A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Spring Reeling?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on March 23, 2018

“The only thing I care about in ST is health and it looks like we have that…”

….words that did not last true for very long.

We got some good news with the MRI with the pec strain. Most of you (not me) think Smarge sucks anyway (as does Parker) so maybe this good news is actually bad news for you.

Holland can fill in under the right circumstances, at least in the short term. Maybe they can try to hide him at AT&T. No road starts, please.

Look, if this was last year this would be a big deal. We would lose every start Holland gets. But our offense is going to be better and as long as no one else gets hurt we should be able to win the 7-6 games that Holland will be pitching in.

You’re right about Holland being a foregone conclusion to fill in. Baggarly also said that the team is unlikely to pursue any free agents at this point, as he indicated Bochy told him the team is looking at internal options. In house options suck, as Beede would technically be next in line. Hilarious.

If they did go outside, I read where they would be looking at “. . . a thin crop of remaining starters that includes Scott Feldman and Ubaldo Jimenez among the top remaining options.” Umm, no thank you.

If I’m the Giants, I would look seriously at a 4 man rotation for the month of April. Off days and rotation schedule set-up could possibly be jury rigged to “hide” Holland as much as possible. Dunno if that’s doable.

    • Flavor said, on March 23, 2018 at 7:46 am

how about RA Dickey. I’m serious. Theoretically it wouldn’t take him as long to get ready as the other guys. Maybe he fills in for a start or two? Couldn’t be worse than Holland and it would be fun to watch…..

      • blade3colorado said, on March 23, 2018 at 7:48 am

I would love Dickey. Dickey signed a one-year, $7.5 million contract with the Atlanta Braves that includes an $8 million club option for the 2018 season, with a $500,000 buyout. No idea if the Braves picked up his option though????

      • blade3colorado said, on March 23, 2018 at 7:52 am

Okay, I just found out where the Braves turned down his option and he apparently doesn’t want to play for any team too far from his Nashville, Tenn. home. He said at this point, there are only three teams he’d consider pitching for – the Braves, Reds or Cardinals.

        Here’s his statement . . .

“It would have to be the perfect spot. There are a few teams that are close to home, like Cincinnati, St. Louis, Atlanta, all three of those. And if the Braves weren’t interested and I still wanted to play, felt physically able to do it and my family was behind me, then I would entertain it. But it would have to be an ideal situation. And those kinds of things come up when you’re older, you get the opportunity to get to take a day off here or there during a series and go home because they understand what it’s like to be an older player. And if teams are willing to make concessions like that, then it’s something that I would entertain even if it wasn’t one of those three. But right now, you know, it’s hard to fathom being any further away than those three places.”

yeah then I guess San Francisco doesn’t fit into this dude’s lifestyle.

the UK kid missing 12 FTs sure hurt, but Gilgeous couldn’t get off his own shot vs. man D and then gave up GW hoop as Brown went right by him.
UK runs weird O with bigs mostly setting screens and otherwise not involved much. They walked ball up the floor at slow pace. Seemed like odd game plan.

    • Flavor said, on March 23, 2018 at 7:45 am

where do you stand on Calipari as a coach? Stephen A Smith was blathering away on tv at the place I picked up breakfast this morning. He said Calipari (at UK) has only won one time (with AD). Did I hear that right? Anyway, Stephen A was really giving it to him for that failure….

      • willedav said, on March 23, 2018 at 8:26 am

he recruits great teams with lot of talent and he busts them pretty hard in practice. Game strategy idk…

This year’s group said after the L they learned a lot from him and depending who returns expect to be really good next year too. It is hard to build continuity togetherness and trust with 4-5 new starters every season. And college frosh aren’t most mature guys on the planet, even b-ball wise.

  3. Flavor said, on March 23, 2018 at 7:43 am

the big question I have is whether this is the year Bum’s elbow finally spits the bit. He’s the biggest strongest man we’ve ever had pitch for us. But all these guys go down sooner or later.

  4. gianthead said, on March 23, 2018 at 10:34 am

We need to bury Holland onyo the 5th spot and hope Blach and Stratton step up big time. Beede was awful this spring and i question his big league viability as a starter. I have only seen this Fernandez a little. Isnt it worth keeping him in the minors and spring him on the league late before September call ups?

