A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Hitting the Re Set Button

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 11, 2018

So what’s gonna happen in Pittsburgh? Are we going to compete as we did in Atl or get taken to the woodshed as we did in Philly?

Somebody is stoked to be in Pitt:

I wonder how guys like ‘Cutch, Longo and Jackson feel about their first couple of months in SF. All 3 certainly had better results in their last stop. Is it a total grind to be a San Francisco Giant now? Do they hate it?

I’ll tell ya one thing, with all these damn K’s the team is piling up I’m definitely gonna have a few “Taillons” at draftkings today….

Watched Buehler pitch for LA last night. He looks damn good. I know the MLB draft is a bit of a crapshoot (we took Phil Bickford a few picks before LA got Buehler) but man am I sick of seeing the Dodgers run circles around us as far as having young talent at the MLB level.

Fired up for the Harvey start!

    • willedav said, on May 11, 2018 at 7:15 am

ha that would be great if he knocked off LA. My LB gal friend is going tomorrow, and is uh not happy with Dodgers results so far.

  2. blade3colorado said, on May 11, 2018 at 6:42 am

Longo loves it. He alluded to this, but wouldn’t say it out right, that playing in front of 10,000 to 15,000 fans each night in Tampa was a bummer (and by the by, they don’t even play in Tampa, but across the bay in St. Petersburg). He loves the fact that fans support the Giants.

    • willedav said, on May 11, 2018 at 7:13 am

exactly. He’s in a real yard full of fan support and surrounded by solid vets. He’s got 7 bombs, so on pace for 25+, way more than last year. Hope he can keep OPS .800ish.

Jackson, idk. Sure last season might have been outlier, but no way anyone expected him to be this bad, defensively too. some nice grabs that might not have happened last year, but bunch of errors/misplays too.

      • snarkk said, on May 11, 2018 at 7:23 am

Jackson is so bad he’s making me pine for Span….

      • blade3colorado said, on May 11, 2018 at 7:33 am

No, that’s not true Willie . . . I expected Jackson to be bad; and quite frankly, despite the bombs, Longo’s BA of .241, OBP of .263, and and sub .800 OPS are all worse or similar to what he did last season. Moreover, I indicated this was a bad trade, mostly due to his contract. He has an outside chance of out performing last season’s (which was the worst of his career by the way), but after that – it’s downhill in my opinion.

Similarly, Cutch is under performing from last season’s stats, albeit, his OBP is outstanding and he’s known to be a slow starter. Regardless, he’s old (e.g., his defense has definitely gone down hill).

Can all 3 turn it around? Of course, but to say they are doing what they have done in the past, would be burying your head in the sand.

      • willedav said, on May 11, 2018 at 8:23 am

Still think better investment would have been L Cain for CF. That way maybe no Longo no Cutch no AJ and SF keeps Arroyo tho still stuck with Span and Pence. There were other options for 3b like Cozart or Frazier that could have taken that position and imo would have been just fine.
Lux tax position SF took I don’t agree with either, especially since they are short of reliable starting pitching.

      • blade3colorado said, on May 11, 2018 at 10:04 am

Snarkk, I hate to say it – but you’re right. I just read this:

“Austin Jackson (-5 DRS), Gregor Blanco (-1 DRS), and Gorkys Hernandez (-1 DRS) are all below average outfielders so far. Jackson’s the worst defender on the roster, in fact. This same trio (Hernandez: 87 wRC+, Blanco: 84 wRC+, Jackson: 56 wRC+) is better only than Kelby Tomlinson (86 wRC+), Brandon Crawford (75 wRC+), and Hunter Pence (0 wRC+) at the plate.”

  3. Flavor said, on May 11, 2018 at 7:37 am

Diggity and I have altered the bet a bit, at his request. The o/u on harvery Q starts this year is now 4.5.

  4. willedav said, on May 11, 2018 at 8:09 am

I meant SF FO that signed him didn’t expect AJ to struggle as opposed to matching numbers from last year with Tribe. He was bargain type of CF in Evans lux tax world. But to be outdone by Gorks and Blanco, wow.
Once Bochy decides he doesn’t need 13 man pitching staff, OF will need to get sorted out somehow.

I still think Cutch and Longo will help the team and their production will increase.
However, the caveat for all hitters and position players in ATT is, if you are waiting for the weather to heat up, it ain’t happening except for Sunday day games.

  5. unca_chuck said, on May 11, 2018 at 10:07 am

They could get rid of Pence, Actionless, Blanco and Gorkys, and the effect would be nada. You add them all up and you get 1/4 of a real outfielder. Between the 4 of them, they have 16 ribbies.

