Rough Patch Starts Tonight

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 22, 2018

If we are going to take one in Houston, today is probably the day. I’m gonna have to see this new and improved Gerrit Cole for myself before I believe he’s the AL CY leader. His K’s are up, his walks are down and he’s dominating in a hitters park. It doesn’t usually work that way.

Personally I’m more worried about one of our unfab five taking the hill. Suarez? Against these guys? Pfffttttt….I think we’ll hit Cole but this could be a high scoring game….

Tomorrow? Verlander is the best pitcher in baseball. Maybe he’ll have an off day or something…..

Epic fail for the Bay Area Hall of Fame on soccer player Brandi Chastain’s plaque.

Looks more like the late Lady Vols Coach Pat Summitt. That is beyond awful.

      I’m going with Rex Ryan.

I’ll go with Todd Helton. A lot of the baseball ones are awful as well.
      I find Marichal’s particularly appalling…

Somebody asked me yesterday who the starting pitcher for the Giants was today. I had no idea. I guess at some point I should memorize the order of this rotation. I guess the problem is the rotation hasn’t felt memorization-worthy.

Giants have to hope Stros bats remain in slumber mode. Last year they led league in dang near every offensive category—runs hits bombs BA OB OPS SLG.
This year 5th runs 10th bombs middle of pack 7-8 Slg OPS. Few of regs hitting low .220s.

they have already scored 98 more runs than they’ve given up on way to 30-18 record. Fun team to watch; they outclassed A’s when they were here. And then A’s went East and had winning road trip vs. NY Bos Tor.

Btw, speaking of Verlander (and thx for posts on Sando bomb/V reaction) took a look at the deal with Tigers.
Detroit got 3 prospects—one CF in A+ ball, one SP in A+ who was top 50 rated, and C who is hitting .167 in first year AA.
Plus this year and next Tigers kick in $8mil salary. Ouch.

  5. willedav said, on May 22, 2018 at 8:03 am

LA got 2 hits off Gonzalo Marquez last night. Bellinger was in CF and is 1-21 according to game tweet.
Utley made couple errors and cost them game winning run on IF hit.
Kemp made last out after IF single when ball was thrown away but picked up by the C who threw behind him after he took step toward second and was tagged out.
Rox have now beaten LA 5 in a row at Latrine.
This stuff didn’t happen during their 4 yr (?) run as NL West champs.

    • zumiee said, on May 22, 2018 at 9:03 am

      5 year run so far.

    • willedav said, on May 22, 2018 at 9:56 am

german marquez…never heard of him but he only gave up 1 run in 7. This is stuff that usually happens to SF.

Rough Patch and The Five Fives could be a band name. Or a traveling circus freak show.

  7. chipower9 said, on May 22, 2018 at 8:26 am

The numbers were not there for our guys to go sweep the Braves, but they did (of course, the wheels came off during rest of the road trip), so I see no reason we cannot take one in Houston…even though they lead the AL in team ERA and WHIP (0.97). Offensively, they’re middle of the road in the AL. JUST STEAL ONE, baby…

Cubbies will be tough…Wrigley always seems tough, too. Cubs are near the top in all team pitching and offense categories. As Flav said earlier this week, I would be happy going 3-5…anything better is gravy (mmmm…gravy).

  8. chipower9 said, on May 22, 2018 at 8:29 am

Sorry for the duplicate info…Didn’t see your post Willie on Astro’s team stats, etc.

    • willedav said, on May 22, 2018 at 9:58 am

I didn’t look at pitching, which obviously has been really good. I did see that V has ERA of 1.05 wow.

  9. dirtnrocksnomo said, on May 22, 2018 at 8:40 am

It’s still sort of strange to me that the Astros are in the AL and there’s no NL team in Texas. Sucks for the fans.

    • Macdog said, on May 22, 2018 at 9:11 am

It’s been so long now, it’s hard to believe that the Giants and Astros were in the same division for 24 years.

      • dirtnrocksnomo said, on May 22, 2018 at 9:14 am

        Yep. Reds and Braves too.

  10. chipower9 said, on May 22, 2018 at 9:09 am

I know we have all kicked this around, but it still amazes me that this team, with all the injuries to some key players, has played as well as they have and are only two out. Hypothetically, those games against the Rox at the end of this roadie could be a battle for first place.

