A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

I got 99 Problems And These 5 Guys Are 5 of Them

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 24, 2018

The Houston series went pretty much how we thought it would go. I had hoped they’d take the first one but losing both was hardly a surprise. For *fun* I checked the collective ERA of our 5 Fives and was secretly hoping it would zero out exactly at 5.00. It didn’t. 5.22. The question is whether they could whittle that down to an even 5 by the end of this roadie and I think I’d take the “hell no” on that bet. But who knows? Anyone see these five fellows whacking their number down to 5.00?

There are so many ads on the mobile version of the Flap that I can’t tell. Did you post the pic of the Five Guys burgers or is that a perfectly placed ad?

Ah Cubs scored 1 run in 2 days at Wrigley. some guy named Adam Plutko of Tribe no hit them for 6 innings of 1-0 W. Giants are still only 2 out.

Watched some of Casilla again last night. Brought in top 9 in 1 run game he almost hits a guy with first pitch and then gives up single 4 pitch walk and then after a fly out another walk to load bases. Then gets come backer and starts 1-2-3 DP to end inning after 24 pitches. Guy is never boring.

Great list and mostly players I like very much. Shaking my head that I forgot who Hobie Landrith was (and should have known). He caught Juan Marichal’s 1st game in the big leagues, where he almost pitched a no hitter. He also had a great battle with Haller for playing time in 1961, along with John Orsino. Moreover, Landrith played 3 years with the Giants ($80k salary in 1961. A lot of mullah back in the day) . . .

By the by, I challenge anyone to find a Wiki biography longer than his versus any 2nd and 3rd string player . . . and MOST 1st string players. Unbelievably, long, and interesting/thorough bio of him.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hobie_Landrith

      • djloo27 said, on May 24, 2018 at 9:02 am

Blade: Where are you seeing $80k for Landrith in 1961? That’s gotta be a typo…

      • djloo27 said, on May 24, 2018 at 9:04 am

Ok, I see it in the Wiki article, but refuse to believe it…

      • blade3colorado said, on May 24, 2018 at 9:11 am

Yeah, especially when you consider that it was a big deal when Mays and Mantle got $100k (which I don’t think either got until the mid-60s, right?).

    • blade3colorado said, on May 24, 2018 at 8:34 am

Interesting that Haller and Landrith both had number 5 . . . Haller must have gotten the number after Landrith was traded.

  6. blade3colorado said, on May 24, 2018 at 7:55 am

Who is this Giant festering in the minors?

    6 for 17 in 5 games (.353 BA), 2 bombs, .400 OBP, .882 SLG, and 1.282 OPS.

Meanwhile, bonehead Bochy said this in response to this player being promoted . . .

“It’s a possibility, sure,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “When you look how much he’s playing and how he’s doing, I think it is a possibility”

    • djloo27 said, on May 24, 2018 at 8:02 am

Could that some-oooone… be Mac the Oaf?

Hey, easy now, let’s not jinx his pending return. The man is as graceful as a prima ballerina. Repeat that 10 times to make it so.

    • willedav said, on May 24, 2018 at 8:13 am

fortunately he also said of Pence and his new swing, “…he needs a few more at bats with this.”

As for the real song Mack the Knife that Loo quotes from famous Darin version, Sonny Rollins did a great version on his famous recording Saxophone Colussus that has St. Thomas on it. Here it is titled “Moritat.”

    • snarkk said, on May 24, 2018 at 8:34 am

Seriously, sometimes I wonder WTF the Giants management is thinking, and if they really have winning as their #1 priority. If there is not some physical reason, a roster management reason, at least some plausible reason for Mac not being called up immediately, then it just makes no sense to me. These days, anybody can be DLed for 10 days, they could DL Blanco for a hangnail and bring him up to get him going. Maybe I missed the reason explained somewhere in the media…

Personally Mac the Oaf doesn’t do much for me. We have already seen what he can do. As far as the AAA numbers go? Pffft! How many times have we seen that from our white honkys. Even as great as the Astros farm system has been they have a bunch of white honkys who murder AAA pitching but don’t do shit up here. Derek Fisher, JD Davis and Tyler White to name three. I personally don’t want to see the Giants draft any white honky “power hitters” in this years draft.