Might as well put us out there. Or Slater, Duggar, Shaw, and whatever AA guy grabs your fancy. This abject suckage from these guys is galling to say the least. Find out what these guys can do rather than trot out these mediocre fucks.

    • blade3colorado said, on May 11, 2018 at 10:24 am

Agree Chuck. The “ceiling” for these guys is so low, that Duggar, Slater and/or Shaw can easily do as good (or is the word, bad?). More important, Sabean said this about Duggar in spring training:

“This kid has a chance to be a five-tool outfielder, let alone centerfielder. I think, and a lot of people in the organization think, that he right now is an above average major league centerfielder. He’s got a leg-up from the defensive standpoint, we just don’t know how the bat is going to adjust to not having as many minor league at-bats as you’d want to see.”

Bochy said this in response to this spring training question, “With what Duggar showed you this spring, does it give you a pretty good notion that he’ll be a factor at some point?”

“Oh, I’d say. Sure. No question. You know, with how he played, how he handled himself, he’s again a gifted athlete – but also a learner. You see him. He’s talking to the guys, he’s listening. He’s got the whole game I think. Defense. I think he’s going to be a good hitter. Bunter. Baserunner. We have, we think, a really special player in Duggar.”

      BRING THE KID UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. dirtnrocksnomo said, on May 11, 2018 at 10:23 am

Beede lit up again yesterday. Dude is pitching his way out of the org. Slater hitting close to .380 is spinning his wheels in Sacramento while LF is a Giant suck-hole

  7. alleykat69 said, on May 11, 2018 at 11:02 am

Interesting point Gary Radnich of all people brought up to Baggs. Gabe Kapler doesn’t allow any of his pitchers to shag balls during BP,he has local inner city kids do it, granted it may be harder for road teams to do, maybe use the coaches? But it makes sense to save some extra throws for your starters,BP guys. Boch should atleast try it in home games..

  8. alleykat69 said, on May 11, 2018 at 11:08 am

Agree with Blade&Dirt are OF situation is a big suck hole!! Duggar&Slater need to be called up now!!! Jettison Actionless,Blanco, Gorky meh probably not going anywhere cause he’s younger but still sucks..

  9. djloo27 said, on May 11, 2018 at 12:50 pm

    1. Gregor Blanco (L) LF
    2. Andrew McCutchen (R) RF
    3. Buster Posey (R) C
    4. Brandon Belt (L) 1B
    5. Evan Longoria (R) 3B
    6. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
    7. Alen Hanson (S) 2B
    8. Austin Jackson (R) CF
    9. Andrew Suarez (L) P

    • Flavor said, on May 11, 2018 at 12:55 pm

kinda wish Hanny got more than one shot in the leadoff spot

      • alleykat69 said, on May 11, 2018 at 1:11 pm

We all do,but not under the Bochy regime..

      • Macdog said, on May 11, 2018 at 2:40 pm

A home run to start the game probably means Blanco gets at least another month in the leadoff spot.

  10. unca_chuck said, on May 11, 2018 at 3:52 pm

If we tank, is Bochy gone by the break?

I just don’t think the brain trust is fully behind him anymore. I mean really, they aren’t doing all they could to help him, but this trotting out of Blanco at leadoff and he’s like 2-38 there recently is just stupefying. And Austin Powerless and Gorkys Can’t Park One. On and on.

Move guys up for God’s sake. Either we turn the roster over by mid-June, or Bochy hits the bricks.

    • dirtnrocksnomo said, on May 11, 2018 at 3:57 pm

Adding Dusty to the FO always struck me as odd and seems like he could be insurance for cutting Bochy loose if the club doesn’t perform. That said, Bumgarner and Cueto going down gives Bochy a lot of leeway. The club started poorly and has climbed back to .500. Take this series and it’s a successful road trip.

The SOs wouldn’t be as bad or as much of a concern, except for the fact, that a large percentage of them are swing and misses.

  13. alleykat69 said, on May 11, 2018 at 4:40 pm

Yeah that was a nice SO for Cutch, lots of love,McCutchen Jerseys everywhere..
ATT Park is still the best, but this one rates 2nd to me .Much better then Petco imo, especially with the bridge, the water,&skyline!

Giants this time last year 12-24,wound up month 22-33.

Schulman is basically a morbid s.o.b. His Bonds-era wounds will never heal. He has a point, though. I saw a note predicting that Harvey will pitch in SF on Wed.

Just occurred to me that Matt Harvey, Mr. Dark Knight, Mr. New York Party Till Dawn, now has as pitching coach (Danny Darwin) a no-b.s., fly-right, play-the-damn-game Texan who once fought Barry Bonds in the tunnel in Pittsburgh for not going after a base hit hard enough.