It is exciting to think about this team’s potential when we get everyone back: Bum, Cueto (hopefully he is able to pitch rest of the year), melatonin (not holding my breath, but it might happen, and monkeys could fly outta my ass), Panik, Hanson, Mac, and yes, even Pence. Hey, if Pence’s work with the hitting instructor makes a positive difference in his production at the plate, and he can help this team make a run, giddy-up. Concern with Pence, outside of this swinging the stick, is also his play in the OF, and not sure there is a way to significantly improve that. Regardless, it is fun to think what could be in the near future.

    Humm Baby!

Melancon for the River Cats last night:

    • alleykat69 said, on May 22, 2018 at 10:05 am

Geez right their with Zito in velocity..

      • chipower9 said, on May 22, 2018 at 10:17 am

Yeah, but working back from this injury, I am less concerned about velocity, as long as he can consistently get opposing hitters out.

I have no expectation for this guy. If he can’t break 90 mph, he can’t close, and he’ll be challenged to succeed at any Pen spot without pinpoint command…

      • chipower9 said, on May 22, 2018 at 11:32 am

Agree, snarkk. But as mentioned, the dude will have to build-up at, strength, etc. I have absolutely no expectations, either. But with the coin he is making, he deserves a chance to see if he can contribute, IMO. If he doesn’t revert, looks like we will see in a couple of weeks.

      • dirtnrocksnomo said, on May 22, 2018 at 11:36 am

All he has to do is be better than Gearrin’s 1.6 WHIP

      • chipower9 said, on May 22, 2018 at 12:13 pm

No shit, Dirt. My fuse is short with Gearrin….

  13. chipower9 said, on May 22, 2018 at 10:32 am

Just looking at the schedule and it produced a WTF moment. We play the cubbies at 11:40 in the first game of the series (after a travel day), but then have a 5:05 start in the finale before flying to the rock pile (no travel day). They should have swapped start times for those two games. Assinine…

The scheduling goons need their asses kicked on that one…

    • Macdog said, on May 22, 2018 at 10:44 am

Cubs almost always play a day game on the Friday to start a weekend series at home. And Sunday is the ESPN game. It is ridiculous, though, for the away team to have to play the next day in another city after playing the ESPN game.

  14. Macdog said, on May 22, 2018 at 10:48 am

Harvey start tonight! At home vs. the Bucs.

oh man. You and SD are funny. Wonder if Reds still have him on pitch count? SF had 3 on him but he was shutting out LA. Still has to 6 tho.
Like to see a Giant SP go 6.

  15. YogiBarrister (@Yogi47951368) said, on May 22, 2018 at 11:27 am

    For entertainment only!
Giants odds of sweeping the two game series: 25-1
    Giants splitting: 8-1
    Giants getting swept: 1-6

Actual Vegas line: Giants +230/ Astros -270

    • wilcojoe said, on May 22, 2018 at 11:31 am

Man,I would totally lay down $20 on the Giants at 8-1. They Astros haven’t been hitting at home, they have never seen Suarez and the Giants know Cole very well.

      • wilcojoe said, on May 22, 2018 at 11:33 am

Of course the DBacks knew Cole pretty well a couple weeks ago yet he dominated them for a CG 1 hitter with 16k’s. So there is that.

      • willedav said, on May 22, 2018 at 12:29 pm

AZ hasn’t been doing much to anyone. At least in that yard, maybe RHs step it up.

Yeah, those aren’t real world odds. I’ll accept your wager in FlapCoin
I felt the same negative vibe against Philly. Had I been at a sports book, I would have done a four game parlay with much better odds.

Well the Giants are going through a very strange season, lose their top 3 starts with in weeks of each other, then they lose Panik, and Pence, and then Williamson, and yet here they are at .500 ball, 2 games out. Oh and to put icing on the cake they are ahead of the Dodgers. Don’t we all just love baseball

  18. blade3colorado said, on May 22, 2018 at 12:48 pm

Thanks for sharing the Melanoma link Chi. I’m down with what snarkk said about this guy – no expectations. In fact, in my opinion, it’s $62 million down the commode if what Mac posted is true regarding his velocity. Here’s his past velocity charts . . . https://www.fangraphs.com/pitchfxo.aspx?playerid=4264&position=P&statArr=&legend=1&split=base&time=daily&start=2015&end=2017&rtype=mult&gt1=15&dStatArray=FC&ymin=&ymax=

In short, 86-87 MPH isn’t going to cut it. Equally important, he has to prove that he can pitch on consecutive days (something lug head can do with ease). By the by, Strickland has been very good per that link Chi shared. I am down with him continuing to close or even Watson or Dyson.