    • blade3colorado said, on May 24, 2018 at 9:14 am

Agree overall Joe. The only thing I want to know is if it was a mirage when he was playing earlier this season and was raking (3 bombs too). I want to know once and for all if that LA swing coach did some magical juju on his swing. Let’s get him up here and decide if he’s for real or just one of the Bowker gang misfits.

nice column from K Cunningham on Giants prospects struggles over at MCC. top of list for fails so far is Beede, who has ERA of 5.31. Also takes some digs at Duggar, who is hitting .244 with 20 BBs/54 Ks in 164 ABs in hitter friendly PCL. Notes Duggar hasn’t played much at higher levels (75 games combined at AA and AAA), and breaking stuff giving him lot of trouble.

Let this guy play every day in Sac and see how his hitting improves is still my take. D is fine but Giants are going to need more hitters as long the 5/5s are on the hill.

Oh and he did say Slater is being moved around a lot, playing CF and some 2b.

Loo, I think you’re right about Landrith’s salary of $80k . . .I just checked Mays salary for the same year (1961) and he made $85 thousand. Consequently, I have to conclude that either: A. Mays got cornpoled by Stoneham; B. Landrith and/or his agent were brilliant negotiators; or C. The Wiki bio is a typo (as you indicated).

    • djloo27 said, on May 24, 2018 at 10:34 am

Gotta go with “C”, Blade $80k was top dollar in ’61…

The key to ordering at Subway is to tell them what you want, but then watch closely as they make the sandwich and nicely correct them on any mistakes they are about to make. Watch that sandwich all the way through the process. There’s a Subway on the walk to AT&T Park, and I usually stop there to get something instead of buying at the ballpark.

    • blade3colorado said, on May 24, 2018 at 9:52 am

Agree about how to order the Subway sandwich and also, going to the Subway adjacent to the train station. You also might want to try the sandwiches at the Safeway. Delicious, except for the ungodly wait times. Regardless, both are inexpensive, delicious alternatives to the crap inside the ball park.

Yeah, not a “grilled” sandwich person either – usually the 3rd thing the Subway employee asks you after what sandwich and type of bread you want.

    • djloo27 said, on May 24, 2018 at 9:53 am

Thanks, Zum. I think my problem is that there are so many toppings and stuff, that I can’t figure out what’s gonna work. What do you normally get there?

      • Lurker John said, on May 24, 2018 at 10:27 am

You don’t know what you like on a sandwich yet? How old are you, Loo? LOL For me, usually, lettuce, tomato, onion, olives, pickles and peperonchino’s does the trick. Mayo, mustard, some pepper. Don’t need added salt with all the cured deli meats. Oil and vinegar if you’re really feeling froggy.

      • sandog said, on May 24, 2018 at 10:37 am

I’ll never forget being at a sandwich place in SF where the people working there were all Norwegians or Swedish. A family-owned place, I’m assuming. I ordered the sandwich, and then they (I think) asked me if I wanted it grilled, which I never want to happen for my sandwich, so I said “no.” But I could tell we weren’t on the same wave-length. So I tried real hard to let them know that I didn’t want it grilled. I could have sworn we were finally on the same page. I went and sat down, and then they brought the sandwich out to me, grilled. I just sighed and ate the sandwich. I’m not a “send it back” type of person. I just chalked it up to experience.

I give Williamson a lot of credit for taking some initiative and rebuilding his swing and his improvement shouldn’t be overlooked. All you ever heard about Parker’s off season was which tropical location he visited and it wasn’t to play winter ball. If a guy like Duvall can turn the corner at 27 and be a replacement level player there’s no reason Williamson can’t follow suit. That doesn’t mean he’s an all star but he’s better than any of the options the Giants can roll out there. It’s a big if for the Oaf to stay on the field but I’d put him as slightly better or equal to Duvall and obviously bringing more power than Pence at this point.

It’s beyond bizarre that the club doesn’t bring him up. I’m sure he could overrun and completely whiff on a routine fly ball just as well as McCutchen – seriously, WTF was that yesterday? Dude’s defense leaves a lot to be desired.

I stopped eating Subway sandos years ago when I realized they sucked.

    • Lurker John said, on May 24, 2018 at 10:29 am

They certainly aren’t the best, but a sight better than your average fast food if you want to keep things semi light. Good sandwich shops are hard to find. Can’t beat some of the Jewish deli’s in the L.A. area. Art’s in Studio City is killer.

    It’s a cardiologist’s worst nightmare.

Stuffed with bacon, sausage, pulled rib meat, brisket and a half-pound beef patty – not to mention cheddar cheese, ranch and barbeque sauce and the usual lettuce and tomato – The Boss clocks in at a hefty 1,650 calories and measures almost half a foot in height. As burgers go, the price is big too: 14.49 to $14.99, depending on the location.”

