaround” happen so quickly? I’m guessing the team wasn’t horrendous in finishing last in ’96, not like now, but still. Just wondering.

    • xoot said, on December 14, 2017 at 6:22 pm

Bonds and Williams couldn’t carry the team. Sabean actually joined the Giants in 93 as asst gm when the new owners hired Quinn to be gm. Quinn got fired and Sabean promoted after 96. The Matt Williams trade was big, but look also at the success Sabean had drafting compared to Quinn

    • Macdog said, on December 14, 2017 at 6:48 pm

Getting JT Snow for Allen Watson also helped.

    • xoot said, on December 14, 2017 at 9:07 pm

And in addition to Jeff Kent, Vizcaino was good in 1997 while Aurilia got ready to take over. Rich A hadn’t been able to do much in 96.

  26. snarkk said, on December 14, 2017 at 7:02 pm

Giants are in similar situation as Raiduhs whe Darth Al passed on, except no recent 3 in 5. Aging players, bloated contracts, little depth, salary cap hell. Only here it is lux tax “problem”. It took Reggie 3+ seasons to bleed out the deadwood, hire and fire a new coach, hire another one, get lucky on a few draft picks, and actually get to playoffs. It was painful getting back to being competitive, and even now they’ve backslid …
