Rejected Again
I’m dying to know what the Giants offered Jay Bruce. Bob Nightingale said they went “hard” after him. So either they offered more than 3/39 and he rebuffed them because he didn’t want to play for a 98 loss team or their offer was less than 3/39–hardly going “hard” after a player of his caliber.
Much like Longoria, I didn’t want SF to get Bruce because I really liked him, I wanted them to get him because he makes our team a little better. And 13 mil a year is Spam $$$. That’s nearly pocket change.
The moment after the Giants picked up Longo the only course of action from here on out was pedal to the metal. Get ANYONE who will make the team better and hope for some bounce back seasons from the guys on the pitching staff.
There is no other direction than full steam ahead, mateys.
And my understanding is that Mets gave him just $10 mill in year one…if the Giants went 4 years $50 he is easily a Giant and likely someone who would have loved being a Giant.
So therefore they “went hard” and probably would not go beyond 2 years….we know what the mgmt is dealing us fans and it is a whole lot of nothing..
Well, there are a lot of other options out there. They certainly aren’t in panic mode yet and frankly jay Bruce is not a “must have” especially since he’s LH
I’m a little surprised. I didn’t get the feeling Bruce liked New York very much.
You either have to be insane or extremely patient to drive to Citifield…
The problem is, ‘full steam ahead’ is being done with 4 broken paddles and a leaky boat.
I’m fine with missing on Bruce who is just more of what the club doesn’t need – old & left handed. I guess I would feel better about it if I had any confidence in Booby to trade for a good young player. This off season has played well for the club’s typical slow approach but I fully expect them to be left out in the cold again.
More than any other position, they still need CF. Preferably one that can hit as well as cover ground.
Who?
Has to be better hitter than Hamilton or Dyson or Lagares or Yanks guy they are trying to salary dump. I’d settle for Grichuk off Cards and figure out who can back him up not named Gorkys. There are guys on Stros too like Marisnick that might not fit into their ultimate plans.
Cards also have good prospects and so do Yanks.
Schulman tweet last night::
#SFGiants offered Bruce three years at less money, but I never got the sense they were hot on his trail. Bruce wanted to come here, but remember when Evans said just a few weeks ago he was going to reach out to Bruce? Pretty late in the game. Might prefer trading for a RFer.
everyone knows what this guy knows. McCutchen, however, on top of Longoria? Two great players very probably past their prime? That’s taking a lot of risk for the money. I won’t be surprised to see cheap players move through the OF in 2018 the way they did through 2B in 2014.
this guy: https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/01/10/jay-bruce-mets-contract-san-francisco-giants-andrew-mccutchen-trade-free-agency-agent-rumors-news-pittsburgh-pirates-new-york-mets-mlb/
I’m happy we missed on Bruce. I bet he didn’t really want to come here because of our wacky ballpark.
Sign a CF, please. I’m still hot for Cain. A team in pedal to the metal mode shouldn’t give a rip about losing a couple of draft picks. I haven’t been following this stuff. Are Cain, Dyson, Carlos Gomez and Jackson all still available?
I still think SF could swing a deal with Cards or Astros to provide some pen help both could use (Strick maybe) and pick up one of their surplus CFs or decent prospect they could try out there.
Sandog, pretty sure they’re all still out there. Disagree on the picks. The club needs to add talent to the farm or will become (as if they aren’t already) a version of the late 80s – early 90s Yankees.
Funny column on F/G titled, “What if Baseball had a Penalty Box?” Goes to state premise for minor (and major/misconduct) penalties, where a team would have to play 3 outs minus a defender for throwing at a guy, taking out someone on a slide etc.
It is a cool thing about hockey, having to play shorthanded or having man advantage for 2/4/5 minutes. Not sure how it would transition to baseball, but kinda funny concept.
Why can’t freaking Booby atleast call the Brewers about Centerfielder Keon Broxton?
Guys got untapped power, speed to burn, great defense only 27 with a cheap contract!!
Oh shit I forgot it’s Booby that’s beyond his mindset…
pretty reliable source at KNBR
I have a bad feeling that’s just not right.
In other words, I suspect the “all in” slogan does not at all describe what the Giants FO is up to. Also, I have doubts about Cain’s durability. He’s 31; Longoria’s 32. Longoria has a solid record but he may be due for some problems., Cain’s record is not really solid. e.g.: https://www.royalsreview.com/2017/2/16/14135840/2016-season-in-review-lorenzo-cain
Both of those guys in LU is risky way of going all in.
All-in or all-old?
This is pretty awesome
Don’t know the ball park, but in a normal park, from the edge of the warning track that’s about a 310 foot throw on a string. I think Puig can make that throw today, maybe Cespedes, too, on a good day now…
a younger Ichiro would be in the group
here’s some recent data. Puig’s high on the list.

I’m skeptical….
““It’s not a hard cap for the Giants,” Schulman said. “They want to stay under it, but [Brian] Sabean and [Bobby] Evans are not under a restriction that they absolutely have to. I think that as they get down to the brass tacks at the end of the offseason and they see that their only option to fix the outfield, that right now doesn’t have a whole lot of major league experience out there, is to go over the figure, they’ll have to go over the figure.””
I would be shocked they make moves that end up having them over the lux tax cap. If they stay under this season, the thing resets for next season. If they don’t, it gets even more punitive next season to go over it…
if all they do is add Longo and then still trot out that absurd outfield next year, it will be a spectacular failure of an off season. I can’t believe they are completely incompetent right now so I have to believe that more moves are coming.
Reportedly several teams have invited rapper 50 Cent to throw out a first pitch this season to give him a chance to do better than his infamous first try. He likes the idea.
His first try:
i’d give him a standing offer to throw out the first pitch EVERY GAME. I’d pay him whatever he wants. This guy is at the highest comedy level with this shit. they could set up like 10 catchers (fans) positioned around and loosely near the plate. Whoever caught the “pitch” gets free tickets to the next game or something. It could be a great promo
I thought that was a vid of a Matt Moore warm up…
On this bad first pitch, I love the mascot’s reaction:
Same reaction of the Cincy catcher in 2012 game 5 playoff as soon as Buster cranked that Grand Salami …
Yeah, the sound alone can tell you so much. The pitcher and catcher both know very well what a crushed baseball sounds like off the bat.
Lou Williams starts off by making his first two three-point attempts vs. the Kings.
Man, that guy can “score the basketball.”
Puig. Puig is the answer. bums’ll never deal with the Giants, I suppose, but a trade for Puig would be perfect. Unless you hate Puig. $9M for 2018, then arb eligible. Someone could explain to him what that means, incentive-wise . . . . If it doesn’t work out, adios and vaya con goodbye. If it does work out, . . . .
Puig has had up and down career. Tremendous start that he couldn’t duplicate, awful K-ridden playoff series vs. Cards, ultimately sent to minors to work on some things, not all of which were baseball skill related, rebound last year. Hard to figure which Puig you would get on a daily basis.
With Hanley gone, he gets my vote for most annoying Dodger over Turner.
Yeah, I’m sure a lot of Dodger players wouldn’t mind him being traded, even with the bounce-back season he had. His act has been an irritation to some of them from the events in Molly Knight’s book onward. Could very well have been the tipping point for Greinke leaving. He particularly disliked Puig.
But I also see the point that he’s far better than any outfielder the Giants currently have.
I “hate” Turner. I hope to hell he gets busted for roids. Puig is a mystery. No telling how he’ll go. The bums want to get rid of him, that much we can be sure of; but can you imagine Posey, Longoria, Crawford and starving lion Hundley getting along with Puig? And Pence? wtf knows, but who plays RF? Oh, and then there’s his blood enemy Bumgarner and the likely MadBum back up in the pen, Strickland. I don’t see Puig happening. The coaching staff would quit. Otherwise, Puig’s exactly what the Giants’ OF needs.
he would upgrade our outfield significantly, I’ll give ya that.
fuck Puig. He’s got a great arm, otherwise he’s overrated and a complete pain in the ass and maybe the dumbest, most self absorbed ball player I’ve ever seen. Fake hustle too. Double fuck that guy.
Can’t imagine us getting Puig directly from the Dodgers, but I’d take him any way we could get him…
I;d take Porky Puig at this point.
Puig or Gorkys?
Hmmmm, that’s a real tough one…