At a Subway’s or other sandwich place, I only want mustard, no mayo. The quickest way to ruin a lunch-meat sandwich for me is for someone to put mayo on it. I can take mayo on a tuna or chicken salad type of sandwich, but that’s it. At Subway’s they have honey mustard, so I always order that as the only condiment. The breads I’ll vary just for variety’s sake. I want everything they have on the sandwich, except…..no olives and no hot peppers. Olives are a mystery to me. A lot of people like them, but I can’t stand them. I’ve spent a lifetime picking olives out of things, like pizzas and salads. As for hot peppers, I’m just really wimpy on peppers in general. I buy the mild salsa in the grocery store. I bought the medium salsa at Costco once, and it seemed pretty darn hot to me.

    • YogiBarrister (@Yogi47951368) said, on May 24, 2018 at 2:20 pm

No mustard on sandwiches, unless you consider hot dogs to be sandwiches. It’s OK for ham & Swiss or pastrami on rye, or on Strickland’s fastball.

  23. zumiee said, on May 24, 2018 at 12:03 pm

There’s a privately-owned sandwich shop in my local area that’s very popular. Good sandwiches, but also people get a kick out of supporting an independent, family-owned business. All the sandwiches have names, like Jake or Justin or Sally. So, Justin might be a turkey sandwich of some kind. You take a 3 by 5 card from the counter and you write the name of the sandwich, and any special modifications, and write your first name at the bottom of the card and hand the card to one of the people behind the counter. They serve a lot of people but they actually move really quickly. The place has interior seating, but also has kind of a funky-cool backyard with some tables and lots of plants.

The rest of the division is stumbling as the Dodgers are finally getting some momentum together. The Dodgers could end up just being a blue blur passing everybody. The division had a chance to bury them pretty deeply early, but that didn’t happen, and now the Dodgers are probably feeling like they can put together a nice run and run away with it again. The last few years they’ve been able to put together a ferocious streak at some point, like going 40-10 or something. There has to be a mental aspect to it, too. Teams start to get intimidated and just fall apart against them. The other night, the Rockies had a lead in the 6th inning, and the reliever threw the worst pitch I’ve seen all season from anybody. A hanging cement-mixer that went across the middle of the plate, waste-high. The Dodger hit it for a 2-run HR, and the Rockies were never the same in that series after that. They just folded up their tent.

you have to have mayonnaise on a BLT

    • wilcojoe said, on May 24, 2018 at 1:47 pm

There is nothing better than a BLT with Oscar Meyer bacon (none of that applewood smoked shit), iceberg lettuce (don’t even think about using Romaine) and most importantly back of your yard fresh tomatoes on white bread (slightly toasted) with Hellmans Mayo (Best Foods if your west of the Rockies) and a little salt and pepper on a hot summer day. Hell if the tomatoes are really good, you can even hold the B and the L.

      • Lurker John said, on May 24, 2018 at 1:58 pm

    • blade3colorado said, on May 24, 2018 at 3:36 pm

Exactly my choice AK. Regarding Flav hating Subway . . . IMO there are degrees of dislike or like. “Sucks” isn’t what I would use to describe Subway, especially if we’re talking about all fast food joints. In fact, the last time I even had a McDonalds, Wendys, Jack In The Box, Taco Bell, etc., fast food experience was in 2014. I think it was when I was more or less “trapped” with my friend, Jeremy, while we went cross country to a few Western States and into Canada for a couple of weeks. He was driving, so I really had no choice regarding these visits (usually mid night type runs after hitting a few bars). I actually ate at one of these places late at night (Jack in the Box I think) and the frickin’ food must have took a couple of days to completely digest. it was that bad. Similar experience at Taco Bell. I can at least tolerate McDonalds (like the fries). All of this shit is fat food. If you want to be fat, go for it. Empy, bad calories for the most part.

Basically, I will hit a Subway or Chipolte once in a blue moon. Otherwise, forget it.

  31. xoot said, on May 24, 2018 at 3:26 pm

thick-cut dry-cured bacon cooked in the oven just crisp, never crumbly but never soft either. Put those sticks upright in a large jar, so they look like many old long boards leaning together in a corner. Slice beefsteak tomatoes from the vines on the patio; wash and dry fresh romaine leaves. Put it all on the table with a toaster and three different loaves of bread. Everyone can cut and toast their own bread, spread on real mayo to taste, add the fixings, sprinkle coarse salt and pepper, and then select from the jar as many sticks of bacon as they desire. I like to have a shot of Maker’s with one rock to complement mine.