    • chipower9 said, on May 22, 2018 at 1:26 pm

Thanks for the velocity (or lack thereof) charts. I have said continuously that I too have no expectations, and truly questioned whether or not the dude would ever pitch again. My point is we are on the hook for the coin, let’s see if he can contribute. As Dirt mentioned earlier, all he needs to do is have a WHIP that is less than Gearrin’s 1.6.

  19. willedav said, on May 22, 2018 at 1:01 pm

That’s too bad for Howie Kendrick, torn Achilles out for season. Devastating injury to come back from. I’ve seen guys I was playing b-ball with tear theirs…got me to stop playing full court once a week with old fart buddies as I could feel mine tighten up as I was trying to accelerate. Missing extended time off work/wearing the boot wasn’t an option.

I hope for the best of health for Melancon so he can get back to doing what he likes to do, and hopefully near the level he was at prior to signing with Giants. Wouldn’t wish what happened or that scar on anyone, especially any athlete deprived of playing ball.

The club has already waiting 12 months for Bumgarner. I don’t think they should fast track him despite the five fives being rolled out there. One more turn of the rotation isn’t going to be that big of a deal in the long run.

    • djloo27 said, on May 22, 2018 at 2:56 pm

Looks like they’re not fast tracking Pence or MTO, either. I was sure one or both would be on the mini-park road trip…

  26. djloo27 said, on May 22, 2018 at 2:58 pm

    • xoot said, on May 22, 2018 at 6:45 pm

I can’t imagine that the feds give a shit about letters to Stix, but I’m still considering mine. I’ve thought about him a lot lately as I’ve begun to shop at my local cannabis outlets. If you’re 21 or older, show a driver’s license and make it through a metal detector, you can buy anything you want. Consultants stand ready to discuss CBDs and THC, sativa and indica. The display cases impress. Big senior citizen discounts, too. And half a world away suspected cultivation in the worst marijuana growing climate in the world was the reason the federal helicopter buzzed Stix’s homestead? But I’ll bet he’s glad to hear about the Giants.

  30. snarkk said, on May 22, 2018 at 4:58 pm

Yeah, blade. The non appearance of Mac in Houston is frustrating, and predicted. Bochy show on Sunday, Bochy telegraphed it, but didn’t say it specifically. Maybe a beat writer, if he’s awake or not eating, will find out the rationale. DH there would be perfect for him, he could hit a long high pop to LF and it would go out. They keep putting Sanchez behind the plate after countless concussions, but don’t put Mac into the LU for this, and supposedly he’s clear of symptoms. Go figure…

    • blade3colorado said, on May 22, 2018 at 5:34 pm

Yeah, we’ll have to wait and see, but it looks like 3 outs in the 7, 8 and 9 spots.

  31. xoot said, on May 22, 2018 at 5:26 pm

well, Suarez cut through the top three Houston hitters. Good job. Time to bring in a starting pitcher for the next 5 innings, right?

  32. blade3colorado said, on May 22, 2018 at 5:31 pm

Smooth 1st inning was big for Saurez. Watching the Astros broadcast and I think they said something along the lines of Saurez allowing a .400 plus batting average in the first inning.

Very professional, sort of a button down Brooks Brothers broadcast (if that makes sense). Not a lot of joking like K and K.

    • xoot said, on May 22, 2018 at 5:33 pm

you’re really lucky you don’t have to listen to Affeldt. Jon Miller can’t get him to make sense or tone it down.

What a terrible way to blow this game.No passing and stupid turnovers.

    Jeebus. Now Kerr calls time.

Dubs missed Iggy on D and he pushes the break, which they didn’t do much tonight…

Epic fail. Fuck. Dubs most own another major choke. Over and over down the stretch out of control shots with no ball movement. Missed what or last 5, 6, 7 shots? Harden played like crap in the 2nd and we we outscored 24-12. Exactly the same as the Cleveland game 7. Epic fail.

Fun game tonight. Much better crowd than I expected considering the Dubs-Rockets game was going on at the same time. Still a decent turnout of Giants fans. The crowd gave Crawford a nice ovation when he homered off Cole. The local media really hyped the Crawford-Cole connection so it was cool to see the fans appreciate the familial feat.

The Giants just looked overmatched in every aspect. It really is incredible they have been playing .500 ball with this pitching staff.

Local scribe just tweeted that Gerrit Cole signed both of his cleats he wore tonight and gave to Crawford. On one he wrote “Outta Here” and the other “Adios, Pelota”. Pretty cool!

Speaking of artistic misfires, this was supposed to be Lucille Ball.

And the crowd favorite: Tom Brady in court:
