A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Against All Odds

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on March 15, 2018

The Pac 12 has one team in the tourney field of 64. That is embarrassing. I had planned on them being a bet against this year. Tough to bet against them if they aren’t playing. Kinda feels like Arizona is going to make a deep run, eh? With all the crazy stuff they’ve had to deal with this year, playing in a conference that’s as low as it’s maybe ever been, it wouldn’t surprise me to see them go all the way—just because they aren’t supposed to.

USC not being the tournament was a total joke. The NCAA absolutely hates USC. Any other big time program gets kid gloves treatment from the NCAA, but they go out of their way to fuck with USC.

they did get f-ed over. too bad Boatwright missed so much time with injuries and couldn’t finish season out. They likely beat UCLA in last league game if he is healthy; that one hurt them I’m sure. As is they were second in league and ahead of UCLA. ASU tied for 8th and got in. go figure.

Ha I was gonna try and find that quote. Never thought ASU deserved to be there—their Ws over Kansas and Xavier were very early in season when they went 12-0. Afterwards, 8-10 in not so great league, lost first game in league Tourney and now last night. I do think last 10 games or so going in should make a difference to Selection Committee.

AZ has pieces (tho I don’t like the small point guard), D would be issue. Any foul trouble for bigs would hurt them a lot. They do shoot FTs well and that can be difference maker.

Interesting to see how those conferences that got a lot of teams in wind up doing.

Saw an interview at gym yesterday with Calipari.. He does start 5 frosh, won league season and league Tourney (which he hates as Stanford’s Monty did too),

His take: Playing UK is always big deal for everyone. When you play for UK you have to realize losing to anyone is big letdown that is gonna get publicity and you get another team’s best effort. Well, now losing for all the other teams is big because it means season is over. so now it’s on everyone else, the type of pressure they’ve been playing under all season.

Guy came into store yesterday wearing a UConn hat.
Fun fact: 2 girls who played in our Asian league that I coached against middle school years are now HS seniors on top ranked team in US, Archbishop Mitty of San Jose. One has D-1 scholarship to U of San Diego in WCC.
Couple weeks ago Geno Auriemma was in the crowd to watch them play and scout their best player, a highly rated junior.

If the South goes chalk, Arizona would face Kentucky in next round and then Virginia in Sweet 16. Tough going there, but Kentucky is beatable and Virginia won’t have their top bench player, guard De’Andre Hunger, who has a broken wrist. Maybe Wildcats can make a run.

Wait until you have ten minutes to spare

  7. unca_chuck said, on March 15, 2018 at 9:38 am

I think the Wildcats go deep. As does Gonzaga. I’m in a work pool and I rarely do well in these.

  8. Macdog said, on March 15, 2018 at 12:22 pm

Zags tied vs. Greensboro with 3:20 left.

    • willedav said, on March 15, 2018 at 12:32 pm

yeah wild. Penn Quakers only down 6 to Kansas with 10 minutes left.

  9. unca_chuck said, on March 15, 2018 at 12:29 pm

Like I said, I rarely do well. I have the zags in the final 4. They are down by 2 now with 1:39 left.

  10. unca_chuck said, on March 15, 2018 at 12:38 pm

    Zags FTW!

  11. Macdog said, on March 15, 2018 at 12:38 pm

Two big J’s late, a missed UNCG 3 that almost went in, and the Zags stay alive. Better work on their free throws.

Oh man, tough loss for the Aztecs, had a great look for the game-winner. Great finish by both teams.

      LMAO . . . Good one AK.

    • xoot said, on March 15, 2018 at 8:48 pm

Schulman just tweeted that this is the second ST game in a row smarge has given up 3 HRs in an inning.

  18. alleykat69 said, on March 15, 2018 at 8:27 pm

Kinda looks like Arizona can make a deep run ,eh?
Well Buffalo is saying no way!Quicker, more athletic, grabbing every loose rebound, solid aggressive defense, this team is for real 😳

    • xoot said, on March 15, 2018 at 8:41 pm

Buffalo v. KY on Saturday could be one of the most entertaining games of the tournament. I personally don’t need to see AZ again.

  19. Flavor said, on March 15, 2018 at 8:46 pm

    This is so fucking awesome

  20. Macdog said, on March 15, 2018 at 8:48 pm

    Pac it in.

  21. blade3colorado said, on March 15, 2018 at 8:49 pm

Besides the 3 bombs, he had a wild pitch, 3 walks, 5 hits, and 5 earned runs in 3.2 innings . . . against the Padres. The good news? We’re tied at 6 in the 6th and Pence has gone 2 for 3, including a triple.

    • Macdog said, on March 15, 2018 at 8:50 pm

From a couple tweets I’ve seen, it sounds like Pence also has had a couple of nice catches.

      • blade3colorado said, on March 15, 2018 at 8:53 pm

Yeah, I’m pirating the gamecast and I saw one of those catches. Nice grab.

  22. djloo27 said, on March 15, 2018 at 9:08 pm

    Smargarine is pure trash.

Bum and Cueto and pray for a tornado…

  23. mrsprtdude said, on March 15, 2018 at 9:11 pm

Az getting smoked was a great way to start the tourney!!!

    • alleykat69 said, on March 15, 2018 at 9:41 pm

      Got that right Mrsprtdude!
A herd of Buffalo was stampeding thru the state of Arizona!
Yeah screw the PAC 12,no team should of got in..Buffalo proved that point with their beat down..

  24. mrsprtdude said, on March 15, 2018 at 9:14 pm

Smarge trash?? Not so much. Cy young maybe not, but a quality 3 or 4 starter on any team in the majors

    • djloo27 said, on March 15, 2018 at 9:24 pm

He’s around the plate too much. It’s like fuckin’ BP with him.
Classic innings eater because he’s big and strong.
      Dreadful signing…

  25. willedav said, on March 16, 2018 at 8:12 am

great games yesterday lot of exciting finishes. Even tho they didn’t win T Young impressed me with his passing and court vision. Really wish he’d stay another year or two and mature physically as well as in other areas, like shot selection.
I think Kerr had a good idea too–if players coming out early with an agent don’t get drafted then they should have a window to return to school and get scholarship back. There’s way too many of them that won’t make NBA.
It’s a lot harder than most of them think to even get beyond D-League. Staying in school and working on your education is a good thing that potentially would help them if their b-ball career wasn’t as good as they hoped.

“Against All Odds” is also the title of a not very good Phil Collins song that was the theme to a movie I never saw.

    • xoot said, on March 16, 2018 at 8:55 am

thin 1980s “remake” of the masterpiece Out of the Past

      • blade3colorado said, on March 16, 2018 at 9:55 am

Agree Xoot. One of the best “noir” films I’ve ever seen. Douglas is riveting.

  27. snarkk said, on March 16, 2018 at 9:10 am

    Don’t worry about Smardzxxxx.
    It’s ST, he’s working on stuff…

    • alleykat69 said, on March 16, 2018 at 9:15 am

Obviously none of “his new stuff is working”

  28. unca_chuck said, on March 16, 2018 at 11:23 am

We are getting a little bit late in ST to be ‘working on things.” He should be pushing his pitch count at this point, not giving up taters.

    • blade3colorado said, on March 16, 2018 at 11:40 am

      Agree . . . but I think snarkk was being facetious/sarcastic. 🙂

    • unca_chuck said, on March 16, 2018 at 11:47 am

      Could be . . . . . or not . . .

  29. wilcojoe said, on March 16, 2018 at 3:56 pm

Shaka Smart is the most overrated coach in college ball. Musselman took him to school.

    • gianthead said, on March 16, 2018 at 4:36 pm

Musselman deserved more credit when with the Dubs…

  30. gianthead said, on March 16, 2018 at 4:36 pm

Why is Smardaramjam just figuring out in this point of his career that everyone sits on his fastball??? Shouldnt the work he is putting in new pitches been happening years ago????

    • zumiee said, on March 16, 2018 at 5:19 pm

Probably one of the many factors in changing pitching coaches: the frustration with Smarj.

  31. djloo27 said, on March 16, 2018 at 5:08 pm

    One by one they go…

    • xoot said, on March 16, 2018 at 6:10 pm

Cepeda’s getting released from the hospital, I hear

      • djloo27 said, on March 16, 2018 at 7:18 pm

Hopefully not because they gave up…

  32. snarkk said, on March 16, 2018 at 6:22 pm

    Yes, blade was right, earlier.
Re: Smardzxxxx, the “working on stuff” was some snarkk on the old Kruk bromide when the SF pitcher is getting regularly clobbered in ST…

    • unca_chuck said, on March 16, 2018 at 6:29 pm

      He needs a heavy sinker.

      • xoot said, on March 16, 2018 at 6:56 pm

        concrete shoes?

  33. zumiee said, on March 16, 2018 at 7:14 pm

Ohtani gave up 7 runs today and now has an ERA of 27.
    And he’s batting .100.

    • zumiee said, on March 16, 2018 at 7:18 pm

      It’s looking bleak.

  34. zumiee said, on March 16, 2018 at 7:22 pm

He probably needs to start the season in the minors.

  35. xoot said, on March 16, 2018 at 8:02 pm

UVa v UMBC (Univ. Md-Baltimore County, apparently) is a helluva game. “scrappy” is usually a consolation term, but UMBC has taken it to a whole nother level. Can they pull this off? I hope so.

    • xoot said, on March 16, 2018 at 8:23 pm

      holy shit, they’re still winning

  36. Macdog said, on March 16, 2018 at 8:34 pm

1st time in history a #1 seed is going to lose !
UMBC Whips Virginia as more brackets get busted!!
    Congrats UMBC !!!!
    Biggest upset in Tournament history!!

  38. zumiee said, on March 16, 2018 at 9:29 pm

I’m preferring to watch and see if the Kings can defeat a depleted Warriors team.

    • zumiee said, on March 16, 2018 at 9:50 pm

      They did.

  39. willedav said, on March 16, 2018 at 10:11 pm