Off the top of my head, perhaps the best sandwich I ever ate was at a deli in the back of a small indendent market. A place I haven’t been in decades, and may not even exist anymore. It was a smoked turkey, with smoked cheese of some kind, and lettuce, tomato, and onion, on a roll. It was pretty big, and the price was nice. And not skimpy on the meat and cheese at all. Those kinds of places exist less and less these days. It’s hard for an independent market to survive these days.

Rays are going to continue to start relievers. This is so stupid unless they would do the same thing in the post season (should they ever get there). Can you imagine doing that in post season games? And when the 8th inning comes, who’s the guy?

    • zumiee said, on May 24, 2018 at 6:19 pm

The theory is it saves the regular starting pitcher one trip through the top of the opponent’s batting order, and (in theory) helps the regular starter get off to a good start.
There’s not much data yet to back any of this up, though.

      • Flavor said, on May 24, 2018 at 7:13 pm

  42. snarkk said, on May 24, 2018 at 6:51 pm

Looney or Steph guarding Harden = no bueno…

  43. snarkk said, on May 24, 2018 at 7:01 pm

Dang this is an ugly basketball game. Rockets style of dribbling for 18 seconds then making a move is really gross…

    • Flavor said, on May 24, 2018 at 7:14 pm

Dubs have absolutely no flow to their O

  44. unca_chuck said, on May 24, 2018 at 7:17 pm

Dubs are playing the way Houston loses. They are soooooo lucky to be tied and Paul/Harden are coming up small. They NEED to get Thompson involved.

  45. unca_chuck said, on May 24, 2018 at 7:18 pm

If someone should be getting in people’s faces, it’s Klay.

What are the best uses for ciabatta bread?

    • zumiee said, on May 24, 2018 at 7:37 pm

I’d go ham and Swiss cheese sandwich.

      • sandog said, on May 24, 2018 at 7:50 pm

A BLT on a ciabatta doesn’t suck at all and I like ’em as hamburger buns too.

  47. Flavor said, on May 24, 2018 at 7:34 pm

that shimmy in Steph’s face was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. Well played Chris Paul

    • djloo27 said, on May 24, 2018 at 7:37 pm

Curry’s become very easy to dislike…

      • Lurker John said, on May 24, 2018 at 7:57 pm

And that’s unfortunate, because he’s nice guy at heart, imo. He’s taking on the persona of a diva anymore.

  48. zumiee said, on May 24, 2018 at 7:34 pm

The NBA really allows guys driving to the basket to shove off with their off hand. Harden especially does it a lot.

    • Lurker John said, on May 24, 2018 at 7:58 pm

      Agree.

  49. zumiee said, on May 24, 2018 at 7:40 pm

As John Madden sometimes said: I can’t tell if this is good defense or bad offense.

  50. Flavor said, on May 24, 2018 at 7:58 pm

Steph laughing at this shows what a cool dude he is.

  51. unca_chuck said, on May 24, 2018 at 8:02 pm

You are way off DJ. Paul is a cheap shotting punk. Curry plays with class. He may laugh and bave fun but he doesn’t dive on people’s knees and take cheap shots.

    • djloo27 said, on May 24, 2018 at 8:17 pm

I wasn’t comparing them, Chuck, but you watch them regularly – I hardly watch the NBA anymore, so I believe you…

      • sandog said, on May 24, 2018 at 8:21 pm

The last time i watched Curry play, he fired his saliva-drenched mouthpiece into the crowd.
Seemed like a prick move to me.

      • djloo27 said, on May 24, 2018 at 8:26 pm

        No, it’s classy!

  52. unca_chuck said, on May 24, 2018 at 8:05 pm

This is ridiculous. Every drive by Harden is a foul. How do you defend the refs? I guess he can’t be defended in the paint.

    • snarkk said, on May 24, 2018 at 8:16 pm

The only thing to do is overplay him and deny him the ball…

  53. djloo27 said, on May 24, 2018 at 8:14 pm

Like the chick in the short shorts…

  56. snarkk said, on May 24, 2018 at 8:25 pm

Watch out for refs here making a move…

  57. xoot said, on May 24, 2018 at 8:29 pm

my god the sloppiness. who are these guys?

  58. unca_chuck said, on May 24, 2018 at 8:29 pm

The reffing is awful. There was no pass on the rebound apparently. Fuck. Draymond with the derp.

  59. blade3colorado said, on May 24, 2018 at 8:30 pm

    Dribble much Green?