    • snarkk said, on March 23, 2018 at 1:26 pm

You can’t keep a rule 5 guy in the minors , he has to be on the 25 all year or he goes back to his prior team…

  5. gianthead said, on March 23, 2018 at 10:40 am

Bum is winning 30 games this year…Calipari has only won one title since being at KY. The one and done has really killed my interest in KY basketball.

I think it was the conference finals this year and they were interviewong Calipari at half and he commented about his players walking the ball up. He basically said wtf…walking the ball up is not Kentucky basketball…why I had them in most of my picks either losing to Davidson or AZ. This tournament has been certainly hard to predict…I was rooting hard for Nevada but they were outmatched and who saw Loyola being hard to beat??

  6. gianthead said, on March 23, 2018 at 10:49 am

Best lineup at this point seems to be:

    1) Jackson/Blanco CF…not a strict platoon but Duggar should not start. He needs to be ready to rip when he is ready to start next year or later this year if Blanco is not viable. He needs to hit everyday instead of starting in CF and then hitting 8th. They cant fuck with his head and let him take command when he is ready to take over
    2) Panik/Kelby…Kelby spot starter against lefties
    3) McCutch
    4) Posey
    5) Longoria
    6) Belt/Panda
    7) Pence
    8) Crawford

    • zumiee said, on March 23, 2018 at 11:18 am

Rutledge is an interesting case. He’s played better than Tomlinson overall this ST, but I’m not sure if he’s someone you can feel real comfortable with at shortstop, not that Tomlinson is an awesome SS either.
Tomlinson had a rough game last night, picked off firstbase as a pinchrunner, and then killed a rally by hitting into a doubleplay; whereas Rutledge contributed to the winning rally. But I don’t know if Rutledge ever really had a chance this ST.

      • gianthead said, on March 23, 2018 at 11:40 am

Will Rutledge take a Sacto assignment? I believe Tomlinson deserves to be on the roster…I still think if we are not chasing a Wild Card spot by trade deadline, I would be dangling every starter on the roster above 27…including Crawford, Belt, etc. Rutledge could be a competent starter in 2019 in a rebuild…what seems obvious is that besides lack of big league caliber OF in the system (the Williamsons, Parkers and Shaws have to prove they belong at the next level), the top end starters in the minors with Beede, Suarez and the Blackburn level arms, all seem to be underwhelming. I dont have great deal of confidence in Stratton. We need to find the next wave of Lincecums and Cains that helped spur 3 title runs…

  7. Flavor said, on March 23, 2018 at 11:56 am

I’d probably take Rutledge over Specs just because he can do a little more with the bat. I’m tired of these guys like Gork’s and Specs who literally have no chance of hitting a home run when they’re up. But Specs is fast, that goes a long way late in the game.

  8. djloo27 said, on March 23, 2018 at 12:35 pm

    Is 83.5 really the O/U? Doesn’t seem possible…

  9. snarkk said, on March 23, 2018 at 1:36 pm

I saw Holland for 3 frames in Peoria, I don’t think he’s as bad as some of you guys think. He’s somewhere between a 4 or 5 starter, IMO. If he gets a rhythm going, he’s pretty good…

  10. snarkk said, on March 23, 2018 at 1:44 pm

With Smardzxxx out for at least April, I can’t come off my 82-80 for SF. With that, they’re sniffing the WCII spot, and probably just missing it. I’m gong with Rocks as surprise div winner followed by LA, then 3rd is toss up SF and Dbacks. Pads bringing up rear, but barely, they are improved. Everything has to go right for SF to get even there. Pitch is staff is a real issue, it will be musical chairs in the Pen, I think. Given age, there has to be significant DL time somewhere for Pence, Longoria and or Cutch.

  11. snarkk said, on March 23, 2018 at 1:51 pm

I don’t see the point of Blanco. Duggar needs to play. Duggar is every bit the glove of Blanco, more pop, similar speed, and I doubt he is any worse for average. And he can steal a base. Dbacks tossed Blanco, so SF takes their discards? I have to assume Blanco stays partly for clubhouse cohesion reasons…

Bum hit on pitching hand/wrist by line drive. Immediately comes out of the game.