  60. unca_chuck said, on May 24, 2018 at 8:30 pm

Ballgame. Unreal. Oh well. We will win game 6. Stupid.

    • Flavor said, on May 24, 2018 at 8:31 pm

crazy. Can’t win em all. This feels over.

  61. snarkk said, on May 24, 2018 at 8:32 pm

Dubs are drubs at crunch time. They should have won this game, they played good D, Houston did not shoot well…

  62. gianthead said, on May 24, 2018 at 8:33 pm

For back to back playoff games I say WHAT THE FUCK!!!

  63. Flavor said, on May 24, 2018 at 8:34 pm

    lol. Shit.

  64. Flavor said, on May 24, 2018 at 8:38 pm

Why did Steph pass Draymond the ball. He clearly wasn’t ready for it, there’s no way they called that out of the time out (with Draymond immediately kicking it back to Steph. Stupid pass with 3 seconds left. Seriously, why give Draymond the ball with 3 seconds left???????

    • gianthead said, on May 24, 2018 at 8:52 pm

I say why the fuck did they not wait to take a final shot with a couple seconds left instead of Curry taking a bank shot with 2 people in his face. If they score Houston is down just one with 10 seconds left. I have no doubt they score…and Quinn Cook 0-3 for 3 huge shots in critical moments…

      • Flavor said, on May 24, 2018 at 8:55 pm

cook nervously catching that ball…man, you knew that shot wasn’t going in. He was TOO wide open

      • gianthead said, on May 24, 2018 at 9:07 pm

Draymond could have come to a jump stop and pulled up for a shot instead of the kick to Cook. Really really crap basketball…

  65. snarkk said, on May 24, 2018 at 8:55 pm

But, hey, Mac is called up to Chicago !
    ‘Bout time.
Leave him in all weekend, I want to see 12 ABs, swing for those Cubbie fences…

  66. Macdog said, on May 24, 2018 at 8:55 pm

This isn’t over yet. I’ll be shocked if the Warriors don’t stomp on the Rockets in Game 6.

    • gianthead said, on May 24, 2018 at 9:09 pm

Guarantee that Rockets wont show up for game 6…all down to game 7. Cp3 wont likely play game 6 as well…

  67. mrsprtdude said, on May 24, 2018 at 9:08 pm

Our stars are NOT clutch. Dubs are a great team, but can anyone remember the last time they won a close game? I mean someone hit a shot at the buzzer or won when we were down with less than a minute to go? We win blow outs but I’ve been racking my brain, at least in the playoffs, it never happens..

  68. mrsprtdude said, on May 24, 2018 at 9:10 pm

@ Craig..exactly what I was thinking. Per my above comment..No way does Paul, Harden, James, etc pass that ball with so little time left. EVER

  69. zumiee said, on May 24, 2018 at 9:24 pm

I’m curious about the severity of Paul’s injury. Looked like a hamstring the way he grabbed the back of his leg.

  70. snarkk said, on May 24, 2018 at 9:46 pm

Look a that last play. Curry passed to Draymond ahead, Draymond was supposed to take it towards the top of the key and then dump back to either Steph trailing for the 3 or over into the corner to Klay for the 3, but he botched it. That was the design…

  71. unca_chuck said, on May 24, 2018 at 10:25 pm

Calling the Warriors unclutch is pretty funny. They’ve won plenty of tight games. The pisser was on the play that Cook took the shot it was a 5 on 4 with Paul hurt. They should have worked it down low, or done more that have Cook try to hit a 3. They just played a shitty game they should have lost by 20. Klay should get more touches. He can get you 20 points in a quarter. The problem is when KD gets the ball there’s no way for Klay to get a pas his way. The Dubs played Houston’s losing strategy in game 1. Too much iso. KD was 8-22, Klay was 8-14.

Houston isn’t this good defensively but we are making them look great. They REALLY miss Iggy’s defense. And the turnovers. The pass to Harden was spectacularly idiotic. It’s like we are tired and slow. We got outworked in the 4th again. And Livingston might as well pack his bag. He’s done little lately. We are getting nothing from the bench.

I’m sure we’ll win game 6. I’m just curious to see how the refs call it. Today was yet again every Harden drive was a foul and no penetration by Curry or KD was called.

  72. unca_chuck said, on May 24, 2018 at 10:31 pm

fucking Harden was 5-21 . . .and we lost.

  73. unca_chuck said, on May 24, 2018 at 10:32 pm

Are you serious, dude? Harden has disappeared in more big games than anyone in the league.