  13. zumiee said, on March 23, 2018 at 2:05 pm

Meanwhile Kershaw has not allowed a run in ST this year. He’s a man on a quest this year. He’s 30 now, and he wants to finally have a great post-season. We’ll see what happens.

  14. alleykat69 said, on March 23, 2018 at 2:07 pm

So much of the team staying healthy.Hope Bum’s wrist/hand is not broken!
Damm just when I was feeling good about Justin Turner’s injury(yeah I know I shouldn’t but he’s a Dodger) this happens to us, bad karma are what?

    • djloo27 said, on March 23, 2018 at 3:07 pm

We’ll be paying for those 3 titles long after I’m gone…

  19. blade3colorado said, on March 23, 2018 at 3:29 pm

Fucking Melanoma and Watson . . . Both useless today.

  20. blade3colorado said, on March 23, 2018 at 3:35 pm

I’ll be the first to say it – Melanoma is on the DL before the end of April. Loo sharing this image of his scar a few months ago was the biggest clue.

  21. wilcojoe said, on March 23, 2018 at 4:13 pm

Fractured pitching hand for Bum. Son of a bitch.

  22. Flavor said, on March 23, 2018 at 4:15 pm

    this is unreal…..

  23. wilcojoe said, on March 23, 2018 at 4:17 pm

Maybe something like this will teach the owners a god damn lesson about shortening ST.

  24. wilcojoe said, on March 23, 2018 at 4:20 pm

If I am Bochy, I don’t let any of my 25 touch the grass at AT&T or the Maseuleum this week.

  25. Flavor said, on March 23, 2018 at 4:21 pm

So who was the bigger jinx, me saying we were healthy two days ago with our 1/2 pitchers going down right after or GH predicting Bum was winning 30 games this year about 2 hours before he broke his hand?

    • wilcojoe said, on March 23, 2018 at 4:24 pm

You! It’s that damn intuition of yours.

  26. Flavor said, on March 23, 2018 at 4:32 pm

I mean shit, I’m still excited about the season. Of course this is a big blow to the Giants but who knows maybe Beede does something no one saw coming. Beede gets the call now, right? lol

  27. wilcojoe said, on March 23, 2018 at 4:38 pm

Baggs reporting he will have surgery tomorrow and hopes to pitch before the fire sale, I mean, All Star break.

    • snarkk said, on March 23, 2018 at 6:27 pm

My bedtime just went from 2:00 AM to 10:00 PM…

    • blade3colorado said, on March 23, 2018 at 6:39 pm

Sticking to my 75-87 prediction. As I indicated before, there’s more than a dozen “ifs” that potentially could sink the Giants and injury was a big one. Also, although not a causal factor in Bum’s injury, age possibly was with Smarg’s injury.

  36. zumiee said, on March 23, 2018 at 5:54 pm

The Giants are right up against the luxury tax “salary cap” limit. They’re not going to sign a free agent. I would be shocked if they did.

    • Flavor said, on March 23, 2018 at 5:58 pm

screw those free agents anyway. They all suck. I’d rather see what Beede does when you get him away from his wife for a couple of months.

    • Lurker John said, on March 23, 2018 at 7:06 pm

Nice reporting job by Amy G…

  38. djloo27 said, on March 23, 2018 at 6:37 pm

Ironically, the 2 years of fluke injuries will probably help Bumgarner get an even bigger deal by saving all the innings of wear and tear on his arm…

    • Flavor said, on March 23, 2018 at 6:44 pm

yeah, fucking awesome for him…..Man, do you guys know what the probability is of having EXACTLY Bum and Smarge be the two pitchers we have that get hurt? Not like Fernandez and Gearrin or some shit. But EXACTLY Bum and Smarge out of the 13 we have on staff right now?
      one percent. ONE FUCKING PERCENT……

      • djloo27 said, on March 23, 2018 at 6:57 pm

The Giants will be playing the Dodgers 10 times in the first 33 calendar days of the season. Or, 10 of their first 29 games. In 60 years of San Francisco baseball, the Giants have never played a team 10 times in the first 33 days of the season.
